The canonical quantization of flux is performed. It is shown that according to the canonical flux quantization there must be a new uncertainty relation: $e ΔA_m . Δx_m \geq \hbar$ where $A_m$ and $Δx_m \geq l_B$ are the electromagnetic gauge potential, the position uncertainty and the magnetic length, respectively. Other arguments in favour of this uncertainty relation are also discussed.
In this letter we derive an expression for the force acting on a small (still macroscopic) particle in the field of the quantized electromagnetic radiation in any arbitrary quantum state. This result unifies in one simple formula all known expressions for the forces (i.e. van der Waals or frictional) acting on a small particle.
The thermodynamical properties of a quantized electromagnetic field inside a box with perfectly conducting walls are studied using a regularization scheme that permits to obtain finite expressions for the thermodynamic potentials. The source of ultraviolet divergences is directly isolated in the expression for the density of modes, and the logarithmic infrared divergences are regularized imposing the uniqueness of vacuum and, consequently, the vanishing of the entropy in the limit of zero temperature. We thus obtain corrections to the Casimir energy and pressures, and to the specific heat that…
By using the Green-function concept of quantization of the electromagnetic field in dispersing and absorbing media, the quantized field in the presence of a dispersing and absorbing dielectric multilayer plate is studied. Three-dimensional input-output relations are derived for both amplitude operators in the ${\bf k}$-space and the field operators in the coordinate space. The conditions are discussed, under which the input-output relations can be expressed in terms of bosonic operators. The theory applies to both (effectively) free fields and fields, created by active atomic sources inside an…
The interaction of a quantized field with three-level atoms in $Λ$ configuration inside a two-mode cavity is analyzed in the small noise approximation. The atoms are in a two-photon detuning with respect to the carriers of the field. We calculate the stationary quadrature noise spectrum of the field outside the cavity in the case where the input probe field is a squeezed state and the input pump field is a coherent state. The mean value of the field is unaltered in all the analysis: the atoms shows electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The effect of the atoms' base level decoherence …
We study the scattering of the quantized electromagnetic field from a linear, dispersive dielectric using the scattering formalism for quantum fields. The medium is modeled as a collection of harmonic oscillators with a number of distinct resonance frequencies. This model corresponds to the Sellmeir expansion, which is widely used to describe experimental data for real dispersive media. The integral equation for the interpolating field in terms of the in field is solved and the solution used to find the out field. The relation between the in and out creation and annihilation operators is found…
The quantum behaviour of the electromagnetic field in mesoscopic elements is intimately linked to the quantization of the charge. In order to probe nonclassical aspects of the field in those elements, it is essential that thermal noise be reduced to the quantum level, i.e. to scales where kT < hν. This is easily achieved in dilution refrigerators for frequencies of a few GHz, i.e. in the microwave domain. Several recent experiments have highlighted the link between discrete charge transport and discrete photon emission in simple mesoscopic elements such as a tunnel junction. Photocount statist…
It is shown a complex function $Φ$ defined to be the product of a real Gaussian function and a complex Dirac delta function satisfies the Cauchy-Riemann equations. It is also shown these harmonic $Φ$-functions can be included in the solution of the classical electromagnetic field equations to generate the quantum field as a many-particle solution such that the $Φ$-functions represent the particle states. Creation and destruction operators are defined as usual to add or subtract photons from the particle states. The orbital angular momentum of the $Φ$-states is interpreted as spin since it emer…
A general theory of the interaction of the quantized electromagnetic field with atoms in the presence of dispersing and absorbing dielectric bodies of given Kramers--Kronig consistent permittivities is developed. It is based on a source-quantity representation of the electromagnetic field, in which the electromagnetic-field operators are expressed in terms of a continuous set of fundamental bosonic fields via the Green tensor of the classical problem. Introducing scalar and vector potentials, the formalism is extended in order to include in the theory the interaction of the quantized electroma…
