We propose and theoretically study a method for the stochastic realization of arbitrary quantum channels on multimode single-photon qudits. In order for our method to be undemanding in its implementation, we restrict our analysis to linear-optical techniques, vacuum ancillary states and non-adaptive schemes, but we allow for random switching between different optical networks. With our method it is possible to deterministically implement random-unitary channels and to stochastically implement general, non-unital channels. We provide an expression for the optimal probability of success of our scheme and calculate this quantity for specific examples like the qubit amplitude-damping channel. The success probability is shown to be related to the entanglement properties of the Choi-Jamiolkowski state isomorphic to the channel.
Teleportation plays an important role in the communication of quantum information between the nodes of a quantum network and is viewed as an essential ingredient for long-distance Quantum Cryptography. We describe a method to teleport the quantum information carried by a photon in a superposition of a number $d$ of light modes (a "qudit") by the help of $d$ additional photons based on transcription. A qudit encoded into a single excitation of $d$ light modes (in our case Laguerre-Gauss modes which carry orbital angular momentum) is transcribed to $d$ single-rail photonic qubits, which are spat…
We analytically derive a decoherence model for orbital angular momentum states of a photon in a multimode optical fiber and show that rate of decoherence scales exponentially with $l^2$, where $l$ is the azimuthal mode order.~We also show numerically that for large values of $l$ the orbital angular momentum photon state completely dephases.~However for lower values of $l$ the decoherence can be minimized by using dynamical decoupling to allow for qudit high-bandwidth quantum communication and similar applications. \end{abstract}
We investigate the problem of optimally reversing the action of an arbitrary quantum channel C which acts independently on each component of an ensemble of n identically prepared d-dimensional quantum systems. In the limit of large ensembles, we construct the optimal reversing channel R* which has to be applied at the output ensemble state, to retrieve a smaller ensemble of m systems prepared in the input state, with the highest possible rate m/n. The solution is found by mapping the problem into the optimal reversal of Gaussian channels on quantum-classical continuous variable systems, which …
We prepare qudits based on angular multimode biphoton states by modulating the pump angular spectrum. The modes are prepared in the Schmidt basis and their intensity distributions do not overlap in space. This allows one to get rid of filtering losses while addressing single modes and to realize a single-shot qudit readout.
Measurement-device-independent (MDI) method is a way to solve all detector side-channel attacks in quantum key distribution (QKD). However, very little work has been done on experimentally feasible qudit-based MDI-QKD scheme although the famous (qudit-based) round-robin differential-phase-shift (RRDPS) scheme is vulnerable to attacks on uncharacterized detectors. Here we report a mother-of-all QKD protocol on which all provably secure qubit-based QKD schemes known to date including the RRDPS and the so-called Chau15 schemes are based. We also report an experimentally feasible MDI system via op…
The question of the discrimination of the Bell states of two qudits (i.e., d-dimensional quantum systems) by means of passive linear optical elements and conditional measurements is discussed. A qudit is supposed to be represented by d optical modes containing exactly one photon altogether. From recent results of Calsamiglia it follows that there is no way how to distinguish the Bell states of two qudits for d>2 - not even with the probability of success lower than one - without any auxiliary photons in ancillary modes. Following the results of Carollo and Palma it is proved that it is impossi…
The study of how to generate high-dimensional quantum states (qudits) is justified by the advantages that they can bring for the field of quantum information. However, to have some real practical potential for quantum communication, these states must be also of simple manipulation. Spatial qudits states, which are generated by engineering the transverse momentum of the parametric down-converted photons, have been until now considered of hard manipulation. Nevertheless, we show in this work a simple technique for modifying these states. This technique is based on the use of programmable diffrac…
We present a multimode treatment of the optical parametric oscillator, which is valid for both pulsed and continuous-wave pump fields. The two-time correlation functions of the output field are derived, and we apply the theory to analyze a scheme for heralded production of non-classical field states that may be subsequently stored in an atomic quantum memory.
