We describe a scalable stochastic method for the experimental measurement of generalized fidelities characterizing the accuracy of the implementation of a coherent quantum transformation. The method is based on the motion reversal of random unitary operators. In the simplest case our method enables direct estimation of the average gate fidelity. The more general fidelities are characterized by a universal exponential rate of fidelity loss. In all cases the measurable fidelity decrease is directly related to the strength of the noise affecting the implementation -- quantified by the trace of the superoperator describing the non--unitary dynamics. While the scalability of our stochastic protocol makes it most relevant in large Hilbert spaces (when quantum process tomography is infeasible), our method should be immediately useful for evaluating the degree of control that is achievable in any prototype quantum processing device. By varying over different experimental arrangements and error-correction strategies additional information about the noise can be determined.
Based on recently introduced efficient quantum state tomography schemes, we propose a scalable method for the tomography of unitary processes and the reconstruction of one-dimensional local Hamiltonians. As opposed to the exponential scaling with the number of subsystems of standard quantum process tomography, the method relies only on measurements of linearly many local observables and either (a) the ability to prepare eigenstates of locally informationally complete operators or (b) access to an ancilla of the same size as the to-be-characterized system and the ability to prepare a maximally …
We provide a general framework for handling the effects of a unitary disturbance on the estimation of the amplitude $λ$ associated to a unitary dynamics. By computing an analytical and general expression for the quantum Fisher information, we prove that the optimal estimation precision for $λ$ cannot be outperformed through the addition of such a unitary disturbance. However, if the dynamics of the system is already affected by an external field, increasing its strength does not necessary imply a loss in the optimal estimation precision.
We propose a quantum algorithm for finding eigenvalues of non-unitary matrices. We show how to construct, through interactions in a quantum system and projective measurements, a non-Hermitian or non-unitary matrix and obtain its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This proposal combines ideas of frequent measurement, measured quantum Fourier transform, and quantum state tomography. It provides a generalization of the conventional phase estimation algorithm, which is limited to Hermitian or unitary matrices.
Randomized benchmarking is a useful scheme for evaluation the average fidelity of a noisy quantum circuit. However, it is insensitive to the unitary error. Here, we propose a method of randomized benchmarking in which a unitary t-design is applied and by which the unitary error estimation can be converted to analysis of pseudo-randomness on a set of unitary operators. We give a bound on the number of randomized benchmarking sequences, when performing a unitary t-design on n-qubit d-dimensional system. By applying local random unitary operators, a decomposition of a unitary t-design, the bound …

The problem of optimally estimating an unknown unitary quantum operation with the aid of entanglement is addressed. The idea is to prepare an entangled pair, apply the unknown unitary to one of the two parts and then measure the joint output state. This measurement could be an entangled one or it could be separable (e.g., LOCC). A comparison is made between these possibilities and it is shown that by using non-separable measurements one can improve the accuracy of the estimation by a factor of $2(d+1)/d$ where $d$ is the dimension of the Hilbert space on which $U$ acts.
We investigate the simultaneous estimation of $n$ not necessarily identical unitary channels using multi-partite entanglement. We examine whether it is possible for the rate at which the mean square error decreases to be greater than that using the channels individually. For a reasonably general situation, in which there is no functional dependence between the channels, we show that this is not possible. We look at a case in which the channels are not necessarily identical but depend on a common variable. In this case, the mean square error decreases more rapidly using multi-partite entangleme…
We address the problem of the information-disturbance trade-off associated to the estimation of a quantum transformation, and show how the extraction of information about the a black box causes a perturbation of the corresponding input-output evolution. In the case of a black box performing a unitary transformation, randomly distributed according to the invariant measure, we give a complete solution of the problem, deriving the optimal trade-off curve and presenting an explicit construction of the optimal quantum network.
