This article tackles a fundamental long-standing problem in quantum chaos, namely, whether quantum chaotic systems can exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions, in a form that directly generalizes the notion of classical chaos in phase space. We develop a linear response theory for complexity, and demonstrate that the complexity can exhibit exponential sensitivity in response to perturbations of initial conditions for chaotic systems. Two immediate significant results follows: i) the complexity linear response matrix gives rise to a spectrum that fully recovers the Lyapunov exponents in the classical limit, and ii) the linear response of complexity is given by the out-of-time order correlators.
Chaos and complexity entail an entropic and computational obstruction to describing a system, and thus are intrinsically difficult to characterize. In this paper, we consider time evolution by Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) Hamiltonians and analytically compute out-of-time-ordered correlation functions (OTOCs) and frame potentials to quantify scrambling, Haar-randomness, and circuit complexity. While our random matrix analysis gives a qualitatively correct prediction of the late-time behavior of chaotic systems, we find unphysical behavior at early times including an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ scrambli…
We propose a measure of quantum state complexity defined by minimizing the spread of the wave-function over all choices of basis. Our measure is controlled by the "survival amplitude" for a state to remain unchanged, and can be efficiently computed in theories with discrete spectra. For continuous Hamiltonian evolution, it generalizes Krylov operator complexity to quantum states. We apply our methods to the harmonic and inverted oscillators, particles on group manifolds, the Schwarzian theory, the SYK model, and random matrix models. For time-evolved thermofield double states in chaotic system…
We investigate circuit complexity to characterize chaos in multiparticle quantum systems. In the process, we take a stride to analyze open quantum systems by using complexity. We propose a new diagnostic of quantum chaos from complexity based on the reduced density matrix by exploring different types of quantum circuits. Through explicit calculations on a toy model of two coupled harmonic oscillators, where one or both of the oscillators are inverted, we demonstrate that the evolution of complexity is a possible diagnostic of chaos.
We apply a notion of quantum complexity, called "Krylov complexity", to study the evolution of systems from integrability to chaos. For this purpose we investigate the integrable XXZ spin chain, enriched with an integrability breaking deformation that allows one to interpolate between integrable and chaotic behavior. K-complexity can act as a probe of the integrable or chaotic nature of the underlying system via its late-time saturation value that is suppressed in the integrable phase and increases as the system is driven to the chaotic phase. We furthermore ascribe the (under-)saturation of t…
This is the contribution to Quarks'2018 conference proceedings. This contribution is devoted to the holographic description of chaos and quantum complexity in the strongly interacting systems out of equilibrium. In the first part of the talk we present different holographic complexity proposals in out-of-equilibrium CFT following the local perturbation. The second part is devoted to the chaotic growth of the local operator size at a finite chemical potential. There are numerous results stating that the chemical potential may lead to the chaos disappearance, and we confirm these results from ho…
We study the relationship between quantum chaos and pseudorandomness by developing probes of unitary design. A natural probe of randomness is the "frame potential," which is minimized by unitary $k$-designs and measures the $2$-norm distance between the Haar random unitary ensemble and another ensemble. A natural probe of quantum chaos is out-of-time-order (OTO) four-point correlation functions. We show that the norm squared of a generalization of out-of-time-order $2k$-point correlators is proportional to the $k$th frame potential, providing a quantitative connection between chaos and pseudor…
We propose a new diagnostic for quantum chaos. We show that time evolution of complexity for a particular type of target state can provide equivalent information about the classical Lyapunov exponent and scrambling time as out-of-time-order correlators. Moreover, for systems that can be switched from a regular to unstable (chaotic) regime by a tuning of the coupling constant of the interaction Hamiltonian, we find that the complexity defines a new time scale. We interpret this time scale as recording when the system makes the transition from regular to chaotic behaviour.
In this paper, we show how the restriction of the Quantum Geometric Tensor to manifolds of states that can be generated through local interactions provides a new tool to understand the consequences of locality in physics. After a review of a first result in this context, consisting in a geometric out-of-equilibrium extension of the quantum phase transitions, we argue the opportunity and the usefulness to exploit the Quantum Geometric Tensor to geometrize quantum chaos and complexity.