We propose a universal scheme for the probabilistic generation of an arbitrary multimode entangled state of light with finite expansion in Fock basis. The suggested setup involves passive linear optics, single photon sources, strong coherent laser beams, and photodetectors with single-photon resolution. The efficiency of this setup may be greatly enhanced if, in addition, a quantum memory is available.
Though quantum algorithm acts as an important role in quantum computation science, not only for providing a great vision for solving classically unsolvable problems, but also due to the fact that it gives a potential way of understanding quantum physics, the origin of the power of quantum algorithm is still an open question. Non-classical correlation is regarded as the most possible answer for the open question. However we experimentally realize a quantum speed-up algorithm on four-level system with linear optical elements and prove that even a single qudit is enough for designing an oracle-ba…
Conventional Glauber coherent states (CS) can be defined in several equivalent ways, e.g., by displacing the vacuum or, explicitly, by their infinite Poissonian expansion in Fock states. It is well known that these definitions become inequivalent if applied to finite $d$-level systems (qudits). We present a comparative Wigner-function description of the qudit CS defined (i) by the action of the truncated displacement operator on the vacuum and (ii) by the Poissonian expansion in Fock states of the Glauber CS truncated at $(d-1)$-photon Fock state. These states can be generated from a classical…
We propose a novel interferometer by using optical transverse modes in multimode waveguide that can beat the standard quantum limit. In the scheme, the classical simulation of $N$-partical quantum entangled states is generated by using $N$ independent classical fields and linear optical elements. Similar to the quantum-enhanced measurements, the classical simulation can also achieve $\sqrt{N}$ enhancement over the precision of the measurement $N$ times for independent fields. Due to only using classical fields and linear optical elements, the scheme can be realized much more easily.
Quantum scissors device of Pegg et al. (1998 Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1604) enables truncation of the Fock-state expansion of an input optical field to qubit and qutrit (three-dimensional) states only. Here, a generalized scissors device is proposed using an eight-port optical interferometer. Upon post-selection based on photon counting results, the interferometer implements generation and teleportation of qudit (d-dimensional) states by truncation of an input field at the (d-1)th term of its Fock-state expansion up to d=6. Examples of selective truncations, which can be interpreted as a Fock-stat…
Entanglement represents an important resource for quantum information processing, but its generation itself requires physical resources that are limited. We propose a scheme for generating a wide class of entangled qudit-type states of optical field modes at sites separated by noisy medium when only weak optical nonlinearities are available at both sites. The protocol is also based on exploiting a weak probe field, transmitted between the sites and used for generation of quantum correlations between two spatially separated field modes. The idea of probabilistic entanglement enhancement by meas…
The resonant interaction between two two-level atoms and m- electromagnetic modes in a cavity is considered. Entanglement dynamics between two atoms is examined. In particular we compare dynamical variations for different cavity modes as well as for different cavity photon numbers. The collapse and revival of entanglement is exhibited by varying the atom-photon interaction times.
We numerically demonstrate that "mode-entangled states" based on the transverse modes of classical optical fields in multimode waveguides violate Bell's inequality. Numerically simulating the correlation measurement scheme of Bell's inequality, we obtain the normalized correlation functions of the intensity fluctuations for the two entangled classical fields. By using the correlation functions, the maximum violations of Bell's inequality are obtained. This implies that the two classical fields in the mode-entangled states, although spatially separated, present a nonlocal correlation.
Phase-sensitive optical parametric amplification of squeezed states helps to overcome detection loss and noise and thus increase the robustness of sub-shot-noise sensing. Because such techniques, e.g., imaging and spectroscopy, operate with multimode light, multimode amplification is required. Here we find the optimal methods for multimode phase-sensitive amplification and verify them in an experiment where a pumped second-order nonlinear crystal is seeded with a Gaussian coherent beam. Phase-sensitive amplification is obtained by tightly focusing the seed into the crystal, rather than seeding…
We present a method for computing the action of conditional linear optical transformations, conditioned on photon counting, for arbitrary signal states. The method is based on the Q-function, a quasi probability distribution for anti normally ordered moments. We treat an arbitrary number of signal and ancilla modes. The ancilla modes are prepared in an arbitrary product number state. We construct the conditional, non unitary, signal transformations for an arbitrary photon number count on each of the ancilla modes.
