We study repeated (noncontinuous) measurements on the electron spin in a quantum dot and find that the measurement technique may lead to a different met$ or mechanism to realize nuclear spin polarization. While it may be used in any case, the method is aimed at the further polarization, providing that nuclear spins have been polarized by the existent electrical or optical methods. The feasibility of the method is analyzed. The existing techniques in electron spin measurements are applicable to this scheme. The repeated measurements \emph{deform} the structures of the nuclear wave function and can also serve as $\emph{gates}$ to manipulate nuclear spins.
Polarization transfers from an electron spin to a nuclear spin are essential for various physical tasks, such as dynamic nuclear polarization in nuclear magnetic resonance and quantum state transformations on hybrid electron-nuclear spin systems. We present time-optimal schemes for electron-nuclear polarization transfers which improve on conventional approaches and will have wide applications.
Dynamic nuclear polarization transfers spin polarization from electrons to nuclei. We have achieved this by a new method, simultaneously exciting transitions of electronic and nuclear spins. The efficiency of this technique improves with increasing magnetic field. Experimental results are shown for N@C60 with continuous-wave microwaves, which can be expected to produce even higher polarization than the corresponding pulsed techniques for electron spins greater than 1/2. The degree of nuclear polarization in this case can be easily monitored through the intensities of the well resolved hyperfin…
We report polarization of a dense nuclear-spin ensemble in diamond and its dependence on magnetic field and temperature. The polarization method is based on the transfer of electron spin polarization of negatively charged nitrogen vacancy color centers to the nuclear spins via the excited-state level anti-crossing of the center. We polarize 90% of the 14N nuclear spins within the NV centers, and 70% of the proximal 13C nuclear spins with hyperfine interaction strength of 13-14 MHz. Magnetic-field dependence of the polarization reveals sharp decrease in polarization at specific field values cor…
Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is used in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to transfer polarization from electron spins to nuclear spins. The resulting nuclear polarization enhancement can, in theory, be two or three orders of magnitude depending on the sample. In solid state systems, however, there are competing mechanisms of DNP, which, when occurring simultaneously, reduce the net polarization enhancement of the nuclear spin. We present a simple quantum description of DNP and apply optimal control theory (OCT) with an open quantum system framework to design pulses that select one DNP pr…
Highly sensitive nuclear spin detection is crucial in many scientific areas including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), imaging (MRI) and quantum computing. The tiny thermal nuclear spin polarization represents a major obstacle towards this goal which may be overcome by Dynamic Nuclear Spin Polarization (DNP) methods. The latter often rely on the transfer of the thermally polarized electron spins to nearby nuclear spins, which is limited by the Boltzmann distribution of the former. Here we demonstrate the polarization and read out of a nuclear spin bath consisting of $^{13}$C nucl…
I show that an experimental technique used in nuclear physics may be successfully applied to quantum teleportation (QT) of spin states of massive matter. A new non-local physical effect the `quantum-teleportation-effect' is discovered for the nuclear polarization measurement. Enhancement of the neutron polarization is expected in the proposed experiment for QT that discriminates {\it only} one of the Bell states.
We propose a nuclear-spin-polarization protocol in a general evolution-and-measurement framework. The protocol works in a spin-star configuration, where the central spin is coupled to the surrounding bath (nuclear) spins by flip-flop interaction of equal strength and is subject to a sequence of projective measurements on its ground state. Then a nondeterministic nuclear spin polarization could be implemented by entropy reduction through measurement. The optimized measurement-interval $τ_{\rm opt}$ is analytically obtained in the near-resonant condition, which is relevant to the nuclear spins' …
Understanding the joint dynamics of electron and nuclear spins is central to core concepts in solid-state magnetic resonance - such as spin-lattice relaxation and dynamic nuclear polarization - but a generalization that capitalizes on competing polarization loss and gain channels is still lacking. Here, we theoretically study the non-Hermitian dynamics of hybrid electron/nuclear spin systems in the simultaneous presence of electron spin pumping and spin-lattice relaxation. Focusing on periodic, one-dimensional chains, we find that by adjusting the electron spin pumping to a critical level, it …
We studied the dynamic nuclear spin polarization of nitrogen in negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond both experimentally and theoretically over a wide range of magnetic fields from 0 to 1100 G covering both the excited-state level anti-crossing and the ground-state level anti-crossing magnetic field regions. Special attention was paid to the less studied ground-state level anti-crossing region. The nuclear spin polarization was inferred from measurements of the optically detected magnetic resonance signal. These measurements show that a very large (up to $96 \pm 2\%$) nu…
A stimulated wave of polarization, which implements a simple mechanism of quantum amplification, is experimentally demonstrated in a chain of four J-coupled nuclear spins, irradiated by a weak radio-frequency transverse field. The "quantum domino" dynamics, a wave of flipped spins triggered by a flip of the first spin, has been observed in fully $^{13}$C-labeled sodium butyrate.
