We present a general proof that Dirac particles cannot be localized below their Compton length by symmetric but otherwise arbitrary scalar potentials. This proof does not invoke the Heisenberg uncertainty relation and thus does not rely on the nonrelativistic linear momentum relation. Further it is argued that the result is also applicable for more general potentials, as e.g. generated by nonlinear interactions. Finally a possible realisation of such a system is proposed.
Geometric phase in the wave function is important with regard to quantum non-locality and adiabatic evolution. We study the confinement of a particle by three-dimensional isotropically moving walls, of relevance to experimental trapping techniques, via a proposed approach that explains the physical origin of the geometric Dirac phase induced in the wave function. This phase depends only on the relative rate of change of the spatial scale factor. The approach also yields the class of external potentials that replicate adiabatic evolution in finite time. As illustrative examples, we consider uni…
In this contribution, we propose a new model for studying the confinement of a spin-half particle to a two-dimensional quantum ring in systems described by the Dirac equation by introducing a new minimal coupling into the Dirac equation. We show that the introduction of this new minimal coupling into the Dirac equation yields a generalization of the two-dimensional model for a quantum ring proposed by Tan and Inkson [W.-C. Tan and J. C. Inkson, Semicond. Sci. Technol. {\bf11}, 1635 (1996)] for relativistic spin-half quantum particles.
In this article we discuss generalized harmonic confinement of massless Dirac fermions in (2+1) dimensions using smooth finite magnetic fields. It is shown that these types of magnetic fields lead to conditional confinement, that is confinement is possible only when the angular momentum (and parameters which depend on it) assumes some specific values. The solutions for non zero energy states as well as zero energy states have been found exactly.
We show how it is possible to trap two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions in spatially inhomogeneous magnetic fields, as long as the formed magnetic quantum dot (or ring) is of a slowly decaying nature. It is found that a modulation of the depth of the magnetic quantum dot leads to successive confinement-deconfinement transitions of vortexlike states with a certain angular momentum, until a regime is reached where only states with one sign of angular momentum are supported. We illustrate these characteristics with both exact solutions and a hitherto unknown quasi-exactly solvable model utiliz…
We use a generalized scheme of supersymmetric quantum mechanics to obtain the energy spectrum and wave function for Dirac equation in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime coupled to a static scalar field.
We solve the Dirac equation in one space dimension for the case of a linear, Lorentz-scalar potential. This extends earlier work of Bhalerao and Ram [Am. J. Phys. 69 (7), 817-818 (2001)] by eliminating unnecessary constraints. The spectrum is shown to match smoothly to the nonrelativistic spectrum in a weak-coupling limit.
We have analytically studied bound states of the one-dimensional Dirac equation for scalar and vector double square-well potentials (DSPs), by using the transfer-matrix method. Detailed numerical calculations of the eigenvalue, wave function and density probability have been performed for the three cases: (1) vector DSP only, (2) scalar DSP only, and (3) scalar and vector DSPs with equal magnitudes. We discuss the difference and similarity among results of the cases (1)-(3) in the Dirac equation and that in the Schrödinger equation. Motion of a wave packet is calculated for a study on quantum …
Based on the studies of confinement of quarks, we introduce a linear scalar potential into the relativistic quantum dynamics of a scalar particle. Then, we analyse the linear confinement of a relativistic scalar particle in a Gödel-type spacetime in the presence of a topological defect. We consider a Gödel-type spacetime associated with null curvature, i.e., the Som-Raychaudhuri spacetime, which is characterized by the presence of vorticity in the spacetime. Then, we search for analytical solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation and analyse the influence of the topology of the cosmic string and …
The effect of the built-in supersymmetric quantum mechanical language on the spectrum of the (1+1)-Dirac equation, with position-dependent mass (PDM) and complexified Lorentz scalar interactions, is re-emphasized. The signature of the "quasi-parity" on the Dirac particles' spectra is also studied. A Dirac particle with PDM and complexified scalar interactions of the form S(z)=S(x-ib) (an inversely linear plus linear, leading to a PT-symmetric oscillator model), and S(x)=S_{r}(x)+iS_{i}(x) (a PT-symmetric Scarf II model) are considered. Moreover, a first-order intertwining differential operator…
We study the confinement of Dirac fermions in graphene and in carbon nanotubes by an external magnetic field, mechanical deformations or inhomogeneities in the substrate. By applying variational principles to the square of the Dirac operator, we obtain sufficient and necessary conditions for confinement of the quasi-particles. The rigorous theoretical results are illustrated on the realistic examples of the three classes of traps.
We consider confinement of Dirac fermions in $AB$-stacked bilayer graphene by inhomogeneous on-site interactions, (pseudo-)magnetic field or inter-layer interaction. Working within the framework of four-band approximation, we focus on the systems where the stationary equation is reducible into two stationary equations with $2\times2$ Dirac-type Hamiltonians and auxiliary interactions. We show that it is possible to find localized states by solving an effective Schrödinger equation with energy-dependent potential. We consider several scenarios where bilayer graphene is subject to inhomogneous (…
The electrons found in Dirac materials are notorious for being difficult to manipulate due to the Klein phenomenon and absence of backscattering. Here we investigate how spatial modulations of the Fermi velocity in two-dimensional Dirac materials can give rise to localization effects, with either full (zero-dimensional) confinement or partial (one-dimensional) confinement possible depending on the geometry of the velocity modulation. We present several exactly solvable models illustrating the nature of the bound states which arise, revealing how the gradient of the Fermi velocity is crucial fo…
The problem of confinement of neutral fermions in two-dimensional space-time is approached with a pseudoscalar double-step potential in the Dirac equation. Bound-state solutions are obtained when the coupling is of sufficient intensity. The confinement is made plausible by arguments based on effective mass and anomalous magnetic interaction.