We study quantum dynamics of many-qubit systems strongly coupled to a quantized electromagnetic cavity mode, in the presence of decoherence and dissipation for both fermions and cavity photons. The analytic solutions are derived for a broad class of open quantum systems in Lindblad approximation. They include identical qubits, an ensemble of qubits with a broad distribution of transition frequencies, and multi-level electron systems. Compact analytic solutions for time-dependent quantum state amplitudes and observables become possible with the use of the stochastic equation of evolution for th…
We consider an approach in which the usual wave function in the quadrature representation of mode j of the electromagnetic field is further quantized to produce a field operator. Since the electromagnetic field is already second quantized, this corresponds to an additional or third quantization. The third-quantization approach can be used to perform certain quantum optics calculations in the Heisenberg picture that could only be performed in the Schrodinger picture when using the conventional second-quantized theory. This approach also allows an interesting generalization of quantum optics and…
We investigate the interaction of two two-level qubits with a single mode quantum field in a cavity without rotating wave approximation and considering that qubits can be located at an arbitrary distance from each other. We demonstrate that there exists a radiation induced interaction potential between atoms. We studied the properties of the system numerically and in addition constructed a simple analytical approximation. It is shown that the observable characteristics are substantially dependent on the distance between the qubits in the strong coupling regime. This allows one to perform the q…
A random field that is empirically equivalent to the quantized electromagnetic field is constructed. A mapping between the creation and annihilation operator algebras of a random field and of the quantized electromagnetic field provides a functor between the algebras and the Hilbert spaces generated by the vacuum states over those algebras. The functor inevitably does not extend to a functorial relationship between the local algebras generated by the random field and by the quantized electromagnetic field, but the empirical content provided by the vacuum state restores an empirical equivalence…
The notion of the Trojan state of a Rydberg electron, introduced by I.Bialynicki-Birula, M.Kaliński, and J.H.Eberly (Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 1777 (1994)) is extended to the case of the electromagnetic field quantized in acavity. The shape of the electronic wave packet describing the Trojan state is practically the same as in the previously studied externally driven system. The fluctuations of the quantized electromagnetic field around its classical value exhibit strong squeezing. The emergence of Trojan states in the cylindrically symmetrical system is attributed to spontaneous symmetry braking.

We study linear and nonlinear optical properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium interacting with two quantized laser fields for adiabatic EIT case. We show that EIT medium exhibits normal dispersion. Kerr and higher order nonlinear refractive-index coefficients are also calculated in a completely analytical form. It is indicated that EIT medium exhibits giant resonantly enhanced nonlinearities. We discuss the response of the EIT medium to nonclassical light fields and find that the polarization vanishes when the probe laser is initially in a nonclassical state of no s…
We analyze Niels Bohr's proposed two-slit interference experiment with highly charged particles that argues that the consistency of elementary quantum mechanics requires that the electromagnetic field must be quantized. In the experiment a particle's path through the slits is determined by measuring the Coulomb field that it produces at large distances; under these conditions the interference pattern must be suppressed. The key is that as the particle's trajectory is bent in diffraction by the slits it must radiate and the radiation must carry away phase information. Thus the radiation field m…
We show that introducing a small uncertainty in the parameters of quantum systems can make the dynamics of these systems robust against perturbations. Concretely, for the case where a system is subject to perturbations due to an environment, we derive a lower bound on the fidelity decay, which increases with increasing uncertainty in the state of the environment. Remarkably, this robustness in fidelity can be achieved even in fragile chaotic systems. We show that non-Markovianity is necessary for attaining robustness in the fidelity.
