We compare the performance of various quantum key distribution (QKD) systems using a novel single-photon detector, which combines frequency up-conversion in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide and a silicon avalanche photodiode (APD). The comparison is based on the secure communication rate as a function of distance for three QKD protocols: the Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84), the Bennett, Brassard, and Mermin 1992 (BBM92), and the coherent differential phase shift keying (DPSK). We show that the up-conversion detector allows for higher communication rates and longer communication distances than the commonly used InGaAs/InP APD for all the three QKD protocols.
We present serial-parallel conversion for a heralded single photon source (heralded SPS). We theoretically show that with the heralding signal, the serial-parallel converter can route a stream of n photons to n different spatial modes more efficiently than is the case without using a heralding signal. We also experimentally demonstrate serial-parallel conversion for two photons generated from a heralded SPS. We achieve a conversion efficiency of 0.533 \pm 0.003, which exceeds the maximum achievable efficiency of 0.5 for serial-parallel conversion using unheralded photons, and is double the eff…
We report on quantum frequency conversion of memory-compatible narrow-bandwidth photons at 606 nm to the telecom C-band at 1552$\,$nm. The 200$\,$ns long photons, compatible with Praseodymium-based solid-state quantum memories are frequency converted using a single-step difference frequency generation process in a periodically poled Lithium Niobate waveguide. We characterize the noise processes involved in the conversion and by applying strong spectral filtering of the noise, we demonstrate high signal-to-noise ratio conversion at the single photon level (SNR$\,>\,$100 for a mean input photon …
Microring resonators are attractive for low-power frequency conversion via Bragg-scattering four-wave-mixing due to their comb-like resonance spectrum. However, conversion efficiency is limited to 50% due to the equal probability of up- and down-conversion. Here, we demonstrate how two coupled microrings enable highly directional conversion between the spectral modes of one of the rings. An extinction between up- and down-conversion of more than 40 dB is experimentally observed. Based on this method, we propose a design for on-chip multiplexed single-photon sources that allow localized frequen…
We report on the conversion to telecom wavelength of single photons emitted by a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond. By means of difference frequency generation, we convert spin-selective photons at 637 nm, associated with the coherent NV zero-phonon-line, to the target wavelength of 1588 nm in the L-telecom band. The successful conversion is evidenced by time-resolved detection revealing a telecom photon lifetime identical to that of the original 637 nm photon. Furthermore, we show by second-order correlation measurements that the single-photon statistics are preserved. The overall effic…
We consider six-photon entangled state emitted from a single third-order parametric down-conversion process. In the regime of weak nonlinearities, we present a symmetry detector which is capable of analyzing the twin-beam six-photon symmetric states. By cascading the symmetry detectors, as an application, it is shown that one can purify the desired six-photon entangled state from an arbitrary twin-beam six-photon symmetric state. With linear optics we propose a fruitful scheme for exploring a class of multimode-photon entangled states from third-order parametric down-conversion process. Furthe…
We propose and design a high-brightness, ultra-compact electrically pumped GaSb-based laser source of entangled photons generated by mode-matched intracavity parametric down-conversion of lasing modes. To describe the nonlinear mixing in highly dispersive and dissipative waveguides, we develop a nonperturbative quantum theory of parametric down-conversion of waveguide modes which takes into account the effects of modal dispersion, group and phase mismatch, propagation, dissipation, and coupling to noisy reservoirs. We extend our theory to the regime of quantized pump fields with a new approach…
Heralded single photon sources are the most commonly used sources for optical quantum technology applications. There is strong demand for accurate prediction of their spectral features and temporal correlations with ever increasing precision. This is particularly important in connection with the intrinsically stochastic photon-pair generation process in heralded sources. Here we present a complete theoretical description of the temporal correlation of a signal-idler, signal-signal and signal-signal-idler coincidences of photons generated by continuous wave pumped cavity-enhanced spontaneous pa…
