We present a general theoretical formalism to compute the fidelity of transformations of unknown quantum states. We then focus on the case of Gaussian transformations of continuous variable quantum systems, where, for the case of a Gaussian distribution of displaced coherent states, the theory is readily tractable by a covariance matrix formalism. We present analytical results for recently implemented teleportation and memory storage protocols for continuous variables.
We present two schemes for teleporting an unknown two-particle entangled state from a sender (Alice) to a receiver (Bob) via a four-particle entangled cluster state. As it is shown, the unknown two-particle entangled state can be teleported perfectly, and the successful possibilities and fidelities of the two schemes both reach unit.
We show that in the case of unknown {\em harmonic oscillator coherent states} it is possible to achieve what we call {\it perfect information cloning}. By this we mean that it is still possible to make arbitrary number of copies of a state which has {\it exactly} the same information content as the original unknown coherent state. By making use of this {\it perfect information cloning} it would be possible to estimate the original state through measurements and make arbitrary number of copies of the estimator. We define the notion of a {\em Measurement Fidelity}. We show that this information …
We show that the quantum measurement known as the pretty good measurement can be used to identify an unknown quantum state picked from any set of $n$ mixed states that have pairwise fidelities upper-bounded by a constant below 1, given $O(\log n)$ copies of the unknown state, with high success probability in the worst case. If the unknown state is promised to be pure, there is an explicit measurement strategy which solves this worst-case quantum state discrimination problem with $\widetilde{O}(\|G\|)$ copies, where $G$ is the Gram matrix of the states.
We study the optimal cloning transformation for two pairs of orthogonal states of two-dimensional quantum systems, and derive the corresponding optimal fidelities.
The notions of qubits and coherent states correspond to different physical systems and are described by specific formalisms. Qubits are associated with a two-dimensional Hilbert space and can be illustrated on the Bloch sphere. In contrast, the underlying Hilbert space of coherent states is infinite-dimensional and the states are typically represented in phase space. For the particular case of binary coherent state alphabets these otherwise distinct formalisms can equally be applied. We capitalize this formal connection to analyse the properties of optimally cloned binary coherent states. Seve…
We study mechanisms that allow one to synchronize the quantum phase of two qubits relative to a fixed basis. Starting from one qubit in a fixed reference state and the other in an unknown state, we find that contrary to the impossibility of perfect quantum cloning, the quantum-phase can be synchronized perfectly through a joined unitary operation. When both qubits are initially in a pure unknown state, perfect quantum-phase synchronization through unitary operations becomes impossible. In this situation we determine the maximum average quantum-phase synchronization fidelity, the distribution o…
We investigate the optimal distribution of quantum information over multipartite systems in asymmetric settings. We introduce cloning transformations that take $N$ identical replicas of a pure state in any dimension as input, and yield a collection of clones with non-identical fidelities. As an example, if the clones are partitioned into a set of $M_A$ clones with fidelity $F^A$ and another set of $M_B$ clones with fidelity $F^B$, the trade-off between these fidelities is analyzed, and particular cases of optimal $N \to M_A+M_B$ cloning machines are exhibited. We also present an optimal $1 \to…
We report the experimental demonstration of continuous variable cloning of phase conjugate coherent states as proposed by Cerf and Iblisdir (Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 247903 (2001)). In contrast to the proposal of Cerf and Iblisdir, the cloning transformation is accomplished using only linear optical components, homodyne detection and feedforward. Three clones are succesfully produced with fidelities about 89%.
