We develop a universal approach enabling the study of any multimode quantum optical system evolving under a quadratic Hamiltonian. Our strategy generalizes the standard symplectic analysis and permits the treatment of multimode systems even in situations where traditional theoretical methods cannot be applied. This enables the description and investigation of a broad variety of key-resources for experimental quantum optics, ranging from optical parametric oscillators, to silicon-based micro-ring resonator, as well as opto-mechanical systems.
We report on a novel pseudothermal light source based on laser light coupled into an optical multimode fiber. The setup is simple, of low cost, exhibits inherently high directional light emission and allows for a flexible arrangement. By measuring the photon statistics and spatial two point intensity correlations in the far field we show that the setup exhibits all characteristics of a gaussian random source.
Long-distance quantum communication through optical fibers is currently limited to a few hundreds of kilometres due to fiber losses. Quantum repeaters could extend this limit to continental distances. Most approaches to quantum repeaters require highly multimode quantum memories in order to reach high communication rates. The atomic frequency comb memory scheme can in principle achieve high temporal multimode storage, without sacrificing memory efficiency. However, previous demonstrations have been hampered by the difficulty of creating high-resolution atomic combs, which reduces the efficienc…
Multimode nonclassical states of light are an essential resource in quantum computation with continuous variables, for example in cluster state computation. They can be generated either by mixing different squeezed light sources using linear optical operations, or directly in a multimode optical device. In parallel, frequency combs are perfect tools for high precision metrological applications and for quantum time transfer. Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillators (SPOPOs) have been theoretically shown to produce multimode non-classical frequency combs. In this paper, we present the…
Silica nanofibers fabricated by tapering optical fibers have attracted considerable interest as an ultimate platform for high-efficiency light-matter interactions. While previously demonstrated applications relied exclusively on the low-loss transmission of only the fundamental mode, the implementation of multimode tapers that adiabatically transmit several modes has remained very challenging, hindering their use in various emerging applications in multimode nonlinear optics and quantum optics. Here, we report the first realization of multimode submicron tapers that permit the simultaneous adi…
We discuss the possible cooling of different phonon modes via three wave mixing interactions of vibrational and optical modes. Since phonon modes exhibit a variety of dispersion relations or frequency spectra with diverse spatial structures, depending on the shape and size of the sample, we formulate our theory in terms of relevant spatial mode functions for the interacting fields in any given geometry. We discuss the possibility of Dicke like collective effects in phonon cooling and present explicit results for simultaneous cooling of two phonon modes via the anti-Stokes up conversions. We sh…
Disorder and scattering in photonic systems have long been considered a nuisance that should be circumvented. Recently, disorder has been harnessed for a rapidly growing number of applications, including imaging, sensing and spectroscopy. The chaotic dynamics and extreme sensitivity to external perturbations make random media particularly well-suited for optical cryptography. However, using random media for distribution of secret keys between remote users still remains challenging, since it requires the users have access to the same scattering system. Here we utilize random mode mixing in mult…
We study the coherence characteristics of light propagating in nonlinear graded-index multimode fibers after attaining optical thermal equilibrium conditions. The role of optical temperature on the spatial mutual coherence function and the associated correlation area is systematically investigated. In this respect, we show that the coherence properties of the field at the output of a multimode nonlinear fiber can be controlled through its optical thermodynamic properties.