We discuss mode-entangled states based on the optical transverse modes of the optical field propagating in multi-mode waveguides, which are classical analogs of the quantum entangled states. The analogs are discussed in detail, including the violation of the Bell inequality and the correlation properties of optical pulses' group delays. The research on these analogs may be important, for it not only provides useful insights into fundamental features of quantum entanglement, but also yields new insights into quantum computation and quantum communication.
We investigate the coupling efficiency of parametric downconversion light (PDC) into single and multi-mode optical fibers as a function of the pump beam diameter, crystal length and walk-off. We outline two different theoretical models for the preparation and collection of either single-mode or multi-mode PDC light (defined by, for instance, multi-mode fibers or apertures, corresponding to bucket detection). Moreover, we define the mode-matching collection efficiency, important for realizing a single-photon source based on PDC output into a well-defined single spatial mode. We also define a mu…
We present a detailed analysis of the multimode quantum state embedded in an optical frequency comb generated by a Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator (SPOPO). The full covariance matrix of the state is obtained with homodyne detection where the local oscillator is spectrally controlled with pulse shaping techniques. The resulting matrix reveals genuine multipartite entanglement. Additionally, the beam is comprised of several independent eigenmodes that correspond to specific pulse shapes. The experimental data is confirmed with numerical simulations. Finally, the potential to c…
We propose a Raman quantum memory scheme that uses several atomic ensembles to store and retrieve the multimode highly entangled state of an optical quantum frequency comb, such as the one produced by parametric down-conversion of a pump frequency comb. We analyse the efficiency and the fidelity of such a quantum memory. Results show that our proposal may be helpful to multimode information processing using the different frequency bands of an optical frequency comb.
Using continuous wave superposition of spatial modes, we demonstrate experimentally displacement measurement of a light beam below the standard quantum limit. Multimode squeezed light is obtained by mixing a vacuum squeezed beam and a coherent beam that are spatially orthogonal. Although the resultant beam is not squeezed, it is shown to have strong internal spatial correlations. We show that the position of such a light beam can be measured using a split detector with an increased precision compared to a classical beam. This method can be used to improve the sensitivity of small displacement …
Quantum Teleportation, the transfer of the state of one quantum system to another without direct interaction between both systems, is an important way to transmit information encoded in quantum states and to generate quantum correlations (entanglement) between remote quantum systems. So far, for photons, only superpositions of two distinguishable states (one ``qubit'') could be teleported. Here we show how to teleport a ``qudit'', i.e. a superposition of an arbitrary number $d$ of distinguishable states present in the orbital angular momentum of a single photon using $d$ beam splitters and $d$…
The quantum nature of the state of a bosonic quantum field manifests itself in its entanglement, coherence, or optical nonclassicality which are each known to be resources for quantum computing or metrology. We provide quantitative and computable bounds relating entanglement measures with optical nonclassicality measures. These bounds imply that strongly entangled states must necessarily be strongly optically nonclassical. As an application, we infer strong bounds on the entanglement that can be produced with an optically nonclassical state impinging on a beam splitter. For Gaussian states, we…
We propose an experimental scheme to generate, in a heralded fashion, arbitrary quantum superpositions of two-mode optical states with a fixed total photon number $n$ based on weakly squeezed two-mode squeezed state resources (obtained via weak parametric down conversion), linear optics, and photon detection. Arbitrary $d$-level (qudit) states can be created this way where $d=n+1$. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate our scheme for $n=2$. The resulting qutrit states are characterized via optical homodyne tomography. We also discuss possible extensions to more than two modes concluding t…
A recently developed technique for the system--and--bath quantization of open optical cavities is applied to three resonator geometries: A one dimensional dielectric, a Fabry--Perot resonator, and a dielectric disk. The system--and--bath Hamiltonian for these geometries is derived starting from Maxwell's equations and employed to compute the electromagnetic fields, the resonances, and the cavity gain factors. Exact agreement is found with standard quantization methods based on a modes--of--the--universe description. Our analysis provides a microscopic justification for the system--and--bath qu…
