We study the quantum dynamics of a model for the single-spin measurement in magnetic-resonance force microscopy. We consider an oscillating driven cantilever coupled with the magnetic moment of the sample. Then, the cantilever is damped through an external bath and its readout is provided by a radiation field. Conditions for reliable measurements will be discussed.
We give a complete analysis of covariant measurements on two spins. We consider the cases of two parallel and two antiparallel spins, and we consider both collective measurements on the two spins, and measurements which require only Local Quantum Operations and Classical Communication (LOCC). In all cases we obtain the optimal measurements for arbitrary fidelities. In particular we show that if the aim is determine as well as possible the direction in which the spins are pointing, it is best to carry out measurements on antiparallel spins (as already shown by Gisin and Popescu), second best to…
In this thesis, we study about three subjects 1- Classical simulation of two spin-$s$ singlet correlations for all $s$ involving spin measurements, 2- Quantum correlations in successive single spin measurements, 3- Non locality without inequality for almost all two-qubit entangled states based on Cabello's non locality argument.
We analyze the physical meaning of a possible experiment aimed at the simultaneous measurement of two non-commuting spin components. We demonstrate that switching of a strong spin-orbit interaction, e.g., in a solid state or a cold-atom system, for a short period of time simulates a simultaneous von Neumann measurement of spin components, $σ_x$ and $σ_y$. By mapping spin dynamics onto coordinate-space motion, such a measurement determines time averages of $σ_x$ and $σ_y$ which, unlike their instantaneous values, may be evaluated simultaneously to an arbitrary accuracy.
Projective quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement is important for quantum technologies. Here we propose a method for constructing projective QND measurement on a nuclear spin via the measurement of an axillary electron spin in generic electron-nuclear spin systems coupled through weak hyperfine interaction. The key idea is to apply suitable quantum control on the electron to construct a weak QND measurement on the nuclear spin and then cascade a sequence of such measurements into a projective one. We identify a set of tunable parameters to select the QND observables and control the strength …
We simulate magnetic resonance force microscopy measurements of an entangled spin state. One of the entangled spins drives the resonant cantilever vibrations, while the other remote spin does not interact directly with the quasiclassical cantilever. The Schrödinger cat state of the cantilever reveals two possible outcomes of the measurement for both entangled spins.
In previous work, we have shown how the description of spin may be generalized and we have worked out this generalization for the cases spin 1/2 and spin 1. In this paper, we deal with the case of spin 2 and give the generalized probability amplitudes.
Fano resonances are proposed to perform a measurement of a spin state (whether it is up or down) of a single electron in a quantum dot via a spin-polarized current in an adjacent quantum wire. Rashba-like spin-orbit interaction in a quantum dot prohibits spin-flip events (Kondo-like phenomenon). That ensures the measurement to be non-demolishing.
We propose a physically reversible quantum measurement of an arbitrary spin-s system using a spin-j probe via an Ising interaction. In the case of a spin-1/2 system (s=1/2), we explicitly construct a reversing measurement and evaluate the degree of reversibility in terms of fidelity. The recovery of the measured state is pronounced when the probe has a high spin (j>1/2), because the fidelity changes drastically during the reversible measurement and the reversing measurement. We also show that the reversing measurement scheme for a spin-1/2 system can serve as an experimentally feasible approxi…
We propose a nuclear-spin-polarization protocol in a general evolution-and-measurement framework. The protocol works in a spin-star configuration, where the central spin is coupled to the surrounding bath (nuclear) spins by flip-flop interaction of equal strength and is subject to a sequence of projective measurements on its ground state. Then a nondeterministic nuclear spin polarization could be implemented by entropy reduction through measurement. The optimized measurement-interval $τ_{\rm opt}$ is analytically obtained in the near-resonant condition, which is relevant to the nuclear spins' …
Quantum correlation in two-qubit spin models is investigated by use of measurement-induced disturbance [S. Luo, Phys. Rev. A, 77(2008) 022301]. Its dependences on external magnetic field, spin-spin coupling, and Dzyaloshinski-Moriya (DM) interactions are presented in detail. We also compare measurement-induced disturbance and thermal entanglement in spin models and illustrate their different characteristics.
