The notion of entangling power of unitary matrices was introduced by Zanardi, Zalka and Faoro [PRA, 62, 030301]. We study the entangling power of permutations, given in terms of a combinatorial formula. We show that the permutation matrices with zero entangling power are, up to local unitaries, the identity and the swap. We construct the permutations with the minimum nonzero entangling power for every dimension. With the use of orthogonal latin squares, we construct the permutations with the maximum entangling power for every dimension. Moreover, we show that the value obtained is maximum over all unitaries of the same dimension, with possible exception for 36. Our result enables us to construct generic examples of 4-qudits maximally entangled states for all dimensions except for 2 and 6. We numerically classify, according to their entangling power, the permutation matrices of dimension 4 and 9, and we give some estimates for higher dimensions.
We investigate the von Neumann entanglement entropy as function of the size of a subsystem for permutation invariant ground states in models with finite number of states per site, e.g., in quantum spin models. We demonstrate that the entanglement entropy of $n$ sites in a system of length $L$ generically grows as $σ\log_{2}[2πen(L-n)/L]+C$, where $σ$ is the on-site spin and $C$ is a function depending only on magnetization.
It is known that any bipartite unitary operator of Schmidt rank three is equivalent to a controlled unitary under local unitaries. We propose a standard form of such operators. Using the form we improve the upper bound for the entanglement cost to implement such operators under local operations and classical communications (LOCC), and provide a corresponding protocol. A part of our protocol is based on a recursive-control protocol which is helpful for implementing other unitary operators. We show that any bipartite permutation unitary of Schmidt rank three can be implemented using LOCC and two…
Nonlocal unitary operations can create quantum entanglement between distributed particles, and the quantification of created entanglement is a hard problem. It corresponds to the concepts of entangling and assisted entangling power when the input states are, respectively, product and arbitrary pure states. We analytically derive them for Schmidt-rank-two bipartite unitary and some complex bipartite permutation unitaries. In particular, the entangling power of permutation unitary of Schmidt rank three can take only one of two values: $\log_2 9 - 16/9$ or $\log_2 3$ ebits. The entangling power, …
We define the disentangling power of a unitary operator in a similar way as the entangling power defined by Zanardi, Zalka and Faoro [PRA, 62, 030301]. A general formula is derived and it is shown that both quantities are directly proportional. All results concerning the entangling power can simply be translated into similar statements for the disentangling power. In particular, the disentangling power is maximal for certain permutations derived from orthogonal latin squares. These permutations can therefore be interpreted as those that distort entanglement in a maximal way.
We show a simple relation connecting entangling power and local invariants of two-qubit gates. From the relation, a general condition under which gates have same entangling power is arrived. The relation also helps in finding the lower bound of entangling power for perfect entanglers, from which the classification of gates as perfect and nonperfect entanglers is obtained in terms of local invariants.
We establish the entangling power of a unitary operator on a general finite-dimensional bipartite quantum system with and without ancillas, and give relations between the entangling power based on the von Neumann entropy and the entangling power based on the linear entropy. Significantly, we demonstrate that the entangling power of a general controlled unitary operator acting on two equal-dimensional qudits is proportional to the corresponding operator entanglement if linear entropy is adopted as the quantity representing the degree of entanglement. We discuss the entangling power and operator…
The deterministic quantum computing with one qubit (DQC1) is a mixed-state quantum computation algorithm that evaluates the normalized trace of a unitary matrix and is more powerful than the classical counterpart. We find that the normalized trace of the unitary matrix can be directly described by the entangling power of the quantum circuit of the DQC1, so the nontrivial DQC1 is always accompanied with the non-vanishing entangling power. In addition, it is shown that the entangling power also determines the intrinsic complexity of this quantum computation algorithm, i.e., the larger entangling…
Given a quantum gate $U$ acting on a bipartite quantum system, its maximum (average, minimum) entangling power is the maximum (average, minimum) entanglement generation with respect to certain entanglement measure when the inputs are restricted to be product states. In this paper, we mainly focus on the 'weakest' one, i.e., the minimum entangling power, among all these entangling powers. We show that, by choosing von Neumann entropy of reduced density operator or Schmidt rank as entanglement measure, even the 'weakest' entangling power is generically very close to its maximal possible entangle…
We extend the former matrix rearrangement approach of the entangling power to the general cases, without the requirement of the same dimensions of the subsystems. The entangling power of a unitary operator is completely determined by its realignment and partial transposition. As applications, we calculate the entangling power for the Ising interaction and the isotropic Heisenberg interaction in the mixed qudit system.
