A two-level system that is coupled to a high-finesse cavity in the Purcell regime exhibits a giant optical non-linearity due to the saturation of the two-level system at very low intensities, of the order of one photon per lifetime. We perform a detailed analysis of this effect, taking into account the most important practical imperfections. Our conclusion is that an experimental demonstration of the giant non-linearity should be feasible using semiconductor micropillar cavities containing a single quantum dot in resonance with the cavity mode.
We study the behavior of a single laser-driven trapped ion inside a microscopic optical Fabry-Perot cavity. In particular, we demonstrate a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity operating on the principal $S_{1/2}\to P_{1/2}$ electric dipole transition of an Yb$^+$ ion at $369\,$nm with an atom-ion coupling strength of $g=2π\times 67(1)\,$MHz. We employ the cavity to study the generation of single photons and observe cavity-induced back-action in the Purcell-enhanced emission of photons. Tuning of the amplitude and phase of the back-action allows us to enhance or suppress the total rate of photoemission fr…
Cavity-embedded quantum emitters show strong modifications of free space radiation properties such as an enhanced decay known as the Purcell effect. The central parameter is the cooperativity $C$, the ratio of the square of the coherent cavity coupling strength over the product of cavity and emitter decay rates. For a single emitter, $C$ is independent of the transition dipole moment and dictated by geometric cavity properties such as finesse and mode waist. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 093601 (2017)] we have shown that collective excitations in ensembles of dipole-dipole coupled qu…
We show that a two-level atom resonantly coupled to one of the modes of a cavity field can be used as a sensitive tool to measure the proper acceleration of a combined atom-cavity system. To achieve it we investigate the relation between the transition probability of a two-level atom placed within an ideal cavity and study how it is affected by the acceleration of the whole. We indicate how to choose the position of the atom as well as its characteristic frequency in order to maximize the sensitivity to acceleration.
It is usually assumed that when performing a photoluminescence experiment on a microcavity containing an inhomogeneously broadened quantum dots ensemble, the cavity mode appears as a positive peak with a linewidth that reflects the mode quality factor Q. We show in this article that this conclusion is in general not true, and that the measured mode linewidth depends strongly on the excitation power for microcavities having large Purcell factors. We analyze theoretically this effect in the case of the micropillar cavity and we show that the same microcavity can give rise to a large variety of p…
Purcell-enhanced emission from a coupled emitter-cavity system is a fundamental manifestation of cavity quantum electrodynamics. Starting from a theoretical description we derive a scheme for photon emission from an emitter coupled to a birefringent cavity that exceeds hitherto anticipated limitations. Based on a recent study and experimental investigation of the intra-cavity coupling of orthogonal polarisation modes in birefringent cavities, we now decouple the emitter and the photon prior to emission from the cavity mode. Effectively, this is "hiding" the emitter from the photon in the cavit…
We observe a sixfold Purcell broadening of the D$_2$ line of an optically trapped $^{87}\text{Rb}$ atom strongly coupled to a fiber cavity. Under external illumination by a near-resonant laser, up to $90\%$ of the atom's fluorescence is emitted into the resonant cavity mode. The sub-Poissonian statistics of the cavity output and the Purcell enhancement of the atomic decay rate are confirmed by the observation of a strongly narrowed antibunching dip in the photon autocorrelation function. The photon leakage through the higher-transmission mirror of the single-sided resonator is the dominant con…
We demonstrate a deterministic Purcell-enhanced single-photon source realized by integrating an atomically thin WSe$_{2}$ layer with a circular Bragg grating cavity. The cavity significantly enhances the photoluminescence from the atomically thin layer, and supports single-photon generation with $g^{(2)}(0)<0.25$. We observe a consistent increase of the spontaneous emission rate for WSe$_{2}$ emitters located in the center of the Bragg grating cavity. These WSe$_{2}$ emitters are self-aligned and deterministically coupled to such a broadband cavity, configuring a new generation of deterministi…
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond has been established as a prime building block for quantum networks. However, scaling beyond a few network nodes is currently limited by low spin-photon entanglement rates, resulting from the NV center's low probability of coherent photon emission and collection. Integration into a cavity can boost both values via the Purcell effect, but poor optical coherence of near-surface NV centers has so far prevented their resonant optical control, as would be required for entanglement generation. Here, we overcome this challenge, and demonstrate resonant addr…
