We provide compelling evidence for the presence of quantum chaos in the unitary part of Shor's factoring algorithm. In particular we analyze the spectrum of this part after proper desymmetrization and show that the fluctuations of the eigenangles as well as the distribution of the eigenvector components follow the CUE ensemble of random matrices, of relevance to quantized chaotic systems that violate time-reversal symmetry. However, as the algorithm tracks the evolution of a single state, it is possible to employ other operators, in particular it is possible that the generic quantum chaos found above becomes of a nongeneric kind such as is found in the quantum cat maps, and in toy models of the quantum bakers map.
We have computed numerically the Casimir force between two identical pistons inside a very long cylinder, considering different shapes for the pistons. The pistons can be considered as quantum billiards, whose spectrum determines the vacuum force. The smooth part of the spectrum fixes the force at short distances, and depends only on geometric quantities like the area or perimeter of the piston. However, correcting terms to the force, coming from the oscillating part of the spectrum which is related to the classical dynamics of the billiard, are qualitatively different for classically integrab…

Correspondence in quantum chaotic systems is lost in short time scales. Introducing some noise we study the spectrum of the resulting coarse grained propagaor of density matrices. Some differen methods to compute the spectrum are reviewed. Moreover, the relationship between the eigenvalues of the coarse-grained superoperator and the classical Ruelle-Pollicott resonances is remarked. As a concequence, classical decay rates in quantum time dependent quantities appear.
We present a non-perturbative analysis of the power-spectrum of energy level fluctuations in fully chaotic quantum structures. Focussing on systems with broken time-reversal symmetry, we employ a finite-$N$ random matrix theory to derive an exact multidimensional integral representation of the power-spectrum. The $N\rightarrow \infty$ limit of the exact solution furnishes the main result of this study -- a universal, parameter-free prediction for the power-spectrum expressed in terms of a fifth Painlevé transcendent. Extensive numerics lends further support to our theory which, as discussed at…
The environment of an open quantum system is usually modelled as a large many-body quantum system. However, when an isolated quantum system itself is a many-body quantum system, the question of how large and complex it must be in order to generate internal equilibration is an open key-point in the literature. In this work, by monitoring the degree of equilibration of a single spin through its purity degradation, we are able to sense the chaotic behaviour of the generic spin chain to which it is coupled. Quite remarkably, this holds even in the case of extremely short spin chains composed of th…
Quantum chaotic and integrable systems are known to exhibit a characteristic $1/f$ and $1/f^{2}$ noise, respectively, in the power spectrum associated to their spectral fluctuations. A recent work [R. Riser, V. A. Osipov, and E. Kanzieper, \textit{Power Spectrum of Long Eigenlevel Sequences in Quantum Chaotic Systems}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{118}, 204101 (2017)] calls into question the approximations used to derive these results from random matrix theory. In this paper we show that such approximations do remain valid under almost any circumstances. For the integrable limit, we devise a proto…
We study the phase space of periodically modulated gravitational cavity by means of quantum recurrence phenomena. We report that the quantum recurrences serve as a tool to connect phase space of the driven system with spectrum in quantum domain. With the help of quantum recurrences we investigate the quasi-energy spectrum of the system for a certain fixed modulation strength. In addition, we study transition of spectrum from discrete to continuum as a function of modulation strength.
We discuss a system of a nonlinear Kerr-like oscillator externally pumped by ultra-short, external, coherent pulses. For such a system, we analyse the application of the Kullback-Leibler quantum divergence $K[ρ||σ]$ to the detection of quantum chaotic behaviour. Defining linear and nonlinear quantum divergences, and calculating their power spectra, we show that these parameters are more suitable indicators of quantum chaos than the fidelity commonly discussed in the literature, and are useful for dealing with short time series. Moreover, the nonlinear divergence is more sensitive to chaotic ba…
This is a short review in the theory of chaos in Bohmian Quantum Mechanics based on our series of works in this field. Our first result is the development of a generic theoretical mechanism responsible for the generation of chaos in an arbitrary Bohmian system (in 2 and 3 dimensions). This mechanism allows us to explore the effect of chaos on Bohmian trajectories and study in detail (both analytically and numerically) the different kinds of Bohmian trajectories where, in general, chaos and order coexist. Finally we explore the effect of quantum entanglement on the evolution of the Bohmian traj…
The non-integrability of quantum systems, often associated with chaotic behavior, is a concept typically applied to cases with a high-dimensional Hilbert space Among different indicators signaling this behavior, the study of the long-time oscillations of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) appears as a versatile tool, that can be adapted to the case of systems with a small number of degrees of freedom. Using such an approach, we consider the oscillations observed after the scrambling time in the measurement of OTOCs of local operators for an Ising spin chain on a nuclear magnetic resonan…
The quantum chaos in the finite-temperature Yang-Mills-Higgs system is studied. The energy spectrum of a spatially homogeneous SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs is calculated within thermofield dynamics. Level statistics of the spectra is studied by plotting nearest-level spacing distribution histograms. It is found that finite temperature effects lead to a strengthening of chaotic effects, i.e. spectrum which has Poissonian distribution at zero temperature has Gaussian distribution at finite-temperature.