To certify that an experimentally implemented quantum transformation is a certain unitary operation U on a d-dimensional Hilbert space, it suffices to determine fidelities of output states for d+1 suitably chosen pure input states [Reich et al., Phys. Rev. A 88, 042309 (2013)]. The set of these d+1 probe states can consist of d orthogonal states that form a basis and one additional state which is a balanced superposition of all d basis states. Here we provide an analytical lower bound on quantum process fidelity for two-qubit quantum gates which results from the knowledge of average state fide…
Gaussian quantum states of bosonic systems are an important class of states. In particular, they play a key role in quantum optics as all processes generated by Hamiltonians up to second order in the field operators (i.e. linear optics and quadrature squeezing) preserve Gaussianity. A powerful approach to calculations and analysis of Gaussian states is using phase-space variables and symplectic transformations. The purpose of this note is to serve as a concise reference for performing phase-space calculations on Gaussian states. In particular, we list symplectic transformations for commonly us…
We describe a scalable stochastic method for the experimental measurement of generalized fidelities characterizing the accuracy of the implementation of a coherent quantum transformation. The method is based on the motion reversal of random unitary operators. In the simplest case our method enables direct estimation of the average gate fidelity. The more general fidelities are characterized by a universal exponential rate of fidelity loss. In all cases the measurable fidelity decrease is directly related to the strength of the noise affecting the implementation -- quantified by the trace of th…
Recent developments in integrated photonics technology are opening the way to the fabrication of complex linear optical interferometers. The application of this platform is ubiquitous in quantum information science, from quantum simulation to quantum metrology, including the quest for quantum supremacy via the boson sampling problem. Within these contexts, the capability to learn efficiently the unitary operation of the implemented interferometers becomes a crucial requirement. In this letter we develop a reconstruction algorithm based on a genetic approach, which can be adopted as a tool to c…
We address the problem of learning an unknown unitary transformation from a finite number of examples. The problem consists in finding the learning machine that optimally emulates the examples, thus reproducing the unknown unitary maximum fidelity. Learning a unitary is equivalent to storing it in the state of a quantum memory (the memory of the learning machine), and subsequently retrieving it. We prove that, whenever the unknown unitary is drawn from a group, the optimal strategy consists in a parallel call of the available uses followed by a "measure-and-rotate" retrieving. Differing from t…
An experiment is performed to reconstruct an unknown photonic quantum state with a limited amount of copies. A semi-quantum reinforcement learning approach is employed to adapt one qubit state, an "agent," to an unknown quantum state, an "environment," by successive single-shot measurements and feedback, in order to achieve maximum overlap. The experimental learning device herein, composed of a quantum photonics setup, can adjust the corresponding parameters to rotate the agent system based on the measurement outcomes "0" or "1" in the environment (i.e., reward/punishment signals). The results…
In the well known treatment of quantum teleportation, the receiver should convert the state of his EPR particle into the replica of the unknown quantum state by one of four possible unitary transformations. However, the importance of these unitary transformations must be emphasized. We will show in this paper that the receiver can not transform the state of his particle into an exact replica of the unknown state which the sender want to transfer if he have not a proper implementation of these unitary transformations. In the procedure of converting state, the inevitable coupling between EPR par…
In this work, we introduce a special kind of quantum cloning machine called Hybrid quantum cloning machine. The introduced Hybrid quantum cloning machine or transformation is nothing but a combination of pre-existing quantum cloning transformations. In this sense it creates its own identity in the field of quantum cloners. Hybrid quantum cloning machine can be of two types: (i) State dependent and (ii) State independent or Universal. We study here the above two types of Hybrid quantum cloning machines. Later we will show that the state dependent hybrid quantum-cloning machine can be applied on…
This paper presents a series of general results about the optimal estimation of physical transformations in a given symmetry group. In particular, it is shown how the different symmetries of the problem determine different properties of the optimal estimation strategy. The paper also contains a discussion about the role of entanglement between the representation and multiplicity spaces and about the optimality of square-root measurements.
