A Knill-Laflamme-Milburn (KLM) type quantum computation with bosonic neutral atoms or bosonic ions is suggested. Crucially, as opposite to other quantum computation schemes involving atoms (ions), no controlled interactions between atoms (ions) involving their internal levels are required. Versus photonic KLM computation this scheme has the advantage that single atom (ion) sources are more natural than single photon sources, and single atom (ion) detectors are far more efficient than single photon ones.
The Knill-Laflamme-Milburn (KLM) states have been proved to be a useful resource for quantum information processing [Nature 409, 46 (2001)]. For atomic KLM states, several schemes have been put forward based on the time-dependent unitary dynamics, but the dissipative generation of these states has not been reported. This work discusses the possibility for creating different forms of bipartite KLM states in neutral atom system, where the spontaneous emission of excited Rydberg states, combined with the Rydberg antiblockade mechanism, is actively exploited to engineer a steady KLM state from an …
It is shown how the quantumness of atom-atom correlations in a trapped bosonic gas can be made observable. Application of continuous feedback control of the center of mass of the atomic cloud is shown to generate oscillations of the spatial extension of the cloud, whose amplitude can be directly used as a characterization of atom-atom correlations. Feedback parameters can be chosen such that the violation of a Schwarz inequality for atom-atom correlations can be tested at noise levels much higher than the standard quantum limit.
We analyse an implementation of a quantum computer using bosonic atoms in an optical lattice. We show that, even though the number of atoms per site and the tunneling rate between neighbouring sites is unknown, one may perform a universal set of gates by means of adiabatic passage.
Strongly interacting bosonic particles in a tight-binding periodic potential superimposed by a weak parabolic trap is a paradigm for many cold atom experiments. Here, after revisiting the single particle problem, we study interaction-bound dimers of bosonic atoms in the combined lattice and parabolic potential. We consider both repulsively- and attractively-bound dimers and find pronounced differences in their behaviour. We identify conditions under which attractive and repulsive dimers exhibit analogous dynamics. Our studies reveal that coherent transport and periodic oscillations of appropri…
We report on magneto-optical trapping of fermionic 53Cr atoms. A Zeeman-slowed atomic beam provides loading rates up to 3 10^6 /s. We present systematic characterization of the magneto-optical trap (MOT). We obtain up to 5 10^5 atoms in the steady state MOT. The atoms radiatively decay from the excited P state into metastable D states, and, due to the large dipolar magnetic moment of chromium atoms in these states, they can remain magnetically trapped in the quadrupole field gradient of the MOT. We study the accumulation of metastable 53Cr atoms into this magnetic trap. We also report on the f…
We study relations between bosonic quadrature squeezing and atomic spin squeezing, and find that the latter reduces to the former in the limit of a large number of atoms for even and odd states. We demonstrate this reduction by treating even and odd spin coherent states, for which analytical solutions are readily obtained, and prove that even spin coherent states always exhibit spin squeezing, whereas odd spin coherent states do not, analogous to the squeezing characteristic of even and odd bosonic coherent states. Finally, we examine the squeezing transfer between photons and atoms via the Di…
We study the quantum phase transitions between superfluid and Mott insulator states for ultracold bosons occupying two bands of an optical lattice. The two atomic states are resonantly coupled by a single cavity mode which mediates transitions between the two bosonic particle modes via absorption or emission of a cavity photon. This coupling between the bands shifts the appearance of the Mott insulator phase towards deeper optical lattice potentials and stronger on-site interaction strength, as atomic coherence can build up via photon assisted tunneling in both bands. Varying the intra and int…
A quantum theory of feedback of bosonic many-atom systems is formulated. The feedback-induced many-atom correlations are treated by use of a parameterized correlation function, for which closed equations of motion are derived. Therefrom the dynamics of any additive property of the system, i.e., properties derived from the reduced single-atom density operator, can be obtained. An example is given that indicates the correlation effects of feedback.