In this work, starting from commutation relations between phase-space operators (in "first quantization") we define averaged creation and annihilation operators and show that they satisfy a simple, deformed commutation relation. By extending this relation to the quantized electromagnetic field, we determine the new vacuum state which has a non-zero component in standard occupied states. In addition we are led to non-linear de Broglie relations for photons, which appreciably depart from linearity only in the very-high-energy regime. The nonlinear Compton scattering that follows from these assum…
A Heisenberg uncertainty relation is derived for spatially-gated electric and magnetic field fluctuations. The uncertainty increases for small gating sizes which implies that in confined spaces the quantum nature of the electromagnetic field must be taken into account. Optimizing the state of light to minimize the electric at the expense of the magnetic field, and vice versa should be possible. Spatial confinements and quantum fields may alternatively be realized without gating by interaction of the field with a nanostructure. Possible applications include nonlinear spectroscopy of nanostructu…
We quantize the macroscopic electromagnetic field in a system of non-dispersive polarizable bodies moving at constant velocities possibly exceeding the Cherenkov threshold. It is shown that in general the quantized system is unstable and neither has a ground state nor supports stationary states. The quantized Hamiltonian is written in terms of quantum harmonic oscillators associated with both positive and negative frequencies, such that the oscillators associated with symmetric frequencies are coupled by an interaction term that does not preserve the quantum occupation numbers. Moreover, in th…
Covariant quantization of the electromagnetic field imposes the so-called gauge-fixing modification on the Lagrangian density. As a result of that, the total angular momentum operator receives at least one gauge-fixing-originated contribution, whose presence causes some confusion in the literature. The goal of this work is to discuss in detail why such a contribution, having no classical interpretation, is actually indispensable. For this purpose, we divide canonical and Belinfante-Rosenfeld total angular momentum operators into different components and study their commutation relations, their…
The symplectic tomograms of 2D Hermite--Gauss beams are found and expressed in terms of the Hermite polynomials squared. It is shown that measurements of optical-field intensities may be used to determine the tomograms of electromagnetic-radiation modes. Furthermore, entropic uncertainty relations associated with these tomograms are found and applied to establish the compatibility conditions of the the field profile properties with Hermite--Gauss beam description. Numerical evaluations for some Hermite--Gauss modes illustrating the corresponding entropic uncertainty relations are finally given…
The theory developed by Gruner and Welsch [Phys. Rev. A 54, 1661 (1996)] for calculating the 1D input-output relations of the quantized electromagnetic field at dispersing and absorbing dielectric (multilayer) plates is generalized to the three-dimensional case. First a general recipe for the derivation of the reflection and transmission coefficients at an arbitrary body that separates two half spaces from each other is presented. The general theory is then applied to the case of planar multilayer structures, for which the Green tensor is well-known.
In absence of currents and charges the quantized electromagnetic field can be described by wave functions which for each individual wave vector are normalized to one. The resulting formalism involves reducible representations of the Canonical Commutation Relations. The corresponding paradigm is a space-time filled with two-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillators. Mathematically, this is equivalent with two additional dimensions penetrated by the electromagnetic waves.
By modeling a dielectric medium with two independent reservoirs, i.e., electric and magnetic reservoirs, the electromagnetic field is quantized in a linear dielectric medium consistently. A Hamiltonian is proposed from which using the Heisenberg equations, not only the Maxwell equations but also the structural equations can be obtained. Using the Laplace transformation, the wave equation for the electromagnetic vector potential is solved in the case of a homogeneous dielectric medium. Some examples are considered showing the applicability of the model to both absorptive and nonabsorptive diele…
We formulate the second quantization of a charged scalar field in homogeneous, time-dependent electromagnetic fields, in which the Hamiltonian is an infinite system of decoupled, time-dependent oscillators for electric fields, but it is another infinite system of coupled, time-dependent oscillators for magnetic fields. We then employ the quantum invariant method to find various quantum states for the charged field. For time-dependent electric fields, a pair of quantum invariant operators for each oscillator with the given momentum plays the role of the time-dependent annihilation and the creat…
In electron scattering, the target form factors contribute significantly to the diffraction pattern and carry information on the target electromagnetic charge distribution. Here we show that the presence of electromagnetic radiation, as intense as currently available in Free Electron Lasers, shifts the dependence of the target form factors by a quantity that depends on the number of photons absorbed or emitted by the electron as well as on the parameters of the electromagnetic radiation. As example, we show the impact of intense ultraviolet and soft X-ray radiation on elastic electron scatteri…
On the example of stationary states of a system consisting of an atom and a quantized electromagnetic field (the Jaynes-Cummings model in free space), it is shown that the physical characteristics of the system (as the energy and the probability distribution of finding the center of mass of the atom) explicitly depend on the choice of the basis of quantization of the electromagnetic field. Therefore, the secondary quantization procedure is not independent of the choice of the quantization basis in the interaction of the field with the material medium.
