Strongly interacting bosonic particles in a tight-binding periodic potential superimposed by a weak parabolic trap is a paradigm for many cold atom experiments. Here, after revisiting the single particle problem, we study interaction-bound dimers of bosonic atoms in the combined lattice and parabolic potential. We consider both repulsively- and attractively-bound dimers and find pronounced differences in their behaviour. We identify conditions under which attractive and repulsive dimers exhibit analogous dynamics. Our studies reveal that coherent transport and periodic oscillations of appropriately prepared one- and two-atom wavepackets can be achieved, which may facilitate information transfer in optical lattice based quantum computation schemes.
We present a general formulation of the ground state binding energy of a shallow hydrogenic impurity in spherical quantum dot with parabolic confinement, considering the effects of polarization and self energy. The variational approach within the effective mass approximation is employed here. The binding energy of an on-center impurity is computed for a $\mathrm{GaAs}$/ $\mathrm{{Al}_{x}{Ga}_{1-x}As}$ quantum dot as a function of the dot size with the dot barrier as parameter. The influence of polarization and self energy are also treated separately. Results indicate that the binding energy in…
Exceptional points, the spectral degeneracy points in the complex parameter space, are fundamental to non-Hermitian quantum systems. The dynamics of non-Hermitian systems in the presence of exceptional points differ significantly from those of Hermitian ones. Here we investigate non-adiabatic transitions in non-Hermitian $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric systems, in which the exceptional points are driven through at finite speed which are quadratic or cubic functions of time. We identity different transmission dynamics separated by exceptional points, and derive analytical approximate formula…

We analyze the current of Bose particles across the tight-binding chain connected at both ends to the particles reservoirs. Unlike the standard open Bose-Hubbard model, where the presence of reservoirs is taken into account by the Lindbladians acting on the first and the last sites of the chain, we use the semi-microscopic models for the reservoirs. This allows us to address the case of arbitrary reservoir temperature. In particular, we discuss the phenomenon of the resonant transmission for nearly condensed bosons, where the current across the chain is significantly enhanced for certain value…
The description of unitary few-boson systems is conceptually simple: only one parameter -- the three-body binding energy -- is required to predict the binding energies of clusters with an arbitrary number of bosons. Whether this correlation between the three- and many-boson systems still holds for two species of bosons for which only the inter-species interaction is resonant depends on how many particles of each species are in the system. For few-body clusters with species $A$ and $B$ and a resonant $AB$ interaction, it is known that the emergent $AAB$ and $ABB$ three-body scales are correlate…
We evaluate the binding energies of systems of bosonic and fermionic particles on the basis of the quantum Szilard engine, which confers an energetic value to information and entropy changes. We extend treatment of the quantum information thermodynamic operation of the Szilard engine to its non-trivial role in Bose-Einstein condensation of the light mass polariton quasiparticle, and binding of large multi-excitonic complexes, and note the same order of magnitudes of exchange and extraction energies in these disparate systems. We examine the gradual decline of a defined information capacitive e…

Using new experimental measurements of photoassociation resonances near the $^1\mathrm{S}_0 \rightarrow \phantom{ }^3\mathrm{P}_1$ intercombination transition in $^{84}$Sr and $^{86}$Sr, we present an updated study into the mass-scaling behavior of bosonic strontium dimers. A previous mass-scaling model [Borkowski et al., Phys. Rev. A 90, 032713 (2014)] was able to incorporate a large number of photoassociation resonances for $^{88}$Sr, but at the time only a handful of resonances close to the dissociation limit were known for $^{84}$Sr and $^{86}$Sr. In this work, we perform a more thorough m…
We analyze the ground-state properties of an artificial atom made out of repulsive bosons attracted to a center for the case that all the interactions are short-ranged. Such bosonic atoms could be created by optically trapping ultracold particles of alkali vapors; we present the theory describing how their properties depend on experimentally adjustable strength of ``nuclear'' attraction and interparticle repulsion. The binding ability of the short-range potential increases with space dimensionality - only a limited number of particles can be bound in one dimension, while in two and three dimen…
Quantum master equations form an important tool in the description of transport problems in open quantum systems. However, they suffer from the difficulty that the shape of the Lindblad dissipator depends sensibly on the system Hamiltonian. Consequently, most of the work done in this field has focused on phenomenological dissipators which act locally on different parts of the system. In this paper we show how to construct Lindblad dissipators for quantum many-body systems starting from a microscopic theory of the system-bath interaction. We consider specifically a one-dimensional bosonic tight…
We propose two kinds of distinguishing parameter regimes to induce topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) phase in a one dimensional (1D) multi-resonator cavity optomechanical system via modulating the frequencies of both cavity fields and resonators. The introduction of the frequency modulations allows us to eliminate the Stokes heating process for the mapping of the tight-binding Hamiltonian without usual rotating wave approximation, which is totally different from the traditional mapping of the topological tight-binding model. We find that the tight-binding Hamiltonian can be mapped into a …