The quantum baker map possesses two symmetries: a canonical "spatial" symmetry, and a time-reversal symmetry. We show that, even when these features are taken into account, the asymptotic entangling power of the baker's map does not always agree with the predictions of random matrix theory. We have verified that the dimension of the Hilbert space is the crucial parameter which determines whether the entangling properties of the baker are universal or not. For power-of-two dimensions, i.e., qubit systems, an anomalous entangling power is observed; otherwise the behavior of the baker is consiste…
Based on the matrix realignment and partial transpose, we develop an approach to entangling power and operator entanglement of quantum unitary operators. We demonstrate efficiency of the approach by studying several unitary operators on qudits, and indicate that these two matrix rearrangements are not only powerful for studying separability problem of quantum states, but also useful in studying entangling capabilities of quantum operators.
We study the entangling properties of multipartite unitary gates with respect to the measure of entanglement called one-tangle. Putting special emphasis on the case of three parties, we derive an analytical expression for the entangling power of an $n$-partite gate as an explicit function of the gate, linking the entangling power of gates acting on $n$-partite Hilbert space of dimension $d_1 \ldots d_n$ to the entanglement of pure states in the Hilbert space of dimension $(d_1 \ldots d_n)^2$. Furthermore, we evaluate its mean value averaged over the unitary and orthogonal groups, analyze the m…
We present entangling and discording power of a gate that is made on strong contender for the basic element of a quantum computer. We present the effect gate on an experimental scheme of a two-qubit tomography. We propose a sufficient and implementable condition for the existence of nonzero quantum discord and entanglement in the considered experimental scheme.
We investigate the average bipartite entanglement, over all possible divisions of a multipartite system, as a useful measure of multipartite entanglement. We expose a connection between such measures and quantum-error-correcting codes by deriving a formula relating the weight distribution of the code to the average entanglement of encoded states. Multipartite entangling power of quantum evolutions is also investigated.
We consider two capacity quantities associated with bipartite unitary gates: the entangling and the disentangling power. For two-qubit unitaries these two capacities are always the same. Here we prove that these capacities are different in general. We do so by constructing an explicit example of a qubit-qutrit unitary whose entangling power is maximal (2 ebits), but whose disentangling power is strictly less. A corollary is that there can be no unique ordering for unitary gates in terms of their ability to perform non-local tasks. Finally we show that in large dimensions, almost all bipartite …
Our goal is to provide a new approach to the construction of geometry-induced entanglement between a pair of $Λ$ type atoms in a system consists of $N$ identical atoms by means of nonadiabatic quantum holonomies. By employing the quantum Zeno effect, we introduce a tripod type interaction Hamiltonian between two selected atoms trapped in an optical cavity, which allows arbitrary geometric entangling power. This would be a substantial step toward resolving the feasibility of realizing universal nonadiabatic holonomic entangling two-qubit gates.
Quantum gates, that play a fundamental role in quantum computation and other quantum information processes, are unitary evolution operators $\hat U$ that act on a composite system changing its entanglement. In the present contribution we study some aspects of these entanglement changes. By recourse of a Monte Carlo procedure, we compute the so called "entangling power" for several paradigmatic quantum gates and discuss results concerning the action of the CNOT gate. We pay special attention to the distribution of entanglement among the several parties involved.