We analyze the developing of bipartite and multipartite entanglement through the Mott-Insulator - Superfluid quantum phase transition. Starting from a Mott insulator state, where a filling factor $ν= N/M = 1$ per lattice site is considered, we derive an exact expression for a completely connected graph configuration of bosons and show how bipartite and multipartite entanglement signals the phase transition predicted in previous works. Moreover, through the transition bipartite entanglement shows to be monogamous.
The thermal entanglement of two spin-1 atoms with nonlinear couplings in optical lattices is investigated in this paper. It is found that the nonlinear couplings favor the thermal entanglement creating. The dependence of the thermal entanglement in this system on the linear coupling, the nonlinear coupling, the magnetic field and temperature is also presented. The results show that the nonlinear couplings really change the feature of the thermal entanglement in the system, increasing the nonlinear coupling constant increases the critical magnetic field and the threshold temperature.
We analyse the effects of atom-atom collisions on collective laser cooling scheme. We derive a quantum Master equation which describes the laser cooling in presence of atom-atom collisions in the weak-condensation regime. Using such equation, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of the population dynamics in one and three dimensions. We observe that the ground-state laser-induced condensation is maintained in the presence of collisions. Laser cooling causes a transition from a Bose-Einstein distribution describing collisionally induced equilibrium,to a distribution with an effective zero tempera…
We put forward a new CNOT gate scheme with atoms and ions based on quantum interrogation and a bosonic particle extension of the models of linear optics quantum computation. We show how the possibility of particle collision can provide the strong interaction that is needed for universal quantum gates. Two atom optics proposals are provided. Unlike previous schemes, these gates are at the same time nondestructive, valid for arbitrary inputs and can work with a probability as close to unity as desired in the lossless case. Data is encoded into position modes and the gates only require basic atom…
It is shown that a similar functional form $S=a+b\ln N$ holds approximately for the information entropy S as function of the number of particles N for atoms, nuclei and atomic clusters (fermionic systems) and correlated boson-atoms in a trap (bosonic systems). It is also seen that rigorous inequalities previously found to hold between S and the kinetic energy T for fermionic systems, hold for bosonic systems as well. It is found that Landsberg's order parameter $Ω$ is an increasing function of N for the above systems. It is conjectured that the above properties are universal i.e. they do not d…
The coherent evolution of two atomic qubits mediated by a set of bosonic field modes is investigated. By assuming a specific encoding of the quantum states in the internal levels of the two atoms we show that entangling quantum gates can be realised, with high fidelity, even when a large number of mediating modes is involved. The effect of losses and imperfections on the gates' operation is also considered in detail.
We describe a scheme with analytic result that allows to generate steady-state entanglement for two atoms over a dissipative bosonic medium. The resonant coupling between the mediating bosonic mode and cavity modes produces three collective atomic decay channels. This dissipative dynamics, together with the unitary process induced by classical microwave fields, drives the two atoms to the symmetric or asymmetric entangled steady state conditional upon the choice of the phases of the microwave fields. The effects on the steady-state entanglement of off-resonance mediating bosonic modes are anal…
The quantum limits of stochastic cooling of trapped atoms are studied. The energy subtraction due to the applied feedback is shown to contain an additional noise term due to atom-number fluctuations in the feedback region. This novel effect is shown to dominate the cooling efficiency near the condensation point. Furthermore, we show first results that indicate that Bose--Einstein condensation could be reached via stochastic cooling.
The spectacular experimental results of the last few years in cavity quantum electrodynamics and trapped ions research has led to very high level laboratory performances. Such a stimulating situation essentially stems from two decisive advancements. The first is the invention of reliable protocols for the manipulation of single atoms. The second is the ability to produce desired bosonic environments on demand. These progresses have led to the possibility of controlling the form of the coupling between individual atoms and an arbitrary number of bosonic modes. As a consequence, fundamental matt…
We design a model of correlated hopping for bosonic atoms in optical lattices. Such model exhibits three kinds of phases, comprehending a Mott insulator, a charge density wave and a pair quasi-condensate. The implementation of the model relies on two-state atoms embedded in state-dependent lattices and having spin-dependent interactions. Contrary to other models of pairing, our design is not based on perturbative effects and should be observable in current experiments.
