A careful reexamination of the quantization of systems with first- and second-class constraints from the point of view of coherent-state phase-space path integration reveals several significant distinctions from more conventional treatments. Most significantly, we emphasize the importance of using path-integral measures for Lagrange multipliers which ensure that the quantum system satisfies the quantum constraint conditions. Our procedures involve no delta-functionals of the classical constraints, no need for gauge fixing of first-class constraints, no need to eliminate second-class constraints, no potentially ambiguous determinants, and have the virtue of resolving differences between canonical and path-integral approaches. Several examples are considered in detail.
Coherent state theory is shown to reproduce three categories of representations of the spectrum generating algebra for an algebraic model: (i) classical realizations which are the starting point for geometric quantization; (ii) induced unitary representations corresponding to prequantization; and (iii) irreducible unitary representations obtained in geometric quantization by choice of a polarization. These representations establish an intimate relation between coherent state theory and geometric quantization in the context of induced representations.
A fully geometric procedure of quantization that utilizes a natural and necessary metric on phase space is reviewed and briefly related to the goals of the program of geometric quantization.
It is shown here and in the preceeding paper (quant-ph/0201129) that vector coherent state theory, the theory of induced representations, and geometric quantization provide alternative but equivalent quantizations of an algebraic model. The relationships are useful because some constructions are simpler and more natural from one perspective than another. More importantly, each approach suggests ways of generalizing its counterparts. In this paper, we focus on the construction of quantum models for algebraic systems with intrinsic degrees of freedom. Semi-classical partial quantizations, for wh…
We present a new method for the consistent construction of time-continuous coherent-state path integrals using the theory of half-form quantization. Through the inversion of the quantization procedure we construct a de-quantization map taking first order operators to their corresponding path integrals. We generalize our results using functional techniques, allowing for the consistent path integral study of more general operators, including higher orders and interactions.
Phase operators are constructed using a Klauder-Berezin coherent state quantization in finite Hilbert subspaces of the Hilbert space of Fourier series. The study of infinite dimensional limits of mean values of some observables phase leads towards a simpler convergence to the canonical commutation relations.
We build coherent states (CS) for unbounded motions along two different procedures. In the first one we adapt the Malkin-Manko construction for quadratic Hamiltonians to the motion of a particle in a linear potential. A generalization to arbitrary potentials is discussed. The second one extends to continuous spectrum previous constructions of action-angle coherent states in view of a consistent energy quantization.
The geometric quantization problem is considered from the point of view of the Davies and Lewis approach to quantum mechanics. The influence of the measuring device is accounted in the classical and quantum case and it is shown that the conditions of the measurement define the type of quantization (Weyl, normal, antinormal, etc.). The quantum states and quantum operators are obtained by means of the projection, defined from the system of generalized coherent states.
We present a possible construction of coherent states on the unit circle as configuration space. Our approach is based on Borel quantizations on S^1 including the Aharonov-Bohm type quantum description. The coherent states are constructed by Perelomov's method as group related coherent states generated by Weyl operators on the quantum phase space Z x S^1. Because of the duality of canonical coordinates and momenta, i.e. the angular variable and the integers, this formulation can also be interpreted as coherent states over an infinite periodic chain. For the construction we use the analogy with…
We present a new procedure which allows a coherent state (CS) quantization of any set with a measure. It is manifest through the replacement of classical observables by CS quantum observables, which acts on a Hilbert space of prescribed dimension $N$. The algebra of CS quantum observables has the finite dimension $N^2$. The application to the 2-sphere provides a family of inequivalent CS quantizations, based on the spin spherical harmonics (the CS quantization from usual spherical harmonics appears to give a trivial issue for the cartesian coordinates). We compare these CS quantizations to the…
Our previous work on quantum kinematics and coherent states over finite configuration spaces is extended: the configuration space is, as before, the cyclic group Z_n of arbitrary order n=2,3,..., but a larger group - the non-Abelian dihedral group D_n - is taken as its symmetry group. The corresponding group related coherent states are constructed and their overcompleteness proved. Our approach based on geometric symmetry can be used as a kinematic framework for matrix methods in quantum chemistry of ring molecules.