Hybrid quantum photonics combines classical photonics with quantum emitters in a postprocessing step. It facilitates to link ideal quantum light sources to optimized photonic platforms. Optical cavities enable to harness the Purcell-effect boosting the device efficiency. Here, we postprocess a free-standing, crossed-waveguide photonic crystal cavity based on Si$_3$N$_4$ with SiV$^-$ center in nanodiamonds. We develop a routine that holds the capability to optimize all degrees of freedom of the evanescent coupling term utilizing AFM nanomanipulation. After a few optimization cycles we resolve t…
The interaction of single quantum emitters with an optical cavity enables the realization of efficient spin-photon interfaces, an essential resource for quantum networks. The dynamical control of the spontaneous emission rate of quantum emitters in cavities has important implications in quantum technologies, e.g. for shaping the emitted photons waveform, for generating quantum entanglement, or for driving coherently the optical transition while preventing photon emission. Here we demonstrate the dynamical control of the Purcell enhanced emission of a small ensemble of erbium ions doped into na…
We study a photonic circuit consisting of a quantum dot, QD, coupled to a photon cavity over a wide range of temperature up to room temperature. A key component of such a system is presented here in the form of a Purcell-enhanced single-photon source based on Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics, cQED. We use a real set of pure dephasing data extracted from experimental measurements of InGaAs QD to calculate the effective QD-cavity coupling strength, the Purcell factor, and the single photon efficiency emerged from the QD-cavity system in the cases without and with detuning. In the non-detuned syste…
Nanoscale semiconductor lasers have been developed recently using either metal, metallo-dielectric or photonic crystal nanocavities. While the technology of nanolasers is steadily being deployed, their expected performance for on-chip optical interconnects is still largely unknown due to a limited understanding of some of their key features. Specifically, as the cavity size is reduced with respect to the emission wavelength, the stimulated and the spontaneous emission rates are modified, which is known as the Purcell effect in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics. This effect is expec…
Optically-active spin systems coupled to photonic cavities with high cooperativity can generate strong light-matter interactions, a key ingredient in quantum networks. But obtaining high cooperativities for quantum information processing often involves the use of photonic crystal cavities that feature a poor optical access from the free space, especially to circularly polarized light required for the coherent control of the spin. Here, we demonstrate coupling with cooperativity as high as $8$ of an InAs/GaAs quantum dot to a fabricated bullseye cavity that provides nearly degenerate and Gaussi…
The linear driving for a single-mode optical field in a cavity can result from the external driving of classical field even when the coupling between the classical field and the cavity is weak. We revisit this well known effect with a microscopic model where a classical field is applied to a wall of the cavity to excite the atoms in the wall, and re-combination of the low excitations of the wall mediates a linear driving for the single-mode field inside the cavity. With such modeling about the indirect driving through the quantum excitations of the wall, we theoretically predict several non-li…
Ultracompact nonlinear optical devices utilizing two-dimensional (2D) materials and nanostructures are emerging as important elements of photonic circuits. Integration of the nonlinear material into a subwavelength cavity or waveguide leads to a strong Purcell enhancement of the nonlinear processes and compensates for a small interaction volume. The generic feature of such devices which makes them especially challenging for analysis is strong dissipation of both the nonlinear polarization and highly confined modes of a subwavelength cavity. Here we solve a quantum-electrodynamic problem of the…
We present the controlled creation of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers via ion implantation at the center of a photonic crystal cavity which is fabricated in an ultrapure, single crystal diamond membrane. High-resolution placement of NV centers is achieved using collimation of a 5keV-nitrogen ion beam through a pierced tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM). We demonstrate coupling of the implanted NV centers' broad band fluorescence to a cavity mode and observe Purcell enhancement of the spontaneous emission. The results are in good agreement with a master equation model for the cavity c…
We analyze the Purcell relaxation rate of a superconducting qubit coupled to a resonator, which is coupled to a transmission line and pumped by an external microwave drive. Considering the typical regime of the qubit measurement, we focus on the case when the qubit frequency is significantly detuned from the resonator frequency. Surprisingly, the Purcell rate decreases when the strength of the microwave drive is increased. This suppression becomes significant in the nonlinear regime. In the presence of the microwave drive, the loss of photons to the transmission line also causes excitation of …
