It has been observed that a quantum mechanical theory need not to be Hermitian to have a real spectrum. In this paper we obtain the eigenvalues of a Dirac charged particle in a complex static and spherically symmetric potential. Furthermore, we study the Complex Morse and complex Coulomb potentials.
It has been observed that a quantum theory need not to be Hermitian to have a real spectrum. We study the non-Hermitian relativistic quantum theories for many complex potentials, and we obtain the real relativistic energy eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions of a Dirac charged particle in complex static and spherically symmetric potentials. Complex Dirac-Eckart, complex Dirac-Rosen-Morse II, complex Dirac-Scarf and complex Dirac-Poschl-Teller potential are investigated.
The nilpotent Dirac formalism has been shown, in previous publications, to generate new physical explanations for aspects of particle physics, with the additional possibility of calculating some of the parameters involved in the Standard Model. The applications so far obtained are summarised, with an outline of some more recent developments.
We extend the study of Kapitza-Dirac diffraction to the case of two-particle systems. Due to the exchange effects the shape and visibility of the two-particle detection patterns show important differences for identical and distinguishable particles. We also identify a novel quantum statistics effect present in momentum space for some values of the initial particle momenta, which is associated with different numbers of photon absorptions compatible with the final momenta.
We solve the quaternionic Dirac equation ($\mathbbm H$DE) in the real Hilbert space, and we ascertain that their free particle solutions set comprises eight elements in the case of a massive particle, and a four elements solution set in the case of a massless particle, a richer situation when compared to the four elements solutions set of the usual complex Dirac equation ($\mathbbm C$DE). These free particle solutions were unknown in the previous solutions of anti-hermitian quaternionic quantum mechanics, and constitute an essential element in order to build a quaternionic quantum field theory…
The problem of a Dirac particle moving in a deformed Hulthen potential is solved in the framework of the path integral formalism. With the help of the Biedenharn transformation, the construction of a closed form for the Green's function of the second-order Dirac equation is done by using a proper approximation to the centrifugal term and the Green's function of the linear Dirac equation is calculated. The energy spectrum for the bound states is obtained from the poles of the Green's function. A Dirac particle in the standard Hulthen potential for q=1 and a Dirac hydrogen-like ion when q = 1 an…
In this paper a bound localized Dirac particle is shown to exhibit a revival of the zitterbewegung (ZB) oscillation amplitude. These revivals go beyond the known quasiclassical regenerations in which the ZB oscillation amplitude is decreasing from period to period. This phenomenon is studied in a Dirac oscillator and it is shown that it is possible to set up wave packets in which there is a regeneration of the initial ZB amplitude.
Based on easy-to-follow considerations it is not difficult to be vehemently opposed not only the solutions found in that paper but also the conclusions manifested there.
We calculate correlation function in the Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen type of experiment with massive relativistic Dirac particles in the framework of the quantum field theory formalism. We perform our calculations for states which are physically interesting and transforms covariantly under the full Lorentz group action, i.e. for pseudoscalar and vector state.
We study a relativistic charged Dirac particle moving in a rotating magnetic field. By using a time-dependent unitary transformation, the Dirac equation with the time-dependent Hamiltonian can be reduced to a Dirac-like equation with a time-independent effective Hamiltonian. Eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian correspond to cyclic solutions of the original Dirac equation. The nonadiabatic geometric phase of a cyclic solution can be expressed in terms of the expectation value of the component of the total angular momentum along the rotating axis, regardless of whether the solution is expli…
We have studied the relativistic effects on the mean spin entanglement of two massive Dirac particles using the simultaneous eigen-spinors of the Foldy-Woutheysen mean spin operator and the Dirac Hamiltonian. We have obtained the transformation matrix from the spinor with specific momentum to the spinor with a transformed momentum under an arbitrary Lorentz transformation. Using the transformation matrix we have shown the consistent monotonic behavior between the concurrence and the maximum value of Bell parameter in Bell inequality of transformed spin states.
The Levinson theorem for nonrelativistic quantum mechanics in two spatial dimensions is generalized to Dirac particles moving in a central field. The theorem relates the total number of bound states with angular momentum $j$ ($j=\pm 1/2, \pm 3/2, ... $), $n_j$, to the phase shifts $η_j(\pm E_k)$ of scattering states at zero momentum as follows: $η_j(μ)+η_j(-μ)= n_jπ$.