We report a versatile method to efficiently polarize single nuclear spins in diamond, which is based on optical pumping of a single NV color center and mediated by a level-anti crossing in its excited state. A nuclear spin polarization higher than 98% is achieved at room temperature for the 15N nuclear spin associated to the NV center, corresponding to $μ$K effective nuclear spin temperature. We then show simultaneous deterministic initialization of two nuclear spins (13C and 15N) in close vicinity to a NV defect. Such robust control of nuclear spin states is a key ingredient for further scali…
Most of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) has been requiring helium cryogenics and strong magnetic fields for a high degree of polarization. In this work, we instead demonstrate an optical hyperpolarization of naturally abundant $^{13}$C nuclei in a diamond crystal at a low magnetic field and an ambient temperature. It exploits continuous irradiations of pump laser for polarizing electron spins of nitrogen vacancy centers and microwave for transferring the induced polarization to $^{13}$C nuclear spins. Triplet structures corresponding to $^{14}$N hyperfine splitting were clearly observed in …
Precise knowledge of a quantum system's Hamiltonian is a critical pre-requisite for its use in many quantum information technologies. Here, we report a method for the precise characterization of the non-secular part of the excited-state Hamiltonian of an electronic-nuclear spin system in diamond. The method relies on the investigation of the dynamic nuclear polarization mediated by the electronic spin, which is currently exploited as a primary tool for initializing nuclear qubits and performing enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance. By measuring the temporal evolution of the population of the gr…
Optically-pumped color centers in semiconductor powders can potentially induce high levels of nuclear spin polarization in surrounding solids or fluids at or near ambient conditions, but complications stemming from the random orientation of the particles and the presence of unpolarized paramagnetic defects hinder the flow of polarization beyond the defect's host material. Here, we theoretically study the spin dynamics of interacting nitrogen-vacancy (NV) and substitutional nitrogen (P1) centers in diamond to show that outside protons spin-polarize efficiently upon a magnetic field sweep across…
Sharp threshold-like transitions between two stable nuclear spin polarizations are observed in optically pumped individual InGaAs self-assembled quantum dots embedded in a Schottky diode when the bias applied to the diode is tuned. The abrupt transitions lead to the switching of the Overhauser field in the dot by up to 3 Tesla. The bias-dependent photoluminescence measurements reveal the importance of the electron-tunneling-assisted nuclear spin pumping. We also find evidence for the resonant LO-phonon-mediated electron co-tunneling, the effect controlled by the applied bias and leading to the…
We investigate the dynamic nuclear polarization process by frequently injecting polarized electron spins into a quantum dot. Due to the suppression of the direct dipolar and indirect electron-mediated nuclear spin interactions, by the frequently injected electron spins, the analytical predictions under the independent spin approximation agree well with quantum numerical simulations. Our results show that the acquired nuclear polarization is highly inhomogeneous, proportional to the square of the local electron-nuclear hyperfine interaction constant, if the injection frequency is high. Utilizin…
We study the optically pumped nuclear spin polarization in a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in the quantum Hall system. We apply resistive detection via the contact hyperfine interaction, which provides high sensitivity and selectivity, to probe a small amount of polarized nuclear spins in a single well. The properties of the optical nuclear spin polarization are clearly observed. We theoretically discuss the nuclear spin dynamics accompanied with doped electrons to analyze the experimental data. The optical nuclear polarization spectra exhibit electron-spin-resolved lowest Landau level inter…
Electron transport in a new low-dimensional structure - the nuclear spin polarization induced quantum wire (NSPI QW) is theoretically studied. In the proposed system the local nuclear spin polarization creates the effective hyperfine field which confines the electrons with the spins opposite to the hyperfine field to the regions of maximal nuclear spin polarization. The influence of the nuclear spin relaxation and diffusion on the electron energy spectrum and on the conductance of the quantum wire is calculated and the experimental feasibility is discussed.
By applying a new technique for dynamic nuclear polarization involving simultaneous excitation of electronic and nuclear transitions, we have enhanced the nuclear polarization of the nitrogen nuclei in 15N@C60 by a factor of 1000 at a fixed temperature of 3 K and a magnetic field of 8.6 T, more than twice the maximum enhancement reported to date. This methodology will allow the initialization of the nuclear qubit in schemes exploiting N@C60 molecules as components of a quantum information processing device.
