We calculate the relative amplitude of orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled photon pairs from the spontaneous parametric down conversion. The results show that the amplitude depends on both the two Laguerre indices l, p. We also discuss the influences of the mostly used holograms and mono-mode fibers for mode analyzation. We conclude that only a few dimensions can be explored from the infinite OAM modes of the down-converted photon pairs.
We present a general theoretical description of the temporal shaping of narrowband noncollinear type-I down-converted photons using a spectral phase filter with a symmetric phase distribution. By manipulating the spectral phase of the signal or idler photon, we demonstrate control of the correlation time and shape of the two-photon wave function with modulation frequency and modulation depth of the phase distribution.
In this article we investigate the orbital angular momentum spectrum of photons produced in parametric down conversion process. We study how the transverse profile of the pump mode affects the spectrum as compared to a gaussian pump beam. We show that using perfect optical vortex mode as pump the spectrum can be highly narrowed down. We further study the entanglement between the two down converted photons in the orbital angular momentum basis. We observe that photons entangled in Laguerre-Gaussian modes exhibit greater higher dimensional entanglement.
It is shown that the addition of down-converted photon pairs to coherent laser light enhances the N-photon phase sensitivity due to the quantum interference between components of the same total photon number. Since most of the photons originate from the coherent laser light, this method of obtaining non-classical N-photon states is much more efficient than methods based entirely on parametrically down-converted photons. Specifically, it is possible to achieve an optimal phase sensitivity of about delta phi^2=1/N^(3/2), equal to the geometric mean of the standard quantum limit and the Heisenber…
When two-photon interactions are induced by down-converted light with a bandwidth that exceeds the pump bandwidth, they can obtain a behavior that is pulse-like temporally, yet spectrally narrow. At low photon fluxes this behavior reflects the time and energy entanglement between the down-converted photons. However, two-photon interactions such as two-photon absorption (TPA) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) can exhibit such a behavior even at high power levels, as long as the final state (i.e. the atomic level in TPA, or the generated light in SFG) is narrowband enough. This behavior does no…
We present the design and experimental proof of principle of a low threshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO) that continuously oscillates over a large bandwidth allowed by phase matching. The large oscillation bandwidth is achieved with a selective two-photon loss that suppresses the inherent mode competition, which tends to narrow the bandwidth in conventional OPOs. Our design performs pairwise mode-locking of many frequency pairs, in direct equivalence to passive mode-locking of ultrashort pulsed lasers. The ability to obtain high powers of continuous \textit{and} broadband down-converte…
Using the zero time-delay second-order correlation function for studying the photon statistics, we investigate how the photon statistics of the field-modes generated by parametric down-conversion (PDC) process depends on the photon statistics of the pump field-mode. We derive general expressions for the zero time-delay second-order correlation function of the down-converted field-modes for both multi-mode and single-mode PDC processes. We further study these expressions in the weak down-conversion limit. We show that for a two-photon two-mode PDC process, in which a pump photon splits into two…
We study the two-photon detection amplitude of the down-converted beams in spontaneous parametric down-conversion when the physical variable of orbital angular momentum is involved, taking into account both conservation and non-conservation of angular momentum. Agreeing with experimental observations, our theoretical calculation shows that spatial structure of the two-photon detection amplitude of the down-converted beams carries important information about conservation or non-conservation of orbital angular momentum in spontaneous parametric down-conversion.
Recent theoretical and experimental papers have shown how one can achieve Heisenberg limited measurements by using entangled photons. Here we show how the photons in non-collinear down conversion process can be used for improving the sensitivity of magneto-optical rotation by a factor of four which takes us towards the Heisenberg limit. Our results apply to sources with arbitrary pumping. We also present several generalizations of earlier results for the collinear geometry. The sensitivity depends on whether the two-photon or four-photon coincidence detection is used.
