The combination of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with photonic cavities is a promising way to realize non-classical light sources with state-of-the-art performances in terms of brightness, indistinguishability and repetition rate. In the present work we demonstrate the coupling of an InGaAs/GaAs QDs emitting in the telecom O-band to a circular Bragg grating cavity. We demonstrate a broadband geometric extraction efficiency enhancement by investigating two emission lines under above-band excitation, inside and detuned from the cavity mode, respectively. In the first case, a Purcell enhancement of 4 is attained. For the latter case, an end-to-end brightness of 1.4% with a brightness at the first lens of 23% is achieved. Using p-shell pumping, a combination of high count rate with pure single-photon emission (g(2)(0) = 0.01 in saturation) is achieved. Finally a good single-photon purity (g(2)(0) = 0.13) together with a high detector count rate of 191kcps is demonstrated for a temperature of up to 77K.
High-bit-rate nanocavity-based single photon sources in the 1,550-nm telecom band are challenges facing the development of fibre-based long-haul quantum communication networks. Here we report a very fast single photon source in the 1,550-nm telecom band, which is achieved by a large Purcell enhancement that results from the coupling of a single InAs quantum dot and an InP photonic crystal nanocavity. At a resonance, the spontaneous emission rate was enhanced by a factor of 5 resulting a record fast emission lifetime of 0.2 ns at 1,550 nm. We also demonstrate that this emission exhibits an enha…
We experimentally study Bragg-scattering four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber at telecom wavelengths using photon counters. We explore the polarization dependence of this process with a continuous wave signal in the macroscopic and attenuated regime, with a wavelength shift of 23 nm. Our measurements of mean photon numbers per second under various pump polarization configurations agree well with the theoretical and numerical predictions based on classical models. We discuss the impact of noise under these different polarization configurations.
Hybrid photonic-plasmonic cavities can be tailored to display high Q-factors and extremely small mode volumes simultaneously, which results in large values of the Purcell factor, FP. Amongst the different hybrid configurations, those based on a nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPoM) plasmonic cavity provide one of the lowest mode volumes, though so far their operation has been constrained to wavelengths below 1 μm. Here, we propose a hybrid configuration consisting of a silicon photonic crystal cavity with a slot at its center in which a gold nanoparticle is introduced. This hybrid system operates at…
Semiconductor quantum dots embedded in hybrid circular Bragg gratings are a promising platform for the efficient generation of nonclassical light. The scalable fabrication of multiple devices with similar performance is highly desirable for their practical use as sources of single and entangled photons, while the ability to operate at telecom wavelength is essential for their integration with the existing fiber infrastructure. In this work we combine the promising properties of broadband hybrid circular Bragg gratings with a membrane-transfer process performed on 3" wafer scale. We develop and…
The development of efficient sources of single photons and entangled photon pairs emitting in the low-loss wavelength region around 1550 nm is crucial for long-distance quantum communication. Moreover, direct fiber coupling and electrical carrier injection are highly desirable for deployment in compact and user-friendly systems integrated with the existing fiber infrastructure. Here we present a detailed design study of circular Bragg gratings etched in InP slabs and operating in the telecom C-band. These devices enable the simultaneous enhancement of the X and XX spectral lines, with collecti…
Compared to traditional nonlinear optical crystals, like BaB$_2$O$_4$, KTiOPO$_4$ or LiNbO$_3$, semiconductor integrated sources of photon pairs may operate at pump wavelengths much closer to the bandgap of the materials. This is also the case for Bragg-reflection waveguides (BRW) targeting parametric down-conversion (PDC) to the telecom C-band. The large nonlinear coefficient of the AlGaAs alloy and the strong confinement of the light enable extremely bright integrated photon pair sources. However, under certain circumstances, a significant amount of detrimental broadband photoluminescence ha…
Bright single photon emission from single quantum dots in suspended circular Bragg grating microcavities is demonstrated. This geometry has been designed to achieve efficient (> 50 %) single photon extraction into a near-Gaussian shaped far-field pattern, modest (~10x) Purcell enhancement of the radiative rate, and a spectral bandwidth of a few nanometers. Measurements of fabricated devices show progress towards these goals, with collection efficiencies as high as ~10% demonstrated with moderate spectral bandwidth and rate enhancement. Photon correlation measurements are performed under above-…
We present a design study of quantum light sources based on hybrid circular Bragg Gratings (CBGs) for emission wavelengths in the telecom O-band. The evaluated CBG designs show photon extraction efficiencies > 95% and Purcell factors close to 30. Using simulations based on the finite element method, and considering the influence of possible fabrication imperfections, we identify optimized high-performance CBG designs which are robust against structural aberrations. In particular, full 3D simulations reveal that the designs show robustness regarding deviations of the emitter position in the dev…
We demonstrate experimentally that spontaneous parametric down-conversion in an AlGaAs semiconductor Bragg reflection waveguide can make for paired photons highly entangled in the polarization degree of freedom at the telecommunication wavelength of 1550 nm. The pairs of photons show visibility higher than 90% in several polarization bases and violate a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell-like inequality by more than 3 standard deviations. This represents a significant step toward the realization of efficient and versatile self pumped sources of entangled photon pairs on-chip.