We demonstrate experimentally that a polarized nuclear spin modifies the dynamic behavior of a neighboring electronic spin. Specifically, an out-of-phase component appears in the electronic spin-echo signal. This component is proportional to the nuclear spin degree of polarization and strongly depends on the nuclear polarization direction. When the electronic spin is surrounded by a polarized nuclear spin bath, the spin-echo quadrature manifests a characteristic frequency related only to the nuclear spins abundance and their collective polarization. We use this analysis to propose a novel meas…
We use electric dipole spin resonance to measure dynamic nuclear polarization in InAs nanowire quantum dots. The resonance shifts in frequency when the system transitions between metastable high and low current states, indicating the presence of nuclear polarization. We propose that the low and the high current states correspond to different total Zeeman energy gradients between the two quantum dots. In the low current state, dynamic nuclear polarization efficiently compensates the Zeeman gradient due to the $g$-factor mismatch, resulting in a suppressed total Zeeman gradient. We present a the…
Several efforts have been made to polarize the nearby nuclear environment of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers for quantum metrology and quantum information applications. Different methods showed different nuclear spin polarization efficiencies and rely on electronic spin polarization associated to the NV center, which in turn crucially depends on the inter-system crossing. Recently, the rates involved in the inter-system crossing have been measured leading to different transition rate models. Here, we consider the effect of these rates on several nuclear polarization methods based on the level an…
We demonstrate dynamical nuclear spin polarization in the absence of an external magnetic field, by resonant circularly polarized optical excitation of a single electron or hole charged quantum dot. Optical pumping of the electron spin induces an effective inhomogeneous magnetic (Knight) field that determines the direction along which nuclear spins could polarize and enables nuclear-spin cooling by suppressing depolarization induced by nuclear dipole-dipole interactions. Our observations suggest a new mechanism for spin-polarization where spin exchange with an electron reservoir plays a crucia…
We experimentally demonstrate high degree of polarization of 13C nuclear spins weakly interacting with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. We combine coherent microwave excitation pulses with optical illumination to provide controlled relaxation and achieve a polarity-tunable, fast nuclear polarization of degree higher than 85% at room temperature for remote 13C nuclear spins exhibiting hyperfine interaction strength with NV centers of the order of 600 kHz. We show with the aid of numerical simulation that the anisotropic hyperfine tensor components naturally provide a route to control s…
We show that detuned optical pulse trains with a modest spectral width can polarize nuclear spins in InAs quantum dots. The pulse bandwidth is large enough to excite a coherent superposition of both electron spin eigenstates in these negatively charged dots but narrow enough to give partial spectral selectivity between the eigenstates. The coherent precession of electron spin states and periodic excitation focuses the nuclear spin distribution, producing a discrete set of precession modes. The spectral selectivity generates a net nuclear polarization, through a mechanism that relies on optical…

We demonstrate optically pumped dynamic nuclear polarization of 29-Si nuclear spins that are strongly coupled to paramagnetic color centers in 4H- and 6H-SiC. The 99 +/- 1% degree of polarization at room temperature corresponds to an effective nuclear temperature of 5 microKelvin. By combining ab initio theory with the experimental identification of the color centers' optically excited states, we quantitatively model how the polarization derives from hyperfine-mediated level anticrossings. These results lay a foundation for SiC-based quantum memories, nuclear gyroscopes, and hyperpolarized pro…
Bulk 13C polarization can be strongly enhanced in diamond at room-temperature based on the optical pumping of nitrogen-vacancy color centers. This effect was confirmed by irradiating suitably aligned single-crystals at a ~50 mT field promoting anti-crossings between electronic excited-state levels, followed by shuttling of the sample into a custom-built NMR setup and by subsequent 13C detection. A nuclear polarization of ~0.5% - equivalent to the 13C polarization achievable by thermal polarization at room temperature at fields of ~2000 T - was measured, and its bulk nature determined based on …
It was recently demonstrated that bulk nuclear polarization can be obtained using Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) color centers in diamonds, even at ambient conditions. This is based on the optical polarization of the NV electron spin, and using several polarization transfer methods. One such method is the NOVEL sequence, where a spin-locked sequence is applied on the NV spin, with a microwave power equal to the nuclear precession frequency. This was performed at relatively high fields, to allow for both polarization transfer and noise decoupling. As a result, this scheme requires accurate magnetic fiel…
