Using continuous wave superposition of spatial modes, we demonstrate experimentally displacement measurement of a light beam below the standard quantum limit. Multimode squeezed light is obtained by mixing a vacuum squeezed beam and a coherent beam that are spatially orthogonal. Although the resultant beam is not squeezed, it is shown to have strong internal spatial correlations. We show that the position of such a light beam can be measured using a split detector with an increased precision compared to a classical beam. This method can be used to improve the sensitivity of small displacement measurements.
We present a numerical study on the super-resolution of quantum phase sensing and ghost imaging systems operating with multimode N00N states beyond the Rayleigh diffraction limit. Our computational simulations are based on the canonical quantization via numerical mode-decomposition (CQ-NMD) [1,2], in which normal (eigen) modes of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous dielectric media are numerically found using computational electromagnetics methods. In the CQ-NMD framework and the Heisenberg picture, the expectation value of arbitrary observables with respect to initial quantum states of va…
We developed an ultra-compact high-resolution imaging system for cold atoms. Its only in-vacuum element is a multimode optical fiber with a diameter of $230\,μ$m, which simultaneously collects light and guides it out of the vacuum chamber. External adaptive optics allow us to image cold Rb atoms with a $\sim 1\,μ$m resolution over a $100 \times 100\,μ$m$^2$ field of view. These optics can be easily rearranged to switch between fast absorption imaging and high-sensitivity fluorescence imaging. This system is particularly suited for hybrid quantum engineering platforms where cold atoms are combi…
A potential quantum internet would open up the possibility of realizing numerous new applications, including provably secure communication. Since losses of photons limit long-distance, direct quantum communication and widespread quantum networks, quantum repeaters are needed. The so-called PLOB-repeaterless bound [Pirandola et al., Nat. Commun. 8, 15043 (2017)] is a fundamental limit on the quantum capacity of direct quantum communication. Here, we analytically derive the quantum-repeater gain for error-corrected, one-way quantum repeaters based on higher-dimensional qudits for two different p…
Hyperentangled photonic states - exhibiting nonclassical correlations in several degrees of freedom - offer improved performance of quantum optical communication and computation schemes. Experimentally, a hyperentanglement of transverse-wavevector and spectral modes can be obtained in a straightforward way with multimode parametric single-photon sources. Nevertheless, experimental characterization of such states remains challenging. Not only single-photon detection with high spatial resolution - a single-photon camera - is required, but also a suitable mode-converter to observe the spectral/te…
Phase-sensitive optical parametric amplification of squeezed states helps to overcome detection loss and noise and thus increase the robustness of sub-shot-noise sensing. Because such techniques, e.g., imaging and spectroscopy, operate with multimode light, multimode amplification is required. Here we find the optimal methods for multimode phase-sensitive amplification and verify them in an experiment where a pumped second-order nonlinear crystal is seeded with a Gaussian coherent beam. Phase-sensitive amplification is obtained by tightly focusing the seed into the crystal, rather than seeding…

In this work quantum metrology techniques are applied to the imaging of objects with a non-uniform refractive spatial profile. A sensible improvement on the classical accuracy is shown to be found when the "Twin Beam State" (TWB) is used. In particular exploiting the multimode spatial correlation, naturally produced in the Parametric Down Conversion (PDC) process, allows a 2D reconstruction of complex spatial profiles, thus enabling an enhanced imaging. The idea is to use one of the spatially multimode beam to probe the sample and the other as a reference to reduce the noise. A similar model c…
Sorting spatial optical modes is a key challenge that underpins many applications from super-resolved imaging to high-dimensional quantum key distribution. However, to date implementations of optical mode sorters only operate on specific sets of modes, such as those carrying orbital angular momentum, and therefore lack versatility with respect to operation with an arbitrary spatial basis. Here, we demonstrate an arbitrary spatial mode sorter by harnessing the random mode mixing process occurring during light propagation in a multimode fibre by wavefront shaping. By measuring the transmission m…
Disorder and scattering in photonic systems have long been considered a nuisance that should be circumvented. Recently, disorder has been harnessed for a rapidly growing number of applications, including imaging, sensing and spectroscopy. The chaotic dynamics and extreme sensitivity to external perturbations make random media particularly well-suited for optical cryptography. However, using random media for distribution of secret keys between remote users still remains challenging, since it requires the users have access to the same scattering system. Here we utilize random mode mixing in mult…
Certification of nonlocality of quantum mechanics is an important fundamental test that typically requires prolonged data collection and is only revealed in an in-depth analysis. These features are often particularly exposed in hybrid systems, such as interfaces between light and atomic ensembles. Certification of entanglement from images acquired with single-photon camera can mitigate this issue by exploiting multiplexed photon generation. Here we demonstrate this feature in a quantum memory (QM) operating in a real-time feedback mode. Through spatially-multimode spin-wave storage the QM enab…
Non-classical correlations in optical beams offer the unprecedented opportunity of surpassing conventional limits of sensitivity and resolution in optical measurements and imaging, especially but not only, when a low photon flux down to the single photons are measured. We review the principles of quantum imaging and sensing techniques which exploit sub-Poissonian photon statistics and non-classical photon number correlation, presenting some state-of-the-art achievements in the field. These quantum photonics protocols have the potential to trigger major steps in many applications, such as micro…

Plenty of quantum information protocols are enabled by manipulation and detection of photonic spectro-temporal degrees of freedom via light-matter interfaces. While present implementations are well suited for high-bandwidth photon sources such as quantum dots, they lack the high resolution required for intrinsically narrow-band light-atom interactions. Here, we demonstrate far-field temporal imaging based on ac-Stark spatial spin-wave phase manipulation in a multimode gradient echo memory. We achieve spectral resolution of 20 kHz with MHz-level bandwidth and ultra-low noise equivalent to 0.023…
The transfer of quantum information through a noisy environment is a central challenge in the fields of quantum communication, imaging and nanophotonics. In particular, high-dimensional quantum states of light enable quantum networks with significantly higher information capacities and noise robustness as compared with qubits. However, although qubit entanglement has been distributed over large distances through free space and fibre, the transport of high-dimensional entanglement is hindered by the complexity of the channel, which encompasses effects such as free-space turbulence or mode mixin…
We present a wide-field multi-pass implementation of label-free imaging flow cytometry. Our technique is shown for high-speed flow imaging of ensembles of human red blood cells with up to four passes, demonstrating x4 enhancement in contrast and signal-to-noise. We show that our technique approaches close to the quantum limit of measurement sensitivity, extending the range of optimal imaging to samples in the weakly absorbing regime. This allows for near optimal imaging sensitivity and throughput in a practical scenario of imaging a dynamic sample under limited illumination intensity, surpassi…
We report the experimental observation of a spatio-temporal Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference of bi-photon states of extremely high Schmidt number. Two-photon interference of 1500 spatial modes and a total of more than 3x10^6 spatio-temporal modes is evidenced by measuring momentum spatial coincidences between the pixels of the far-field images of two strongly multimode spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) beams propagating through a HOM interferometer. The outgoing SPDC beams are recorded onto two separate detectors arrays operating in the photon-counting regime. The properties of HO…