We consider the evaluation of the quantum discord and other related measures of quantum correlations in a system formed by a spin 1 and a complementary spin system. A characterization of general projective measurements in such system in terms of spin averages is thereby introduced, which allows to easily visualize their deviation from standard spin measurements. It is shown that the measurement optimizing these measures corresponds in general to a non-spin measurement. The important case of states that commute with the total $S_z$ spin parity is discussed in detail, and the general stationary …
We discuss two questions related to the concept of weak values as seen from the standard quantum-mechanics point of view. In the first part of the paper, we describe a scenario where unphysical results similar to those encountered in the study of weak values are obtained using a simple experimental setup that does not involve weak measurements. In the second part of the paper, we discuss the correct physical description, according to quantum mechanics, of what is being measured in a weak-value-type experiment.
We study repeated (noncontinuous) measurements on the electron spin in a quantum dot and find that the measurement technique may lead to a different met$ or mechanism to realize nuclear spin polarization. While it may be used in any case, the method is aimed at the further polarization, providing that nuclear spins have been polarized by the existent electrical or optical methods. The feasibility of the method is analyzed. The existing techniques in electron spin measurements are applicable to this scheme. The repeated measurements \emph{deform} the structures of the nuclear wave function and …
We give a first physical model for the quantum measurement of the spin direction. It is an Arthurs-Kelly model that involves a kind of magnetic-dipole interaction of the spin with three modes of radiation. We show that in a limit of infinite squeezing of radiation the optimal POVM for the measurement of the spin direction is achieved for spin 1/2.
We show that dynamics in spin-orbit coupling field simulates the von Neumann measurement of a particle spin. We demonstrate how the measurement influences the spin and coordinate evolution of a particle by comparing two examples of such a procedure. First example is a simultaneous measurement of spin components, $σ_{x}$ and $σ_{y}$, corresponding to non-commuting operators, which cannot be accurately obtained together at a given time instant due to the Heisenberg uncertainty ratio. By mapping spin dynamics onto a spatial walk such a procedure determines measurement-time averages of $σ_{x}$ and…
We study a continuous set of spin 1 measurements and show that for a special family of measurements parametrized by a single variable $θ$ the possibility of hidden-variable description is a discontinuous property.
We give a classical protocol to exactly simulate quantum correlations implied by a spin-$s$ singlet state for the infinite sequence of spins satisfying $(2s + 1) = 2^{n}$, in the worst-case scenario, where $n$ is a positive integer. The class of measurements we consider here are only those corresponding to spin observables. The required amount of communication is found to be $log_{2}d$ where $d = 2s + 1$ is the dimension of the spin-$s$ Hilbert space.
We propose an efficient method to protect spin squeezing under the action of amplitude-damping, depolarizing and phase-damping channels based on measurement reversal from weak measurement, and consider an ensemble of N independent spin-1/2 particles with exchange symmetry. We find that spin squeezing can be enhanced greatly under three different decoherence channels and spin-squeezing sudden death (SSSD) can be avoided undergoing amplitude damping and phase-damping channels.
A simple protocol for complete and deterministic Bell state measurement is proposed. It consists of measurements of nonlocal spin product operators with the help of shared entanglement as an ancillary resource. The protocol realizes not only nonlocal Bell state measurement between a pair of distant qubits but also a complete Bell filter that transmits either one of the Bell states indicated by the measurement outcome. These schemes will be useful in quantum technologies where nonlocal Bell state measurement is indispensable.
We propose a scheme for the quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of a single electron spin in a single quantum dot (QD). Analytical expressions are obtained for the optical Faraday effect between a quantum dot exciton and microcavity field. The feasibility of the QND measurement of a single electron spin is discussed for a GaAs/AlAs microcavity with an InAs QD.
We report the development of a fast pulse polarimeter for the application to quantum non-demolition measurement of atomic spin (Spin QND). The developed system was tunable to the atomic resonance of ytterbium atom and has narrow laser linewidth suitable for spin QND. Using the developed polarimeter, we successfully demonstrated the measurement of the vacuum noise, with 10^6 to 10^7 photon number per pulse.
Unsharp spin 1 observables arise from the fact that a residual uncertainty about the actual orientation of the measurement device remains. If the uncertainty is below a certain level, and if the distribution of measurement errors is covariant under rotations, a Kochen-Specker theorem for the unsharp spin observables follows: There are finite sets of directions such that not all the unsharp spin observables in these directions can consistently be assigned approximate truth-values in a non-contextual way.