Few-photon transport via waveguide-coupled local quantum systems has attracted extensive theoretical and experimental studies. Most of the study has focused on atomic or atomic-like local quantum systems due to their strong light-matter interaction useful for quantum applications. Here, we study few-photon transport via a waveguide-coupled multimode optical cavity with second-order bulk nonlinearity. We develop a Feynman diagram approach and compute the scattering matrix of the one- and two-photon transport. Based on the calculated scattering matrix, we show highly nonclassical photonic effect…
In this work, we unveil the unique complex dynamics of multimode soliton interactions in graded-index optical fibers through simulations and experiments. By generating two multimode solitons from the fission of an input femtosecond pulse, we examine the evolution of their Raman-induced red-shift when the input pulse energy grows larger. Remarkably, we find that the output red-shift of the trailing multimode soliton may be reduced, so that it accelerates until it collides with the leading multimode soliton. As a result of the inelastic collision, a significant energy transfer occurs between the…
Quantum memory is a fundamental building block for large-scale quantum networks. On-demand optical storage with a large bandwidth, a high multimode capacity and an integrated structure simultaneously is crucial for practical application. However, this has not been demonstrated yet. Here, we fabricate an on-chip waveguide in a $\mathrm {^{151}Eu^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5}$ crystal with insertion losses of 0.2 dB, and propose a novel pumping scheme to enable spin-wave atomic frequency comb (AFC) storage with a bandwidth of 11 MHz inside the waveguide. Based on this, we demonstrate the storage of 200 tempora…
Dynamical encircling exceptional point(EP) shows a number of intriguing physical phenomena and its potential applications. To enrich the manipulations of optical systems in experiment, here, we study the dynamical encircling EP, i.e. state transfer process, in largely detuned multimode optomechanical system. The process of state transfer has been investigated with different factors about the location of start point, the orientation and the initial state of the trajectories around the EP in parameter space. Results show that the nonreciprocal and the chiral topological energy transfer between t…
We proposed the method of the optical fiber modal decomposition of the radiation propagating in a multimode optical fiber with a step like refractive index profile. The field distribution at the output end of the fiber was used. The method is based on the field decomposition by non-orthogonal modes. The full complex expansion coefficients of the light field were calculated for theoretical data.

The optomechanical system used here possesses multi-optical modes and a mechanical mode. Optomechanical induced transparency and absorption, appear in the system due to the interference between different paths. The system can present significant nonreciprocity and routing properties when appropriate parameters of the system are set. We design quantum …
We experimentally study polarization dynamics of Kerr beam self-cleaning in a graded-index multimode optical fiber. We show that spatial beam cleaning is accompanied by nonlinear polarization rotation, and a substantial increase of the degree of linear polarization.
Electromagnetically induced transparency has great theoretical and experimental importance in many physics subjects, such as atomic physics, quantum optics, and more recent cavity optomechanics. Optical delay is the most prominent feature of electromagnetically induced transparency, and in cavity optomechanics optical delay is limited by mechanical dissipation rate of sideband-resolved mechanical modes. Here we demonstrate a cascaded optical transparency scheme by leveraging the parametric phonon-phonon coupling in a multimode optomechanical system, where a low damping mechanical mode in the u…
We demonstrate Optical-Resolution Photoacoustic Microscopy (OR-PAM), where the optical field is focused and scanned using Digital Phase Conjugation (DPC) through a multimode fiber. The focus is scanned across the field of view using digital means, and the acoustic signal induced is collected by a transducer. Optical-resolution photoacoustic images of a knot made by two absorptive wires are obtained and we report on resolution smaller than 1.5μm across a 201μm by 201μm field of view. The use of a multimode optical fiber for the optical excitation part can pave the way for miniature endoscopes t…
Building on the scientific understanding and technological infrastructure of single-mode fibers, multimode fibers are being explored as a means of adding new degrees of freedom to optical technologies such as telecommunications, fiber lasers, imaging, and measurement. Here, starting from a baseline of single-mode nonlinear fiber optics, we introduce the growing topic of multimode nonlinear fiber optics. We demonstrate a new numerical solution method for the system of equations that describes nonlinear multimode propagation, the generalized multimode nonlinear Schrodinger equation. This numeric…
We present a general theory of thermalization of light in multimode optical fibers, including optical beams with nonzero orbital angular momentum or vortex beams. A generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution of asymptotic mode composition is obtained, based on the conservation of the angular momentum. We confirm our predictions by numerical simulations and experiments based on holographic mode decomposition of multimode beams. This establishes new constraints for the achievement of spatial beam self-cleaning, giving previously unforeseen insights into the underlying physical mechanisms.
The intimate interaction between phase-matched parametric amplification and strong nonlinear mode coupling in a multimode optical fiber results in a saturable spatial mode conversion that appears to violate the conservation of momentum. We investigate, by theory and experiment, this new regime of strong nonlinear interaction in multimode optical fibers and show that the appearance of the non-conservation of linear momentum is merely a clever sleight of hand by nature. This novel saturable mode conversion can potentially be used in a variety of applications including the generation of exotic qu…
We demonstrate optomechanical interference in a multimode system, in which an optical mode couples to two mechanical modes. A phase-dependent excitation-coupling approach is developed, which enables the observation of constructive and destructive optomechanical interferences. The destructive interference prevents the coupling of the mechanical system to the optical mode, suppressing optically-induced mechanical damping. These studies establish optomechanical interference as an essential tool for controlling the interactions between light and mechanical oscillators.
