We consider generalizations of depolarizing channels to maps in which the identity channel is replaced by a convex combinations of unitary conjugations.
We show that one can construct unital channels of this type for which the input which achieves maximal output purity is unique. We give conditions under which multiplicativity of the maximal p-norm and additivity of the minimal output entropy. We also show that the Holevo capacity need not equal log d - the minimal entropy as one might expect for a convex combination of unitary conjugations. Conversely, we give examples for which this condition holds, but the channel has no evident covariance properties.
The Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland (HSW) classical (entanglement-unassisted) channel capacity for a class of qudit unital channels is shown to be C = log2(d) - Smin, where d is the dimension of the qudit, and Smin is the minimum possible von Neumann entropy at the channel output. The HSW channel capacity for tensor products of this class of unital qudit channels is shown to obey the same formula.
We analyze a recently found inequality for eigenvalues of the density matrix and purity parameter describing either a bipartite system state or a single qudit state. The Minkowski type trace inequality for the density matrices of the qudit states is rewritten in terms of the purities. The properties of the obtained inequality are discussed. The $X$-states of the two qubits and the single qudit are considered in detail. A study of the relation of the obtained purity inequalities with the entanglement is presented.
We analyze how a maximally entangled state of two-qubits (e.g., the singlet $ψ_s$) is affected by action of local channels described by completely positive maps $\cE$ . We analyze the concurrence and the purity of states $\varrho_\cE=\cE\otimes\cI[ψ_s]$.Using the concurrence-{\it vs}-purity phase diagram we characterize local channels $\cE$ by their action on the singlet state $ψ_s$. We specify a region of the concurrence-{\it vs.}-purity diagram that is achievable from the singlet state via the action of unital channels. We show that even most general (including non-unital) local channels act…
We investigate the coherence of quantum channels using the Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism. The relation between the coherence and the purity of the channel respects a duality relation. It characterizes the allowed values of coherence when the channel has certain purity. This duality has been depicted via the Coherence-Purity (Co-Pu) diagrams. In particular, we study the quantum coherence of the unital and non-unital qubit channels and find out the allowed region of coherence for a fixed purity. We also study coherence of different incoherent channels, namely, incoherent operation (IO), strictly…
We analyze the dynamics of a system qudit of dimension mu sequentially interacting with the nu-dimensional qudits of a chain playing the ore of an environment. Each pairwise collision has been modeled as a random unitary transformation. The relaxation to equilibrium of the purity of the system qudit, averaged over random collisions, is analytically computed by means of a Markov chain approach. In particular, we show that the steady state is the one corresponding to the steady state for random collisions with a single environment qudit of effective dimension nu_e=nu*mu. Finally, we numerically …
The purity, Tr(rho^2), measures how pure or mixed a quantum state rho is. It is well known that quantum dynamical semigroups that preserve the identity operator (which we refer to as unital) are strictly purity-decreasing transformations. Here we provide an almost complete characterization of the class of strictly purity-decreasing quantum dynamical semigroups. We show that in the case of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces a dynamical semigroup is strictly purity-decreasing if and only if it is unital, while in the infinite dimensional case, unitality is only sufficient.
We propose and theoretically study a method for the stochastic realization of arbitrary quantum channels on multimode single-photon qudits. In order for our method to be undemanding in its implementation, we restrict our analysis to linear-optical techniques, vacuum ancillary states and non-adaptive schemes, but we allow for random switching between different optical networks. With our method it is possible to deterministically implement random-unitary channels and to stochastically implement general, non-unital channels. We provide an expression for the optimal probability of success of our s…
We consider an arbitrary qubit channel depending on a single parameter, which is to be estimated by a physical process. Using the quantum Fisher information per channel invocation to quantify the estimation accuracy, we consider various estimation protocols when the available initial states are mixed with very low purity. We compare a protocol using a single channel invocation on one out of $n$ qubits prepared in a particular correlated input state to the optimal protocol using uncorrelated input states, with the same initial state purity. We show that, to lowest order in initial-state purity,…
We present a tomographic method which requires only $4d-3$ measurement outcomes to reconstruct \emph{any} pure quantum state of arbitrary dimension $d$. Using the proposed scheme we have experimentally reconstructed a large number of pure states of dimension $d=7$, obtaining a mean fidelity of $0.94$. Moreover, we performed numerical simulations of the reconstruction process, verifying the feasibility of the method for higher dimensions. In addition, the \emph{a priori} assumption of purity can be certified within the same set of measurements, what represents an improvement with respect to oth…
We propose a method for preparing mixed quantum states of arbitrary dimension $D$ ($D\geq2$) which are codified in the discretized transverse momentum and position of single photons, once they are sent through an aperture with $D$ slits. Following our previous technique we use a programmable single phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) to define the aperture and set the complex transmission amplitude of each slit, allowing the independent control of the complex coefficients that define the quantum state. Since these SLMs give us the possibility to dynamically varying the complex coefficient…
We address the use of asymptotic incompatibility (AI) to assess the quantumness of a multiparameter quantum statistical model. AI is a recently introduced measure which quantifies the difference between the Holevo and the SLD scalar bounds, and can be evaluated using only the symmetric logarithmic derivative (SLD) operators of the model. At first, we evaluate analytically the AI of the most general quantum statistical models involving two-level (qubit) and single-mode Gaussian continuous-variable quantum systems, and prove that AI is a simple monotonous function of the state purity. Then, we n…

Maximally entangled states--a resource for quantum information processing--can only be shared through noiseless quantum channels, whereas in practice channels are noisy. Here we ask: Given a noisy quantum channel, what is the maximum attainable purity (measured by singlet fraction) of shared entanglement for single channel use and local trace preserving operations? We find an exact formula of the maximum singlet fraction attainable for a qubit channel and give an explicit protocol to achieve the optimal value. The protocol distinguishes between unital and nonunital channels and requires no loc…
We study decoherence of two non-interacting qubits. The environment and its interaction with the qubits are modelled by random matrices. Decoherence, measured in terms of purity, is calculated in linear response approximation. Monte Carlo simulations illustrate the validity of this approximation and of its extension by exponentiation. The results up to this point are also used to study one qubit decoherence. Purity decay of entangled and product states are qualitatively similar though for the latter case it is slower. Numerical studies for a Bell pair as initial state reveal a one to one corre…
We study unitary evolution of bipartite entanglement in a circuit with nearest-neighbor random gates. Deriving a compact non-unitary description of purity dynamics on qudits we find a sudden transition in the purity relaxation rate the origin of which is in the underlying boundary localized eigenmodes -- the skin effect. We provide the full solution of the problem, being one of the simplest iterations of two-site matrices, namely, that each is a sum of only two projectors. This leads to rich dynamics influenced by the Jordan normal form of the kernel and, most importantly, a spectrum that is c…
Quantum channels can be described via a unitary coupling of system and environment, followed by a trace over the environment state space. Taking the trace instead over the system state space produces a different mapping which we call the conjugate channel. We explore the properties of conjugate channels and describe several different methods of construction. In general, conjugate channels map M_d to M_d' with d < d', and different constructions may differ by conjugation with a partial isometry. We show that a channel and its conjugate have the same minimal output entropy and maximal output p-n…