The minimum requirements for entanglement detection are discussed for a spin chain in which the spins cannot be individually accessed. The methods presented detect entangled states close to a cluster state and a many-body singlet state, and seem to be viable for experimental realization in optical lattices of two-state bosonic atoms. The entanglement criteria are based on entanglement witnesses and on the uncertainty of collective observables.
We theoretically study the dipolar motion of bosonic atoms in a very shallow, strongly confined 1D optical lattice using the parameters of the recent experiment [Fertig et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 220402 (2005)]. We find that, due to momentum uncertainty, a small, but non-negligible, atom population occupies the unstable velocity region of the corresponding classical dynamics, resulting in the observed dissipative atom transport. This population is generated even in a static vapor, due to quantum fluctuations which are enhanced by the lattice and the confinement, and is not notably affected b…
In this letter we propose a scheme for the preparation of steady entanglements in bosonic dissipative networks. We describe its implementation in a system of coupled cavities interacting with an engineered reservoir built up of three-level atoms. Emblematic bipartite ($Bell$ and $NOON$) and multipartite $W$-class states can be produced with high fidelity and purity.
We theoretically investigate the properties of a double-well bosonic Josephson junction coupled to a single trapped ion. We find that the coupling between the wells can be controlled by the internal state of the ion, which can be used for studying mesoscopic entanglement between the two systems and to measure their interaction with high precision. As a particular example we consider a single $^{87}$Rb atom and a small Bose-Einstein condensate controlled by a single $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ion. We calculate inter-well coupling rates reaching hundreds of Hz, while the state dependence amounts to tens of …
The N-dependence of the non-relativistic bosonic ground state energy is studied for quantum N-body systems with either Coulomb or Newton interactions. The Coulomb systems are "bosonic atoms," with their nucleus fixed, and the Newton systems are "bosonic stars". In either case there exists some third order polynomial in N such that the ratio of the ground state energy to the respective polynomial grows monotonically in N. Some applications of these new monotonicity results are discussed.
We propose a realistic scheme to create motional entangled states of a few bosonic atoms. It can experimentally be realized with a gas of ultra cold bosonic atoms trapped in a deep optical lattice potential. By simultaneously deforming and rotating the trapping potential on each lattice site it is feasible to adiabatically create a variety of entangled states on each lattice well. We fully address the case of N=2 and N=4 atoms per well and identify a sequence of fractional quantum Hall states: the Pfaffian state, the 1/2-Laughlin quasiparticle and the 1/2-Laughlin state. Exact knowledge of the…
The standard experimental techniques usually adopted in the study of the behaviour of ultracold atoms in optical lattices involve extracting the atom density profile from absorption images of the atomic sample after trap release. Quantum mechanically this procedure is described by a generalized measure (POVM); interference patterns found in absorption images suggest a generalized measure based on fixed-phase, coherent-like states. We show that this leads to an average atomic density which differs from the usually adopted one, obtained as the expectation value of the atom density operator in th…
We demonstrate the ability to extract a spin-entangled state of two neutral atoms via postselection based on a measurement of their spatial configuration. Typically, entangled states of neutral atoms are engineered via atom-atom interactions. In contrast, in our work we use Hong-Ou-Mandel interference to postselect a spin-singlet state after overlapping two atoms in distinct spin states on an effective beam splitter. We verify the presence of entanglement and determine a bound on the postselected fidelity of a spin-singlet state of $\left(0.62 \pm 0.03\right)$. The experiment has direct analog…
We explore the correlated quantum dynamics of a single atom, regarded as an open system, with a spatio-temporally localized coupling to a finite bosonic environment. The single atom, initially prepared in a coherent state of low energy, oscillates in a one-dimensional harmonic trap and thereby periodically penetrates an interacting ensemble of $N_A$ bosons, held in a displaced trap. We show that the inter-species energy transfer accelerates with increasing $N_A$ and becomes less complete at the same time. System-environment correlations prove to be significant except for times when the excess …