We experimentally demonstrate the conversion of a Gaussian beam to an approximate Bessel-Gauss mode by making use of a non-collinear four-wave mixing process in hot atomic vapor. The presence of a strong, spatially non-Gaussian pump both converts the probe beam into a non-Gaussian mode, and generates a conjugate beam that is in a similar non-Gaussian mode. The resulting probe and conjugate modes are compared to the output of a Gaussian beam incident on an annular aperture that is then spatially filtered according to the phase-matching conditions imposed by the four-wave mixing process. We find…
We present a detailed study of photon-pair generation in a multimode optical fiber via nonlinear four-wave mixing and intermodal phase-matching. We show that in multimode optical fibers, it is possible to generate correlated photon pairs in different fiber modes with large spectral shifts from the pump wavelength, such that the photon pairs are immune to contamination from spontaneous Raman scattering and residual pump photons. We also show that it is possible to generate factorable two-photon states exhibiting minimal spectral correlations between the photon pair components in conventional mu…
We experimentally realize an optical fiber ring resonator that includes a tapered section with subwavelength-diameter waist. In this section, the guided light exhibits a significant evanescent field which allows for efficient interfacing with optical emitters. A commercial tunable fiber beam splitter provides simple and robust coupling to the resonator. Key parameters of the resonator such as its out-coupling rate, free spectral range, and birefringence can be adjusted. Thanks to the low taper- and coupling-losses, the resonator exhibits an unloaded finesse of F=75+/-1, sufficient for reaching…
Multimode optical fibers has emerged as the platform that will bridge the gap between nonlinear optics in bulk media and in single-mode fibers. However, the understanding of the transition between these two research fields still remains incomplete despite numerous investigations of intermodal nonlinear phenomena and spatiotemporal coupling. Some of the striking phenomena observed in bulk media with ultrashort and ultra-intense pulses (i.e., conical emission, harmonic generation and light bullets) require a deeper insight to be possibly unveiled in multimode fibers. Here we generalize the conce…
In this paper, we numerically investigate the process of beam self-cleaning in a graded-index multimode optical fiber, by using the coupled-mode model. We introduce various models of random linear coupling between spatial modes, including coupling between all modes, or only between degenerate ones, and investigate the effects of random mode coupling on the beam self-cleaning process. The results of numerical investigations are in complete agreement with our experimental data.
To manipulate cold atoms in spatially constrained quantum engineering platforms, we developed a lensless optical system with a $\sim$1 $μ$m resolution and a transverse size of only 225 $μ$m. We use a multimode optical fiber with a high numerical aperture, which directly guides light inside the ultra-high-vacuum system. Spatial light modulators allow us to generate control beams at the in-vacuum fiber end by digital optical phase conjugation. As a demonstration, we use this system to optically transport cold atoms towards the in-vacuum fiber end, to load them in optical microtraps and to re-coo…
We report on the generation of a Raman cascade spanning the wavelength range of 523 to 1750 nm wavelength range, in a standard telecommunication graded-index multimode optical fiber. Despite the highly multimode nature of the pump, the Raman peaks are generated in specific modes of the fiber, confirming substantial beam cleanup during the stimulated Raman scattering process.
We developed an ultra-compact high-resolution imaging system for cold atoms. Its only in-vacuum element is a multimode optical fiber with a diameter of $230\,μ$m, which simultaneously collects light and guides it out of the vacuum chamber. External adaptive optics allow us to image cold Rb atoms with a $\sim 1\,μ$m resolution over a $100 \times 100\,μ$m$^2$ field of view. These optics can be easily rearranged to switch between fast absorption imaging and high-sensitivity fluorescence imaging. This system is particularly suited for hybrid quantum engineering platforms where cold atoms are combi…

Soliton microcombs -- phase-locked microcavity frequency combs -- have become the foundation of several classical technologies in integrated photonics, including spectroscopy, LiDAR, and optical computing. Despite the predicted multimode entanglement across the comb, experimental study of the quantum optics of the soliton microcomb has been elusive. In this work, we use second-order photon correlations to study the underlying quantum processes of soliton microcombs in an integrated silicon carbide microresonator. We show that a stable temporal lattice of solitons can isolate a multimode below-…
A detailed investigation of the nonlinear multimodal interference in a short graded-index multimode optical fiber is presented. The analysis is performed for a specific device geometry, where the light is coupled in and out of the multimode fiber via single-mode fibers. The same device geometry was recently used to obtain ultra-low-loss coupling between two single-mode optical fibers with very different mode-field diameters. Our results indicate the potential application of this simple geometry for nonlinear devices, such as in nonlinear switching, optical signal processing, or as saturable ab…
We show experimentally that parametric interaction can induce a cooperative oscillation of non simultaneously resonant transverse modes in an optical parametric oscillator. More generally, this effect is expected to occur in any spatially extended system subjected to boundary conditions where nonlinear wave mixing of two nonresonant spatial modes can generate a resonant oscillation.