Presented is a quantum computing representation of Dirac particle dynamics. The approach employs an operator splitting method that is an analytically closed-form product decomposition of the unitary evolution operator. This allows the Dirac equation to be cast as a unitary finite-difference equation in a high-energy limit. The split evolution operator (with separate kinetic and interaction terms) is useful for efficient quantum simulation. For pedagogical purposes, here we restrict the treatment to Dirac particle dynamics in 1+1 spacetime dimensions. Independent derivations of the quantum algo…
We present a general proof that Dirac particles cannot be localized below their Compton length by symmetric but otherwise arbitrary scalar potentials. This proof does not invoke the Heisenberg uncertainty relation and thus does not rely on the nonrelativistic linear momentum relation. Further it is argued that the result is also applicable for more general potentials, as e.g. generated by nonlinear interactions. Finally a possible realisation of such a system is proposed.
The effect of the built-in supersymmetric quantum mechanical language on the spectrum of the (1+1)-Dirac equation, with position-dependent mass (PDM) and complexified Lorentz scalar interactions, is re-emphasized. The signature of the "quasi-parity" on the Dirac particles' spectra is also studied. A Dirac particle with PDM and complexified scalar interactions of the form S(z)=S(x-ib) (an inversely linear plus linear, leading to a PT-symmetric oscillator model), and S(x)=S_{r}(x)+iS_{i}(x) (a PT-symmetric Scarf II model) are considered. Moreover, a first-order intertwining differential operator…
It was known that a free, nonrelativistic particle in a superposition of positive momenta can, in certain cases, bear a negative probability current --- hence termed quantum backflow. Here, it is shown that more variations can be brought about for a free Dirac particle, particularly when negative-energy solutions are taken into account. Since any Dirac particle can be understood as an antiparticle that acts oppositely (and vice versa), quantum backflow is found to arise in the superposition (i) of a well-defined momentum but different signs of energies, or more remarkably (ii) of different sig…
The formalism of Operational Dynamical Modeling [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 109}, 190403 (2012)] is employed to analyze dynamics of spin half relativistic particles. We arrive at the Dirac equation from specially constructed relativistic Ehrenfest theorems by assuming that the coordinates and momenta do not commute. Forbidding creation of antiparticles and requiring the commutativity of the coordinates and momenta lead to classical Spohn's equation [Ann. Phys. {\bf 282}, 420 (2000)]. Moreover, Spohn's equation turns out to be the classical Koopman-von Neumann theory underlying the Dirac equation.
We analyze the Bragg regime of the two-particle Kapitza-Dirac arrangement, completing the basic theory of this effect. We provide a detailed evaluation of the detection probabilities for multi-mode states, showing that a complete description must include the interaction time in addition to the usual dimensionless parameter w. The arrangement can be used as a massive two-particle beam splitter. In this respect, we present a comparison with Hong-Ou-Mandel-type experiments in quantum optics. The analysis reveals the presence of dips for massive bosons and a differentiated behavior of distinguisha…
The scattering of Dirac particles by symmetric potentials in one dimension is studied. A Levinson theorem is established. By this theorem, the number of bound states with even (odd) parity, $n_+$ ($n_-$), is related to the phase shifts $η_+(\pm E_k)$ [$η_-(\pm E_k)$] of scattering states with the same parity at zero momentum as follows: $$η_\pm(μ)+η_\pm(-μ)\pm{π\over 2}[\sin^2η_\pm(μ) -\sin^2η_\pm(-μ)]=n_\pmπ.$$ The theorem is verified by several simple examples.
We study Bell's inequality using the Bell states constructed from four component Dirac spinors. Spin operator is related to the Pauli-Lubanski pseudo vector which is relativistic invariant operator. By using Lorentz transformation, in both Bell states and spin operator, we obtain an observer independent Bell's inequality, so that it is maximally violated as long as it is violated maximally in the rest frame.