Localized spins in the solid state are attracting widespread attention as highly sensitive quantum sensors with nanoscale spatial resolution and fascinating applications. Recently, adaptive measurements were used to improve the dynamic range for spin-based sensing of deterministic Hamiltonian parameters. Here we explore a very different direction -- spin-based adaptive sensing of random noises. First, we identify distinguishing features for the sensing of magnetic noises compared with the estimation of deterministic magnetic fields, such as the different dependences on the spin decoherence, th…
We study the time evolution of two electron spin states in a double quantum-dot system, which includes a nearby quantum point contact (QPC) as a measurement device. We obtain that the QPC measurement induced decoherence is in time scales of microsecond. We also find that the enhanced QPC measurement will trap the system in its initial spin states, which is consistent with quantum Zeno effect.

The retrodiction of spin measurements along a set of different axes is revisited in detail. The problem is presented in two different pictures, a geometric and a general algebraic one. Explicit measurement operators that allow the retrodiction are given for the case of three and four axes. For the Vaidman-Aharanov-Albert case of three orthogonal axes the quantum network is constructed for two different initial Bell states.
We demonstrate the role of measurement back-action of a coherent spin environment on the dynamics of a spin (qubit) coupled to it, by inducing non-classical (Quantum Random Walk like) statistics on its measurement trajectory. We show how the long-life time of the spin-bath allows it to correlate measurements of the qubit over many repetitions. We have used Nitrogen Vacancy centers in diamond as a model system, and the projective single-shot readout of the electron spin at low temperatures to simulate these effects. We show that the proposed theoretical model, explains the experimentally observ…
From the point of view of the information theory, a model of the collapse phenomena at the measurement of a spin 1/2 projection is developed. This model phenomenologically includes an observer. The model allows not only to determine the state of a system after the measurement but also to compute the state of the observer. The state of the observer is equivalent to the operator of a spin projection which the observer will measure at the next measurement.
We present a high-rate projective measurement-based approach for controlling non-unitary evolution of a quantum chain of interacting spins. In this approach, we demonstrate that local measurement of a single external spin coupled to the chain can produce a spin polaron, which remains stable after the end of the measurement. This stability results from the fact that the Hilbert space of the chain contains a subspace of non-decaying states, stable during the nonunitary evolution. These states determine the resulting final state of the chain and long-term shape of the polaron. In addition to form…
We investigate quantum violation of macrorealism for multilevel spin systems under the condition of coarsening of measurement times -- i.e., when measurement times have experimental indeterminacy. This is studied together with the effect of coarsening of measurement outcomes for which individual outcomes cannot be unambiguously discriminated. In our treatment, along with different measurement outcomes being clubbed together into two groups in order to model the coarsening of measurement outcomes, importantly, varying degrees of coarsening of measurement time intervals have also been considered…
A weak continuous quantum measurement of an atomic spin ensemble can be implemented via Faraday rotation of an off-resonance probe beam, and may be used to create and probe nonclassical spin states and dynamics. We show that the probe light shift leads to nonlinearity in the spin dynamics and limits the useful Faraday measurement window. Removing the nonlinearity allows a non-perturbing measurement on the much longer timescale set by decoherence. The nonlinear spin Hamiltonian is of interest for studies of quantum chaos and real-time quantum state estimation.
A joint measurement of two observables is a {\it simultaneous} measurement of both quantities upon the {\it same} quantum system. When two quantum-mechanical observables do not commute, then a joint measurement of these observables cannot be accomplished by projective measurements alone. In this paper we shall discuss the use of quantum cloning to perform a joint measurement of two components of spin associated with a qubit system. We introduce a cloning scheme which is optimal with respect to this task. This cloning scheme may be thought to work by cloning two components of spin onto its outp…
In this study, we give a new proposal to measure the temperature of the spin in a sample in magnetic resonance force microscopy system by using postselected weak measurement, and investigate the fisher information to estimate the precision of our scheme. We showed that in high temperature regime the temperature of the spin can be measured via weak measurement technique with proper postselection and our scheme able to increase the precision of temperature estimation.
We consider a hidden-variable theoretic description of successive measurements of non commuting spin observables on a input spin-s state. In this scenario, the hidden-variable theory leads to a Hardy-type argument that quantum predictions violate it. We show that the maximum probability of success of Hardy's argument in quantum theory is $(\frac{1}{2})^{4s}$, which is more than in the spatial case.