Application of current and near-term quantum hardware to the electronic structure problem is highly limited by qubit counts, coherence times, and gate fidelities. To address these restrictions within the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) framework, many recent contributions have suggested dressing the electronic Hamiltonian to include a part of electron correlation, leaving the rest to be accounted by VQE state preparation. We present a new dressing scheme that combines preservation of the Hamiltonian hermiticity and an exact quadratic truncation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff expansion. …
For an unknown eigenstate $|ψ\rangle$ of a unitary operator $U$, suppose we have an estimate of the corresponding eigenvalue which is separated from all other eigenvalues by a minimum gap of magnitude $Δ$. In the eigenstate-marking problem (EMP), the goal is to implement a selective phase transformation of the $|ψ\rangle$ state (known as \emph{marking} the $|ψ\rangle$ state in the language of the quantum search algorithms). The EMP finds important applications in the construction of several quantum algorithms. The best known algorithm for the EMP combines the ideas of the phase estimation algo…
We consider the task of deciding whether an unknown qubit state falls in a prescribed neighborhood of a reference state. We assume that several copies of the unknown state are given and apply a unitary operation pairwise on them combined with a post-selection scheme conditioned on the measurement result obtained on one of the qubits of the pair. The resulting transformation is a deterministic, nonlinear, chaotic map in the Hilbert space. We derive a class of these transformations capable of orthogonalizing nonorthogonal qubit states after a few iterations. These nonlinear maps orthogonalize st…
Given a quantum gate implementing a $d$-dimensional unitary operation $U_d$, without any specific description but $d$, and permitted to use $k$ times, we present a universal probabilistic heralded quantum circuit that implements the exact inverse $U_d^{-1}$, whose failure probability decays, exponentially in $k$. The protocol employs an adaptive strategy, proven necessary for the exponential performance. It requires $k\geq d-1$, proven necessary for exact implementation of $U_d^{-1}$ with quantum circuits. Moreover, even when quantum circuits with indefinite causal order are allowed, $k\geq d-…
Quantum control in large dimensional Hilbert spaces is essential for realizing the power of quantum information processing. For closed quantum systems the relevant input/output maps are unitary transformations, and the fundamental challenge becomes how to implement these with high fidelity in the presence of experimental imperfections and decoherence. For two-level systems (qubits) most aspects of unitary control are well understood, but for systems with Hilbert space dimension d>2 (qudits), many questions remain regarding the optimal design of control Hamiltonians and the feasibility of robus…
We show that one can deterministically generate out of $N$ copies of an unknown unitary operation up to $N^2$ almost perfect copies. The result holds for all operations generated by a Hamiltonian with an unknown interaction strength. This generalizes a similar result in the context of phase covariant cloning where, however, super-replication comes at the price of an exponentially reduced probability of success. We also show that multiple copies of unitary operations can be emulated by operations acting on a much smaller space, e.g., a magnetic field acting on a single $n$-level system allows o…
It is not possible to disentangle a qubit in an unknown state $|ψ>$ from a set of (N-1) ancilla qubits prepared in a specific reference state $|0>$. That is, it is not possible to {\em perfectly} perform the transformation $(|ψ,0...,0\r +|0,ψ,...,0\r +...+ |0,0,...ψ\r) \to |0,...,0>\otimes |ψ>$. The question is then how well we can do? We consider a number of different methods of extracting an unknown state from an entangled state formed from that qubit and a set of ancilla qubits in an known state. Measuring the whole system is, as expected, the least effective method. We present various quan…
Linear optical elements are pivotal instruments in the manipulation of classical and quantum states of light. The vast progress in integrated quantum photonic technology enables the implementation of large numbers of such elements on chip while providing interferometric stability. As a trade-off these structures face the intrinsic challenge of characterizing their optical transformation as individual optical elements are not directly accessible. Thus the unitary transformation needs to be reconstructed from a dataset generated with having access to the input and output ports of the device only…
In the context of quantum communications between two parties (here Alice and Bob), Bob's lack of knowledge about the communications channel can affect the purity of the states that he receives. The operation of applying an unknown unitary transformation to a state, thus reducing its purity, is called "twirling". As twirling affects the states that Bob receives, it also affects his perception of the operations that Alice applies to her states. In this work we find that not every operation is representable after a twirling, we show the minimal requirement for this to be possible, and we identify…
We present a study on preparing and manipulating path-like temporal-mode (TM) qubits based on third-order nonlinear interactions. Specifically, we consider the process of frequency conversion via difference frequency generation. To prepare a qubit, we aim to use Gaussian input states to a nonlinear waveguide. The coupling between the input state and a specific TM is maximized, obtaining qubits prepared with fidelities close to one. TMs evolve linearly within the medium; therefore, it is possible to define rotations around any axis contained in the $xy$ plane, allowing spanning the full Bloch s…
Alice and Bob are given an unknown initial state chosen from a set of pure quantum states. Their task is to transform the initial state to a corresponding final pure state using local operations only. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions on the existence of such a transformation. We also provide efficient algorithms that can quickly rule out the possibility of transforming a set of initial states to a set of final states.
