We examine the physical significance of fidelity as a measure of similarity for Gaussian states, by drawing a comparison with its classical counterpart. We find that the relationship between these classical and quantum fidelities is not straightforward, and in general does not seem to provide insight into the physical significance of quantum fidelity. To avoid this ambiguity we propose that the efficacy of quantum information protocols be characterized by determining their transfer function and then calculating the fidelity achievable for a hypothetical pure reference input state.
We introduce a family of quantum Rényi fidelities and discuss their symmetry resolution. We express the symmetry-resolved fidelities as Fourier transforms of charged fidelities, for which we derive exact formulas for Gaussian states. These results also yield a formula for the total fidelities of Gaussian states, which we expect to have applications beyond the scope of this paper. We investigate the total and symmetry-resolved fidelities in the XX spin chain, and focus on (i) fidelities between thermal states, and (ii) fidelities between reduced density matrices at zero temperature. Both therma…
Universal quantum computing with continuous variables requires non-Gaussian resources, in addition to a Gaussian set of operations. A known resource enabling universal quantum computation is the cubic phase state, a non-Gaussian state whose experimental implementation has so far remained elusive. In this paper, we introduce two Gaussian conversion protocols that allow for the conversion of a non-Gaussian state that has been achieved experimentally, namely the trisqueezed state [Sandbo Changet al., Phys. Rev. X10, 011011 (2020)],to a cubic phase state. The first protocol is deterministic and it…
We numerically emulate noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices and determine the minimal hardware requirements for two-site hybrid quantum-classical dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We develop a circuit recompilation algorithm which significantly reduces the number of quantum gates of the DMFT algorithm and find that the quantum-classical algorithm converges if the two-qubit gate fidelities are larger than 99%. The converged results agree with the exact solution within 10%, and perfect agreement within noise-induced error margins can be obtained for two-qubit gate fidelities exceedi…
Gaussian quantum states of bosonic systems are an important class of states. In particular, they play a key role in quantum optics as all processes generated by Hamiltonians up to second order in the field operators (i.e. linear optics and quadrature squeezing) preserve Gaussianity. A powerful approach to calculations and analysis of Gaussian states is using phase-space variables and symplectic transformations. The purpose of this note is to serve as a concise reference for performing phase-space calculations on Gaussian states. In particular, we list symplectic transformations for commonly us…
In this paper, we compare single-photon qubits and hybrid qubits as information carriers through quantum teleportation using a Gaussian continuous-variable channel. A hybrid qubit in our study is in the form of entanglement between a coherent state and a single photon. We find that hybrid qubits outperform photonic qubits when coherent amplitudes of the hybrid qubits are as low as $α\lesssim 1$, while photonic qubits yield better results for larger amplitudes. We analyze effects of photon losses, and observe that the overall character of teleportation for different qubits remains the same alth…
Here we show an ultra-low noise regime of operation in a simple quantum memory in warm Rb atomic vapor. By modelling the quantum dynamics of four-level room temperature atoms, we achieve fidelities >90% for single-photon level polarization qubits, clearly surpassing any classical strategy exploiting the non-unitary memory efficiency. This is the first time such important threshold has been crossed with a room temperature device. Additionally we also show novel experimental techniques capable of producing fidelities close to unity. Our results demonstrate the potential of simple, resource-moder…

The strong law of large numbers asserts that experimentally obtained mean values, in the limit of number of repetitions of the experiment going to infinity, converges almost surely to the theoretical predictions which are based on a priori assumed constant values for probabilities of the random events. Hence in most theoretical calculations, we implicitly neglect fluctuations around the mean. However in practice, we can repeat the experiment only finitely many times, and hence fluctuations are inevitable, and may lead to erroneous judgments. It is theoretically possible to teleport an unknown …
A comparison of gate fidelities between different spin qubit types defined in quantum dots and a donor under different control errors is reported. We studied five qubit types, namely the quantum dot spin qubit, the double quantum dot singlet-triplet qubit, the double quantum dot hybrid qubit, the donor qubit and the quantum dot spin-donor qubit. For each one, we derived analytical time sequences that realize single qubit rotations along the principal axis of the Bloch sphere. We estimated the effects of control errors on the gate fidelity by using a Gaussian noise model. Then we compared the g…