Manipulation of qudits in optical tables is a difficult and nonscalable task. The use of integrated optical circuits opens new possibilities for the generation, manipulation, and characterization of high dimensional states besides the ease of transmission of these states through an optical fiber. In this work we propose photonic circuits to perform minimum quantum state tomography of path qudits and show how to determine all the constituents parameters of these circuits (beam splitters and phase shifters). Our strategies were based on the symmetries of the involved POVMs (positive operator-val…
Multimode entanglement is quintessential for the design and fabrication of quantum networks, which play a central role in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. However, an experimental setup is generally constructed with a specific network configuration in mind and therefore exhibits reduced versatility and scalability. The present work demonstrates an on-demand, reconfigurable quantum network simulator, using an intrinsically multimode quantum resource and a homodyne detection apparatus. Without altering either the initial squeezing source or experimen- tal architecture, we re…
We report on the observation of multimode strong coupling of a small ensemble of atoms interacting with the field of a 30-m long fiber resonator containing a nanofiber section. The collective light--matter coupling strength exceeds the free spectral range and the atoms couple to consecutive longitudinal resonator modes. The measured transmission spectra of the coupled atom-resonator system provide evidence of this regime, realized with a few hundred atoms with an intrinsic single-atom cooperativity of 0.26. These results are the starting point for studies in a new setting of light-matter inter…
The probabilistic nature of single-photon sources and photon-photon interactions encourages encoding as much quantum information as possible in every photon for the purpose of photonic quantum information processing. Here, by encoding high-dimensional units of information (qudits) in time and frequency degrees of freedom using on-chip sources, we report deterministic two-qudit gates in a single photon with fidelities exceeding 0.90 in the computational basis. Constructing a two-qudit modulo SUM gate, we generate and measure a single-photon state with non-separability between time and frequency…
Defining a computational basis of pseudo-number states, we interpret a coherent state of large amplitude, $|α|\gg\frac{d}{2π}$, as a qudit --- a $d$-level quantum system --- in a state that is an even superposition of $d$ pseudo-number states. A pair of such coherent-state qudits can be prepared in maximally entangled state by generalized Controlled-$Z$ operation that is based on cross-Kerr nonlinearity, which can be weak for large $d$. Hence, a coherent-state optical qudit cluster state can be prepared by repetitive application of the generalized Controlled-$Z$ operation to a set of coherent …
We show that a class of multimode optical transformations that employ linear optics plus two-mode squeezing can be expressed as SU(1,1) operators. These operations are relevant to state-of-the-art continuous variable quantum information experiments including quantum state sharing, quantum teleportation, and multipartite entangled states. Using this SU(1,1) description of these transformations, we obtain a new basis for such transformations that lies in a useful representation of this group and lies outside the often-used restriction to Gaussian states. We analyze this basis, show its applicati…
We demonstrate two approaches for unbalanced interferometers as time-bin qubit analyzers for quantum communication, robust against mode distortions and polarization effects as expected from free-space quantum communication systems including wavefront deformations, path fluctuations, pointing errors, and optical elements. Despite strong spatial and temporal distortions of the optical mode of a time-bin qubit, entangled with a separate polarization qubit, we verify entanglement using the Negative Partial Transpose, with the measured visibility of up to 0.85$\pm$0.01. The robustness of the analyz…
We experimentally perform the simulation of open quantum dynamics in single-qudit systems. Using a spatial light modulator as a dissipative optical device, we implement dissipative-dynamical maps onto qudits encoded in the transverse momentum of spontaneous parametric down-converted photon pairs. We show a well-controlled technique to prepare entangled qudits states as well as to implement dissipative local measurements; the latter realize two specific dynamics: dephasing and amplitude damping. Our work represents a new analogy-dynamical experiment for simulating an open quantum system.