With advanced micro- and nano-photonic structures, the vacuum photon-photon coupling rate is anticipated to approach the intrinsic loss rate and lead to unconventional quantum effects. Here, we investigate the classical-to-quantum transition of such photonic nonlinear systems using the quantum cluster-expansion method, which addresses the computational challenge in tracking large photon number states of the fundamental and harmonic optical fields involved in the second harmonic generation process. Compared to the mean-field approximation used in weak coupling limit, the quantum cluster-expansi…
The use of individual multimode optical fibers in endoscopy applications has the potential to provide highly miniaturized and noninvasive probes for microscopy and optical micromanipulation. A few different strategies have been proposed recently, but they all suffer from intrinsically low resolution related to the low numerical aperture of multimode fibers. Here, we show that two-photon polymerization allows for direct fabrication of micro-optics components on the fiber end, resulting in an increase of the numerical aperture to a value that is close to 1. Coupling light into the fiber through …
The quest for ever higher information capacities has brought about a renaissance in multimode optical waveguide systems. This resurgence of interest has recently initiated a flurry of activities in nonlinear multimode fiber optics. The sheer complexity emerging from the presence of a multitude of nonlinearly interacting modes has led not only to new opportunities in observing a host of novel optical effects that are otherwise impossible in single-mode settings, but also to new theoretical challenges in understanding their collective dynamics. In this Article, we present a consistent thermodyna…
Research on multimode optical fibers is arousing a growing interest, for their capability to transport high-power laser beams, coupled with novel nonlinear optics-based applications. However, when beam intensities exceed a certain critical value, optical fiber breakdown associated with irreversible modifications of their refractive index occurs, triggered by multiphoton absorption. These processes have been largely exploited for fiber material microstructuration. Here we show that, for intensities slightly below the breakdown threshold, nonlinear absorption strongly affects the dynamics of a p…
We show that, in general, any complex weakly nonlinear highly multimode system can reach thermodynamic equilibrium that is characterized by a unique temperature and chemical potential. The conditions leading to either positive or negative temperatures are explicitly obtained in terms of the linear spectrum of the system, the input power, and the corresponding Hamiltonian invariant. Pertinent examples illustrating these results are provided in various scenarios.
A wavelength-tunable Optical Fiber Tweezer (OFT) based on a Graded Index Multimode Fiber (GIMF) with a flat endface is proposed. It is shown that the design can support a trapping position which is far from the tip of the GIMF compared with other common optical tweezing methods, hence reducing the possibility of a contact between the trapped particle and the fiber tip. Moreover, because of the wavelength dependence of the GIMF design parameters such the Numerical Aperture (NA), the trapping position can become wavelength-dependent. Therefore, the trapping position can be tuned over a long rang…
We present an ultra-thin hybrid imaging system based on an optical multimode fiber (MMF) and an optical fiber hydrophone that combines optical resolution photoacoustic and fluorescence microscopy. To control the illumination at the distal tip of the MMF, a digital micromirror device modulates the amplitude of the optical wavefront which is coupled into the MMF. A set of pre-calibrated speckle illuminations combined with a reconstruction algorithm enables photoacoustic and fluorescence imaging of samples located at the distal tip of the fiber with optical resolution determined by the numerical …
We report on a method to obtain confocal imaging through multimode fibers using optical correlation. First, we measure the fiber's transmission matrix in a calibration step. This allows us to create focused spots at one end of the fiber by shaping the wavefront sent into it from the opposite end. These spots are scanned over a sample, and the light coming back from the sample via the fiber is optically correlated with the input pattern. We show that this achieves spatial selectivity in the detection. The technique is demonstrated on microbeads, a dried epithelial cell, and a cover glass.