We consider Gaussian quantum circuits supplemented with non-Gaussian input states and derive sufficient conditions for efficient classical strong simulation of these circuits. In particular, we generalise the stellar representation of continuous-variable quantum states to the multimode setting and relate the stellar rank of the input non-Gaussian states, a recently introduced measure of non-Gaussianity, to the cost of evaluating classically the output probability densities of these circuits. Our results have consequences for the strong simulability of a large class of near-term continuous-vari…
It is well known that photons can carry a spatial structure akin to a "twisted" or "rippled" wavefront. Such structured light fields have sparked significant interest in both classical and quantum physics, with applications ranging from dense communications to light-matter interaction. Harnessing the full advantage of transverse spatial photonic encoding using the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) basis in the quantum domain requires control over both the azimuthal (twisted) and radial (rippled) components of photons. However, precise measurement of the radial photonic degree-of-freedom has proven to be …
In this contribution, we have investigated the bidirectional quantum teleportation (BQT) of single-qubit states using a Bell state influenced by decoherence channels with memory, dephasing and amplitude damping channels. The expressions of the negativity, as a measure of the entanglement remaining in the BQT quantum channel, the teleportation fidelities and the quantum Fisher information are also evaluated. We find that both these last quantities depend on the survival amount of entanglement in the BQT quantum channel, on the decoherence factor and on the correlation degree of the decoherence …
We propose a general approach to implement nonadiabatic geometric single- and two-qubit gates beyond the rotating wave approximation (RWA). This protocol is compatible with most optimal control methods used in previous RWA protocols; thus, it is as robust as (or even more robust than) the RWA protocols. Using counter-rotating effects allows us to apply strong drives. Therefore, we can improve the gate speed by 5--10 times compared to the RWA counterpart for implementing high-fidelity ($\geq 99.99\%$) gates. Such an ultrafast evolution (nanoseconds, even picoseconds) significantly reduces the i…
I show that classical capacity per unit cost of noisy bosonic Gaussian channels can be attained by employing generalized on-off keying modulation format and a projective measurement of individual output states. This means that neither complicated collective measurements nor phase-sensitive detection is required to communicate over optical channels at the ultimate limit imposed by laws of quantum mechanics in the limit of low average cost.
The notion of classicality of quantum evolution of light is an object of both conceptual and practical importance. The main goal of this work is to derive the exact conditions for the classicality of quantum Gaussian evolution, i.e. the evolution of Gaussian states of light and their convex combinations, a model which is of great significance in quantum optics and information. Several examples, ranging from Gaussian thermal operations to entanglement-maximizing dissipative engineering, are discussed. Our results are obtained using the recently introduced mesoscopic theory of the reduced state …
Random access memory is an indispensable device for classical information technology. Analog to this, for quantum information technology, it is desirable to have a random access quantum memory with many memory cells and programmable access to each cell. We report an experiment that realizes a random access quantum memory of 105 qubits carried by 210 memory cells in a macroscopic atomic ensemble. We demonstrate storage of optical qubits into these memory cells and their read-out at programmable times by arbitrary orders with fidelities exceeding any classical bound. Experimental realization of …

In this paper we consider the classical capacity problem for Gaussian measurement channels without imposing any kind of threshold condition. We prove Gaussianity of the average state of the optimal ensemble in general and discuss the Hypothesis of Gaussian Maximizers concerning the structure of the ensemble. The proof uses an approach of Wolf, Giedke and Cirac adapted to the convex closure of the output differential entropy. Then we discuss the case of one mode in detail, including the dual problem of accessible information of a Gaussian ensemble. In quantum communications there are several st…
Quantum discord is a measure of non-classical correlations, which are excess correlations inherent in quantum states that cannot be accessed by classical measurements. For multipartite states, the classically accessible correlations can be defined by the mutual information of the multipartite measurement outcomes. In general the quantum discord of an arbitrary quantum state involves an optimisation of over the classical measurements which is hard to compute. In this paper, we examine the quantum discord in the experimentally relevant case when the quantum states are Gaussian and the measuremen…