We describe quantum and classical Hamiltonian dynamics in a common Hilbert space framework, that allows the treatment of mixed quantum-classical systems. The analysis of some examples illustrates the possibility of entanglement between classical and quantum systems. We give a summary of the main tools of Berezin-Toeplitz and geometric quantization, that provide a relation between the classical and the quantum models, based essentially on the selection of a subspace of the classical Hilbert space. Coherent states provide a systematic tool for the inverse process, called dequantization, that ass…
This work presents a selective review of results concerning the mathematical interface between the classical and quantum aspects encountered in problems such as the nuclear mean-field dynamics or quantum Brownian motion. It is shown that the main difference between classical and quantum behavior arises from the coherence properties of the phase-space distributions known as "action waves" and Wigner functions. The quantum wave functions appear as elementary degrees of freedom for the phase space granularity.
The ordinary Landau problem consists of describing a charged particle in time-independent magnetic field. In the present case the problem is generalized onto time-dependent uniform electric fields with time-dependent mass and harmonic frequency [1].The spectrum of a Hamiltonian describing this system is obtained. The configuration space wave functions of the model is expressed in terms of the generalised Laguerre polynomials. To diagonalize the time-dependent Hamiltonian we employ the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants. To this end, we introduce an unitary transformation in the framework of…
The domain of application of quantization methods is traditionally restricted to smooth classical observables. We show that the coherent states or "anti-Wick" quantization enables us to construct fairly reasonable quantum versions of irregular observables living on the classical phase space, such as the angle function, the time function of a free particle and even a large set of distributions comprising the tempered distributions.
We present an original approach to quantization based on operator-valued measure that generalizes the so-called Berezin-Klauder-Toeplitz quantization, and more generally coherent state quantization approches.
The quantization of systems with first- and second-class constraints within the coherent-state path-integral approach is extended to quantum systems with fermionic degrees of freedom. As in the bosonic case the importance of path-integral measures for Lagrange multipliers, which in this case are in general expected to be elements of a Grassmann algebra, is emphasized. Several examples with first- and second-class constraints are discussed.
We propose a mechanism to describe how a physical quantity, which initially can take continuous values, is restricted within some discrete values after a measurement. As an example of the present theory, in which interplay between coherence of motion and fluctuation from disturbance plays an important role, we investigate motion of a spin state in a magnetic field. First, we point out that discrete eigenstates are formed from continuous states as a result of coherence of precession motion of a spin. Next, by assuming disturbance from environmental electromagnetic fields, we investigate tempora…
We investigate the consistency of coherent state (or Berezin-Klauder-Toeplitz, or anti-Wick) quantization in regard to physical observations in the non- relativistic (or Galilean) regime. We compare this procedure with the canonical quantization (on both mathematical and physical levels) and examine whether they are or not equivalent in their predictions: is it possible to dif- ferentiate them on a strictly physical level? As far as only usual dynamical observables (position, momentum, energy, ...) are concerned, the quantization through coherent states is proved to be a perfectly valid altern…
By using a coherent state quantization of paragrassmann variables, operators are constructed in finite Hilbert spaces. We thus obtain in a straightforward way a matrix representation of the paragrassmann algebra. This algebra of finite matrices realizes a deformed Weyl-Heisenberg algebra. The study of mean values in coherent states of some of these operators lead to interesting conclusions.
It is shown that quantization of the dynamical systems with second class constraints actually can be reduced to quantization of the systems with first class constraints. The motion of the non-relativistic particle along the plane curve and on a surface is considered. The results coincide with those of the "thin layer method". Influence of the non-physical variables on the physical sector is demonstrated.
We propose a method of quantization based on Hamilton-Jacobi theory in the presence of a random constraint due to the fluctuations of a set of hidden random variables. Given a Lagrangian, it reproduces the results of canonical quantization yet with a unique ordering of operators if the Lagrange multiplier that arises in the dynamical system with constraint can only take binary values $\pm\hbar/2$ with equal probability.
Susskind-Glogower coherent states, whose Fock expansion coefficients include Bessel functions, have recently attracted considerable attention for their optical properties. Nevertheless, identity resolution is still an open question, which is an essential mathematical property that defines an overcomplete basis in the Fock space and allows a coherent state quantization map. In this regard, the modified Susskind-Glogower coherent states have been introduced as an alternative family of states that resolve the identity resolution. In the present manuscript, the quantization map related to the modi…
It is known that the anti-Wick (or standard coherent state) quantization of the complex plane produces both canonical commutation rule and quantum spectrum of the harmonic oscillator (up to the addition of a constant). In the present work, we show that these two issues are not necessarily coupled: there exists a family of separable Hilbert spaces, including the usual Fock-Bargmann space, and in each element in this family there exists an overcomplete set of unit-norm states resolving the unity. With the exception of the Fock-Bargmann case, they all produce non-canonical commutation relation wh…
Affine variables, which have the virtue of preserving the positive-definite character of matrix-like objects, have been suggested as replacements for the canonical variables of standard quantization schemes, especially in the context of quantum gravity. We develop the kinematics of such variables, discussing suitable coherent states, their associated resolution of unity, polarizations, and finally the realization of the coherent-state overlap function in terms of suitable path-integral formulations.
