Notions of circuit complexity and cost play a key role in quantum computing and simulation where they capture the (weighted) minimal number of gates that is required to implement a unitary. Similar notions also become increasingly prominent in high energy physics in the study of holography. While notions of entanglement have in general little implications for the quantum circuit complexity and the cost of a unitary, in this note, we discuss a simple such relationship when both the entanglement of a state and the cost of a unitary take small values, building on ideas on how values of entangling power of quantum gates add up. This bound implies that if entanglement entropies grow linearly in time, so does the cost. The implications are two-fold: It provides insights into complexity growth for short times. In the context of quantum simulation, it allows to compare digital and analog quantum simulators. The main technical contribution is a continuous-variable small incremental entangling bound.
We present a fast quantum entangling operation on superconducting qubits assisted by a resonator in the quasi-dispersive regime with a new effect --- the selective resonance coming from the amplified qubit-state-dependent resonator transition frequency and the tunable period relation between a wanted quantum Rabi oscillation and an unwanted one. This operation does not require any kind of drive fields and the interaction between qubits. More interesting, the non-computational third excitation states of the charge qubits can play an important role in shortening largely the operation time of the…
We investigate a hybrid quantum system consisting of spatially separated resonant exchange qubits, defined in three-electron semiconductor triple quantum dots, that are coupled via a superconducting transmission line resonator. Drawing on methods from circuit quantum electrodynamics and Hartmann-Hahn double resonance techniques, we analyze three specific approaches for implementing resonator-mediated two-qubit entangling gates in both dispersive and resonant regimes of interaction. We calculate entangling gate fidelities as well as the rate of relaxation via phonons for resonant exchange qubit…
Parameterized quantum circuits play an essential role in the performance of many variational hybrid quantum-classical (HQC) algorithms. One challenge in implementing such algorithms is to choose an effective circuit that well represents the solution space while maintaining a low circuit depth and number of parameters. To characterize and identify expressible, yet compact, parameterized circuits, we propose several descriptors, including measures of expressibility and entangling capability, that can be statistically estimated from classical simulations of parameterized quantum circuits. We comp…
In this paper we study the ways to use a global entangling operator to efficiently implement circuitry common to a selection of important quantum algorithms. In particular, we focus on the circuits composed with global Ising entangling gates and arbitrary addressable single-qubit gates. We show that under certain circumstances the use of global operations can substantially improve the entangling gate count.
Deterministic classical dynamical systems have an ergodic hierarchy, from ergodic through mixing, to Bernoulli systems that are "as random as a coin-toss". Dual-unitary circuits have been recently introduced as solvable models of many-body nonintegrable quantum chaotic systems having a hierarchy of ergodic properties. We extend this to include the apex of a putative quantum ergodic hierarchy which is Bernoulli, in the sense that correlations of single and two-particle observables vanish at space-time separated points. We derive a condition based on the entangling power $e_p(U)$ of the basic tw…
We investigate the continuous-time dynamics of highly-entangling intermediate-scale quantum circuits in the presence of dissipation and decoherence. By compressing the Hilbert space to a time-dependent "corner" subspace that supports faithful representations of the density matrix, we simulate a noisy quantum Fourier transform processor with up to 21 qubits. Our method is efficient to compute with a controllable accuracy the time evolution of intermediate-scale open quantum systems with moderate entropy, while taking into account microscopic dissipative processes rather than relying on digital …
We analyze a high-fidelity two-qubit gate using fast flux pulses on superconducting fluxonium qubits. The gate is realized by temporarily detuning magnetic flux through fluxonium loop away from the half flux quantum sweet spot. We simulate dynamics of two capacitively coupled fluxoniums during the flux pulses and optimize the pulse parameters to obtain a highly accurate $\sqrt{i\mathrm{swap}}$-like entangling gate. We also evaluate the effect of the flux noise and qubit relaxation on the gate fidelity. Our results demonstrate that the gate error remains below $10^{-4}$ for currently achievable…
An active area of investigation in the search for quantum advantage is Quantum Machine Learning. Quantum Machine Learning, and Parameterized Quantum Circuits in a hybrid quantum-classical setup in particular, could bring advancements in accuracy by utilizing the high dimensionality of the Hilbert space as feature space. But is the ability of a quantum circuit to uniformly address the Hilbert space a good indicator of classification accuracy? In our work, we use methods and quantifications from prior art to perform a numerical study in order to evaluate the level of correlation. We find a stron…