We recently introduced a quantized fluctuational electrodynamics (QFED) formalism that provides a physically insightful definition of an effective position-dependent photon-number operator and the associated ladder operators. However, this far the formalism has been applicable only for the normal incidence of the electromagnetic field in planar structures. In this work, we overcome the main limitation of the one-dimensional QFED formalism by extending the model to three dimensions, allowing us to use the QFED method to study, e.g., plasmonic structures. To demonstrate the benefits of the devel…
We present a Gupta-Bleuler quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in time-dependent dielectric media. Starting from the Maxwell equations, a generalization of the Lorentz gauge condition adapted to time varying dielectrics is derived. Using this gauge, a Gupta-Bleuler approach to quantize all polarizations of the radiation field and the corresponding constraint condition are introduced. This new approach is different from the quantized electromagnetic field in vacuum in the sense that here the contributions of unphysical photons cannot be thoroughly eliminated, which further lead to…
The electromagnetic field in an anisotropic and inhomogeneous magnetodielectric is quantized by modelling the medium with two independent quantum fields. Some coupling tensors coupling the electromagnetic field with the medium are introduced. Electric and magnetic polarizations are obtained in terms of the ladder operators of the medium and the coupling tensors explicitly. Using a minimal coupling scheme for electric and magnetic interactions, the Maxwell equations and the constitutive equations of the medium are obtained. The electric and magnetic susceptibility tensors of the medium are calc…
By modeling a linear, anisotropic and inhomogeneous magnetodielectric medium with two independent set of harmonic oscillators, electromagnetic field is quantized in such a medium. The electric and magnetic polarizations of the medium are expressed as linear combinations of the ladder operators describing the magnetodielectric medium. The Maxwell and the constitutive equations of the medium are obtained as the Heisenberg equations of the total system. The electric and magnetic susceptibilities of the medium are obtained in terms of the tensors coupling the medium with the electromagnetic field.…
Starting from a Lagrangian, the electromagnetic field is quantized in the presence of a body rotating along its axis of symmetry. Response functions and fluctuation-dissipation relations are obtained. A general formula for rotational friction and power radiated by a rotating dielectric body is obtained in terms of the dyadic Green's tensor. Hamiltonian is determined and possible generalizations are discussed. As an example, the rotational friction and power radiated by a spherical dielectric in the vicinity of a semi-infinite dielectric plane is obtained and discussed in some limiting cases.