We develop a new approach to understanding intrinsic mechanisms that cause the $T_1$-decay rate of a multi-level superconducting qubit to depend on the photonic population of a coupled, detuned cavity. Our method yields simple analytic expressions for both the coherently driven or thermally excited cases which are in good agreement with full master equation numerics, and also facilitates direct physical intuition. It also predicts several new phenomena. In particular, we find that in a wide range of settings, the cavity-qubit detuning controls whether a non-zero photonic population increases o…
High-bit-rate nanocavity-based single photon sources in the 1,550-nm telecom band are challenges facing the development of fibre-based long-haul quantum communication networks. Here we report a very fast single photon source in the 1,550-nm telecom band, which is achieved by a large Purcell enhancement that results from the coupling of a single InAs quantum dot and an InP photonic crystal nanocavity. At a resonance, the spontaneous emission rate was enhanced by a factor of 5 resulting a record fast emission lifetime of 0.2 ns at 1,550 nm. We also demonstrate that this emission exhibits an enha…
Optical microcavities are a powerful tool to enhance spontaneous emission of individual quantum emitters. However, the broad emission spectra encountered in the solid state at room temperature limit the influence of a cavity, and call for ultra-small mode volume. We demonstrate Purcell-enhanced single photon emission from nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds coupled to a tunable fiber-based microcavity with a mode volume down to $1.0\,λ^{3}$. We record cavity-enhanced fluorescence images and study several single emitters with one cavity. The Purcell effect is evidenced by enhanced flu…
Silicon carbide has recently been developed as a platform for optically addressable spin defects. In particular, the neutral divacancy in the 4H polytype displays an optically addressable spin-1 ground state and near-infrared optical emission. Here, we present the Purcell enhancement of a single neutral divacancy coupled to a photonic crystal cavity. We utilize a combination of nanolithographic techniques and a dopant-selective photoelectrochemical etch to produce suspended cavities with quality factors exceeding 5,000. Subsequent coupling to a single divacancy leads to a Purcell factor of ~50…
We show that a waveguide that is normally opaque due to interaction with a drop-filter cavity can be made transparent when the drop filter is also coupled to a dipole. A transparency condition is derived between the cavity lifetime and vacuum Rabi frequency of the dipole. This condition is much weaker than strong coupling, and amounts to simply achieving large Purcell factors. Thus, we can observe transparency in the weak coupling regime. We describe how this effect can be useful for designing quantum repeaters for long distance quantum communication.
We analyse the possibilities for quantum state engineering offered by a model for Kerr-type non-linearity enhanced by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), which was recently proposed by Petrosyan and Kurizki [{\sl Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 65}, 33833 (2002)]. We go beyond the semiclassical treatment and derive a quantum version of the model with both a full Hamiltonian approach and an analysis in terms of dressed states. The preparation of an entangled coherent state via a cross-phase modulation effect is demonstrated. We briefly show that the violation of locality for such an entangled co…
On-chip single-photon sources are key components for integrated photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots can exhibit near-ideal single-photon emission but this can be significantly degraded in on-chip geometries owing to nearby etched surfaces. A long-proposed solution to improve the indistinguishablility is by using the Purcell effect to reduce the radiative lifetime. However, until now only modest Purcell enhancements have been observed. Here we use pulsed resonant excitation to eliminate slow relaxation paths, revealing a highly Purcell-shortened radiative lifetime (22.7 ps…
We present the design and implementation of a trapped ion cavity QED system. A single ytterbium ion is confined by a micron-scale ion trap inside a 2 mm optical cavity. The ion is coherently pumped by near resonant laser light while the cavity output is monitored as a function of pump intensity and cavity detuning. We observe a Purcell enhancement of scattered light into the solid angle subtended by the optical cavity, as well as a three-peak structure arising from strongly driving the atom. This system can be integrated into existing atom{photon quantum network protocols and is a pathway towa…
We have fabricated pillar microcavity samples with Bragg mirrors consisting of alternate layers of GaAs and Aluminium Oxide. Compared to the more widely studied GaAs/AlAs micropillars these mirrors can achieve higher reflectivities with fewer layer repeats and reduce the mode volume. We have studied a number of samples containing a low density of InGaAs/GaAs self assembled quantum dots in a cavity and here report observation of a three fold enhancement in the radiative lifetime of a quantum dot exciton state due to the Purcell effect.