Mixtures of bosonic and fermionic atoms in optical lattices provide a promising arena to study strongly correlated systems. In experiments realizing such mixtures in the quantum degenerate regime the temperature is a key parameter. In this work, we investigate the intrinsic heating and cooling effects due to an entropy-preserving raising of the optical lattice potential. We analyze this process, identify the generic behavior valid for a wide range of parameters, and discuss it quantitatively for the recent experiments with 87Rb and 40K atoms. In the absence of a lattice, we treat the bosons in…
We analyze the heating of interacting bosonic atoms in an optical lattice due to intensity fluctuations of the lasers forming the lattice. We focus in particular on fluctuations at low frequencies below the band gap frequency, such that the dynamics is restricted to the lowest band. We derive stochastic equations of motion, and analyze the effects on different many-body states, characterizing heating processes in both strongly and weakly interacting regimes. In the limit where the noise spectrum is flat at low frequencies, we can derive an effective Master equation describing the dynamics. We …
We theoretically investigate the generation of microscopic atomic NOON states, corresponding to the coherent |N,0> + |0,N> superposition with N ~ 5 particles, via collective tunneling of interacting ultracold bosonic atoms within a symmetric double-well potential in the self-trapping regime. We show that a periodic driving of the double well with suitably tuned amplitude and frequency parameters allows one to substantially boost this tunneling process without altering its collective character. The time scale to generate the NOON superposition, which corresponds to half the tunneling time and w…
Optical lattice clocks with uncertainty and instability in the $10^{-17}$-range and below have so far been demonstrated exclusively using fermions. Here, we demonstrate a bosonic optical lattice clock with $3\times 10^{-18}$ instability and $2.0\times 10^{-17}$ accuracy, both values improving on previous work by a factor 30. This was enabled by probing the clock transition with an ultra-long interrogation time of 4 s, using the long coherence time provided by a cryogenic silicon resonator, by careful stabilization of relevant operating parameters, and by operating at low atom density. This wor…
We investigate theoretically soliton excitations and dynamics of their formation in strongly correlated systems of ultracold bosonic atoms in two and three dimensional optical lattices. We derive equations of nonlinear hydrodynamics in the regime of strong interactions and incommensurate fillings, when atoms can be treated as hard core bosons. When parameters change in one direction only we obtain Korteweg-de Vries type equation away from half-filling and modified KdV equation at half-filling. We apply this general analysis to a problem of the decay of the density step. We consider stability o…
We report on experiments exploring the non-Hermitian dynamics of pairs of two-level atoms tightly confined in an optical lattice and driven by a near-resonant laser. Although spontaneous emission is negligible for the long-lived excited state, two-body dissipation arises from strong inelastic collisions between two atoms in the excited state. We demonstrate quasi-adiabatic control of the internal state of the pairs in the quantum Zeno regime where inelastic losses dominate. Preparing each atom pair in the longest-lived eigenstate of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the dissipative dyna…
We analyze in detail the heating of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice due to incoherent scattering of light from the lasers forming the lattice. Because atoms scattered into higher bands do not thermalize on the timescale of typical experiments, this process cannot be described by the total energy increase in the system alone (which is determined by single-particle effects). The heating instead involves an important interplay between the atomic physics of the heating process and the many-body physics of the state. We characterize the effects on many-body states for various system parameters,…
We demonstrate a single-site and single-atom-resolved fluorescence imaging of a bosonic Mott insulator of $^7$Li atoms in an optical lattice. The fluorescence images are obtained by implementing Raman sideband cooling on a deep two-dimensional square lattice, where we collect scattered photons with a high numerical aperture objective lens. The square lattice is created by a folded retro-reflected beam configuration that can reach 2.5~mK lattice depth from a single laser source. The lattice beam is elliptically focused to have a large area with deep potential. On average 4,000 photons are colle…