For Dirac equation, operator-invariants containing explicit time-dependence in parallel to known time-dependent invariants of nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation are introduced and discussed. As an example, a free Dirac particle is considered and new invariants are constructed for it. The integral of motion, which is initial Newton-Wigner position operator, is obtained explicitly for a free Dirac particle. For such particle with kick modeled by delta-function of time, the time-depending integral, which has physical meaning of initial momentum, is found.
We have studied a relativistically covariant Stern-Gerlach (SG) experiment for a relativistic spin and a Dirac spin. We have obtained the relativistic spin in an arbitrary frame by using the classical spin dipole tensor, which gives the covariant spin dipole interactions, and the relation between a spin and a spin magnetic dipole moment. The relativistic spin is shown to have problems to become a proper spin operator for a massive relativistic particle because of two reasons. First, the relativistic spin three-vector operators cannot satisfy the spin algebra. Second, the SG experiment for the …
The core concept of quantum simulation is the mapping of an inaccessible quantum system onto a controllable one by identifying analogous dynamics. We map the Dirac equation of relativistic quantum mechanics in 3+1 dimensions onto a multi-level superconducting Josephson circuit. Resonant drives determine the particle mass and momentum and the quantum state represents the internal spinor dynamics, which are cast in the language of multi-level quantum optics. The degeneracy of the Dirac spectrum corresponds to a degeneracy of bright/dark states within the system and particle spin and helicity are…
The problem of detection time distribution concerns a quantum particle surrounded by detectors and consists of computing the probability distribution of where and when the particle will be detected. While the correct answer can be obtained in principle by solving the Schrodinger equation of particle and detectors together, a more practical answer should involve a simple rule representing the behavior of idealized detectors. We have argued elsewhere [http://arxiv.org/abs/1601.03715] that the most natural rule for this purpose is the "absorbing boundary rule," based on the 1-particle Schrodinger…
The extended Dirac's principle describes the interference between different particles as an effect of the multiparticle system with itself. In this paper we present a novel example, based on the detection of particles emitted in multimode states by independent sources, which illustrates in a simple way the necessity of extending the original Dirac's criterion.
Present work is devoted to studying the spatio-temporal of the Dirac and the Klein Gordon (KG) particles confined in a one-dimensional box. We discuss the quantum carpets and revivals time for each particle. Moreover, we explain that the relativistic phenomena not only decrease the density of the corresponding carpets but also affect the revivals time of each particle within a box. Further, we impose different limiting conditions on the obtained Dirac energy solution and explain the wellknown slight-relativistic and non-relativistic quantum carpets, respectively. In addition, we extend our stu…
In this contribution, we propose a new model for studying the confinement of a spin-half particle to a two-dimensional quantum ring in systems described by the Dirac equation by introducing a new minimal coupling into the Dirac equation. We show that the introduction of this new minimal coupling into the Dirac equation yields a generalization of the two-dimensional model for a quantum ring proposed by Tan and Inkson [W.-C. Tan and J. C. Inkson, Semicond. Sci. Technol. {\bf11}, 1635 (1996)] for relativistic spin-half quantum particles.
It is shown that the paper `Energy spectrum of a Dirac particle with position-dependent mass under the influence of the Aharonov-Casher effect', by Oliveira, Borges and Sousa [Braz. J. Phys. 49, 801 (2019)], is based on a series of ingredients clearly incorrect.
A partial wave analysis using the basis of the total angular momentum operator J_3 is carried out for the first order Born amplitude of a Dirac particle in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB)potential. It is demonstrated that the s-partial wave contributes to the scattering amplitude in contrast to the case with scalar non-relativistic particles. We suggest that this explains the fact that the first order Born amplitude of a Dirac particle coincides with the exact amplitude expanded to the same order, where it does not for a scalar particle. An interesting algebra involving the Dirac velocity operator and th…
An efficient solution of the Dirac Hamiltonian flow equations has been proposed through a novel expandsion with the inverse of the Dirac effective mass. The efficiency and accuracy of this new expansion have been demonstrated by reducing a radial Dirac Hamiltonian with large scalar and vector potentials to two nonrelativistic Hamiltonians corresponding to particles and antiparticles, respectively. By solving the two nonrelativistic Hamiltonians, it is found that the exact solutions of the Dirac equation, for both particles and antiparticles, can be reproduced with a high accuracy up to only a …
In the framework of Dirac quantization with second class constraints, a free particle moving on the surface of a $(d-1)-$dimensional sphere has an ambiguity in the energy spectrum due to the arbitrary shift of canonical momenta. We explicitly show that this spectrum obtained by the Dirac method can be consistent with the result of the Batalin-Fradkin-Tyutin formalism, which is an improved Dirac method, at the level of the first-class constraint by fixing the ambiguity, and discuss its physical consequences.