We calculate the dispersive properties of the reflected field from a cavity coupled to a single dipole. We show that when a field is resonant with the dipole it experiences a 90 degree phase shift relative to reflection from a bare cavity if the Purcell factor exceeds the bare cavity reflectivity. We then show that optically Stark shifting the dipole with a second field can be used to achieve giant Kerr non-linearites. It is shown that currently achievable cavity lifetimes and cavity quality factors can allow a single emitter in the cavity to impose a nonlinear $π$ phase shift at the single ph…
We report on the observation of bright emission of single photons under pulsed resonance fluorescence conditions from a single quantum dot (QD) in a micropillar cavity. The brightness of the QD fluorescence is greatly enhanced via the coupling to the fundamental mode of a micropillar, allowing us to determine a single photon extraction efficiency of $(20.7\pm0.8)~\%$ per linear polarization basis. This yields an overall extraction efficiency of $(41.4\pm1.5)~\%$ in our device. We observe the first Rabi-oscillation in a weakly coupled quantum dot-micropillar system under coherent pulsed optical…
The combination of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with photonic cavities is a promising way to realize non-classical light sources with state-of-the-art performances in terms of brightness, indistinguishability and repetition rate. In the present work we demonstrate the coupling of an InGaAs/GaAs QDs emitting in the telecom O-band to a circular Bragg grating cavity. We demonstrate a broadband geometric extraction efficiency enhancement by investigating two emission lines under above-band excitation, inside and detuned from the cavity mode, respectively. In the first case, a Purcell enhanceme…
In this work we present a platform for testing the device performance of a cavity-emitter system, using an ensemble of emitters and a tapered optical fiber. This method provides high-contrast spectra of the cavity modes, selective detection of emitters coupled to the cavity, and an estimate of the device performance in the single- emitter case. Using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond and a GaP optical microcavity, we are able to tune the cavity onto the NV resonance at 10 K, couple the cavity-coupled emission to a tapered fiber, and measure the fiber-coupled NV spontaneous emission deca…
We discuss a simple and experimentally realizable model for creation of enhanced Kerr nonlinearities accompanied by vanishing absorption. The model involves a V-type atom subjected to a strong drive laser, a weak probe laser and coupled to a single-mode cavity field. Working in the bad-cavity limit, we find that the simultaneous coupling of the cavity field to both atomic transitions creates a coherence between the transitions and thus can lead to quantum interference effects. We investigate the influences of the cavity field frequency, the cavity field-atom coupling constants and the atomic d…
We present a new scheme for controlling the quantum state of a harmonic oscillator by coupling it to an anharmonic multilevel system (MLS) with first to second excited state transition frequency on-resonance with the oscillator. In this scheme that we call "ef-resonant", the spurious oscillator Kerr non-linearity inherited from the MLS is very small, while its Fock states can still be selectively addressed via an MLS transition at a frequency that depends on the number of photons. We implement this concept in a circuit-QED setup with a microwave 3D cavity (the oscillator, with frequency 6.4 GH…
We demonstrate optical probing of spectrally resolved single Nd rare-earth ions in yttrium orthovanadate. The ions are coupled to a photonic crystal resonator and show strong enhancement of the optical emission rate via the Purcell effect, resulting in near radiatively limited single photon emission. The measured high coupling cooperativity between a single photon and the ion allows for the observation of coherent optical Rabi oscillations. This could enable optically controlled spin qubits, quantum logic gates, and spin-photon interfaces for future quantum networks.
We present a new approach to incorporate self-assembled quantum dots into a Fabry-Pérot-like microcavity. Thereby a 3$λ$/4 GaAs layer containing quantum dots is epitaxially removed and attached by van der Waals bonding to one of the microcavity mirrors. We reach a finesse as high as 4,100 with this configuration limited by the reflectivity of the dielectric mirrors and not by scattering at the semiconductor - mirror interface, demonstrating that the epitaxial lift-off procedure is a promising procedure for cavity quantum electrodynamics in the solid state. As a first step in this direction, we…