Here, we propose a way to control the interaction between qubits with always-on Ising interaction. Unlike the standard method to change the interaction strength with unitary operations, we fully make use of non-unitary properties of projective measurements so that we can effectively turn the interaction on or off via feedforward. Our scheme is useful to generate two- or three-dimensional cluster states that are universal resources for fault-tolerant quantum computation with this scheme, and it provides an alternative way to realize a scalable quantum pro
We construct a practical method for finding optimal Gaussian probe states for the estimation of parameters encoded by Gaussian unitary channels. This method can be used for finding all optimal probe states, rather than focusing on the performance of specific states as shown in previous studies. As an example, we apply this method to find optimal probes for the channel that combines the phase-change and squeezing channels, and for generalized two-mode squeezing and mode-mixing channels. The method enables a comprehensive study of temperature effects in Gaussian parameter estimation. It has been…
In this article we propose a method to estimate with high accuracy pure quantum states of a single qudit. Our method is based on the minimization of the squared error between the complex probability amplitudes of the unknown state and its estimate. We show by means of numerical experiments that the estimation accuracy of the present method, which is given by the expectation of the squared error on the sample space of estimates, is state independent. Furthermore, the estimation accuracy delivered by our method is close to twice the Gill-Massar lower bound, which represents the best achievable a…
Determining the phase in one arm of a quantum interferometer is discussed taking into account the three non-ideal aspects in real experiments: non-deterministic state preparation, non-unitary state evolution due to losses during state propagation, and imperfect state detection. A general expression is written for the probability of a measurement outcome taking into account these three non-ideal aspects. As an example of applying the formalism, the classical Fisher information and fidelity (Shannon mutual information between phase and measurements) are computed for few-photon Fock and N00N stat…
We give an explicit procedure based on entangled input states for estimating a $SU(d)$ operation $U$ with rate of convergence $1/N^2$ when sending $N$ particles through the device. We prove that this rate is optimal. We also evaluate the constant $C$ such that the asymptotic risk is $C/N^2$. However other strategies might yield a better const ant $C$.
We address the problem of continuous-variable quantum phase estimation in the presence of linear disturbance at the Hamiltonian level, by means of Gaussian probe states. In particular we discuss both unitary and random disturbance, by considering the parameter which characterizes the unwanted linear term present in the Hamiltonian as fixed (unitary disturbance) or random with a given probability distribution (random disturbance). We derive the optimal input Gaussian states at fixed energy, maximizing the quantum Fisher information over the squeezing angle and the squeezing energy fraction, and…
Since a general Gaussian process is phase-sensitive, a stable phase reference is required to take advantage of this feature. When the reference is missing, either due to the volatile nature of the measured sample or the measurement's technical limitations, the resulting process appears as random in phase. Under this condition, we consider two single-mode Gaussian processes, displacement and squeezing. We show that these two can be efficiently estimated using photon number states and photon number resolving detectors. For separate estimation of displacement and squeezing, the practical estimati…
State preparation is a process encoding the classical data into the quantum systems. Based on quantum phase estimation, we propose the specific quantum circuits for a deterministic state preparation algorithm and a probabilistic state preparation algorithm. To discuss the gate complexity in these algorithms, we decompose the diagonal unitary operators included in the phase estimation algorithms into the basic gates. Thus, we associate the state preparation problem with the decomposition problem of the diagonal unitary operators. We analyse the fidelities in the two algorithms and discuss the s…
In a ubiquitous $SU(2)$ dynamics, achieving the simultaneous optimal estimation of multiple parameters is significant but difficult. Using quantum control to optimize this $SU(2)$ coding unitary evolution is one of solutions. We propose a method, characterized by the nested cross-products of the coefficient vector $\mathbf{X}$ of $SU(2)$ generators and its partial derivative $\partial_\ell \mathbf{X}$, to investigate the control-enhanced quantum multiparameter estimation. Our work reveals that quantum control is not always functional in improving the estimation precision, which depends on the …
We provide a method for estimating spectral gaps in low-dimensional systems. Unlike traditional phase estimation, our approach does not require ancillary qubits nor does it require well characterised gates. Instead, it only requires the ability to perform approximate Haar-random unitary operations, applying the unitary whose eigenspectrum is sought out and performing measurements in the computational basis. We discuss application of these ideas to in-place amplitude estimation and quantum device calibration.