We introduce an alternate route to dynamically polarize the nuclear spin host of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. Our approach articulates optical, microwave and radio-frequency pulses to recursively transfer spin polarization from the NV electronic spin. Using two complementary variants of the same underlying principle, we demonstrate nitrogen nuclear spin initialization approaching 80% at room temperature both in ensemble and single NV centers. Unlike existing schemes, our approach does not rely on level anti-crossings and is thus applicable at arbitrary magnetic fields. This versat…
In nuclear-spin-polarization-induced quantum dots the electrons are confined through local nuclear spin polarization. The model electron confinement potential is time-dependent due to the nuclear spin diffusion and relaxation processes. It can be well-approximated by a Gaussian curve which is not an exactly solvable potential. We demonstrate that it can also be approximated by multisoliton potentials for the zero value of the angular momentum and by their singular analogues for other values of momentum without any loss of calculational accuracy. We obtain these potentials by supersymmetric (or…
We theoretically study the nuclear spin dynamics driven by electron transport and hyperfine interaction in an electrically-defined double quantum dot (DQD) in the Pauli-blockade regime. We derive a master-equation-based framework and show that the coupled electron-nuclear system displays an instability towards the buildup of large nuclear spin polarization gradients in the two quantum dots. In the presence of such inhomogeneous magnetic fields, a quantum interference effect in the collective hyperfine coupling results in sizable nuclear spin entanglement between the two quantum dots in the ste…
Low thermal polarization of nuclear spins is a primary sensitivity limitation for nuclear magnetic resonance. Here we demonstrate optically pumped (microwave-free) nuclear spin polarization of $^{13}\mathrm{C}$ and $^{15}\mathrm{N}$ in $^{15}\mathrm{N}$-doped diamond. $^{15}\mathrm{N}$ polarization enhancements up to $-2000$ above thermal equilibrium are observed in the paramagnetic system $\mathrm{N_s}^{0}$. Nuclear spin polarization is shown to diffuse to bulk $^{13}\mathrm{C}$ with NMR enhancements of $-200$ at room temperature and $-500$ at $\mathrm{240~K}$, enabling a route to microwave-f…
We report bulk, room-temperature hyperpolarization of 13C nuclear spins observed via high-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The hyperpolarization is achieved by optical pumping (OP) of nitrogen vacancy defect centers in diamond accompanied by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). The technique harnesses the large optically-induced spin polarization of NV- centers at room temperature, which is many orders of magnitude greater than thermal equilibrium polarization and typically achievable only at sub-Kelvin temperatures. Transfer of the spin polarization to the 13C nuclear spins is accomplis…
Dynamical magnetic and nuclear polarization in complex spin systems is discussed on the example of transfer of spin from exciton to the central spin of magnetic impurity in a quantum dot in the presence of a finite number of nuclear spins. The exciton is described in terms of the electron and heavy hole spins interacting via exchange interaction with magnetic impurity, via hypeprfine interaction with a finite number of nuclear spins and via dipole interaction with photons. The time-evolution of the exciton, magnetic impurity and nuclear spins is calculated exactly between quantum jumps corresp…
We present an experimental study of the dynamics underlying the buildup and decay of dynamical nuclear spin polarization in a single semiconductor quantum dot. Our experiment shows that the nuclei can be polarized on a time scale of a few milliseconds, while their decay dynamics depends drastically on external parameters. We show that a single electron can very efficiently depolarize the nuclear spins and discuss two processes that can cause this depolarization. Conversely, in the absence of a quantum dot electron, the lifetime of nuclear spin polarization is on the time scale of a second, mos…
We introduce a solvable model of driven fermions that elucidates the role of the localization transition in driven disordered magnets, as used in the context of dynamic nuclear polarization. Instead of spins, we study a set of non-interacting fermions that are coupled locally to nuclear spins and tend to hyperpolarize them. The induced hyperpolarization is a fingerprint of the driven steady state of the fermions, which undergo an Anderson Localization (AL) transition upon increasing the disorder. Our central result is that the maximal hyperpolarization level is always found close to the locali…
We experimentally and theoretically demonstrate the purity (polarization) control of qubits entangled with multiple spins, using induced dephasing in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) setups to simulate repeated quantum measurements. We show that one may steer the qubit ensemble towards a quasi-equilibrium state of certain purity, by choosing suitable time intervals between dephasing operations. These results demonstrate that repeated dephasing at intervals associated with the anti-Zeno regime lead to ensemble purification, whereas those associated with the Zeno regime lead to ensemble mixing.