Producing and maintaining entanglement reside at the heart of the optimal construction of quan- tum operations and are fundamental issues in the realization of universal quantum computation. We here introduce a setup of spin qubits that allows for geometric implementation of entangling gates between the register qubits with any arbitrary entangling power. We show this by demon- strating a circuit through a spin chain, which performs universal nonadiabatic holonomic two-qubit entanglers. The proposed gates are all electric and geometric, which would help to realize fast and robust entangling ga…
We present improved circuits for the control-control-phase (Toffoli) gate and the control-swap (Fredkin) gate using three and four global two-qubit gates, respectively. This is a nearly double speed-up compared to the conventional circuits, which require five (for Toffoli) and seven (for Fredkin) conditional two-qubit gates. We apply the same approach to construct the conditional four-qubit phase gate by seven global two-qubit gates. We also present construction of the Toffoli and the Fredkin gates with five nearest-neighbour interactions. Our constructions do not employ ancilla qubits or anci…
We investigate how the dynamical Casimir effect can entangle quantum systems in different coupling regimes of circuit quantum electrodynamics, and show the robustness of such entanglement generation against dissipative effects with current technology. We consider two qubit-resonator systems, which are coupled by a SQUID driven with an external magnetic field, and explore the entire range of coupling regimes between each qubit and its respective resonator. In this scheme, we derive a semianalytic explanation for the entanglement generation between both superconducting qubits when they are coupl…
We introduce a method to speed up adiabatic protocols for creating entanglement between two qubits dispersively coupled to a transmission line, while keeping fidelities high and maintaining robustness to control errors. The method takes genuinely adiabatic sweeps, ranging from a simple Landau-Zener drive to boundary cancellation methods and local adiabatic drivings, and adds fast oscillations to speed up the protocol while canceling unwanted transitions. We compare our protocol with existing adiabatic methods in a state-of-the-art parameter range and show substantial gains. Numerical simulatio…
Controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates are commonly included in the standard gate set of quantum processors and provide an important way to entangle qubits. For fixed-frequency qubits using the cross-resonance entangling technique, using the higher-frequency qubit to control the lower-frequency qubit enables much shorter entangling times than using the lower-frequency qubit as the control. Consequently, when implementing a CNOT gate where logical control by the lower-frequency qubit is needed, compilers may implement this functionality by using an equivalent circuit such as placing Hadamard gates on both…
We analyse the design and optimisation of quantum logic circuits suitable for the experimental demonstration of a three-qubit quantum computation prototype based on optically-controlled, solid-state quantum logic gates. In these gates, the interaction between two qubits carried by the electron-spin of donors is mediated by the optical excitation of a control particle placed in their proximity. First, we use a geometrical approach for analysing the entangling characteristics of these quantum gates. Then, using a genetic programming algorithm, we develop circuits for the refined Deutsch-Jozsa al…
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are one of the most widely adopted semisupervised and unsupervised machine learning methods for high-definition image, video, and audio generation. In this work, we propose a new type of architecture for quantum generative adversarial networks (entangling quantum GAN, EQ-GAN) that overcomes some limitations of previously proposed quantum GANs. Leveraging the entangling power of quantum circuits, EQ-GAN guarantees the convergence to a Nash equilibrium under minimax optimization of the discriminator and generator circuits by performing entangling operations…
The circuit model of a quantum computer consists of sequences of gate operations between quantum bits (qubits), drawn from a universal family of discrete operations. The ability to execute parallel entangling quantum gates offers clear efficiency gains in numerous quantum circuits as well as for entire algorithms such as Shor's factoring algorithm and quantum simulations. In cases such as full adders and multiple-control Toffoli gates, parallelism can provide an exponential improvement in overall execution time. More importantly, quantum gate parallelism is essential for the practical fault-to…
We describe conditions for generating entanglement between two regions at the optimal rate in a class of one-dimensional quantum circuits with Floquet dynamics. The optimal value follows from subadditivity and Araki-Lieb inequalities. A quantum circuit composed of parallel SWAP gates that act periodically on entangled pairs is a simple system that saturates the bound. We show that any other system that entangles at this maximal rate must act as a generalized SWAP gate dynamics on the relevant states of the Hilbert space. We further discuss some characterizations of states according to entropy …