The coupling of CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot (QD) emission to micropillar cavity eigenmodes in the weak coupling regime is demonstrated. We analyze photoluminescence spectra of QDs embedded in monolithic micropillar cavities based on Bragg mirrors which contain MgSe/ZnTe/MgTe superlattices as low-index material. The pillar emission shows pronounced cavity eigenmodes and their spectral shape is in good agreement with simulations. QD emission in resonance with the cavity mode is shown to be efficiently guided toward the detector and an experimental Purcell enhancement by a factor of 5.7 is determined, …
Long-distance quantum communication relies on the ability to efficiently generate and prepare single photons at telecom wavelengths. In many applications these photons must also be indistinguishable such that they exhibit interference on a beamsplitter, which implements effective photon-photon interactions. However, deterministic generation of indistinguishable single photons with high brightness remains a challenging problem. We demonstrate two-photon interference at telecom wavelengths using an InAs/InP quantum dot in a nanophotonic cavity. The cavity enhances the quantum dot emission, resul…
Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are of great interest for on-chip nanophotonics due to their unique optoelectronic properties. Here, we propose and realize coupling of tungsten diselenide (WSe2) monolayers to circular Bragg grating structures to achieve enhanced emission. The interaction between WSe2 and the resonant mode of the structure results in Purcell-enhanced emission, while the symmetric geometrical structure improves the directionality of the out-coupling stream of emitted photons. Furthermore, this hybrid structure produces a record high contrast of the spin v…
Control over spontaneous emission rate is important for improving efficiency in different semiconductor applications including lasers, LEDs and photovoltaics. Usually, an emitter should be placed inside the cavity to increase spontaneous emission rate, although it is technologically challenging. Here we experimentally demonstrate a phenomenon of super-radiance observed in a cavity-less periodic Bragg structure based on InAs monolayer-thick multiple quantum wells (MQW). The collective super-radiant mode shows enhanced emission rate for specific angles and frequencies. This behaviour correlates …
We demonstrate single-mode lasing at telecommunication wavelengths from a circular nanocavity employing a radial Bragg reflector. Ultra-small modal volume and Sub milliwatt pump threshold level are observed for lasers with InGaAsP quantum well active membrane. The electromagnetic field is shown to be tightly confined within the 300nm central pillar of the cavity. The quality factors of the resonator modal fields are estimated to be on the order of a few thousands.
We report a new gateway to enhance the sponatnesous emission rate of single quantum emitters by introducing a cavity in tilted nanofiber Bragg grating (TNFBG). We found that light emitter's coupling efficiency into the tilted grating structure's guided mode is 65%, with 70 grating periods. This novel tilted structure has a high Q factor ~ 1408.71 and low mode volume ~ 0.66 microm3- an important requirement. Further, the Purcell factor of a quantum light emitter inside the nanofiber is nine times more than that of an emitter on the cavity's surface. The further optimized system with enhanced pe…
We describe a chip-scale, telecommunications-band frequency conversion interface designed for low-noise operation at wavelengths desirable for common single photon emitters. Four-wave mixing Bragg scattering in silicon nitride waveguides is used to demonstrate frequency upconversion and downconversion between the 980 nm and 1550 nm wavelength regions, with signal-to-background levels >10 and conversion efficiency of approximately -60 dB at low continuous wave input pump powers (<50 mW). Finite element simulations and the split-step Fourier method indicate that increased input powers of approxi…
Femtosecond laser writing is applied to form Bragg grating waveguides in the diamond bulk. Type II waveguides are integrated with a single pulse point-by-point periodic laser modification positioned towards the edge of the waveguide core. These photonic devices, operating in the telecommunications band, allow for simultaneous optical waveguiding and narrowband reflection from a 4th order grating. This fabrication technology opens the way towards advanced 3D photonic networks in diamond for a range of applications.
A fiber-integrated spectrometer for single-photon pulses outside the telecommunications wavelength range based upon frequency-to-time mapping, implemented by chromatic group delay dispersion (GDD), and precise temporally-resolved single-photon counting, is presented. A chirped fiber Bragg grating provides low-loss GDD, mapping the frequency distribution of an input pulse onto the temporal envelope of the output pulse. Time-resolved detection with fast single-photon-counting modules enables monitoring of a wavelength range from 825 nm to 835 nm with nearly uniform efficiency at 55 pm resolution…
We demonstrate upconversion single-photon detection for the 1550-nm band using a PPLN waveguide, long-wavelength pump, and narrowband filtering using a volume Bragg grating. We achieve total-system detection efficiency of around 30% with noise at the dark-count level of a silicon APD. Based on the new detector, a single-pixel up-conversion infrared spectrometer with a noise equivalent power of -142 dBm was demonstrated, which was better than liquid nitrogen cooled InGaAs arrary.