A membrane technique, in which the symplectic and Ricci forms are integrated over surfaces in a complexification of the phase space, as well a ``creation" connection with zero curvature over lagrangian submanifolds, is used to obtain a unified quantization including a noncommutative algebra of functions, its representations, the Dirac axioms, coherent integral transformations for solutions of spectral and Cauchy problems, and trace formulas. (To be published in Russian Journal of Mathematical Physics,1995,v.3,n.3)
For a single degree of freedom confined mechanical system with given energy, we know that the motion is always periodic and action-angle variables are convenient choice as conjugate phase-space variables. We construct action-angle coherent states in view to provide a quantization scheme that yields precisely a given observed energy spectrum ${E_n}$ for such a system. This construction is based on a Bayesian approach: each family corresponds to a choice of probability distributions such that the classical energy averaged with respect to this probability distribution is precisely $E_n$ up to a c…
This paper discusses the canonical quantization of 1+1-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a spacetime cylinder, from the point of view of coherent states, or equivalently, the Segal-Bargmann transform. Before gauge symmetry is imposed, the coherent states are simply ordinary coherent states labeled by points in an infinite-dimensional linear phase space. Gauge symmetry is imposed by projecting the original coherent states onto the gauge-invariant subspace, using a suitable regularization procedure. We obtain in this way a new family of "reduced" coherent states labeled by points in the reduced p…
A construction of the 2d and 4d fuzzy de Sitter hyperboloids is carried out by using a (vector) coherent state quantization. We get a natural discretization of the dS "time" axis based on the spectrum of Casimir operators of the respective maximal compact subgroups SO(2) and SO(4) of the de Sitter groups SO\_0(1,2) and SO\_0(1,4). The continuous limit at infinite spins is examined.
We revisit the quantized version of the harmonic oscillator obtained through a q-dependent family of coherent states. For each q, 0< q < 1, these normalized states form an overcomplete set that resolves the unity with respect to an explicit measure. We restrict our study to the case in which 1/q is a quadratic unit Pisot number: the q-deformed integers form Fibonacci-like sequences of integers. We then examine the main characteristics of the corresponding quantum oscillator: localization in the configuration and in the phase spaces, angle operator, probability distributions and related statist…
We propose a prescription to quantize classical monomials in terms of symmetric and ordered expansions of non-commuting operators of a bosonic theory. As a direct application of such quantization rules, we quantize a classically time evolved function $\mathcal{O}(q,p,t)$, and calculate its expectation value in coherent states. The result can be expressed in terms of the application of a classical operator which performs a {\em Gaussian smoothing} of the original function $\mathcal{O}$ evaluated at the center of the coherent state. This scheme produces a natural semi-classical expansion for the…
We explore the group theoretical underpinning of noncommutative quantum mechanics for a system moving on the two-dimensional plane. We show that the pertinent groups for the system are the two-fold central extension of the Galilei group in $(2+1)$-space-time dimensions and the two-fold extension of the group of translations of $\mathbb R^4$. This latter group is just the standard Weyl-Heisenberg group of standard quantum mechanics with an additional central extension. We also look at a further extension of this group and discuss its significance to noncommutative quantum mechanics. We build un…
Multi-photon and coherent states of light are formulated in terms of a reducible representation of canonical commutation relations. Standard properties of such states are recovered as certain limiting cases. The new formalism leads to field operators and not operator-valued distributions. The example of radiation fields produced by a classical current shows an automatic regularization of the infrared divergence.
Using azimuthally symmetrized cylindrical coordinates, we report the consequences of zero-energy quantal states on the von Roos Hamiltonian. A position-dependent mass M(ρ,ϕ,z)=bz^{j}ρ^{2\u{psion}+1}/2 is used. We show that the zero-energy setting not only offers an additional degree of freedom towards feasible separability for the von Roos Hamiltonian, but also manifestly yields auxiliary quantized ambiguity parametric constraints.