In this paper, effects of the regular measurements on a noisy channel has been investigated. The strategy introduced by A. Bayat, and Y. Omar [New J. Phys. 17, 103041 (2015)] is followed to suppress dephasing and dissipation effects in a noisy spin channel and generate long distance entanglement by global measurement on the channel. A regular global measurements performed on spin channel weakly coupled to the sender and receiver qubits via $XX$ interaction. This scheme is applied for the dephasing and dissipation in non-zero temperature processes separately and the results show that amounts of…
Correlation beyond entanglement is a subject of interest in quantum information. Here we have shown the existence of quantum correlation without entanglement in Heisenberg $XYZ$ spin model with external magnetic field, using different versions of measurement-induced nonlocality. However maximally entangled states are shown to possess maximum correlation.
We propose a technique to control the macroscopic collective nuclear spin of a Helium-3 vapor in the quantum regime using light. The scheme relies on metastability exchange collisions to mediate interactions between optically accessible metastable states and the ground-state nuclear spin, giving rise to an effective nuclear spin-light quantum nondemolition interaction of the Faraday form. Our technique enables measurement-based quantum control of nuclear spins, such as the preparation of spin-squeezed states. This, combined with the day-long coherence time of nuclear spin states in Helium-3, o…
Quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement of collective variables by off-resonant optical probing has the ability to create entanglement and squeezing in atomic ensembles. Until now, this technique has been applied to real or effective spin one-half systems. We show theoretically that the build-up of Raman coherence prevents the naive application of this technique to larger spin atoms, but that dynamical decoupling can be used to recover the ideal QND behavior. We experimentally demonstrate dynamical decoupling by using a two-polarization probing technique. The decoupled QND measurement achieve…
We investigate the quantum correlation in a qutrit-qubit mixed spin chain based on measurement-induced disturbance (MID) [S. Luo, Phys. Rev. A, 77, (2008) 022301]. We also compare MID and thermal entanglement measured by negativity and illustrate their different characteristics.
Ability to read-out the state of a single confined spin lies at the heart of solid-state quantum information processing. While all-optical spin measurements using Faraday rotation has been successfully implemented in ensembles of semiconductor spins, read-out of a single semiconductor spin has only been achieved using transport measurements based on spin-charge conversion. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical dispersive measurement of the spin-state of a single electron trapped in a semiconductor quantum dot. We obtain information on the spin state through conditional Faraday rotation of a spec…
We derive exact formulas describing an indirect von Neumann measurement of a spin-1 system. The results hold for any interaction strength and for an arbitrary output variable $\Hat{O}$.
Although there are several proposals of relativistic spin in the literature, the recognition of intrinsicality as a key characteristic for the definition of this concept is responsible for selecting a single tensor operator that adequately describes such a quantity. This intrinsic definition does not correspond to Wigner's spin operator, which is the definition that is widely adopted in the relativistic quantum information theory literature. Here, the differences between the predictions obtained considering the intrinsic spin and Wigner's spin are investigated. The measurements involving the i…
We analyze a recent protocol for the transmission of quantum states via a dual spin chain [Burgarth and Bose, Phys. Rev. A 71, 052315 (2005)] under the constraint that the receiver's measurement strength is finite. That is, we consider the channel where the ideal, instantaneous and complete von Neumann measurements are replaced with a more realistic continuous measurement. We show that for optimal performance the measurement strength must be "tuned" to the channel spin-spin coupling, and once this is done, one is able to achieve a similar transmission rate to that obtained with ideal measureme…
Total spin eigenstates can be used to intrinsically encode a direction, which can later be decoded by means of a quantum measurement. We study the optimal strategy that can be adopted if, as is likely in practical applications, only product states of $N$-spins are available. We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the average fidelity which provides a proof that the optimal states must be entangled. We also give a prescription for constructing finite measurements for general encoding eigenstates.
Joint, or simultaneous, measurements of non-commuting observables are possible within quantum mechanics, if one accepts an increase in the variances of the jointly measured observables. In this paper, we discuss joint measurements of a spin 1/2 particle along any two directions. Starting from an operational locality principle, it is shown how to obtain a bound on how sharp the joint measurement can be. We give a direct interpretation of this bound in terms of an uncertainty relation.