We analyse inhibition of emission in a 2.5D photonic structures made up a photonic crystal (PhC) and Bragg mirrors using FDTD simulations. A comparison is made between an isolated PhC membrane and the same PhC suspended onto a Bragg mirror or sandwiched between 2 Bragg mirrors. Strong inhibition of the Purcell factor is observed in a broad spectral range, whatever the in-plane orientation and location of the emitting dipole. We analysed these results numerically and theoretically by simulating the experimentally observed lifetime of a collection of randomly distributed emitters, showing that t…
We present here the inscription of single-mode waveguides with Bragg gratings in sapphire. The waveguide Bragg gratings have a novel multi-layer depressed cladding design in the 1550 nm telecommunications waveband. The Bragg gratings have a narrow bandwidth (<0.5 nm) and have survived annealing at 1000°C. The structures are inscribed with femtosecond laser direct writing, using adaptive beam shaping with a non-immersion objective. A single-mode sapphire fiber Bragg grating is created by writing a waveguide with a Bragg grating within a 425 μm diameter sapphire optical fiber, providing signific…

We report on the fabrication and characterization of a scannable Fabry-Perot microcavity, consisting of a curved micromirror at the end of an optical fiber and a planar distributed Bragg reflector. Furthermore, we demonstrate the coupling of single organic molecules embedded in a thin film to well-defined resonator modes. We discuss the choice of cavity parameters that will allow sufficiently high Purcell factors for enhancing the zero-phonon transition between the vibrational ground levels of the electronic excited and ground states.
A method for the agile generation of the optical frequencies required for laser cooling and atom interferometry of rubidium is demonstrated. It relies on fiber Bragg grating technology to filter the output of an electro-optic modulator and was demonstrated in a robust, alignment-free, single-seed, frequency-doubled, telecom fiber laser system. The system was capable of 50 ns frequency switching over a ~40 GHz range, ~0.5 W output power and amplitude modulation with a ~15 ns rise/fall time and an extinction ratio of 120 $\pm$ 2 dB. The technology is ideal for enabling high-bandwidth, mobile ind…
Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs) are among the very few candidates for single-photon sources operating in the telecom bands since they exhibit large photon antibunching up to room temperature. However, coupling a nanotube to a photonic structure is highly challenging because of the random location and emission wavelength in the growth process. Here, we demonstrate the realization of a widely tunable single-photon source by using a carbon nanotube inserted in an original repositionable fiber micro-cavity : we fully characterize the emitter in the free-space and subsequently form the cavity …
Supercontinuum generation is an extensively studied and arguably the most important and all-encompassing nonlinear phenomenon. Yet, we do not have a good control over all the signals generated in this process. Usually a large part of an octave spanning spectrum has orders of magnitude too much weaker signal than the peak to be useful for any application. In this work we show strong signal generation within a supercontinuum using a silicon Bragg grating waveguide. We show up to 23 dB of signal enhancement over a 10 nm full-width-at-half-maximum bandwidth at the Bragg resonance in the telecom wi…
We propose a new class of compact integrated optical circulators providing a large isolation level while maintaining a straightforward technological feasibility. Their layout is based on a nonreciprocal radial Bragg cavity composed of concentric magneto-optical rings. The circulator ports are standard rib waveguides, butt-coupled to the cavity by cutting through its outer rings. The device is specifically designed for operation in a uniform external magnetic field. Using a coupled-mode description of the complete cavity/waveguide-port system, we explore the rich behaviour of cavity circulators…

Quantum frequency conversion (QFC) between the visible and telecom is a key functionality to connect quantum memories over long distances in fiber-based quantum networks. Current QFC methods for linking such widely-separated frequencies, such as sum/difference frequency generation and four-wave mixing Bragg scattering, are prone to broadband noise from the pump laser(s). To address this issue, we propose to use third-order sum/difference frequency generation (TSFG/TDFG) for an upconversion/downconversion QFC interface. In this process, two pump photons combine their energy and momentum to medi…
Low-noise frequency conversion of single photons is a critical tool in establishing fibre-based quantum networks. We show that a single photonic crystal fibre can achieve frequency conversion by Bragg-scattering four-wave mixing of source photons from an ultra-broad wavelength range by engineering a symmetric group velocity profile. Furthermore, we discuss how pump tuning can mitigate realistic discrepancies in device fabrication. This enables a single highly adaptable frequency conversion interface to link disparate nodes in a quantum network via the telecoms band.
In this work we demonstrate a triggered single-photon source operating at the telecom C-band with photon extraction efficiency exceeding any reported values in this range. The non-classical light emission with low probability of the multiphoton events is realized with single InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy and embedded directly in an InP matrix. Low QD spatial density on the order of 5x108 cm-2 to ~2x109 cm-2 and symmetric shape of these nanostructures together with spectral range of emission makes them relevant for quantum communication applications. The engineering of…