We discuss the relaxation dynamics for a bosonic tunneling junction with two modes in the central potential well. We use a master equation description for ultracold bosons tunneling in the presence of noise and incoherent coupling processes into the two central modes. Whilst we cannot quantitatively reproduce the experimental data of the setup reported in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 115}, 050601 (2015)], we find a reasonable qualitative agreement of the refilling process of the initially depleted central site. Our results may pave the way for the control of bosonic tunneling junctions by the simult…
In a recent work, Murmann {\it et. al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf114}, 080402 (2015)] have experimentally prepared and manipulated a double-well optical potential containing a pair of Fermi atoms as a possible building block of Hubbard model. Here, we carry out a detailed theoretical study on the properties of both fermionic and bosonic two-site Hubbard models with a pair of interacting atoms in a trap with a double-well structure along z-axis and a 2D harmonic confinement along the transverse directions. We consider fermions as of two-component type and bosons as of spinless as well as of two sp…
We present a scheme to implement a Fermi-Hubbard-like model in ultracold atoms in optical lattices and analyze the topological features of its ground state. In particular, we show that the ground state for appropriate parameters has a large overlap with a lattice version of the bosonic Laughlin state at filling factor one half. The scheme utilizes laser assisted and normal tunnelling in a checkerboard optical lattice. The requirements on temperature, interactions, and hopping strengths are similar to those needed to observe the Néel antiferromagnetic ordering in the standard Fermi-Hubbard mode…
We consider a simple quantum model of atom-molecule conversion where bosonic atoms can combine into diatomic molecules and vice versa. The many-particle system can be expressed in terms of the generators a deformed $SU(2)$ algebra, and the mean-field dynamics takes place on a deformed version of the Bloch sphere, a teardrop shaped surface with a cusp singularity. We analyse the mean-field and many-particle correspondence, which shows typical features of quantum-classical correspondence. We demonstrate that semiclassical methods can be employed to recover full many-particle features from the me…
We discuss the theory of mixtures of Bosonic and Fermionic atoms in periodic potentials at zero temperature. We derive a general Bose--Fermi Hubbard Hamiltonian in a one--dimensional optical lattice with a superimposed harmonic trapping potential. We study the conditions for linear stability of the mixture and derive a mean field criterion for the onset of a Bosonic superfluid transition. We investigate the ground state properties of the mixture in the Gutzwiller formulation of mean field theory, and present numerical studies of finite systems. The Bosonic and Fermionic density distributions a…
We study the effect of external trapping potentials on the phase diagram of bosonic atoms in optical lattices. We introduce a generalized Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian that includes the structure of the energy levels of the trapping potential, and show that these levels are in general populated both at finite and zero temperature. We characterize the properties of the superfluid transition for this situation and compare them with those of the standard Bose-Hubbard description. We briefly discuss similar behaviors for fermionic systems.
In dissipative quantum systems, strong symmetries can lead to the existence of conservation laws and multiple steady states. In this work we investigate a strong symmetry for bosonic atoms coupled to an optical cavity, an experimentally relevant system, generalizing the adiabatic elimination techniques and using numerically exact matrix product state methods. We show that for ideal bosons coupled to the cavity multiple steady states exist and in each symmetry sector a dissipative phase transition occurs at a different critical point. This implies that phases of very different nature can coexis…
The non-relativistic bosonic ground state is studied for quantum N-body systems with Coulomb interactions, modeling atoms or ions made of N "bosonic point electrons" bound to an atomic point nucleus of Z "electron" charges, treated in Born--Oppenheimer approximation. It is shown that the (negative) ground state energy E(Z,N) yields the monotonically growing function (E(l N,N) over N cubed). By adapting an argument of Hogreve, it is shown that its limit as N to infinity for l > l* is governed by Hartree theory, with the rescaled bosonic ground state wave function factoring into an infinite prod…
More than 30 years ago, Thouless introduced the concept of a topological charge pump that would enable the robust transport of charge through an adiabatic cyclic evolution of the underlying Hamiltonian. In contrast to classical transport, the transported charge was shown to be quantized and purely determined by the topology of the pump cycle, making it robust to perturbations. On a fundamental level, the quantized charge transport can be connected to a topological invariant, the Chern number, first introduced in the context of the integer quantum Hall effect. A Thouless quantum pump may theref…