We analyze the quantum entanglement properties of bosonic particles hopping over graph structures.Mode-entanglement of a graph vertex with respect the rest of the graph is generated, starting from a product state, by turning on for a finite time a tunneling along the graph edges. The maximum achieved during the dynamical evolution by this bi-partite entanglement characterizes the entangling power of a given hopping hamiltonian. We studied this entangling power as a function of the self-interaction parameters i.e., non-linearities, for all the graphs up to four vertices and for two different na…
We analyze the entangling capabilities of unitary transformations $U$ acting on a bipartite $d_1\times d_2$-dimensional quantum system. To this aim we introduce an entangling power measure $e(U)$ given by the mean linear entropy produced acting with $U$ on a given distribution of pure product states. This measure admits a natural interpretation in terms of quantum operations. For a uniform distribution explicit analytical results are obtained using group-theoretic arguments. The behaviour of the features of $e(U)$ as the subsystem dimensions $d_1$ and $d_2$ are varied is studied both analytica…
We investigate the entangling capability of passive optical elements, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We present a general necessary and sufficient condition for the possibility of creating distillable entanglement in an arbitrary multi-mode Gaussian state with the help of passive optical elements, thereby establishing a general connection between squeezing and the entanglement that is attainable by non-squeezing operations. Special attention is devoted to general two-mode Gaussian states, for which we provide the optimal entangling procedure, present an explicit formula for the attaina…
We compare three different characterizations of the globalness of bipartite unitary operations, namely, delocalization power, entanglement cost, and entangling power, to investigate global properties of unitary operations. We show that the globalness of the same unitary operation depends on whether input states are given by unknown states representing pieces of quantum information, or a set of known states for the characterization. We extend our analysis on the delocalization power in two ways. First, we show that the delocalization power differs whether the global operation is applied on one …
The space of quantum Hamiltonians has a natural partition in classes of operators that can be adiabatically deformed into each other. We consider parametric families of Hamiltonians acting on a bi-partite quantum state-space. When the different Hamiltonians in the family fall in the same adiabatic class one can manipulate entanglement by moving through energy eigenstates corresponding to different value of the control parameters. We introduce an associated notion of adiabatic entangling power. This novel measure is analyzed for general $d\times d$ quantum systems and specific two-qubits exampl…
We study the entangling power and perfect entangler nature of (SWAP)1/m, for m>=1, and controlled unitary (CU) gates. It is shown that (SWAP)1/2 is the only perfect entangler in the family. On the other hand, a subset of CU which is locally equivalent to CNOT is identified. It is shown that the subset, which is a perfect entangler, must necessarily possess the maximum entangling power.

We investigate entanglement properties of a recently introduced class of macroscopic quantum superpositions in two-mode mixed states. One of the tools we use in order to infer the entanglement in this non-Gaussian class of states is the power to entangle a qubit system. Our study reveals features which are hidden in a standard approach to entanglement investigation based on the uncertainty principle of the quadrature variables. We briefly describe the experimental setup corresponding to our theoretical scenario and a suitable modification of the protocol which makes our proposal realizable wit…
We consider a model of two qubits dissipating into both local and global environments (generally at non-zero temperatures), with the possibility of interpolating between purely local dissipation and purely global one. The corresponding dissipative dynamical map is characterized in terms of its Kraus operators focusing on the stationary regime. We then determine conditions under which entanglement can be induced by the action of such a map. It results (rather counterintuitively) that in order to have entanglement in the presence of local environment, this latter must be at nonzero temperature.
The ability to reach a maximally entangled state from a separable one through the use of a two-qubit unitary operator is analyzed for mixed states. This extension from the known case of pure states shows that there are at least two families of gates which are able to give maximum entangling power for all values of purity. It is notable that one of this gates coincides with a maximum discording one. We give analytical proof that such gate is indeed perfect entangler at all purities and give numerical evidence for the existence of the second one. Further, we find that there are other gates, many…
The capacity of a quantum gate to produce entangled states on a bipartite system is quantified in terms of the entangling power. This quantity is defined as the average of the linear entropy of entanglement of the states produced after applying a quantum gate over the whole set of separable states. Here we focus on symmetric two-qubit quantum gates, acting on the symmetric two-qubit space, and calculate the entangling power in terms of the appropriate local-invariant. A geometric description of the local equivalence classes of gates is given in terms of the $\mathfrak{su}(3)$ Lie algebra root …
The entangling power of a bipartite unitary operation shows the maximum created entanglement with the product input states. For an arbitrary two-qubit unitary operation, it is sufficient to consider its normalized operation $U$ with parameters $c_0,c_1,c_2$ and $c_3$. We show how to compute the entangling power of $U$ when $c_2=c_3$. In particular we construct the analytical expressions of entangling power of such $U$ for two examples. We also construct the entangling power of bipartite unitary operations of Schmidt rank two for any dimensions.