We examine the multifold complexity and Loschmidt echo for an inverted harmonic oscillator. We give analytic expressions for any number of precursors, implementing multiple backward and forward time evolutions of the quantum state, at the leading order in the perturbation. We prove that complexity is dominated by the longest permutation of the given time combination in an alternating ``zig-zag'' order, the exact same result obtained with holography. We conjecture that the general structure for multifold complexity should hold true universally for generic quantum systems, in the limit of a larg…
We investigate the time evolution of the complexity of the operator by the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with $N$ Majorana fermions. We follow Nielsen's idea of complexity geometry and geodesics thereof. We show that it is possible that the bi-invariant complexity geometry can exhibit the conjectured time evolution of the complexity in chaotic systems: i) linear growth until $t\sim e^{N}$, ii) saturation and small fluctuations after then. We also show that the Lloyd's bound is realized in this model. Interestingly, these characteristic features appear only if the complexity geometry is the mos…
Recently, the out-of-time-ordered correlator(OTOC) and Krylov complexity have been studied actively as a measure of operator growth. OTOC is known to exhibit exponential growth in chaotic systems, which was confirmed in many previous works. However, in some non-chaotic systems, it was observed that OTOC shows chaotic behavior and cannot distinguish saddle-dominated scrambling from chaotic systems. For K-complexity, in the universal operator growth hypothesis, it was stated that Lanczos coefficients show linear growth in chaotic systems, which is the fastest. But recently, it appeared that Lanc…
We use the SYK family of models with $N$ Majorana fermions to study the complexity of time evolution, formulated as the shortest geodesic length on the unitary group manifold between the identity and the time evolution operator, in free, integrable, and chaotic systems. Initially, the shortest geodesic follows the time evolution trajectory, and hence complexity grows linearly in time. We study how this linear growth is eventually truncated by the appearance and accumulation of conjugate points, which signal the presence of shorter geodesics intersecting the time evolution trajectory. By explic…
Krylov complexity is a novel approach to study how an operator spreads over a specific basis. Recently, it has been stated that this quantity has a long-time saturation that depends on the amount of chaos in the system. Since this quantity not only depends on the Hamiltonian but also on the chosen operator, in this work we study the level of generality of this hypothesis by studying how the saturation value varies in the integrability to chaos transition when different operators are expanded. To do this, we work with an Ising chain with a transverse-longitudinal magnetic field and compare the …
The problem of characterizing complexity of quantum dynamics - in particular of locally interacting chains of quantum particles - will be reviewed and discussed from several different perspectives: (i) stability of motion against external perturbations and decoherence, (ii) efficiency of quantum simulation in terms of classical computation and entanglement production in operator spaces, (iii) quantum transport, relaxation to equilibrium and quantum mixing, and (iv) computation of quantum dynamical entropies. Discussions of all these criteria will be confronted with the established criteria of …
We compute the circuit complexity of scalar curvature perturbations on FLRW cosmological backgrounds with fixed equation of state $w$ using the language of squeezed vacuum states. Backgrounds that are accelerating and expanding, or decelerating and contracting, exhibit features consistent with chaotic behavior, including linearly growing complexity. Remarkably, we uncover a bound on the growth of complexity for both expanding and contracting backgrounds $λ\leq \sqrt{2} \ |H|$, similar to other bounds proposed independently in the literature. The bound is saturated for expanding backgrounds wit…

Achieving full control of the time-evolution of a many-body quantum system is currently a major goal in physics. In this work we investigate the different ways in which the controllability of a quantum system can be influenced by its complexity, or even its chaotic properties. By using optimal control theory, we are able to derive the control fields necessary to drive various physical processes in a spin chain. Then, we study the spectral properties of such fields and how they relate to different aspects of the system complexity. We find that the spectral bandwidth of the fields is, quite gene…
We study aspects of black holes and quantum chaos through the behavior of computational costs, which are distance notions in the manifold of unitaries of the theory. To this end, we enlarge Nielsen geometric approach to quantum computation and provide metrics for finite temperature/energy scenarios and CFT's. From the framework, it is clear that costs can grow in two different ways: operator vs `simple' growths. The first type mixes operators associated to different penalties, while the second does not. Important examples of simple growths are those related to symmetry transformations, and we …
The effect of boundary deformation on the non-separable entanglement which appears in the classical elec- tromagnetic field is considered. A quantum chaotic billiard geometry is used to explore the influence of a mechanical modification of the optical fiber cross-sectional geometry on the production of non-separable entan- glement within classical fields. For the experimental realization of our idea, we propose an optical fiber with a cross section that belongs to the family of Robnik chaotic billiards. Our results show that a modification of the fiber geometry from a regular to a chaotic regi…
Entanglement, chaos, and complexity are as important for de Sitter space as for AdS and for black holes. There are similarities and great differences between AdS and dS in how these concepts are manifested in the space-time geometry. In the first part of this paper the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, the theory of fast scrambling, and the holographic complexity correspondence are reformulated for de Sitter space. Criteria are proposed for a holographic model to describe de Sitter space. The criteria can be summarized by the requirement that scrambling and complexity growth must be "hyperfast." In…

We study the quantum complexity of time evolution in large-$N$ chaotic systems, with the SYK model as our main example. This complexity is expected to increase linearly for exponential time prior to saturating at its maximum value, and is related to the length of minimal geodesics on the manifold of unitary operators that act on Hilbert space. Using the Euler-Arnold formalism, we demonstrate that there is always a geodesic between the identity and the time evolution operator $e^{-iHt}$ whose length grows linearly with time. This geodesic is minimal until there is an obstruction to its minimali…
It has been recently proposed that the naive semiclassical prediction of non-unitary black hole evaporation can be understood in the fundamental description of the black hole as a consequence of ignorance of high-complexity information. Validity of this conjecture implies that any algorithm which is polynomially bounded in computational complexity cannot accurately reconstruct the black hole dynamics. In this work, we prove that such bounded quantum algorithms cannot accurately predict (pseudo)random unitary dynamics, even if they are given access to an arbitrary set of polynomially complex ob…