Multimode fibers are attractive for a variety of applications such as internet data transfer, data center hubs, micromanipulation, optogenetics and other biomedical applications. A major hurdle for imaging through multimode fibers is the occurring scrambling, resulting in a randomization of light. Recently, clear imaging has been successfully accomplished using wavefront shaping, but the spatial information was transferred synchronously only. We demonstrate asynchronous information transmission using individual phase conjugations by employing only one spatial light modulator with multiple wind…
We study theoretically the generation of photon pairs with controlled spectral correlations via the four-wave mixing (FWM) process in graded-index multimode optical fibers (GIMFs). We show that the quantum correlations of the generated photons in GIMFs can be preserved over a wide spectral range for a tunable pump source. Therefore, GIMFs can be utilized as quantum-state-preserving tunable sources of photons. In particular, we have shown that it is possible to generate factorable two-photon states, which allow for heralding of single-photon pure-state photons without the need for spectral post…
We show that Kerr beam self-cleaning results from parametric mode mixing instabilities, that generate a number of nonlinearly interacting modes with randomized phases -- optical wave turbulence, followed by a direct and inverse cascade towards high mode numbers and condensation into the fundamental mode, respectively. This optical self-organization effect is analogue to wave condensation that is well-known in hydrodynamic 2D turbulence.
On-chip optical interconnect has been widely accepted as a promising technology to realize future large-scale multiprocessors. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) provides a new degree of freedom for optical interconnects to dramatically increase the link capacity. Present on-chip multimode devices are based on traditional wave-optics. Although large amount of computation and optimization are adopted to support more modes, mode-independent manipulation is still hard to be achieved due to severe mode dispersion. Here, we propose a universal solution to standardize the design of fundamental multimo…
A method is proposed to experimentally determine principal modes for mode division multiplexing in a multimode optical fiber, i.e., increasing optical fiber information capacity via higher-order transverse eigenmodes. Principal modes are a special linear combination of eigenmodes that do not exhibit mode dispersion up to first order in frequency. This method is based on an SU(N) representation of mode dispersion whereby the generators of the corresponding SU(N) Lie algebra, i.e., generalized Gell-Mann matrices, predict higher-order Stokes parameters which can be used to measure principal modes…
Multimode optical fibres are enjoying a renewed attention, boosted by the urgent need to overcome the current capacity crunch of single-mode fibre systems and by recent advances in multimode complex nonlinear optics [1-13]. In this work, we demonstrate that standard multimode fibres can be used as ultrafast all-optical tool for transverse beam manipulation of high power laser pulses. Our experimental data show that the Kerr effect in a graded-index multimode fibre is the driving mechanism for overcoming speckle distortions, leading to a somewhat counter-intuitive effect resulting in a spatiall…
Recently, we have showed a mechanism that could provide a great transmission enhancement of the light waves passed through subwavelength aperture arrays in thin metal films not by the plasmon-polariton waves, but by the constructive interference of diffracted waves (beams generated by the apertures) at the detector placed in the far-field zone. We now present a quantum reformulation of the model. The Hamiltonian describing the interference-induced enhancement of the intensity and energy of a multimode quantum optical field is derived. Such a field can be produced, for instance, by a subwavelen…
Solitons are non-dispersing localized waves that occur in diverse physical settings. A variety of optical solitons have been observed, but versions that involve both spatial and temporal degrees of freedom are rare. Optical fibers designed to support multiple transverse modes offer opportunities to study wave propagation in a setting that is intermediate between single-mode fiber and free-space propagation. Here we report the observation of optical solitons and soliton self-frequency shifting in graded-index multimode fiber. These wave packets can be modeled as multi-component solitons, or as …
Because of their massless nature, photons do not interact in linear optical media. However, light beam propagation in nonlinear media permits to break this paradigm, and makes it possible to observe photon-photon interactions. Based on this principle, a beam of light propagating in a nonlinear multimode optical system can be described as a gas of interacting particles. As a consequence, the spatio-temporal evolution of this photon gas is expressed in terms of macroscopic thermodynamic variables, e.g., temperature and chemical potential. Moreover, the gas evolution is subject to experiencing ty…