We apply the principles of discrete time mechanics discussed in earlier papers to the first and second quantised Dirac equation. We use the Schwinger action principle to find the anticommutation relations of the Dirac field and of the particle creation operators in the theory. We find new solutions to the discrete time Dirac equation, referred to as oscillons on account of their extraordinary behaviour. Their principal characteristic is that they oscillate with a period twice that of the fundamental time interval T of our theory. Although these solutions can be associated with definite charge,…
We demonstrate the emergence and dynamics of intra-particle entanglement in massless Dirac fermions. This entanglement, generated by spin-orbit coupling, arises between the spin and sublattice pseudospin of electrons in graphene. The entanglement is a complex dynamic quantity but is generally large, independent of the initial state. Its time dependence implies a dynamical violation of a Bell inequality, while its magnitude indicates that large intra-particle entanglement is a general feature of graphene on a substrate. These features are also expected to impact entanglement between pairs of pa…
The quantum Jarzynski equality is an important theorem of modern quantum thermodynamics. We show that the Jarzynski equality readily generalizes to relativistic quantum mechanics described by the Dirac equation. After establishing the conceptual framework we solve a pedagogical, yet experimentally relevant, system analytically. As a main result we obtain the exact quantum work distributions for charged particles traveling through a time-dependent vector potential evolving under Schrödinger as well as under Dirac dynamics, and for which the Jarzynski equality is verified. Special emphasis is pu…
Dirac particle represents a fundamental constituent of our nature. Simulation of Dirac particle dynamics by a controllable quantum system using quantum walks will allow us to investigate the non-classical nature of dynamics in its discrete form. In this work, starting from a modified version of one-spatial dimensional general inhomogeneous split-step discrete quantum walk we derive an effective Hamiltonian which mimics a single massive Dirac particle dynamics in curved $(1+1)$ space-time dimension coupled to $U(1)$ gauge potential---which is a forward step towards the simulation of the unifica…
We investigate the effects of the chiral MIT boundary conditions for a Dirac particle in a 1D box. We show how the boundary condition affects the discrete momentum, energy level, transition frequency, and spin state in a box. The effects of the chiral MIT boundary conditions on the probability and scalar densities are also demonstrated. The results show that an asymmetric distribution appears in the box depending on the parameters of the spin orientation and chiral angle.
We study theoretically a Fermi-Dirac atomic gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice coupled to a coherent electromagnetic field with a topologically nontrivial soliton phase profile. We argue that the resulting fractional eigenvalues of the particle number operator can be detected via light scattering. This could be a truly quantum mechanical measurement of the particle number fractionalization in a dilute atomic gas.
When quantum fields are coupled to gravitational fields, spontaneous particle creation may occur similarly to when they are coupled to external electromagnetic fields. Gravitational fields can be incorporated as background spacetime if the back-action of matter on it can be neglected, yielding modified Dirac or Klein-Gordon equations for elementary fermions and bosons respectively. The semi-classical description predicts particle creation in many scenarios including expanding universe, near the event horizon of a black hole (the Hawking effect), and an accelerating observer in flat spacetime (…
It has been found that quantum corrections can substantially affect the classical results of tracking for trajectories close to the separatrix. Hence the development of a basic formalism for obtaining the quantum maps for any particle beam optical system is called for. To this end, it is observed that several aspects of quantum maps for the beam optics of spin-1/2 particles can be studied, at the level of single particle dynamics, using the proper formalism based on the Dirac equation.