We present a theoretical model for the spatial mode dynamics of an optical parametric oscillator under injection of orbital angular momentum. This process is then interpreted in terms of an interesting picture based on a Poincare representation of first order spatial modes. The spatial properties of the down-converted fields can be easily understood from their symmetries in this geometric representation. By considering the adiabatic mode conversion of the injected signal, we also predict the occurrence of a geometric phase conjugation in the down-converted beams. An experimental setup to measu…
Multipartite entanglement and nonclassicality of four-mode Gaussian states generated in two simultaneous nonlinear processes involving parametric down-conversion and frequency up-conversion are analyzed assuming the vacuum as the initial state. Suitable conditions for the generation of highly entangled states are found. Transfer of the entanglement from the down-converted modes into the up-converted ones is also suggested. The analysis of the whole set of states reveals that sub-shot-noise intensity correlations between the equally-populated down-converted modes, as well as the equally-populat…
Parametric down conversion (PDC) is widely interpreted in terms of photons, but, even among supporters of this interpretation, many properties of the photon pairs have been described as "mind-boggling" and even "absurd". In this article we argue that a classical description of the light field, taking account of its vacuum fluctuations, leads us to a consistent and rational account of all PDC phenomena. "Nonlocality" in quantum optics is simply an artifact of the Photon Concept. We also predict a new phenomenon, namely the appearance of a second, or satellite PDC rainbow.
We numerically and experimentally show that all photons generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) follow a transverse amplitude similar to that of the pump. This amplitude transfer from pump to SPDC is revealed in the Fourier image plane of the down-converted photons restricted by an aperture. We also observe a considerable shift of the image plane from the actual Fourier plane, when size of the aperture is gradually increased. The shift of the Fourier image of down-converted photons affects the quality of spatial mode-based projection in various quantum correlation experiment…
Sources of photon pairs based on the spontaneous parametric down conversion process are commonly used for long distance quantum communication. The key feature for improving the range of transmission is engineering their spectral properties. Following two experimental papers [Opt. Lett., 38, 697 (2013)] and [Opt. Lett., 39, 1481 (2014)] we analytically and numerically analyze the characteristics of a source. It is based on a $β$-barium borate (BBO) crystal cut for type II phase matching at the degenerated frequencies 755 nm $\rightarrow$ 1550 nm + 1550 nm. Our analysis shows a way for full cont…
The time-energy entanglement of down-converted photon pairs is particularly difficult to characterize because direct measurements of photon arrival times are limited by the temporal resolution of photon detection. Here, we explore an alternative possibility of characterizing the temporal coherence of two-photon wavefunctions using single photon interference with weak coherent light. Specifically, this method makes use of the fact that down-conversion generates a coherent superposition of vacuum and two-photon states, so that the coincidence count rates for photon pairs after interference with …
The state of the spatially correlated down-converted photons is usually treated as a two-mode Gaussian entangled state. While intuitively this seems to be reasonable, it is known that new structures in the spatial distributions of these photons can be observed when the phase-matching conditions are properly taken into account. Here, we study how the variances of the near- and far-field conditional probabilities are affected by the phase-matching functions, and we analyze the role of the EPR-criterion regarding the non-Gaussianity and entanglement detection of the spatial two-photon state of sp…
We present a scheme for engineering the joint spectrum of photon pairs created via spontaneous parametric down conversion. Our method relies on customizing the poling configuration of a quasi-phase-matched crystal. We use simulated annealing to find an optimized poling configuration which allows almost arbitrary shaping of the crystal's phase-matching function. This has direct application in the creation of pure single photons---currently one of the most important goals of single-photon quantum optics. We describe the general algorithm and provide code, written in C++, that outputs an optimize…
We report on a new technique for entanglement distillation of the bipartite continuous variable state of spatially correlated photons generated in the spontaneous parametric down-conversion process (SPDC), where tunable non-Gaussian operations are implemented and the post-processed entanglement is certified in real-time using a single-photon sensitive electron multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera. The local operations are performed using non-Gaussian filters modulated into a programmable spatial light modulator and, by using the EMCCD camera for actively recording the probability distributions of th…
The amount of entanglement that exists in a parametric down-converted state is investigated in terms of all the degrees of freedom of the state. We quantify the amount of entanglement by the Schmidt number of the state, represented as a pure bipartite state by tagging the down-converted photons in terms of orthogonal states of polarization with the aid of type II phase-matching. To facilitate our calculations, we use a Wigner functional approach, which allows the incorporation of the full infinite dimensional spatiotemporal degrees of freedom. A quantitative example with reasonably achievable …
Photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) are one of the most useful resources in quantum information science. Two of their most important characteristics are the purity and the indistinguishability, which determine just how useful they are as a resource. We show how these characteristics can both be accessed through Hong, Ou and Mandel (HOM) type interferences using a single pair source. We also provide simple and intuitive analytical formulas to extract their values from the depth of the resulting interference patterns. The validity of these expressions is demonstrat…
We experimentally demonstrate two-photon absorption (TPA) with broadband down-converted light (squeezed vacuum). Although incoherent and exhibiting the statistics of a thermal noise, broadband down-converted light can induce TPA with the same sharp temporal behavior as femtosecond pulses, while exhibiting the high spectral resolution of the narrowband pump laser. Using pulse-shaping methods, we coherently control TPA in Rubidium, demonstrating spectral and temporal resolutions that are 3-5 orders of magnitude below the actual bandwidth and temporal duration of the light itself. Such properties…
The intensity transverse profile of the light produced in the process of stimulated down-conversion is derived. A quantum-mechanical treatment is used. We show that the angular spectrum of the pump laser can be transferred to the stimulated down-converted beam, so that images can also be transferred from the pump to the down-converted beam. We also show that the transfer can occur from the stimulating beam to the down-converted one. Finally, we study the process of diffraction through an arbitrarily shaped screen. For the special case of a double-slit, the interference pattern is explicitly ob…
We demonstrate one- and two-photon diffraction and interference experiments utilizing parametric down-converted photon pairs (biphotons) and a transmission grating. With two-photon detection, the biphoton exhibits a diffraction-interference pattern equivalent to that of an effective single particle that is associated with half the wavelength of the constituent photons. With one-photon detection, however no diffraction-interference pattern is observed. We show that these phenomena originate from the spatial quantum correlation between the down-converted photons.
We investigate the up-conversion process of broadband light from parametric down-conversion (PDC), focusing on the spatio-temporal spectral properties of the sum-frequency generated (SFG) radiation. We demonstrate that the incoherent component of the SFG spectrum is characterized by a skewed cigar-shaped geometry in space-time due to the compensation of spatial walk-off and group-velocity mismatch between the fundamental and the generated SFG fields. The results are illustrated both by a theoretical modeling of the optical system and by experimental measurements.
Creation of correlated photon pairs is one of the key topics in contemporary quantum optics. Here, we theoretically describe the generation of photon pairs in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a resonant spherical nanoparticle made of a dielectric material with bulk $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity. We pick the nanoparticle size that satisfies the condition of resonant eigenmodes described by Mie theory. We reveal that highly directional photon-pair generation can be observed utilising the nonlinear Kerker-type effect, and that this regime provides useful polarisation correlations…
We show that in parametric down-conversion the coherence properties of a temporally partially coherent pump field get entirely transferred to the down-converted entangled two-photon field. Under the assumption that the frequency-bandwidth of the down-converted signal-idler photons is much larger than that of the pump, we derive the temporal coherence functions for the down-converted field, for both infinitely-fast and time-averaged detection schemes. We show that in each scheme the coherence function factorizes into two separate coherence functions with one of them carrying the entire statisti…
We report the efficient generation of high-gain parametric down-conversion, including pump depletion, with pump powers as low as 100 $μ$W (energies $0.1$~$μ$J/pulse) and conversion efficiencies up to 33\%. In our simple configuration, the pump beam is tightly focused into a bulk periodically poled lithium niobate crystal placed in free space. We also observe a change in the photon number statistics for both the pump and down-converted beams as the pump power increases to reach the depleted pump regime. The experimental results are a clear signature of the interplay between the pump and the dow…
We derive an analytical form of the Schmidt modes of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) biphotons in both Cartesian and polar coordinates. We show that these correspond to Hermite-Gauss (HG) or Laguerre-Gauss (LG) modes only for a specific value of their width, and we show how such value depends on the experimental parameters. The Schmidt modes that we explicitly derive allow one to set up an optimised projection basis that maximises the mutual information gained from a joint measurement. The possibility of doing so with LG modes makes it possible to take advantage of the properties…
In the non-linear optical process of type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion, we present on an experiment showing that the two-photon detection amplitude of the down-converted beams does not generally reproduce the transverse profile of the pump beam that carries non-zero orbital angular momentum. We explain this observation by that orbital angular momentum is not conserved in the type-II non-linear process due to the broken rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian.