Systems with constraints pose problems when they are quantized. Moreover, the Dirac procedure of quantization prior to reduction is preferred. The projection operator method of quantization, which can be most conveniently described by coherent state path integrals, enables one to directly impose a regularized form of the quantum constraints. This procedure also overcomes conventional difficulties with normalization and second class constraints that invalidate conventional Dirac quantization procedures.
Motivated by some well-known results in the phase space description of quantum optics and quantum information theory, we aim to describe the formalism of quantum field theory by explicitly considering the holomorphic representation for a scalar field within the deformation quantization program. Notably, the symbol of a symmetric ordered operator in terms of holomorphic variables may be straightforwardly obtained by the quantum field analogue of the Husimi distribution associated with a normal ordered operator. This relation also allows establishing a $c$-equivalence between the Moyal and the n…
We examine two singular Lagrangian systems with constraints which apparently reduce the phase space to a 2-dimensional sphere and a 2-dimensional hyperboloid. Rigorous constraint analysis by Dirac's method, however, gives 2-dimensional open disc and an infinite plane with a hole in the centre respectively as the reduced phase spaces. Upon canonical quantisation the classical constraints show up as restrictions on the Hilbert space.
We explain the powerful role that operator-valued measures can play in quantizing any set equipped with a measure, for instance a group (resp. group coset) with its invariant (resp. quasi-invariant) measure. Coherent state quantization is a particular case. Such integral quantizations are illustrated with two examples based on the Weyl-Heisenberg group and on the affine group respectively. An interesting application of the affine quantization in quantum cosmology is mentioned, and we sketch a construction of new coherent states for the hydrogen atom.
As basic elements of the quantum computer - quantum bits (qubits) we offer semiconductor quantum dots containing one electron each and consisting each of two tunnel-connected parts. The numerical solution of a Schroedinger equation with the account of Coulomb field of adjacent electrons shows, that in such structures the realization of a full set of basic logic operations which are necessary for fulfillment of quantum computations is possible. Durations of one- and two-qubit operations versus qubit geometry are obtained. Decoherence rates due to spontaneous emission of phonons and acoustic pho…
A new family of 2-component vector-valued coherent states for the quantum particle motion in an infinite square well potential is presented. They allow a consistent quantization of the classical phase space and observables for a particle in this potential. We then study the resulting position and (well-defined) momentum operators. We also consider their mean values in coherent states and their quantum dispersions.
The Hamiltonian of the harmonic oscillator is usually defined as a differential operator, but an integral representation can be obtained by using the coherent state quantization. The finite frame quantization is a finite counterpart of the coherent state quantization and it allows us to define a finite oscillator by starting from the integral representation of the harmonic oscillator. Our purpose is to investigate the oscillator obtained in this way, and to present a possible application to the discrete fractional Fourier transform.
New measures for the quantization of systems with constraints are discussed and applied to several examples, in particular, examples of alternative but equivalent formulations of given first-class constraints, as well as a comparison of regular and irregular constraints.
The conversion of second-class constraints into first-class constraints is used to extend the coordinate-free path integral quantization, achieved by a flat-space Brownian motion regularization of the coherent-state path integral measure, to systems with second-class constraints.
In this paper we study a two-dimensional [2D] rotationally symmetric harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frictional force. At the classical level, we solve the equations of motion for a particular case of the time-dependent coefficient of friction. At the quantum level, we use the Lewis-Riesenfeld procedure of invariants to construct exact solutions for the corresponding time-dependent Schrödinger equations. The eigenfunctions obtained are in terms of the generalized Laguerre polynomials. By mean of the solutions we verify a generalization version of the Heisenberg's uncertainty relation a…
We study the canonical and the coherent state quantization of a particle moving in a magnetic field on a non-commutative plane. Starting from the so called θ-modified action, we perform the canonical quantization and analyze the gauge dependence of the obtained quantum theory. We construct the Malkin-Man'ko coherent states of the system in question, and the corresponding quantization. On this base, we study the relation between the coherent states and the "classical" trajectories predicted by the θ-modified action. In addition, we construct different semiclassical states, making use of special…
Enhanced quantization offers a different classical/quantum connection than that of canonical quantization in which $\hbar >0$ throughout. This result arises when the only allowed Hilbert space vectors allowed in the quantum action functional are coherent states, which leads to the classical action functional augmented by additional terms of order $\hbar$. Canonical coherent states are defined by unitary transformations of a fixed, fiducial vector. While Gaussian vectors are commonly used as fiducial vectors, they cannot be used for all systems. We focus on choosing fiducial vectors for several…
Based on the results of a recent reexamination of the quantization of systems with first-class and second-class constraints from the point of view of coherent-state phase-space path integration, we give additional examples of the quantization procedure for reparameterization invariant Hamiltonians, for systems for which the original set of Lagrange multipliers are elevated to dynamical variables, as well as extend the formalism to include cases of first-class constraints the operator form of which have a spectral gap about the value zero that characterizes the quantum constraint subspace.