We consider the Dirac equation on periodic networks (quantum graphs). The self-adjoint quasi periodic boundary conditions are derived. The secular equation allowing us to find the energy spectrum of the Dirac particles on periodic quantum graphs is obtained. Band spectra of the periodic quantum graphs of different topologies are calculated. Universality of the probability to be in the spectrum for certain graph topologies is observed.
We study the pseudo spin-orbital (SO) effects experienced by massive Dirac particles in graphene, which can potentially be of a larger magnitude compared to the conventional Rashba SO effects experienced by particles in a 2DEG semiconductor heterostructure. In order to generate a uniform vertical pseudo SO field, we propose an artificial atomic structure, consisting of a graphene ring and a charged nanodot at the center which produces a large radial electric field. In this structure, a large pseudo SO coupling strength can be achieved by accelerating the Dirac particles around the ring, due to…
We investigate torsion and noninertial effects on a spin-$1/2$ quantum particle in the nonrelativistic limit of the Dirac equation. We consider the cosmic dislocation spacetime as a background and show that a rotating system of reference can be used out to distances which depend on the parameter related to the torsion of the defect. Therefore, we analyse torsion effects on the spectrum of energy of a nonrelativistic Dirac particle confined to a hard-wall potential in a Fermi-Walker reference frame.
We show that the Bohmian approach in terms of persisting particles that move on continuous trajectories following a deterministic law can be literally applied to QFT. By means of the Dirac sea model -- exemplified in the electron sector of the standard model neglecting radiation -- we explain how starting from persisting particles, one is led to standard QFT employing creation and annihilation operators when tracking the dynamics with respect to a reference state, the so-called vacuum. Since on the level of wave functions, both formalisms are mathematically equivalent, this proposal provides f…
We extend Panella and Roy's [13] work on one-dimensional heterostructure for massless Dirac particles with position-dependent (PD) velocity. We consider Dirac particles where both the mass and velocity are position-dependent. Bound states in the continuum (BIC)-like and discrete bound state solutions are reported. It is observed that BIC-like solutions are not only feasible for the ultra-relativistic (massless) Dirac particles but also for Dirac particles with PD-mass and PD-velocity that satisfy the condition m(x)v(x)v(x)=A, where A is constant. (1+1)-Dirac Poschl-Teller and harmonic oscillat…
We consider Pauli--Dirac fermion submitted to an inhomogeneous magnetic field. It is showed that the propagator of the neutral Dirac particle with an anomalous magnetic moment in an external linear magnetic field is the causal Green function $S^{c}(x_{b},x_{a})$ of the Pauli--Dirac equation. The corresponding Green function is calculated via path integral method in global projection, giving rise to the exact eigenspinors expressions. The neutral particle creation probability corresponding to our system is analyzed, which is obtained as function of the introduced field $B'$ and the additional s…
We construct the relativistic particle model without Grassmann variables which meets the following requirements. A) Canonical quantization of the model implies the Dirac equation. B) The variable which experiences {\it Zitterbewegung}, represents a gauge non-invariant variable in our model. Hence our particle does not experiences the undesirable {\it Zitterbewegung}. C) In the nonrelativistic limit spin is described by three-vector, as it could be expected.
We discuss a geometric approach to confining a Dirac neutral particle with a permanent magnetic dipole moment interacting with external fields to a hard-wall confining potential in the Minkowski spacetime through noninertial effects. We discuss the behaviour of external fields induced by noninertial effects, and a case where relativistic bound states can be achieved in analogous way to having a Dirac particle confined to a quantum dot. We show that this confinement of a Dirac neutral particle analogous to a quantum dot arises from noninertial effects that give rise to the geometry of the manif…
We show that a dilute 2-species gas of Fermi-Dirac alkali-metal atoms in a periodic optical lattice may exhibit fractionization of particle number when the two components are coupled via a coherent electromagnetic field with a topologically nontrivial phase profile. This results in fractional eigenvalues of the spin operator with vanishing fluctuations. The fractional part can be accurately controlled by modifying the effective detuning of the electromagnetic field.