Properties of bosonic atoms in small systems with a periodic quasi one-dimensional circular toroidal lattice potential subjected to rotation are examined by performing exact diagonalization in a truncated many body space. The expansion of the many-body Hamiltonian is considered in terms of the first band Bloch functions, and no assumption regarding restriction to nearest-neighbor hopping (tight-binding approximation) is involved. A finite size version of the zero temperature phase diagrams of Fisher et al. \cite{Fisher} is obtained and the results, in remarkable quantitative correspondence wit…
We consider energetics and structural properties of a many particle system in one dimension with pairwise contact interactions confined in a parabolic external potential. To render the problem analytically solvable, we use the harmonic approximation scheme at the level of the Hamiltonian. We investigate the scaling with particle number of the ground state energies for systems consisting of identical bosons or fermions. We then proceed to focus on bosonic systems and make a detailed comparison to known exact results in the absence of the parabolic external trap for three-body systems. We also c…
The spectral flow of three-body (trimer) states consisting of two heavy (impurity) particles sitting in a condensate of light bosons is considered. Assuming that the condensate is weakly interaction and that an impurity and a boson have a zero-range two-body interaction, we use the Born-Oppenheimer approximation to determine the effective three-body potential. We solve the resulting Schrödinger equation numerically and determine the trimer binding energies as a function of the coherence length of the light bosonic condensate particles. The binding energy is found to be suppressed by the presen…
Lattice generalizations of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems, called fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), have been extensively investigated in strongly correlated systems. Despite many efforts, previous studies have not revealed all of the guiding principles for the FCI search. In this paper, we investigate a relationship between the topological band structure in the two-particle problem and the FCI ground states in the many-body problem. We first formulate the two-particle problem of a bosonic on-site interaction projected onto the lowest band of a given tight-binding Hamiltonian. We intr…
We consider a pair of bosonic particles in a one-dimensional tight-binding periodic potential described by the Hubbard model with attractive or repulsive on-site interaction. We derive explicit analytic expressions for the two-particle states, which can be classified as (i) scattering states of asymptotically free particles and (ii) interaction-bound dimer states. Our results provide a very transparent framework to understand the properties of interacting pairs of particles in a lattice.
We report a comprehensive study of the ground-state properties of one and two bosonic impurities immersed in small one-dimensional optical lattices loaded with a few interacting bosons. We model the system with a two-component Bose-Hubbard model and solve the problem numerically by means of the exact diagonalization (ED) method. We report binding energies of one and two impurities across the superfluid (SF) to Mott-insulator (MI) transition and confirm the formation of two-body bound states of impurities induced by repulsive interactions. In particular, we found that an insulator bath induces …
We introduce an effective 2-dimer tight-binding model for the family of Shastry-Sutherland models with geometrically tunable triplon excitations. The Rashba pseudospin-orbit coupling induced by the tilted external magnetic field leads to elementary excitations having nontrivial topological properties with π-Berry flux. The interplay between the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field thus allows us to effectively engineer the band structure in this bosonic system. In particular, the in-plane magnetic field gives rise to Berry curvature hotspot near the bottom of the triplon band, and at the s…
In this paper, with the help of Hermitian/non-Hermitian dynamic strings, the theory of non-Hermitian topological order is developed based on a non-Hermitian Wen-plaquette model. The effective models for bosonic topological excitations (e-particle and m-particle) are Hermitian tight-binding lattice model; the effective model for fermionic topological excitation (f-particle) becomes a non-Hermitian tight-binding lattice model. In addition, the effective pseudo-spin model for topologically degenerate ground states is derived by calculating the expectation values of Hermitian/non-Hermitian topolog…
A theoretical approach was developed for an exact numerical description of a pair of ultracold atoms interacting via a central potential that are trapped in a three-dimensional optical lattice. The coupling of center-of-mass and relative-motion coordinates is explicitly considered using a configuration-interaction (exact-diagonalization) technique. Deviations from the harmonic approximation are discussed for several heteronuclear alkali-metal atom pairs trapped in a single site of an optical lattice. The consequences are discussed for the analysis of a recent experiment [C. Ospelkaus et al, Ph…
We study the three-body problem for both fermionic and bosonic cold atom gases in a parabolic transverse trap of lengthscale $a_\perp$. For this quasi-one-dimensional (1D) problem, there is a two-body bound state (dimer) for any sign of the 3D scattering length $a$, and a confinement-induced scattering resonance. The fermionic three-body problem is universal and characterized by two atom-dimer scattering lengths, $a_{ad}$ and $b_{ad}$. In the tightly bound `dimer limit', $a_\perp/a\to\infty$, we find $b_{ad}=0$, and $a_{ad}$ is linked to the 3D atom-dimer scattering length. In the weakly bound…
We examine the properties of a one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas with attractive intrinsic (Hubbard) interactions in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field by numerically computing the pair binding energy, excitation gap, and susceptibility to local perturbations using the density matrix renormalization group. Such a system can, in principle, be realized in a system of ultracold atoms confined in a 1D optical lattice. We note that, in the presence of spatial interfaces introduced by a smooth parabolic potential, the pair binding and excitation energy of the system decays exponential…