The problem of confinement of spinless particles in 1+1 dimensions is approached with a linear potential by considering a mixing of Lorentz vector and scalar couplings. Analytical bound-states solutions are obtained when the scalar coupling is of sufficient intensity compared to the vector coupling.
The Klein-Gordon and the Dirac equations with vector and scalar potentials are investigated under a more general condition, $V_{v}=V_{s} + \mathrm{const.}$ These isospectral problems are solved in a case of squared trigonometric potential functions and bound states for either particles or antiparticles are found. The eigenvalues and eigenfuntions are discussed in some detail. It is revealed that a spin-0 particle is better localized than a spin-1/2 particle when they have the same mass and are subject to the same potentials.
An efficient solution of the Dirac Hamiltonian flow equations has been proposed through a novel expandsion with the inverse of the Dirac effective mass. The efficiency and accuracy of this new expansion have been demonstrated by reducing a radial Dirac Hamiltonian with large scalar and vector potentials to two nonrelativistic Hamiltonians corresponding to particles and antiparticles, respectively. By solving the two nonrelativistic Hamiltonians, it is found that the exact solutions of the Dirac equation, for both particles and antiparticles, can be reproduced with a high accuracy up to only a …
The problem of a fermion subject to a general scalar potential in a two-dimensional world for nonzero eigenenergies is mapped into a Sturm-Liouville problem for the upper component of the Dirac spinor. In the specific circumstance of an exponential potential, we have an effective Morse potential which reveals itself as an essentially relativistic problem. Exact bound solutions are found in closed form for this problem. The behaviour of the upper and lower components of the Dirac spinor is discussed in detail, particularly the existence of zero modes.
In their recent paper (Inter. J. Mod. Phys. A 26 (2011) 1011), Zarrinkamar and coauthors have considered the radial Dirac equation for a Coulomb scalar, vector and tensor interaction. The exact solutions for the energy eigenvalues they have reported for spin-symmetry and pseudo-spin symmetry were mishandled and are incorrect eigenvalues, therefore.
We consider several classes of symmetries of the Dirac Hamiltonian in 3+1 dimensions, with axially-deformed scalar and vector potentials. The symmetries include the known pseudospin and spin limits and additional symmetries which occur when the potentials depend on different variables. Supersymmetries are observed within each class and the corresponding charges are identified.
We consider exact/quasi-exact solvability of Dirac equation with a Lorentz scalar potential based on factorizability of the equation. Exactly solvable and $sl(2)$-based quasi-exactly solvable potentials are discussed separately in Cartesian coordinates for a pure Lorentz potential depending only on one spatial dimension, and in spherical coordinates in the presence of a Dirac monopole.
We show that the Dirac equation in 3+1 dimensions gives rise to supersymmetric patterns when the scalar and vector potentials are (i) Coulombic with arbitrary strengths or (ii) when their sum or difference is a constant, leading to relativistic pseudospin and spin symmetries. The conserved quantities and the common intertwining relation responsible for such patterns are discussed.
We find the exact bound-state solutions and normalization constant for the Dirac equation with scalar-vector-pseudoscalar interaction terms for the generalized Hulthén potential in the case where we have a particular mass function $m(x)$. We also search the solutions for the constant mass where the obtained results correspond to the ones when the Dirac equation has spin and pseudospin symmetry, respectively. After giving the obtained results for the non-relativistic case, we search then the energy spectra and corresponding upper and lower components of Dirac spinor for the case of $PT$-symmetr…
In this work, a spin $\frac 12$ relativistic particle described by a generalized potential containing both the Coulomb potential and a Lorentz scalar potential in Dirac equation is investigated in terms of the generalized ladder operators from supersymmetry in quantum mechanics. This formalism is applied for the generalized Dirac-Coulomb problem, which is an exactly solvable potential in relativistic quantum mechanics. We obtain the energy eigenvalues and calculate explicitly the energy eigenfunctions for the ground state and the first excited state.
Inspired by the reconstituted similarity renormalization group method, the reconstituted Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation is proposed. Applied to the Dirac equation in the covariant density functional theory, the reconstituted FW transformation shows a fast convergence of the spectrum of the single-particle energy. The single-particle densities and the single-particle scalar densities obtained by this new method are also investigated. In particular, the relativistic corrections to the densities from the picture-change error between the Schrödinger and Dirac pictures are discussed in detail…
We point out a misleading treatment and incorrect expressions in a recent paper published in this Journal [Eur. Phys. J. C (2019) 79: 541] regarding solutions for the Dirac equation in presence of scalar and vector potentials in a class of flat Gödel-type space-time called Som-Raychaudhuri space-time. Following the appropriate procedure we obtain the solution for this system.