We prove that any spectral sequence obeying a certain growth law is the quantum spectrum of an equivalence class of classically integrable non-linear oscillators. This implies that exceptions to the Berry-Tabor rule for the distribution of quantum energy gaps of classically integrable systems, are far more numerous than previously believed. In particular we show that for each finite dimension $k$, there are an infinite number of classically integrable $k$-dimensional non-linear oscillators whose quantum spectrum reproduces the imaginary part of zeros on the critical line of the Riemann zeta fu…
We derive universal entanglement entropy and Schmidt eigenvalue behaviors for the eigenstates of two quantum chaotic systems coupled with a weak interaction. The progression from a lack of entanglement in the noninteracting limit to the entanglement expected of fully randomized states in the opposite limit is governed by the single scaling transition parameter, $Λ$. The behaviors apply equally well to few- and many-body systems, e.g.\ interacting particles in quantum dots, spin chains, coupled quantum maps, and Floquet systems as long as their subsystems are quantum chaotic, and not localized …
There exists a Hamiltonian formulation of the factorisation problem which also needs the definition of a factorisation ensemble (a set to which factorable numbers, $N'=x'y'$, having the same trivial factorisation algorithmic complexity, belong). For the primes therein, a function $E$, that may take only discrete values, should be the analogous of the energy from a confined system of charges in a magnetic trap. This is the quantum factoring simulator hypothesis connecting quantum mechanics with number theory. In this work, we report numerical evidence of the existence of this kind of discrete s…
In the spectrum of systems showing chaos-assisted tunneling, three-state crossings are formed when a chaotic singlet intersects a tunnel doublet. We study the dissipative quantum dynamics in the vicinity of such crossings. A harmonically driven double well coupled to a bath serves as a model. Markov and rotating-wave approximations are introduced with respect to the Floquet spectrum of the time-dependent central system. The resulting master equation is integrated numerically. We find various types of transient tunneling, determined by the relation of the level width to the inherent energy scal…
We clarify from a general perspective, the condition for the appearance of chaotic energy spectrum in quantum pseudointegrable billiards with a point scatterer inside.
We identify a set of quantum graphs with unique and precisely defined spectral properties called {\it regular quantum graphs}. Although chaotic in their classical limit with positive topological entropy, regular quantum graphs are explicitly solvable. The proof is constructive: we present exact periodic orbit expansions for individual energy levels, thus obtaining an analytical solution for the spectrum of regular quantum graphs that is complete, explicit and exact.
We numerically investigate the minimum number of interacting particles, which is required for the onset of strong chaos in quantum systems on a one-dimensional lattice with short-range and long-range interactions. We consider multiple system sizes which are at least three times larger than the number of particles and find that robust signatures of quantum chaos emerge for as few as 4 particles in the case of short-range interactions and as few as 3 particles for long-range interactions, and without any apparent dependence on the size of the system.
We shortly review the progress in the domain of deterministic chaos for quantum dynamical systems. With the appropriately extended definition of quantum Lyapunov exponent we analyze various quantum dynamical maps. It is argued that, within Quantum Mechanics, irregular evolution for properly chosen observables can coexist with regular and predictable evolution of states.
We treat the double well quantum oscillator from the standpoint of the Ehrenfest equation but in a manner different from Pattanayak and Schieve. We show that for short times there can be chaotic motion due to quantum fluctuations, but over sufficiently long times the behaviour is normal.
We introduce a simple quantum generalization of the spectrum of classical Lyapunov exponents. We apply it to the SYK and XXZ models, and study the Lyapunov growth and entropy production. Our numerical results suggest that a black hole is not just the fastest scrambler, but also the fastest entropy generator. We also study the statistical features of the quantum Lyapunov spectrum and find universal random matrix behavior, which resembles the recently-found universality in classical chaos. The random matrix behavior is lost when the system is deformed away from chaos, towards integrability or a …
We study the spectral fluctuations of the $^{208}$Pb nucleus using the complete experimental spectrum of 151 states up to excitation energies of $6.20$ MeV recently identified at the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratorium at Garching, Germany. For natural parity states the results are very close to the predictions of Random Matrix Theory (RMT) for the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution. A quantitative estimate of the agreement is given by the Brody parameter $ω$, which takes the value $ω=0$ for regular systems and $ω\simeq 1$ for chaotic systems. We obtain $ω=0.85 \pm 0.02$ which is, to our knowledge,…
This article tackles a fundamental long-standing problem in quantum chaos, namely, whether quantum chaotic systems can exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions, in a form that directly generalizes the notion of classical chaos in phase space. We develop a linear response theory for complexity, and demonstrate that the complexity can exhibit exponential sensitivity in response to perturbations of initial conditions for chaotic systems. Two immediate significant results follows: i) the complexity linear response matrix gives rise to a spectrum that fully recovers the Lyapunov exponents in the c…