We study polarization effects in the nonlinear interference of photons generated via frequency non-degenerate spontaneous parametric down conversion. Signal and idler photons generated in the visible and infrared (IR) range, are split in different arms of a nonlinear Michelson interferometer. The interference pattern for signal photons is detected, and it is shown to be dependent on the polarization rotation of idler photons, introduced by a birefringent sample. Based on this concept, we realize two new methods for measurement of sample retardation in the IR range by using well-developed and i…
We make a source of entangled photons (SEP) using spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a non-linear crystal and study the spatial distribution of photon pairs obtained through the down-conversion of different modes of light including higher order vortices. We observe that for the Gaussian pump, the thickness of the SPDC ring varies linearly with the radius of pump beam. However, in case of vortex carrying beams, two concentric SPDC rings are formed for beams above a critical radius. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of SPDC rings increase with increase in the order of optical v…
We demonstrate a hybrid approach to the generation of photon pairs of a short wavelength with high brightness, by combining parametric down-conversion (SPDC) and up-conversion techniques. Photon pairs were generated at the wavelength of 1550 nm via SPDC, and converted to 516.7 nm through up-conversion with the pump at 775 nm. The quantum sum-frequency interference of the up-converted photon pairs exhibited a fringe period of 258.3 nm, which was 6 times shorter than the original wavelength, demonstrating that the energy-time correlation of the photon pairs was preserved. The technique simultane…
Nonclassical states of light are an important resource in today's quantum communication and metrology protocols. Quantum up-conversion of nonclassical states is a promising approach to overcome frequency differences between disparate subsystems within a quantum information network. Here, we present the generation of heralded narrowband single photons at 1550 nm via cavity enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) and their subsequent up-conversion to 532 nm. Quantum non-Gaussianity (QNG), which is an important feature for applications in quantum information science, was experimenta…
We show that the transfer of the plane wave spectrum of the pump beam to the fourth-order transverse spatial correlation function of the two-photon field generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion leads to the conservation and entanglement of orbital angular momentum of light. By means of a simple experimental setup based on fourth-order (or two-photon) interferometry, we show that our theoretical model provides a good description for down-converted fields carrying orbital angular momentum.
We examine the modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement properties of photon pairs generated in a nonlinear, periodically poled, two-mode waveguide (1-D planar or 2-D circular) via nondegenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Any of the possible degrees of freedom -- mode number, frequency, or polarization -- can be used to distinguish the down-converted photons while the others serve as attributes of entanglement. Distinguishing the down-converted photons based on their mode numbers enables us to efficiently generate spectral or polarization entanglement that is either narrowba…
Coincidence-structures in the transverse plane of Type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion carrying orbital angular momentum are obtained. Azimuthal symmetry breaking around the pump beam direction reveals itself on these quantum images. Analytical expressions for the amplitude probability of the down conversion process are shown including the nonlinear polarizability components.
We report on an experiment demonstrating the conservation of orbital angular momentum in stimulated down-conversion. The orbital angular momentum is not transferred to the individual beams of the spontaneous down-conversion, but it is conserved when twin photons are taken individually. We observe the conservation law for an individual beam of the down-conversion through cavity-free stimulated emission.