Universal quantum entangling gates are a crucial building block in the large-scale quantum computation and quantum communication, and it is an important task to find simple ways to implement them. Here an effective quantum circuit for the implementation of a controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate is constructed by introducing a non-computational quantum state in the auxiliary space. Furthermore, the method is extended to the construction of a general n-control-qubit Toffoli gate with (2n-1) qubit-qudit gates and (2n-2) single-qudit gates. Based on the presented quantum circuits, the polarization CNOT and …

The ultimate goal in machine learning is to construct a model function that has a generalization capability for unseen dataset, based on given training dataset. If the model function has too much expressibility power, then it may overfit to the training data and as a result lose the generalization capability. To avoid such overfitting issue, several techniques have been developed in the classical machine learning regime, and the dropout is one such effective method. This paper proposes a straightforward analogue of this technique in the quantum machine learning regime, the entangling dropout, …
With the advent of hybrid quantum classical algorithms using parameterized quantum circuits the question of how to optimize these algorithms and circuits emerges. In this paper we show that the number of single-qubit rotations in parameterized quantum circuits can be decreased without compromising the relative expressibility or entangling capability of the circuit. We also show that the performance of a variational quantum eigensolver is unaffected by a similar decrease in single-qubit rotations. We compare relative expressibility and entangling capability across different number of qubits in …
We provide an analytic way to implement any arbitrary two-qubit unitary operation, given an entangling two-qubit gate together with local gates. This is shown to provide explicit construction of a universal quantum circuit that exactly simulates arbitrary two-qubit operations in SU(4). Each block in this circuit is given in a closed form solution. We also provide a uniform upper bound of the applications of the given entangling gates, and find that exactly half of all the Controlled-Unitary gates satisfy the same upper bound as the CNOT gate. These results allow for the efficient implementatio…
The realization of robust universal quantum computation with any platform ultimately requires both the coherent storage of quantum information and (at least) one entangling operation between individual elements. The use of continuous-variable bosonic modes as the quantum element is a promising route to preserve the coherence of quantum information against naturally-occurring errors. However, operations between bosonic modes can be challenging. In analogy to the exchange interaction between discrete-variable spin systems, the exponential-SWAP unitary [$\mathbf{U}_{\mathrm{E}}\left(θ_c\right)$] …
The faster speed and operational convenience of two-qubit gate with flux bias control makes it an important candidate for future large-scale quantum computers based on high coherence flux qubits. Based on a properly designed two-spin gadget which has small gaps during the evolution of energy levels, we build a CNOT-equivalent gate which can reach a fidelity larger than 99.9% within 40ns. Moreover, we also use the Schrieffer-Wolff Transformation to translate the spin model Ising coefficients schedule to circuit model flux bias schedule for realistic flux qubit circuits coupled by a tunable rf-s…
The deterministic quantum computing with one qubit (DQC1) is a mixed-state quantum computation algorithm that evaluates the normalized trace of a unitary matrix and is more powerful than the classical counterpart. We find that the normalized trace of the unitary matrix can be directly described by the entangling power of the quantum circuit of the DQC1, so the nontrivial DQC1 is always accompanied with the non-vanishing entangling power. In addition, it is shown that the entangling power also determines the intrinsic complexity of this quantum computation algorithm, i.e., the larger entangling…
We consider quantum circuits composed of single-qubit operations and global entangling gates generated by Ising-type Hamiltonians. It is shown that such circuits can implement a large class of unitary operators commonly used in quantum algorithms at a very low cost -- using a constant or effectively constant number of global entangling gates. Specifically, we report constant-cost implementations of Clifford operations with and without ancillae, constant-cost implementation of the multiply controlled gates with linearly many ancillae, and an $O(\log^*(n))$ cost implementation of the $n$-control…
We in theory proposed a hybrid system consisting of a mechanical resonator, an optical Fabry-Pérot cavity, and two superconducting microwave circuits to generate stationary continuous-variable quantum entanglement between two microwave modes. We show that the hybrid system can also achieve quantum entanglement of other bipartite subsystems in experimentally accessible parameter regimes, which has the potential to be useful in quantum information processing and quantum illumination radar.