A solution to a version of the Stieltjes moment problem is presented. Using this solution, we construct a family of coherent states of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field. We prove that these states form an overcomplete set that is normalized and solves the identity. By the help of the coherent states we construct the Fock-Bergmann representation related to the particle quantization. This quantization procedure takes into account a circle topology of the classical motion.
The inclusion of non-Abelian U(N) internal charges (other than the electric charge) into Twistor Theory is accomplished through the concept of "colored twistors" (ctwistors for short) transforming under the colored conformal symmetry U(2N,2N). In particular, we are interested in 2N-ctwistors describing colored spinless conformal massive particles with phase space U(2N,2N)/[U(2N)xU(2N)]. Penrose formulas for incidence relations are generalized to N>1. We propose U(2N)-gauge invariant Lagrangians for 2N-ctwistors and we quantize them through a bosonic representation, interpreting quantum states …
Systems under holonomic constraints are classified within the generalized Hamiltonian framework as second-class constraints systems. We show that each system of point particles with holonomic constraints has a hidden gauge symmetry which allows to quantize it in the original phase space as a first-class constraints system. The proposed method is illustrated with quantization of a point particle moving on an $n-1$-dimensional sphere $S^{n-1}$ as well as its field theory analog the O(n) nonlinear sigma model.
We outline the principal results of a recent examination of the quantization of systems with first- and second-class constraints from the point of view of coherent-state phase-space path integration. Two examples serve to illustrate the procedures.
Non-canonical quantization is based on certain reducible representations of canonical commutation relations. Relativistic formalism for electromagnetic non-canonical quantum fields is introduced. Unitary representations of the Poincaré group at the level of fields and states are explicitly given. Multi-photon and coherent states are introduced. Statistics of photons in a coherent state is Poissonian if an appropriately defined thermodynamic limit is performed. Radiation fields having a correct $S$ matrix are constructed. The $S$ matrix is given by a non-canonical coherent-state displacement op…
Finite frame quantization is a discrete version of the coherent state quantization. In the case of a quantum system with finite-dimensional Hilbert space, the finite frame quantization allows us to associate a linear operator to each function defined on the discrete phase space of the system. We investigate the properties of the density operators which can be defined by using this method.
In the Skyrme model, the Lagrangian can be quantized in several ways using the collective coordinate approach. Not all of which produce quantum states that can be interpreted as physical particles. For example the SU(2) collective coordinate approach produces both integral and half-integral spin and isospin states. Only half of these are the physical baryons. Less well known is the fact that it is equally possible to quantize the system using the SO(3) collective coordinates. This produces only unphysical integral spin and isospin states. To fulfill the goal of being able to express a classica…
The coordinate-free formulation of canonical quantization, achieved by a flat-space Brownian motion regularization of phase-space path integrals, is extended to a special class of closed first-class constrained systems that is broad enough to include Yang-Mills type theories with an arbitrary compact gauge group. Central to this extension are the use of coherent state path integrals and of Lagrange multiplier integrations that engender projection operators onto the subspace of gauge invariant states.
This work addresses certain ambiguities in the Dirac approach to constrained systems. Specifically, we investigate the space of so-called ``rigging maps'' associated with Refined Algebraic Quantization, a particular realization of the Dirac scheme. Our main result is to provide a condition under which the rigging map is unique, in which case we also show that it is given by group averaging techniques. Our results comprise all cases where the gauge group is a finite-dimensional Lie group.
Quantum versions of cylindric phase space, like for the motion of a particle on the circle, are obtained through different families of coherent states. The latter are built from various probability distributions of the action variable. The method is illustrated with Gaussian distributions and uniform distributions on intervals, and resulting quantizations are explored.