The coherence properties of broadband down converted light are investigated theoretically and experimentally in both the classical and quantum mechanical frameworks. Although broadband down converted light is one-photon incoherent noise, it possesses unique two-photon coherence. Thus, for performing two-photon processes, down-converted light is equivalent to coherent ultrashort pulses in some aspects and to coherent CW laser radiation in others. This equivalence is theoretically established and experimentally demonstrated in the classical, high-power regime. Two applications that take advantag…
We report on quantum frequency conversion of near-infrared photons from a wavelength of 854nm to the telecommunication O-band at 1310nm with 8% overall conversion efficiency. Entangled photon pairs at 854nm are generated via type-II spontaneous parametric down conversion. One photon is mixed with a strong pump field in a nonlinear ridge waveguide for its conversion to 1310nm. We demonstrate preservation of first and second order coherence of the photons in the conversion process. Based on this we infer the coherence function of the two-photon state and compare it with the actual measured one. …
We experimentally demonstrated the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference between two photons after visible-to-telecommunication wavelength conversion. In the experiment, we prepared a heralded single photon by using spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the other photon from a weak laser source at 780 nm. We converted the wavelength of both photons to the telecommunication wavelength of 1522 nm by using difference-frequency generation in a periodically-poled lithium niobate, and then observed the HOM interference between the photons. The observed visibility is $0.76\pm 0.12$ which clearly sho…
Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is widely used in quantum applications based on photonic entanglement. The efficiency of photon pair generation is often characterized by means of a $sinc(LΔk/2)$-function, where $L$ is the length of the nonlinear medium and $Δk$ the phase mismatch between the pump and down-converted fields. In theoretical investigations, the \textit{sinc} behavior of the phase mismatch has often been approximated by a Gaussian function $\exp{(-αx^2)}$ in order to derive analytical expressions for the SPDC process. Different values have been chosen in the literatur…
We consider the design of photonic circuits that make use of Ti:LiNbO$_{3}$ diffused channel waveguides for generating photons with various combinations of modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement. Down-converted photon pairs are generated via spontaneous optical parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a two-mode waveguide. We study a class of photonic circuits comprising: 1) a nonlinear periodically poled two-mode waveguide structure, 2) a set of single-mode and two-mode waveguide-based couplers arranged in such a way that they suitably separate the three photons comprising the SPDC proces…
Starting from the standard Hamiltonian describing the optical non-linear process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion, we theoretically show that the generated entangled photon-pairs carry non-negligible orbital angular momentum in the degrees of freedom of relative movement in the type-II cases due to spatial symmetry breaking. We also show that the orbital angular momentum carried by photon-pairs in these degrees of freedom escapes detection in the traditional measurement scheme, which demands development of new techniques for further experimental investigations.
What are the orbital angular momentum correlations between spatially entangled photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion? We show that the answer to this question can be given in two alternative, although complementary, ways. The answer posed in this letter explains satisfactorily the seemingly contradictory results obtained in different experiments, and theoretical approaches.
We show how to reach high fidelity NOON states with a high count rate inside optical interferometers. Recently it has been shown that by mixing squeezed and coherent light at a beamsplitter it is possible to generate NOON states of arbitrary N with a fidelity as high as 94%. (Afek I. et al. Science 328, 879 (2010)). The scheme is based on higher order interference between "quantum" down-converted light and "classical" coherent light. However, this requires optimizing the amplitude ratio of classical to quantum light thereby limiting the overall count rate for the interferometric super-resoluti…
The measurement of high-dimensional entangled states of orbital angular momentum prepared by spontaneous parametric down-conversion can be considered in two separate stages: a generation stage and a detection stage. Given a certain number of generated modes, the number of measured modes is determined by the measurement apparatus. We derive a simple relationship between the generation and detection parameters and the number of measured entangled modes.