By modeling a linear polarizable and magnetizable medium (magneto-dielectric) with two quantum fields, namely E and M, electromagnetic field is quantized in such a medium consistently and systematically. A Hamiltonian is proposed from which, using the Heisenberg equations, Maxwell and constitutive equations of the medium are obtained. For a homogeneous medium, the equation of motion of the quantum vector potential, $\vec{A}$, is derived and solved analytically. Two coupling functions which describe the electromagnetic properties of the medium are introduced. Four examples are considered showin…
We show that the material dependencies of macroscopically quantized fields in linear media are not consistent with the classical electromagnetic boundary conditions. We then phenomenologically construct macroscopic quantized fields that satisfy quantum--classical correspondence with the result indicating that the canonical momentum in a linear medium is modified as a consequence of the reduced speed of light. We re-derive D'Alembert's principle and Lagrange's equations for an arbitrarily large region of space in which light signals travel slower than in the vacuum and show that the resulting m…
The interaction between an atom and the quantized electromagnetic field depends on the position of the atom. Then the atom experiences a force which is the minus gradient of this interaction. Through the Heisenberg equations of motion and the Born-Markov approximation, the mean and correlation of the force are obtained, showing that the center-of-mass motion of the atom is damped and diffused. This approach can be easily generalized to multi-level atoms, where the damping force and diffusion coefficients are just the weighted average of the contributions from all pairs of energy levels that ha…
The electromagnetic field inside a cubic cavity filled up with a linear magnetodielectric medium and in the presence of external charges is quantized by modelling the magnetodielectric medium with two independent quantum fields. Electric and magnetic polarization densities of the medium are defined in terms of the ladder operators of the medium and eigenmodes of the cavity. Maxwell and constitutive equations of the medium together with the equation of motion of the charged particles have been obtained from the Heisenberg equations using a minimal coupling scheme. Spontaneous emission of a two …
The effects of the quantized electromagnetic fields on the spectral statistics of two-level atoms are considered. We have used the Berry- Robnik distribution and Maximum Likelihood estimation technique to analyze the effect of mean photon and two level atoms numbers and also the quantum number of considered states. Results suggest the intensity of electromagnetic fields as control parameter which the spectral statistics change due to its variation in the 0-1200 region. Also, we observed the universality in the spectral statistics of considered systems when the number of two level atoms is appr…
The reduced dynamics of an atomic qubit coupled both to its own quantized center of mass motion through the spatial mode functions of the electromagnetic field, as well as the vacuum modes, is calculated in the influence functional formalism. The formalism chosen can describe the entangled non-Markovian evolution of the system with a full account of the coherent back-action of the environment on the qubit. We find a slight increase in the decoherence due to the quantized center of mass motion and give a condition on the mass and qubit resonant frequency for which the effect is important. In op…
We determine the commutation relations satisfied by the quantized electromagnetic field in the presence of macroscopic dielectrics and conductors, with arbitrary dispersive and dissipative properties. We consider in detail the case of two plane-parallel material slabs, separated by an empty gap, and we show that at all points in the empty region between the slabs, including their surfaces, the electromagnetic fields always satisfy free-field canonical equal-time commutation relations. This result is a consequence of general analyticity and fall-off properties at large frequencies satisfied by …
The electromagnetic field is canonically quantized in the presence of a linear, dispersive and dissipative medium that is in uniform motion. Specifically we calculate the change in the normal modes of the coupled matter-field system and find a Hamiltonian that contains negative energy normal modes. We interpret these modes as the origin of phenomena such as quantum friction, and find that a detector initially in its ground state and coupled to the electromagnetic field in the vicinity of, or within a uniformly moving medium has a non-zero probability of excitation at T=0K.
The stress tensor for the quantized electromagnetic field is calculated in the region between a pair of dispersive, dielectric half-spaces. This generalizes the stress tensor for the Casimir energy to the case where the boundaries have finite reflectivity. We also include the effects of finite temperature. This allows us to discuss the circumstances under which the weak energy condition and the null energy condition can be violated in the presence of finite reflectivity and finite temperature.
We present a quantum open system theory of atom interferometers evolving in the quantized electromagnetic field bounded by an ideal conductor. Our treatment reveals an unprecedented feature of matter-wave propagation, namely the appearance of a non-local double-path phase coherence. Such a non-local phase arises from the coarse-graining over the quantized electromagnetic field and internal atomic degrees of freedom, yielding a non-Hamiltonian evolution of the atomic waves moving in presence of correlated quantum dipole and field fluctuations. We develop a diagrammatic interpretation of this ph…
We present exact energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the one-dimensional hydrogen atom in the framework of the Generalized (Gravitational) Uncertainty Principle (GUP). This form of GUP is consistent with various theories of quantum gravity such as string theory, loop quantum gravity, black-hole physics, and doubly special relativity and implies a minimal length uncertainty and a maximal momentum. We show that the quantized energy spectrum exactly agrees with the semiclassical results.
