We introduce a condition for memoryless quantum channels which, when satisfied guarantees the multiplicativity of the maximal l_p-norm with p a fixed integer. By applying the condition to qubit channels, it can be shown that it is not a necessary condition, although some known results for qubits can be recovered. When applied to the Werner-Holevo channel, which is known to violate multiplicativity when p is large relative to the dimension d, the condition suggests that multiplicativity holds when $d \geqslant 2^{p-1}$. This conjecture is proved explicitly for p=2, 3, 4. Finally, a new class of channels is considered which generalizes the depolarizing channel to maps which are combinations of the identity channel and a noisy one whose image is an arbitrary density matrix. It is shown that these channels are multiplicative for p = 2.
The maximal p-norm multiplicativity conjecture is false
The fully quantum reverse Shannon theorem establishes the optimal rate of noiseless classical communication required for simulating the action of many instances of a noisy quantum channel on an arbitrary input state, while also allowing for an arbitrary amount of shared entanglement of an arbitrary form. Turning this theorem around establishes a strong converse for the entanglement-assisted classical capacity of any quantum channel. This paper proves the strong converse for entanglement-assisted capacity by a completely different approach and identifies a bound on the strong converse exponent …
We compute the $\mathcal S^p \to \mathcal S^p$ norm of a general Gaussian gauge-covariant multi-mode channel for any $1\leq p<\infty$, where $\mathcal S^p$ is a Schatten space. As a consequence, we verify the Gaussian optimizer conjecture and the multiplicativity conjecture in these cases.
We analyze the quantum capacity of a unital quantum channel, using ideas from the proof of near-optimality of Petz recovery map [Barnum and Knill 2000] and give an upper bound on the quantum capacity in terms of regularized output $2$-norm of the channel. We also show that any code attempting to exceed this upper bound must incur large error in decoding, which can be viewed as a weaker version of the strong converse results for quantum capacity. As an application, we find nearly matching upper and lower bounds (up to an additive constant) on the quantum capacity of quantum expander channels. U…
We realize Landau-Streater (LS) and Werner-Holevo (WH) quantum channels for qutrits on the IBM quantum computers. These channels correspond to interaction between the qutrit and its environment that result in the globally unitarily covariant qutrit transformation violating multiplicativity of the maximal $p$-norm. Our realization of LS and WH channels is based on embedding qutrit states into states of two qubits and using single-qubit and two-qubit CNOT gates to implement the specific interaction. We employ the standard quantum gates hence the developed algorithm suits any quantum computer. We…

Given a linear map $Φ: M_n \rightarrow M_m$, its multiplicity maps are defined as the family of linear maps $Φ\otimes \text{id}_k : M_n \otimes M_k \rightarrow M_m \otimes M_k$, where $\text{id}_k$ denotes the identity on $M_k$. Let $\|\cdot\|_1$ denote the trace-norm on matrices, as well as the induced trace-norm on linear maps of matrices, i.e. $\|Φ\|_1 = \max\{\|Φ(X)\|_1 : X \in M_n, \|X\|_1 = 1\}$. A fact of fundamental importance in both operator algebras and quantum information is that $\|Φ\otimes \text{id}_k\|_1$ can grow with $k$. In general, the rate of growth is bounded by $\|Φ\otime…
We provide a simplified characterization of entanglement in physical systems which are symmetric under the action of subgroups of the symmetric group acting on the party labels. Sets of entanglements are inherently equal, lying in the same orbit under the group action, which we demonstrate for cyclic, dihedral, and polyhedral groups. We then introduce new, generalized relationships for the maxima of those entanglement by exploiting the normalizer and normal subgroups of the physical symmetry group.