The well-known algorithm for quantum phase estimation requires that the considered unitary is available as a conditional transformation depending on the quantum state of an ancilla register. We present an algorithm converting an unknown n-qubit pair-interaction Hamiltonian into a conditional one such that standard phase estimation can be applied to measure the energy. Our essential assumption is that the considered system can be brought into interaction with a quantum computer. For large n the algorithm could still be applicable for estimating the density of energy states and might therefore b…
In this article we propose a method to estimate with high accuracy pure quantum states of a single qudit. Our method is based on the minimization of the squared error between the complex probability amplitudes of the unknown state and its estimate. We show by means of numerical experiments that the estimation accuracy of the present method, which is given by the expectation of the squared error on the sample space of estimates, is state independent. Furthermore, the estimation accuracy delivered by our method is close to twice the Gill-Massar lower bound, which represents the best achievable a…
Following the work of Niu and Griffiths, in \emph{Phys.Rev.A 58, 4377(1998)}, we shall investigate the problem, how to design the optimal quantum cloning machines (QCMs) for qubit system, with the help of Bloch-sphere representation. In stead of the quality factor there, the Fiuráusek's optimal condition, where the optimal cloning machine should maximize a convex mixture of the average fidelity, is used as the optimality criterion in present protocol. Almost all of the known optimal QCMs in previous works, the cloning for states with fixed polar angle, the phase-covariant cloning, the universa…
Estimating the eigenvalues of a unitary transformation U by standard phase estimation requires the implementation of controlled-U-gates which are not available if U is only given as a black box. We show that a simple trick allows to measure eigenvalues of U\otimes U^\dagger even in this case. Running the algorithm several times allows therefore to estimate the autocorrelation function of the density of eigenstates of U. This can be applied to find periodicities in the energy spectrum of a quantum system with unknown Hamiltonian if it can be coupled to a quantum computer.
A fundamental task in quantum information science is to transfer an unknown state from particle $A$ to particle $B$ (often in remote space locations) by using a bipartite quantum operation $\mathcal{E}^{AB}$. We suggest the power of $\mathcal{E}^{AB}$ for quantum state transfer (QST) to be the maximal average probability of QST over the initial states of particle $B$ and the identifications of the state vectors between $A$ and $B$. We find the QST power of a bipartite quantum operations satisfies four desired properties between two $d$-dimensional Hilbert spaces. When $A$ and $B$ are qubits, t…
We propose a probabilistic quantum protocol to realize a nonlinear transformation of qutrit states, which by iterative applications on ensembles can be used to distinguish two types of pure states. The protocol involves single-qutrit and two-qutrit unitary operations as well as post-selection according to the results obtained in intermediate measurements. We utilize the nonlinear transformation in an algorithm to identify a quantum state provided it belongs to an arbitrary known finite set. The algorithm is based on dividing the known set of states into two appropriately designed subsets which…
In the present work, we propose a generalization of the confidence polytopes approach for quantum state tomography (QST) to the case of quantum process tomography (QPT). Our approach allows obtaining a confidence region in the polytope form for a Choi matrix of an unknown quantum channel based on the measurement results of the corresponding QPT experiment. The method uses the improved version of the expression for confidence levels for the case of several positive operator-valued measures (POVMs). We then demonstrate how confidence polytopes can be employed for calculating confidence intervals…
We prove a general limitation in quantum information that unifies the impossibility principles such as no-cloning and no-anticloning. Further, we show that for an unknown qubit one cannot design a universal Hadamard gate for creating equal superposition of the original and its complement state. Surprisingly, we find that Hadamard transformations exist for an unknown qubit chosen either from the polar or equatorial great circles. Also, we show that for an unknown qubit one cannot design a universal unitary gate for creating unequal superpositions of the original and its complement state. We dis…