We present a random-matrix analysis of the entangling power of a unitary operator as a function of the number of times it is iterated. We consider unitaries belonging to the circular ensembles of random matrices (CUE or COE) applied to random (real or complex) non-entangled states. We verify numerically that the average entangling power is a monotonic decreasing function of time. The same behavior is observed for the "operator entanglement" --an alternative measure of the entangling strength of a unitary. On the analytical side we calculate the CUE operator entanglement and asymptotic values f…
To achieve scalable quantum computing, improving entangling-gate fidelity and its implementation-efficiency are of utmost importance. We present here a linear method to construct provably power-optimal entangling gates on an arbitrary pair of qubits on a trapped-ion quantum computer. This method leverages simultaneous modulation of amplitude, frequency, and phase of the beams that illuminate the ions and, unlike the state of the art, does not require any search in the parameter space. The linear method is extensible, enabling stabilization against external parameter fluctuations to an arbitrar…
We derive a bound on the ability of a linear optical network to estimate a linear combination of independent phase shifts by using an arbitrary non-classical but unentangled input state, thereby elucidating the quantum resources required to obtain the Heisenberg limit with a multi-port interferometer. Our bound reveals that while linear networks can generate highly entangled states, they cannot effectively combine quantum resources that are well distributed across multiple modes for the purposes of metrology: in this sense linear networks endowed with well-distributed quantum resources behave …
We explore the dynamics of entanglement in classically chaotic systems by considering a multiqubit system that behaves collectively as a spin system obeying the dynamics of the quantum kicked top. In the classical limit, the kicked top exhibits both regular and chaotic dynamics depending on the strength of the chaoticity parameter $κ$ in the Hamiltonian. We show that the entanglement of the multiqubit system, considered for both bipartite and pairwise entanglement, yields a signature of quantum chaos. Whereas bipartite entanglement is enhanced in the chaotic region, pairwise entanglement is su…
We study operator entanglement of the quantum chaotic evolutions. This study shows that properties of the operator entanglement production are qualitatively similar to the properties reported in literature about the pure state entanglement production. This similarity establishes that the operator entanglement quantifies {\it intrinsic} entangling power of an operator. The term `intrinsic' suggests that this measure is independent of any specific choice of initial states.
It is demonstrated here that local dynamics have the ability to strongly modify the entangling power of unitary quantum gates acting on a composite system. The scenario is common to numerous physical systems, in which the time evolution involves local operators and nonlocal interactions. To distinguish between distinct classes of gates with zero entangling power we introduce a complementary quantity called gate-typicality and study its properties. Analyzing multiple applications of any entangling operator interlaced with random local gates, we prove that both investigated quantities approach t…
We show that entanglement can be used to detect spacetime curvature. Quantum fields in the Minkowski vacuum are entangled with respect to local field modes. This entanglement can be swapped to spatially separated quantum systems using standard local couplings. A single, inertial field detector in the exponentially expanding (de Sitter) vacuum responds as if it were bathed in thermal radiation in a Minkowski universe. We show that using two inertial detectors, interactions with the field in the thermal case will entangle certain detector pairs that would not become entangled in the correspondin…
The conventional approach to perform two-qubit gate operations in trapped ions relies on exciting the ions on motional sidebands with laser light, which is an inherently slow process. One way to implement a fast entangling gate protocol requires a suitable pulsed laser to increase the gate speed by orders of magnitude. However, the realization of such a fast entangling gate operation presents a big technical challenge, as such the required laser source is not available off-the-shelf. For this, we have engineered an ultrafast entangling gate source based on a frequency comb. The source generate…
For a generic $n$-qubit system, local invariants under the action of $SL(2,\mathbb{C})^{\otimes n}$ characterize non-local properties of entanglement. In general, such properties are not immediately apparent and hard to construct. Here we consider certain two-qubit Yang-Baxter operators, which we dub of the `X-type', and show that their eigenvalues completely determine the non-local properties of the system. Moreover, we apply the Turaev procedure to these operators and obtain their associated link/knot polynomials. We also compute their entangling power and compare it with that of a generic t…
We investigate entanglement production in a class of quantum baker's maps. The dynamics of these maps is constructed using strings of qubits, providing a natural tensor-product structure for application of various entanglement measures. We find that, in general, the quantum baker's maps are good at generating entanglement, producing multipartite entanglement amongst the qubits close to that expected in random states. We investigate the evolution of several entanglement measures: the subsystem linear entropy, the concurrence to characterize entanglement between pairs of qubits, and two proposal…
Notions of circuit complexity and cost play a key role in quantum computing and simulation where they capture the (weighted) minimal number of gates that is required to implement a unitary. Similar notions also become increasingly prominent in high energy physics in the study of holography. While notions of entanglement have in general little implications for the quantum circuit complexity and the cost of a unitary, in this note, we discuss a simple such relationship when both the entanglement of a state and the cost of a unitary take small values, building on ideas on how values of entangling…
