The space of quantum Hamiltonians has a natural partition in classes of operators that can be adiabatically deformed into each other. We consider parametric families of Hamiltonians acting on a bi-partite quantum state-space. When the different Hamiltonians in the family fall in the same adiabatic class one can manipulate entanglement by moving through energy eigenstates corresponding to different value of the control parameters. We introduce an associated notion of adiabatic entangling power. This novel measure is analyzed for general $d\times d$ quantum systems and specific two-qubits examples are studied
A scheme is presented to perform an entangling gate between two atomic ensembles or Bose-Einstein condensates in a optical cavity with a common optical mode. The method involves using a generalized Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) to adiabatically evolve the ground state. We show that dark states exist for any atom number within the cavities, and find that the operation produces an unusual type of evolution where the minimum of the number of atoms between two levels transitions to another state. This produces a unconventional type of entangling Hamiltonian which creates a phase depe…
It is shown that optical pulses with a mean position accuracy beyond the standard quantum limit can be produced by adiabatically expanding an optical vector soliton followed by classical dispersion management. The proposed scheme is also capable of entangling positions of optical pulses and can potentially be used for general continuous-variable quantum information processing.
A fundamental requirement in the circuit model of quantum information processing is the realization of fault-tolerant multi-qubit quantum gates with entangling capabilities. A key step towards this end is to achieve control of qubit states through geometric phases at very small spatial scales in an effective and feasible way. A spin-electric coupling present in antiferromagnetic triangular single-molecule magnets (SMMs) allows for manipulation of the spin (qubit) states with a great flexibility. Here, we establish an all-electrical two-qubit geometric phase shift gate acting on the four-fold g…
The circuit model of a quantum computer consists of sequences of gate operations between quantum bits (qubits), drawn from a universal family of discrete operations. The ability to execute parallel entangling quantum gates offers clear efficiency gains in numerous quantum circuits as well as for entire algorithms such as Shor's factoring algorithm and quantum simulations. In cases such as full adders and multiple-control Toffoli gates, parallelism can provide an exponential improvement in overall execution time. More importantly, quantum gate parallelism is essential for the practical fault-to…
Parameterized quantum circuits play an essential role in the performance of many variational hybrid quantum-classical (HQC) algorithms. One challenge in implementing such algorithms is to choose an effective circuit that well represents the solution space while maintaining a low circuit depth and number of parameters. To characterize and identify expressible, yet compact, parameterized circuits, we propose several descriptors, including measures of expressibility and entangling capability, that can be statistically estimated from classical simulations of parameterized quantum circuits. We comp…
Adiabatic pulses are used extensively to enable robust control of quantum operations. We introduce a new approach to adiabatic control that uses the superadiabatic quality or $Q$-factor as a performance metric to design robust, high fidelity pulses. This approach permits the systematic design of quantum control schemes to maximize the adiabaticity of a unitary operation in a particular time interval given the available control resources. The interplay between adiabaticity, fidelity and robustness of the resulting pulses is examined for the case of single-qubit inversion, and superadiabatic pul…
Symmetry-protected trivial (SPt) phases of matter are the product-state analogue of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. This means, SPt phases can be adiabatically connected to a product state by some path that preserves the protecting symmetry. Moreover, SPt and SPT phases can be adiabatically connected to each other when interaction terms that break the symmetries protecting the SPT order are added in the Hamiltonian. It is also known that spin-1 SPT phases in quantum spin chains can emerge as effective intermediate phases of spin-2 Hamiltonians. In this paper we show that a similar…
Quantum communication relies on the efficient generation of entanglement between remote quantum nodes, due to entanglement's key role in achieving and verifying secure communications. Remote entanglement has been realized using a number of different probabilistic schemes, but deterministic remote entanglement has only recently been demonstrated, using a variety of superconducting circuit approaches. However, the deterministic violation of a Bell inequality, a strong measure of quantum correlation, has not to date been demonstrated in a superconducting quantum communication architecture, in par…
Universal quantum computing relies on high-fidelity entangling operations. Here we demonstrate that four coupled qubits can operate as a quantum gate, where two qubits control the operation on two target qubits (a four-qubit gate). This configuration can implement four different controlled two-qubit gates: two different entangling swap and phase operations, a phase operation distinguishing states of different parity, and the identity operation (idle quantum gate), where the choice of gate is set by the state of the control qubits. The device exploits quantum interference to control the operati…
The physics of interacting integer-spin chains has been a topic of intense theoretical interest, particularly in the context of symmetry-protected topological phases. However, there has not been a controllable model system to study this physics experimentally. We demonstrate how spin-dependent forces on trapped ions can be used to engineer an effective system of interacting spin-1 particles. Our system evolves coherently under an applied spin-1 XY Hamiltonian with tunable, long-range couplings, and all three quantum levels at each site participate in the dynamics. We observe the time evolution…
This paper presents an alternative approach to geometric phases from the observable point of view. Precisely, we introduce the notion of observable-geometric phases, which is defined as a sequence of phases associated with a complete set of eigenstates of the observable. The observable-geometric phases are shown to be connected with the quantum geometry of the observable space evolving according to the Heisenberg equation. They are indeed distinct from Berry's phase \cite{Berry1984, Simon1983} as the system evolves adiabatically. It is shown that the observable-geometric phases can be used to …
We consider a network whose nodes are electromagnetic cavities, each coupled to a single three-level atom. The nodes are connected by optical fibers. Each atom is addressed by a control laser, which along with the cavity field drives atomic transitions. The network can be in the form of chain or two and three dimensional arrays of $N$-cavities connected by $N_B$ fibers. Following the work on two-cavity system by Pellizzari, we find that under certain conditions, the system possesses two kinds of dark states. The first kind are $N$ states corresponding to atomic excitations at each node and the…
We analyze the eigenvalue problem of a quantum particle on the line with the generalized pointlike potential of three parameter family. It is shown that the energy surface in the parameter space has a set of singularities, around which different eigenstates are connected in the form of paired spiral stairway. An examplar wave-function aholonomy is displayed where the ground state is adiabatically turned into the second excited state after cyclic rotation in the parameter space. KEYWORDS: one-dimensional system, $δ'$ potential, non-trivial topology in quantum mechanics, exotic wave-function aho…
One of the goals in quantum simulation is to adiabatically generate the ground state of a complicated Hamiltonian by starting with the ground state of a simple Hamiltonian and slowly evolving the system to the complicated one. If the evolution is adiabatic and the initial and final ground states are connected due to having the same symmetry, then the simulation will be successful. But in most experiments, adiabatic simulation is not possible because it would take too long, and the system has some level of diabatic excitation. In this work, we quantify the extent of the diabatic excitation even…