In a recent paper [A. Ahanj et al., quant-ph/0603053], we gave a classical protocol to simulate quantum correlations corresponding to the spin $s$ singlet state for the infinite sequence of spins satisfying $2s+1 = 2^{n}$. In the present paper, we have generalized this result by giving a classical protocol to exactly simulate quantum correlations implied by the spin-$s$ singlet state corresponding to all integer as well as half-integer spin values $s$. The class of measurements we consider here are only those corresponding to spin observables, as has been done in the above-mentioned paper. The…
We consider a pair of antiparallel spins polarized in a random direction to encode quantum information. We wish to extract as much information as possible on the polarization direction attainable by an unentangled measurement, i.e., by a measurement, whose outcomes are associated with product states. We develop analytically the upper bound 0.7935 bits to the Shannon mutual information obtainable by an unentangled measurement, which is definitely less than the value 0.8664 bits attained by an entangled measurement. This proves our main result, that not every ensemble of product states can be op…
Positive operator valued measures (POVMs) are presented that allow an unknown pure state of a spin-1 particle to be determined with optimal fidelity when 2 to 5 copies of that state are available. Optimal POVMs are also presented for a spin-3/2 particle when 2 or 3 copies of the unknown state are available. Although these POVMs are optimal they are not always minimal, indicating that there is room for improvement.
The accuracy of a measurement of the spin direction of a spin-s particle is characterised, for arbitrary half-integral s. The disturbance caused by the measurement is also characterised. The approach is based on that taken in several previous papers concerning joint measurements of position and momentum. As in those papers, a distinction is made between the errors of retrodiction and prediction. Retrodictive and predictive error relationships are derived. The POVM describing the outcome of a maximally accurate measurement process is investigated. It is shown that, if the measurement is retrodi…
In this note we discuss the effect of the unpolarized state in the spin-correlation measurement of the $^1S_0$ two-proton state produced in 12C(d,2He) reaction at the KVI, Groningen. We show that in the presence of the unpolarized state the maximal violation of the CHSH-Bell inequality is lower than the classical limit if the purity of the state is less than $ \sim \verb+70%+$. In particular, for the KVI experiment the violation of the CHSH-Bell inequality should be corrected by a factor $\sim\verb+10%+$ from the pure $^1S_0$ state.
It is generally believed that dispersive polarimetric detection of collective angular momentum in large atomic spin systems gives rise to: squeezing in the measured observable, anti-squeezing in a conjugate observable, and collective spin eigenstates in the long-time limit (provided that decoherence is suitably controlled). We show that such behavior only holds when the particles in the ensemble cannot be spatially distinguished-- even in principle-- regardless of whether the measurement is only sensitive to collective observables. While measuring a cloud of spatially-distinguishable spin-1/2 …
Positive operator valued measurements on a finite number of N identically prepared systems of arbitrary spin J are discussed. Pure states are characterized in terms of Bloch-like vectors restricted by a SU(2 J+1) covariant constraint. This representation allows for a simple description of the equations to be fulfilled by optimal measurements. We explicitly find the minimal POVM for the N=2 case, a rigorous bound for N=3 and set up the analysis for arbitrary N.
A distinguishing feature of protective measurement is the possibility of obtaining information about expectation values while making the disturbance of the initial state arbitrarily small. Quantifying this state disturbance is of paramount importance. Here we derive exact and perturbative expressions for the state disturbance and the faithfulness of the measurement outcome in a model describing a spin-1/2 particle protectively measured by an inhomogeneous magnetic field. We determine constraints on the experimentally required field strengths from bounds imposed on the allowable state disturban…
We demonstrate a weak continuous measurement of the pseudo-spin associated with the clock transition in a sample of Cs atoms. Our scheme uses an optical probe tuned near the D1 transition to measure the sample birefringence, which depends on the z-component of the collective pseudospin. At certain probe frequencies the differential light shift of the clock states vanishes and the measurement is non-perturbing. In dense samples the measurement can be used to squeeze the collective clock pseudo-spin, and has potential to improve the performance of atomic clocks and interferometers.
A promising technique for measuring single electron spins is magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM), in which a microcantilever with a permanent magnetic tip is resonantly driven by a single oscillating spin. If the quality factor of the cantilever is high enough, this signal will be amplified over time to the point that it can be detected by optical or other techniques. An important requirement, however, is that this measurement process occur on a time scale short compared to any noise which disturbs the orientation of the measured spin. We describe a model of spin noise for the MRFM syst…