A quantum channel is a mapping which sends density matrices to density matrices. The estimation of quantum channels is of great importance to the field of quantum information. In this thesis two topics related to estimation of quantum channels are investigated. The first of these is the upper bound of Sarovar and Milburn (2006) on the Fisher information obtainable by measuring the output of a channel. Two questions raised by Sarovar and Milburn about their bound are answered. A Riemannian metric on the space of quantum states is introduced, related to the construction of the Sarovar and Milbur…
- In this paper we present a method to compute the coefficients of the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) on a quantum computer using quantum gates of polynomial complexity of the order O(n^3). The FrFt, a generalization of the DFT, has wide applications in signal processing and is particularly useful to implement the Pseudopolar and Radon transforms. Even though the FrFT is a non-unitary operation, to develop its quantum counterpart, we develop a unitary operator called the quantum Pseudo-fraction Fourier Transform (QPFrFT) in a higher-dimensional Hilbert space, in order to computer the coef…
We introduce an inductive $n$-qubit pure-state estimation method. This is based on projective measurements on states of $2n+1$ separable bases or $2$ entangled bases plus the computational basis. Thus, the total number of measurement bases scales as $O(n)$ and $O(1)$, respectively. Thereby, the proposed method exhibits a very favorable scaling in the number of qubits when compared to other estimation methods. Monte Carlo numerical experiments show that the method can achieve a high estimation fidelity. For instance, an average fidelity of $0.88$ on the Hilbert space of $10$ qubits is achieved …
This paper presents a series of general results about the optimal estimation of physical transformations in a given symmetry group. In particular, it is shown how the different symmetries of the problem determine different properties of the optimal estimation strategy. The paper also contains a discussion about the role of entanglement between the representation and multiplicity spaces and about the optimality of square-root measurements.
We propose a quantum tomography scheme for pure qudit systems which adopts random base measurements and generative learning methods, along with a built-in fidelity estimation approach to assess the reliability of the tomographic states. We prove the validity of the scheme theoretically, and we perform numerically simulated experiments on several target states including three typical quantum information states and randomly initiated states, demonstrating its efficiency and robustness. The number of replicas required by a certain convergence criterion grows in the manner of low-degree polynomial…
We propose an efficient approach for deterministically generating scalable cluster states with photons. This approach involves unitary transformations performed on atoms coupled to optical cavities. Its operation cost scales linearly with the number of qubits in the cluster state, and photon qubits are encoded such that single-qubit operations can be easily implemented by using linear optics. Robust optical one-way quantum computation can be performed since cluster states can be stored in atoms and then transferred to photons that can be easily operated and measured. Therefore, this proposal c…

A generic qubit unitary operator affected by quantum noise is duplicated and inserted in a coherently superposed channel, superposing two paths offered to a probe qubit across the noisy unitary, and driven by a control qubit. A characterization is performed of the transformation realized by the superposed channel on the joint state of the probe-control qubit pair. The superposed channel is then specifically analyzed for the fundamental metrological task of phase estimation on the noisy unitary, with the performance assessed by the Fisher information, classical or quantum. A comparison is made …
A generic qubit unitary operator affected by depolarizing noise is duplicated and inserted in a quantum switch process realizing a superposition of causal orders. The characterization of the resulting switched quantum channel is worked out for its action on the joint state of the probe-control qubit pair. The switched channel is then specifically investigated for the important metrological task of phase estimation on the noisy unitary operator, with the performance assessed by the Fisher information, classical or quantum. A comparison is made with conventional techniques of estimation where th…