Light with orbital angular momentum (OAM) has great potentials in both classical and quantum optical communications such as enhancing the transmission capacity of a single communication channel because of its unlimited dimensions. Based on OAM conservation in second order nonlinear interaction processes, we create a classical to quantum optical network link in OAM degree of freedoms of light via sum frequency generation (SFG) following by a spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). A coherent OAM-carrying beams at telecom wavelength 1550nm is up-converted to 525.5nm OAM-carrying beams in …
We study and experimentally implement a double-slit quantum eraser in the presence of a controlled decoherence mechanism. A two-photon state, produced in a spontaneous parametric down conversion process, is prepared in a maximally entangled polarization state. A birefringent double-slit is illuminated by one of the down-converted photons, and it acts as a single-photon two-qubits controlled not gate that couples the polarization with the transversal momentum of these photons. The other photon, that acts as a which-path marker, is sent through a Mach-Zehnder-like interferometer. When the interf…
We present the analysis of emission profile of downconverted photons from a critically phase-matched nonlinear crystal. This is done via direct imaging of down converted photons by a CMOS camera. The effects of nonlinear crystal thickness in collinear and non-collinear geometries on the down converted photon pair rate is directly observed and the experimental results show that the photon pair rate increases linearly with the crystal thickness. However, the rate of the photon pairs collected to a single mode fiber goes quadratically with the crystal length because of the cylindrical asymmetries…
We report generation of near-infrared photon pairs in fundamental spatial modes via type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO4) nonlinear waveguide supporting multiple transverse modes. This demonstrates experimentally a versatile scheme for controlling the spatial characteristics of the produced nonclassical light based on exploitation of intermodal dispersion. The down-converted photons are characterized by the measurement of the beam quality factors in the heralded regime.
We show that the quantum interference between downconverted photon pairs and photons from coherent laser light can produce a maximally path entangled N-photon output component with a fidelity greater than 90% for arbitrarily high photon numbers. A simple beam splitter operation can thus transform the 2-photon coherence of down-converted light into an almost optimal N-photon coherence.
We report the observation of correlated photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a quasi-phase matched KTiOPO4 nonlinear waveguide. The highest ratio of coincidence to single photon count rates observed in the 830 nm wavelength region exceeds 18%. This makes nonlinear waveguides a promising source of correlated photons for metrology and quantum information processing applications. We also discuss possibilities of controlling the spatial characteristics of the down-converted photons produced in multimode waveguide structures.
Coherence properties of the down-converted beams generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion are investigated in detail using an iCCD camera. Experimental results are compared with those from a theoretical model developed for pulsed pumping with a Gaussian transverse profile. The results allow to tailor the shape of correlation area of the signal and idler photons using pump-field and crystal parameters. As an example, splitting of a correlation area caused by a two-peak pump-field spectrum is experimentally studied.
The Bessel-Gaussian modal spectrum, generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion of a Gaussian pump beam, is considered. This is done by first deriving a general expression for the true probability of detecting specific transverse spatial modes for the pairs of photons generated in a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. These expressions are applied for Bessel-Gaussian modes in type I phase matching with collinear, degenerate down-converted beams. The result shows that a broad orbital angular momentum spectrum can be obtained for Bessel-Gaussian modes under certain conditions…
Photon modes have an important role in characterizing the quantum sources of light. Proper coupling of various photon modes obtained in spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process in optical fibers is essential to generate an effective source of entangled photons. The two main pre-detection factors affecting the biphoton mode coupling in SPDC are the pump beam focusing parameter and the crystal thickness. We present the numerical and experimental results on the effect of pump focusing on conditional down-converted photon modes for a Type-I BBO crystal. We experimentally verify that b…
We present an experimental demonstration to manipulate the width and position of the down-converted beam waist. Our results can be used to engineer the two-photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states (such as concentrating OAM entangled states) and generate Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes entangled states.
Photonic entanglement source and quantum memory are two basic building blocks of linear-optical quantum computation and long-distance quantum communication. In the past decades, intensive researches have been carried out, and remarkable progress, particularly based on the spontaneous parametric down-converted (SPDC) entanglement source and atomic ensembles, has been achieved. Currently, an important task towards scalable quantum information processing (QIP) is to efficiently write and read entanglement generated from a SPDC source into and out of an atomic quantum memory. Here we report the fi…