A generalization of the standard model of Dirac particle in external electromagnetic field is proposed. In the generalization we take into account interactions of this particle with environment, which is described by the memory function. This function takes into account that the behavior of the particle at proper time can depend not only at the present time, but also on the history of changes on finite time interval. In this case the Dirac particle can be considered an open quantum system with non-Markovian dynamics. The violation of the semigroup property of dynamic maps is a characteristic p…
Based on the assumption that the probability density of finding a free particle is independent of position, we infer the form of the eigenfunction for the free particle, $\bra{x} p > = \exp(ipx/\hbar)/\sqrt{2π\hbar}$. The canonical commutation relation between the momentum and position operators and the Ehrenfest theorem in the free particle case are derived solely from differentiation of the delta function and the form of $\bra{x} p >$.
We have solved exactly the two-component Dirac equation in the presence of a spatially one-dimensional Hulthén potential, and presented the Dirac spinors of scattering states in terms of hypergeometric functions. We have calculated the reflection and transmission coefficients by the matching conditions on the wavefunctions, and investigated the condition for the existence of transmission resonances. Furthermore, we have demonstrated how the transmission-resonance condition depends on the shape of the potential.
The explicit expression for the inclusive probability to record a photon created in transition radiation from a one Dirac particle wave packet traversing an ideally conducting plate is derived in the leading order of perturbation theory. The anomalous magnetic moment of the Dirac particle is taken into account. It is shown that the quantum corrections to transition radiation from an electrically charged particle give rise to production of photons with polarization vector orthogonal to the reaction plane ($E$-plane). These corrections result from both the quantum recoil and the finite size of a…
There are constructed exact solutions of the quantum-mechanical Dirac equation for a spin S=1/2 particle in Riemannian space of constant negative curvature, hyperbolic Lobachevsky space, in presence of an external magnetic field, analogue of the homogeneous magnetic field in the Minkowski space. A generalized formula for energy levels, describing quantization of the transversal motion of the particle in magnetic field has been obtained. The same problem is solved for spin 1/2 particle in the space of constant positive curvature, spherical Riemann space. A generalized formula for energy levels,…
A first-order relativistic wave equation is constructed in five dimensions. Its solutions are eight-component spinors, which are interpreted as single-particle fermion wave functions in four-dimensional spacetime. Use of a ``cylinder condition'' (the removal of explicit dependence on the fifth coordinate) reduces each eight-component solution to a pair of degenerate four-component spinors obeying the Dirac equation. This five-dimensional method is used to obtain solutions for a free particle and for a particle moving in the Coulomb potential. It is shown that, under the cylinder condition, the…
Assuming neutrinos to be of the Dirac type, the little group generators for the one-particle states, created off the vacuum by the field operator, are obtained, both in terms of the one-particle states themselves and in terms of creation/annihilation operators. It is shown that these generators act also as rotation operators in the Hilbert space of the states, providing three types of transformations: a helicity flip, the standard charge conjugation, and a combination of the two, up to phases. The transformations' properties are provided in detail and their physical implications discussed. It …
Inspired by the reconstituted similarity renormalization group method, the reconstituted Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation is proposed. Applied to the Dirac equation in the covariant density functional theory, the reconstituted FW transformation shows a fast convergence of the spectrum of the single-particle energy. The single-particle densities and the single-particle scalar densities obtained by this new method are also investigated. In particular, the relativistic corrections to the densities from the picture-change error between the Schrödinger and Dirac pictures are discussed in detail…
We study quantum dynamics of a kicked relativistic spin-half particle in a one dimensional box. Time-dependence of the average kinetic energy and evolution of the wave packet are explored. Kicking potential is introduced as the Lorentz-scalar, i.e., through the mass-term in the Dirac equation. It is found that depending on the values of the kicking parameters E(t) can be periodic, monotonically growing and non-periodic function of time. Particle transport in the system is studied by considering spatio-temporal evolution of the Gaussian wave packet.Splitting of the packet into two symmetric par…
The traditional approach to accelerator optics, based mainly on classical mechanics, is working excellently from the practical point of view. However, from the point of view of curiosity, as well as with a view to explore quantitatively the consequences of possible small quantum corrections to the classical theory, a quantum mechanical formalism of accelerator optics for the Dirac particle is being developed recently. Here, the essential features of such a quantum beam optical formalism for any spin-$\half$ particle are reviewed. It seems that the quantum corrections, particularly those due to…