We develop a multimode theory of direct homodyne measurements of quantum optical quasidistribution functions. We demonstrate that unbalanced homodyning with appropriately shaped auxiliary coherent fields allows one to sample point-by-point different phase space representations of the electromagnetic field. Our analysis includes practical factors that are likely to affect the outcome of a realistic experiment, such as non-unit detection efficiency, imperfect mode matching, and dark counts. We apply the developed theory to discuss feasibility of observing a loophole-free violation of Bell's ineq…
Linear optics is a promising alternative for the realization of quantum computation protocols due to the recent advancements in integrated photonic technology. In this context usually qubit based quantum circuits are considered, however, photonic systems naturally allow also for d-ary, i.e., qudit based, algorithms. This work investigates qudits defined by the possible photon number states of a single photon in d > 2 optical modes. We demonstrate how to construct locally optimal non-deterministic many-qudit gates using linear optics and photon number resolving detectors, and explore the use of…
We experimentally demonstrate the storage of 1060 temporal modes onto a thulium-doped crystal using an atomic frequency comb (AFC). The comb covers 0.93 GHz defining the storage bandwidth. As compared to previous AFC preparation methods (pulse sequences i.e. amplitude modulation), we only use frequency modulation to produce the desired optical pumping spectrum. To ensure an accurate spectrally selective optical pumping, the frequency modulated laser is self-locked on the atomic comb. Our approach is general and should be applicable to a wide range of rare-earth doped material in the context of…
We develop a universal approach enabling the study of any multimode quantum optical system evolving under a quadratic Hamiltonian. Our strategy generalizes the standard symplectic analysis and permits the treatment of multimode systems even in situations where traditional theoretical methods cannot be applied. This enables the description and investigation of a broad variety of key-resources for experimental quantum optics, ranging from optical parametric oscillators, to silicon-based micro-ring resonator, as well as opto-mechanical systems.
We report on a novel pseudothermal light source based on laser light coupled into an optical multimode fiber. The setup is simple, of low cost, exhibits inherently high directional light emission and allows for a flexible arrangement. By measuring the photon statistics and spatial two point intensity correlations in the far field we show that the setup exhibits all characteristics of a gaussian random source.

Long-distance quantum communication through optical fibers is currently limited to a few hundreds of kilometres due to fiber losses. Quantum repeaters could extend this limit to continental distances. Most approaches to quantum repeaters require highly multimode quantum memories in order to reach high communication rates. The atomic frequency comb memory scheme can in principle achieve high temporal multimode storage, without sacrificing memory efficiency. However, previous demonstrations have been hampered by the difficulty of creating high-resolution atomic combs, which reduces the efficienc…
Multimode nonclassical states of light are an essential resource in quantum computation with continuous variables, for example in cluster state computation. They can be generated either by mixing different squeezed light sources using linear optical operations, or directly in a multimode optical device. In parallel, frequency combs are perfect tools for high precision metrological applications and for quantum time transfer. Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillators (SPOPOs) have been theoretically shown to produce multimode non-classical frequency combs. In this paper, we present the…
Deep optical lattices are considered, in each site of which there are many Bose-condensed atoms. By the resonant modulation of trapping potentials it is possible to transfer a macroscopic portion of atoms to the collective nonlinear states corresponding to topological coherent modes. Entanglement can be generated between these modes. By varying the resonant modulating field it is possible to effectively regulate entanglement production in this multimode multitrap system of Bose condensates.
We demonstrate the coherent transduction of quantum noise reduction, or squeezed light, by Ag localized surface plasmons (LSPs). Squeezed light, generated through four-wave-mixing in Rb vapor, is coupled to a Ag nanohole array designed to exhibit LSP-mediated extraordinary-optical transmission (EOT) spectrally coincident with the squeezed light source at 795 nm. We demonstrate that quantum noise reduction as a function of transmission is found to match closely with linear attenuation models, thus demonstrating that the photon-LSP-photon transduction process is coherent near the LSP resonance.
We discuss the possible cooling of different phonon modes via three wave mixing interactions of vibrational and optical modes. Since phonon modes exhibit a variety of dispersion relations or frequency spectra with diverse spatial structures, depending on the shape and size of the sample, we formulate our theory in terms of relevant spatial mode functions for the interacting fields in any given geometry. We discuss the possibility of Dicke like collective effects in phonon cooling and present explicit results for simultaneous cooling of two phonon modes via the anti-Stokes up conversions. We sh…