We propose to simulate bosonic pair creation using large arrays of long-lived dipoles with multilevel internal structure coupled to an undriven optical cavity. Entanglement between the atoms, generated by the exchange of virtual photons through a common cavity mode, grows exponentially fast and is described by two-mode squeezing of effective bosonic quadratures. The mapping between an effective bosonic model and the natural spin description of the dipoles allows us to realize the analog of optical homodyne measurements via straightforward global rotations and population measurements of the ele…
We study ground states and elementary excitations of a system of bosonic atoms and diatomic Feshbach molecules trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice using exact diagonalization and variational Monte Carlo methods. We primarily study the case of an average filling of one boson per site. In agreement with bosonization theory, we show that the ground state of the system in the thermodynamic limit corresponds to the Pfaffian-like state when the system is tuned towards the superfluid-to-Mott insulator quantum phase transition. Our study clarifies the possibility of the creation of exotic Pfa…

We study zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in harmonically trapped one-dimensional interacting Bose gases, using the self-consistent multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method. We define $phase$ $fluctuations$ from the full single-particle density matrix by the spatial decay exponent of off-diagonal long-range order. In a regime of mesoscopic particle numbers and moderate contact couplings, we derive the spatial dependence of the amplitude of phase fluctuations, determined from the {\em self-consistently} derived shape of the field operator orbitals and Fock space orbital occupatio…
We analyze the ground-state properties of an artificial atom made out of repulsive bosons attracted to a center for the case that all the interactions are short-ranged. Such bosonic atoms could be created by optically trapping ultracold particles of alkali vapors; we present the theory describing how their properties depend on experimentally adjustable strength of ``nuclear'' attraction and interparticle repulsion. The binding ability of the short-range potential increases with space dimensionality - only a limited number of particles can be bound in one dimension, while in two and three dimen…
Using the micro-canonical picture of transport -- a framework ideally suited to describe the dynamics of closed quantum systems such as ultra-cold atom experiments -- we show that the exact dynamics of non-interacting fermions and bosons exhibit very different transport properties when the system is set out of equilibrium by removing the particles from half of the lattice. We find that fermions rapidly develop a finite quasi steady-state current reminiscent of electronic transport in nanoscale systems. This result is robust -- it occurs with or without a harmonic confining potential and at zer…
The presence of symmetries in a closed many-body quantum system results in integrability. For such integrable systems, complete thermalization does not occur. As a result, the system remains non-ergodic. On the other hand, a set of non-interacting atoms connected to a regular bosonic bath thermalizes. Here, we show that such atoms in a spatially-correlated thermal bath can show both the behavior depending on the temperature. At zero temperature, the bath has a large correlation length, and hence it acts as a common environment. In this condition, a set of weak symmetries exist, which prevent t…
We simulate the experimental possibility of observing the antiferromagnetic (AF) order in the bosonic mixtures of rubidium ($^{87}$Rb) and potassium ($^{41}$K) in a two-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of harmonic confinement. By tuning the interspecies interactions and the lattice heights we have found the ground states, within the mean-field approximation, that interpolate from the phase separation to the AF order. For a moderate lattice height the coexistence of the Mott and AF phase is possible for the Rb atoms while the K atoms remain in the AF-superfluid phase. This observatio…
We use bosonization approach to investigate quantum phases in mixtures of bosonic and fermionic atoms confined in one dimensional optical lattices. The phase diagrams can be well understood in terms of polarons, which correspond to atoms that are "dressed" by screening clouds of the other atom species. For a mixture of single species of fermionic and bosonic atoms we find a charge density wave phase, a phase with fermion pairing, and a regime of phase separation. For a mixture of two species of fermionic atoms and one species of bosonic atoms we obtain spin and charge density wave phases, a Wi…