Unitary Fourier transform lies at the core of the multitudinous computational and metrological algorithms. Here we show experimentally how the unitary Fourier transform-based phase estimation protocol, used namely in quantum metrology, can be translated into the classical linear optical framework. The developed setup made of beam splitters, mirrors and phase shifters demonstrates how the classical coherence, similarly to the quantum coherence, poses a resource for obtaining information about the measurable physical quantities. Our study opens route to the reliable implementation of the small-s…
Any repeated use of a fixed experimental instrument is subject to memory effects. We design an estimation method uncovering the details of the underlying interaction between the system and the internal memory without having any experimental access to memory degrees of freedom. In such case, by definition, any memoryless quantum process tomography (QPT) fails, because the observed data sequences do not satisfy the elementary condition of statistical independence. However, we show that the randomness implemented in certain QPT schemes is sufficient to guarantee the emergence of observable "stati…
In quantum metrology, it is widely believed that the quantum Cramer-Rao bound is attainable bound while it is not true. In order to clarify this point, we explain why the quantum Cramer-Rao bound cannot be attained geometrically. In this manuscript, we investigate noiseless channel estimation under energy constraint for states, using a physically reasonable error function, and present the optimal state and the attainable bound. We propose the experimental generation of the optimal states for enhanced metrology using squeezing transformations. This makes the estimation of unitary channels physi…
We investigate the optimal quantum state for an atomic gyroscope based on a three-site Bose-Hubbard model. In previous studies, various states such as the uncorrelated state, the BAT state and the NOON state are employed as the probe states to estimate the phase uncertainty. In this article, we present a Hermitian operator $\mathcal{H}$ and an equivalent unitary parametrization transformation to calculate the quantum Fisher information for any initial states. Exploiting this equivalent unitary parametrization transformation, we can seek the optimal state which gives the maximal quantum Fisher …
We study quantum tomography from a continuous measurement record obtained by measuring expectation values of a set of Hermitian operators obtained from unitary evolution of an initial observable. For this purpose, we consider the application of a random unitary, diagonal in a fixed basis at each time step and quantify the information gain in tomography using Fisher information of the measurement record and the Shannon entropy associated with the eigenvalues of covariance matrix of the estimation. Surprisingly, very high fidelity of reconstruction is obtained using random unitaries diagonal in …
Quantum Fisher information plays a central role in the field of quantum metrology. In this paper we study the problem of quantum Fisher information of unitary processes. Associated to each parameter $θ_i$ of unitary process $U(\boldsymbolθ)$, there exists a unique Hermitian matrix $M_{θ_i}=i(U^\dagger\partial_{θ_i} U)$. Except for some simple cases, such as when the parameter under estimation is an overall multiplicative factor in the Hamiltonian, calculation of these matrices is not an easy task to treat even for estimating a single parameter of qubit systems. Using the Bloch vector $\boldsym…

Multi-mode NOON states have been attracting increasing attentions recently for their abilities of obtaining supersensitive and superresolved measurements for simultaneous multiple-phase estimation. In this paper, four different methods of generating multi-mode NOON states with high photon number are proposed. The first method is a linear optical approach that makes use of the Fock state filtration to reduce lower-order Fock state terms from the coherent state inputs, which are jointly combined to produce a multi-mode NOON state with the triggering of single-photon coincidence detections (SPCD)…
Topological quantum error correcting codes have emerged as leading candidates towards the goal of achieving large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers. However, quantifying entanglement in these systems of large size in the presence of noise is a challenging task. In this paper, we provide two different prescriptions to characterize noisy stabilizer states, including the surface and the color codes, in terms of localizable entanglement over a subset of qubits. In one approach, we exploit appropriately constructed entanglement witness operators to estimate a witness-based lower bound of local…
We formulate the error and disturbance in quantum measurement by invoking quantum estimation theory. The disturbance formulated here characterizes the non-unitary state change caused by the measurement. We prove that the product of the error and disturbance is bounded from below by the commutator of the observables. We also find the attainable bound of the product.