We calculate survival probability of a special state which couples randomly to a regular or chaotic environment. The environment is modelled by a suitably chosen random matrix ensemble. The exact results exhibit non--perturbative features as revival of probability and non--ergodicity. The role of background complexity and of coupling complexity is discussed as well.
Heisenberg time evolution under a chaotic many-body Hamiltonian $H$ transforms an initially simple operator into an increasingly complex one, as it spreads over Hilbert space. Krylov complexity, or `K-complexity', quantifies this growth with respect to a special basis, generated by $H$ by successive nested commutators with the operator. In this work we study the evolution of K-complexity in finite-entropy systems for time scales greater than the scrambling time $t_s>\log (S)$. We prove rigorous bounds on K-complexity as well as the associated Lanczos sequence and, using refined parallelized al…
We study the connections between three quantities that can be used as diagnostics for quantum chaos, i.e., the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC), Loschmidt echo (LE), and complexity. We generalize the connection between OTOC and LE for infinite dimensions and extend it for higher-order OTOCs and multi-fold LEs. Novel applications of this intrinsic relation are proposed. We also propose a relationship between a specific circuit complexity and LE by using the inverted oscillator model. These relationships signal a deeper connection between these three probes of quantum chaos.
The true dynamical randomness is obtained as a natural fundamental property of deterministic quantum systems. It provides quantum chaos passing to the classical dynamical chaos under the ordinary semiclassical transition, which extends the correspondence principle to chaotic systems. In return one should accept the modified form of quantum formalism (presented by the Schroedinger equation) which, however, does not contradict the ordinary form and the main postulates of quantum mechanics. It introduces the principle of the fundamental dynamic multivaluedness (redundance) extending the quantum p…
The complexity and the chaos degree can be used to examine the chaotic aspects of not only several nonlinear classical and quantum physical physics but also life sciences. We will construct a model describing the function of brain in the context of Quantum Information Dynamics.
We discuss the connection between the out-of-time-ordered correlator and the number of harmonics of the phase-space Wigner distribution function. In particular, we show that both quantities grow exponentially for chaotic dynamics, with a rate determined by the largest Lyapunov exponent of the underlying classical dynamics, and algebraically -- linearly or quadratically -- for integrable dynamics. It is then possible to use such quantities to detect in the time domain the integrability to chaos crossover in many-body quantum systems.
We use multi-time correlation functions of quantum systems to construct random variables with statistical properties that reflect the degree of complexity of the underlying quantum dynamics.

In this work, our prime objective is to study the phenomena of quantum chaos and complexity in the machine learning dynamics of Quantum Neural Network (QNN). A Parameterized Quantum Circuits (PQCs) in the hybrid quantum-classical framework is introduced as a universal function approximator to perform optimization with Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). We employ a statistical and differential geometric approach to study the learning theory of QNN. The evolution of parametrized unitary operators is correlated with the trajectory of parameters in the Diffusion metric. We establish the parametriz…
$Circuit~ Complexity$, a well known computational technique has recently become the backbone of the physics community to probe the chaotic behaviour and random quantum fluctuations of quantum fields. This paper is devoted to the study of out-of-equilibrium aspects and quantum chaos appearing in the universe from the paradigm of two well known bouncing cosmological solutions viz. $Cosine~ hyperbolic$ and $Exponential$ models of scale factors. Besides $circuit~ complexity$, we use the $Out-of-Time~ Ordered~ correlation~ (OTOC)$ functions for probing the random behaviour of the universe both at e…
Quantum complexity, suitably defined, has been suggested as an important probe of late-time dynamics of black holes, particularly in the context of AdS/CFT. A notion of quantum complexity can be effectively captured by quantifying the spread of an operator in Krylov space as a consequence of time evolution. Complexity is expected to behave differently in chaotic many-body systems, as compared to integrable ones. In this paper we investigate Krylov complexity for the case of interacting integrable models at finite size and find that complexity saturation is suppressed as compared to chaotic sys…
We propose a phase-space Wigner harmonics entropy measure for many-body quantum dynamical complexity. This measure, which reduces to the well known measure of complexity in classical systems and which is valid for both pure and mixed states in single-particle and many-body systems, takes into account the combined role of chaos and entanglement in the realm of quantum mechanics. The effectiveness of the measure is illustrated in the example of the Ising chain in a homogeneous tilted magnetic field. We provide numerical evidence that the multipartite entanglement generation leads to a linear inc…