The power of a quantum circuit is determined through the number of two-qubit entangling gates that can be performed within the coherence time of the system. In the absence of parallel quantum gate operations, this would make the quantum simulators limited to shallow circuits. Here, we propose a protocol to parallelize the implementation of two-qubit entangling gates between multiple users which are spatially separated, and use a commonly shared spin chain data-bus. Our protocol works through inducing effective interaction between each pair of qubits without disturbing the others, therefore, it…
A time-bin qubit is a promising candidate qubit for advanced quantum information processing systems operating over optical fibers or integrated quantum photonic circuits. However, the single- and two-qubit operations of time-bin qubits have been largely unexplored compared with those of polarization qubits. Here, I present a simple scheme for implementing a basic two-qubit operation, namely an "entangling" operation of two independent time-bin qubits, based on Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum interference in a high-speed 2x2 optical switch. With the proposed scheme, the formation of a time-bin entanglem…
We present a multilayer surface-electrode ion trap with embedded 3D microwave circuitry for implementing entangling quantum logic gates. We discuss the electromagnetic full-wave simulation procedure that has led to the trap design and the characterization of the resulting microwave field-pattern using a single ion as a local field probe. The results agree with simulations within the uncertainty; compared to previous traps, this design reduces detrimental AC Zeeman shifts by three orders of magnitude. The design presented here can be viewed as an entangling gate component in a library for surfa…
Superconducting microwave circuits with Josephson junctions are a major platform for quantum computing. To unleash their full capabilities, the cooperative operation of multiple microwave superconducting circuits is required. Therefore, designing an efficient protocol to distribute microwave entanglement remotely becomes a crucial open problem. Here, we propose a continuous-variable entanglement-swap approach based on optical-microwave entanglement generation, which can boost the ultimate rate by two orders of magnitude at state-of-the-art parameter region, compared with traditional approaches…
In the microscopic world, multipartite entanglement has been achieved with various types of nanometer sized two-level systems such as trapped ions, atoms and photons. On the macroscopic scale ranging from micrometers to millimeters, recent experiments have demonstrated bipartite and tripartite entanglement for electronic quantum circuits with superconducting Josephson junctions. It remains challenging to bridge these largely different length scales by constructing hybrid quantum systems. Doing this may allow for manipulating the entanglement of individual microscopic objects separated by macro…
Bosonic quantum error correction has proven to be a successful approach for extending the coherence of quantum memories, but to execute deep quantum circuits, high-fidelity gates between encoded qubits are needed. To that end, we present a family of error-detectable two-qubit gates for a variety of bosonic encodings. From a new geometric framework based on a "Bloch sphere" of bosonic operators, we construct $ZZ_L(θ)$ and $\text{eSWAP}(θ)$ gates for the binomial, 4-legged cat, dual-rail and several other bosonic codes. The gate Hamiltonian is simple to engineer, requiring only a programmable be…
We develop schemes for designing pulses that implement fast and precise entangling quantum gates in superconducting qubit systems despite the presence of nearby harmful transitions. Our approach is based on purposely involving the nearest harmful transition in the quantum evolution instead of trying to avoid it. Using analytical tools, we design simple microwave control fields that implement maximally entangling gates with fidelities exceeding 99% in times as low as 40 ns. We demonstrate our approach in a two-qubit circuit QED system by designing the two most important quantum entangling gates…
Motivated by recent studies of quantum computational complexity in quantum field theory and holography, we discuss how weighting certain classes of gates building up a quantum circuit more heavily than others does affect the complexity. Utilizing Nielsen's geometric approach to circuit complexity, we investigate the effects for a regulated field theory for which the optimal circuit is a representation of $GL(N,\mathbb{R})$. More precisely, we work out how a uniformly chosen weighting factor acting on the entangling gates affects the complexity and, particularly, its divergent behavior. We show…
We theoretically investigate the generation of heralded entanglement between two identical atoms via cavity-assisted photon scattering in two different configurations, namely either both atoms confined in the same cavity or trapped into locally separated ones. Our protocols are given by a very simple and elegant single-step process, whose key mechanism is a controlled-phase-flip gate implemented by impinging a single photon on single-sided cavities. In particular, when the atoms are localized in remote cavities, we introduce a single-step parallel quantum circuit instead of the serial process …
We study the effects of entanglement and control parameters on the energy landscape and optimization performance of the variational quantum circuit. Through a systematic analysis of the Hessian spectrum, we characterize the local geometry of the energy landscape at a random point and along an optimization trajectory. We argue that decreasing the entangling capability and increasing the number of circuit parameters have the same qualitative effect on the Hessian eigenspectrum. Both the low-entangling capability and the abundance of control parameters increase the curvature of non-flat direction…
