Following a brief survey of the requirements for quantum computational hardware, an overview of the ion trap quantum computation project at Los Alamos is presented. The physical limitations to quantum computation with trapped ions are analyzed and an assessment of the computational potential of the technology is made.

By means of the Ising terms generated by Coulomb interaction between ions and the magnetic field gradient, we carry out teleportation with insurance with trapped ions. We show the feasibility and the favorable feature of our scheme by comparing with the recently achieved teleportation experiments with trapped ions.

We observe quantum phase transitions of polaritonic excitations in two ions by directly evaluating their variances per ion site. Our work establishes an essential technological method for large-scale quantum simulations of polaritonic systems.
There has been much interest in developing methods for transferring quantum information. We discuss a way to transfer quantum information between two trapped ions through a wire. The motion of a trapped ion induces oscillating charges in the trap electrodes. By sending this current to the electrodes of a nearby second trap, the motions of ions in the two traps are coupled. We investigate the electrostatics of a set-up where two separately trapped ions are coupled through an electrically floating wire. We also discuss experimental issues, including possible sources of decoherence.
Coherent operations constitutive for the implementation of single and multi-qubit quantum gates with trapped ions are demonstrated that are robust against variations in experimental parameters and intrinsically indeterministic system parameters. Contrary to most recent realizations of qubit manipulation based on a small number of trapped and cooled ions, we study the case of traps containing a macroscopic number of ions. We analyze nonlinear coupling between individual vibrational quanta for trapped ions. The nonlinear Coulomb interaction causes a Kerr-type Hamiltonian, for which we derive an analytical expression for the coupling constant. In contrast to a previously published formula [1], our result is in close agreement with experimental data.
We describe a possible architecture to implement a universal bosonic simulator (UBS) using trapped ions. Single ions are confined in individual traps, and their motional states represent the bosonic modes. Single-mode linear operators, nonlinear phase-shifts, and linear beam splitters can be realized by precisely controlling the trapping potentials. All the processes in a bosonic simulation, except the initialization and the readout, can be conducted beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime. We study the physical implementation of an optimal tomographic reconstruction scheme for the case of determining the state of a multi-qubit system, where trapped ions are used for defining qubits. The protocol is based on the use of mutually unbiased measurements and on the physical information described in H. Häffner \emph{et. al} [Nature \textbf{438}, 643-646 (2005)]. We explore and develop the mathematics of the two multi-level ions. In particular, we describe some new features of quantum entanglement in two three-level trapped ions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic potential, allowing the instantaneous position of the center-of-mass motion of the ions to be explicitly time-dependent. We consider interactions that generate a universal set of quantum gates on logical qubits encoded in a collective-dephasing-free subspace, and discuss their implementations with trapped ions. This allows for the removal of the by-far largest source of decoherence in current trapped-ion experiments, collective dephasing. In addition, an explicit parametrization of all two-body Hamiltonians able to generate such gates without the system's state ever exiting the protected subspace is provided.

We demonstrate millikelvin thermometry of laser cooled trapped ions with high-resolution imaging. This equilibrium approach is independent of the cooling dynamics and has lower systematic error than Doppler thermometry, with \pm5 mK accuracy and \pm1 mK precision. We used it to observe highly anisotropic dynamics of a single ion, finding temperatures of < 60 mK and > 15 K simultaneously along different directions. This thermometry technique can offer new insights into quantum systems sympathetically cooled by ions, including atoms, molecules, nanomechanical oscillators, and electric circuits.
We observe quantum interference of photons emitted by two continuously laser-excited single ions, independently trapped in distinct vacuum vessels. High contrast two-photon interference is observed in two experiments with different ion species, calcium and barium. Our experimental findings are quantitatively reproduced by Bloch equation calculations. We review the recent experimental advancements towards a quantum computer with trapped ions. In particular, various implementations of qubits, quantum gates and some key experiments are discussed. Furthermore, we review some implementations of quantum algorithms such as a deterministic teleportation of quantum information and an error correction scheme.
We present an implementation of quantum logic gates via internal state dependent displacements of ions in a linear Paul trap caused by optical dipole forces. Based on a general quantum analysis of the system dynamics we consider specific implementations with alkaline earth ions. For experimentally realistic parameters gate infidelities as low as $10^{-4}$ can be obtained.
We present a selective vibronic interaction for manipulating motional states in two trapped ions, acting resonantly on a previously chosen vibronic subspace and dispersively on all others. We propose a method for generating a spin-squeezed state that is a symmetric Dicke state, with trapped ions using only global access. The eigenstates of the ions under a strong dressing field become symmetric Dicke states and the M$ø$lmer--S$ø$rensen interaction selectively couples one of them to an initially populated auxiliary state. A $\mid D_{2n}^n>$ state, which is maximally spin squeezed, can be generated with high fidelity using only square pulses. Using an adiabatic technique, the ideal maximally spin-squeezed state is generated.
Using simple physical arguments we investigate the capabilities of a quantum computer based on cold trapped ions. From the limitations imposed on such a device by spontaneous decay, laser phase coherence, ion heating and other sources of error, we derive a bound between the number of laser interactions and the number of ions that may be used. We propose a method to create two-mode squeezed states and their superposition in the center-of-mass mode and breathing mode of two-trapped ions. In this paper, we present a dynamical decoupling (DD) technique to coherently control the dynamics of a single local phonon in trapped ions. A 2$π$ rotation at a motional sideband transition flips the sign of the relevant local phonon state, resulting in cancellation of the phonon dynamics. In this work, we implement DD using single and multiple blue-sideband pulses to control a single local phonon in two $^{40}{\rm Ca}^{+}$ ions in a linear Paul trap. Our proposed DD technique can be used to engineer coupling between local phonon modes.
Using a displacement operator formalism, I analyse the depopulation of the vibrational ground state of trapped ions. Two heating times, one characterizing short time behaviour, the other long time behaviour are found. The short time behaviour is analyzed both for single and multiple ions, and a formula for the relative heating rates of different modes is derived. The possibility of correction of heating via the quantum Zeno effect, and the exploitation of the suppression of heating of higher modes to reduce errors in quantum computation is considered.

We present a method to engineer the unitary charge conjugation operator, as given by quantum field theory, in the highly controlled context of quantum optics, thus allowing one to simulate the creation of charged particles with well-defined momenta simultaneously with their respective antiparticles. Our method relies on trapped ions driven by a laser field and interacting with a single mode of a light field in a high Q cavity.
We present a robust and fast laser cooling scheme suitable for trapped atoms and ions. Based on quantum interference, generated by a special laser configuration, it is able to rapidly cool the system such that the final phonon occupation vanishes to zeroth order in the Lamb-Dicke parameter in contrast to existing cooling schemes. Furthermore, it is robust under conditions of fluctuating laser intensity and frequency, thus making it a viable candidate for experimental applications.

A 63, 052308, (2001)], we show that Grover's algorithm may be performed exactly using the gate set given provided that small changes are made to the gate sequence.