We suggest implementation of quantum teleportation protocol of unknown qubit beyond Bell states formalism. Hybrid entangled state composed of coherent components that belong to Alice and dual-rail single photon at Bob disposal is used. Nonlinear effect on the teleported state is realized due to peculiarity of interaction of coherent components with discrete variable state on a beam splitter. Bob performs unitary transformation after receiving the appropriate classical information. The protocol is nearly deterministic but the output state is subject to amplitude distortion which reduces the fid…

Extracting information from quantum devices has long been a crucial problem in the field of quantum mechanics. By performing elaborate measurements, quantum state tomography, an important and fundamental tool in quantum science and technology, can be used to determine unknown quantum states completely. In this study, we explore methods to determine multi-qubit pure quantum states uniquely and directly. Two adaptive protocols are proposed, with their respective quantum circuits. Herein, two or three observables are sufficient, while the number of measurement outcomes is either the same as or fe…
In spite of their simple description in terms of rotations or symplectic transformations in phase space, quadratic Hamiltonians such as those modeling the most common Gaussian operations on bosonic modes remain poorly understood in terms of entropy production. For instance, determining the von Neumann entropy produced by a Bogoliubov transformation is notably a hard problem, with generally no known analytical solution. Here, we overcome this difficulty by using the replica method, a tool borrowed from statistical physics and quantum field theory. We exhibit a first application of this method t…
Quantum tomography is a process of quantum state reconstruction using data from multiple measurements. An essential goal for a quantum tomography algorithm is to find measurements that will maximize the useful information about an unknown quantum state obtained through measurements. One of the recently proposed methods of quantum tomography is the algorithm based on rank-preserving transformations. The main idea is to transform a basic measurement set in a way to provide a situation that is equivalent to measuring the maximally mixed state. As long as tomography of a fully mixed state has the …
The usual way to reveal properties of an unknown quantum state, given many copies of a system in that state, is to perform measurements of different observables and to analyze the measurement results statistically. Here we show that the unknown quantum state can play an active role in its own analysis. In particular, given multiple copies of a quantum system with density matrix ρ, then it is possible to perform the unitary transformation e^{-iρt}. As a result, one can create quantum coherence among different copies of the system to perform quantum principal component analysis, revealing the ei…
An optimal universal cloning transformation is derived that produces M copies of an unknown qubit from a pair of orthogonal qubits. For M>6, the corresponding cloning fidelity is higher than that of the optimal copying of a pair of identical qubits. It is shown that this cloning transformation can be implemented probabilistically via parametric down-conversion by feeding the signal and idler modes of a nonlinear crystal with orthogonally polarized photons.
Unknown quantum pure states of arbitrary but definite S-level of a particle can be transferred onto a group of remote two-level particles through two-level EPRs as many as the number of those particles in this group. We construct such a kind of teleportation, the realization of which need a nonlocal unitary transformation to the quantum system that is made up of the s-level particle and all the two-level particles at one end of the EPRs, and measurements to all the single particles in this system. The unitary transformation to more than two particles is also written into the product form of tw…
Quantum canonical transformations corresponding to the action of the unitary operator $e^{iε(t)\sqrt{f(x)}p\sqrt{f(x)}}$ is studied. It is shown that for $f(x)=x$, the effect of this transformation is to rescale the position and momentum operators by $e^{ε(t)}$ and $e^{-ε(t)}$, respectively. This transformation is shown to lead to the identification of a previously unknown class of exactly solvable time-dependent harmonic oscillators. It turns out that the Caldirola-Kanai oscillator whose mass is given by $m=m_0 e^{γt}$, belongs to this class. It is also shown that for arbitrary $f(x)$, this c…

Quantum canonical transformations corresponding to time-dependent diffeomorphisms of the configuration space are studied. A special class of these transformations which correspond to time-dependent dilatations is used to identify a previously unknown class of exactly solvable time-dependent harmonic oscillators. The Caldirola-Kanai oscillator belongs to this class. For a general time-dependent harmonic oscillator, it is shown that choosing the dilatation parameter to satisfy the classical equation of motion, one obtains the solution of the Schrödinger equation. A simple generalization of this …
