This paper gives a criterion for detecting the entanglement of a quantum state, and uses it to study the relationship between topological and quantum entanglement. It is fundamental to view topological entanglements such as braids as entanglement operators and to associate to them unitary operators that are capable of creating quantum entanglement. The entanglement criterion is used to explore this connection. The paper discusses non-locality in the light of this criterion.
We propose one and a half criteria for determining how many measurements are needed to quantify entanglement reliably. We base these criteria on Bayesian analysis of measurement results, and apply our methods to four-qubit entanglement, but generalizations to more qubits are straightforward.
We present a method to derive separability criteria for the different classes of multiparticle entanglement, especially genuine multiparticle entanglement. The resulting criteria are necessary and sufficient for certain families of states. Further, the criteria are superior to all known entanglement criteria for many other families; also they allow the detection of bound entanglement. We next demonstrate that they are easily implementable in experiments and discuss applications to the decoherence of multiparticle entangled states.
We present unified approach to different recent entanglement criteria. Although they were developed in different ways, we show that they are all applications of a more general principle given by the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. We explain this general principle and show how to derive with it not only already known but also new entanglement criteria. We systematically investigate its potential and limits to detect bipartite and multipartite entanglement.
Entanglement criteria for general (pure or mixed) states of systems consisting of two identical fermions are introduced. These criteria are based on appropriate inequalities involving the entropy of the global density matrix describing the total system, on the one hand, and the entropy of the one particle reduced density matrix, on the other one. A majorization-related relation between these two density matrices is obtained, leading to a family of entanglement criteria based on Rényi's entropic measure. These criteria are applied to various illustrative examples of parametrized families of mix…
We derive several entanglement criteria for bipartite continuous variable quantum systems based on the Shannon entropy. These criteria are more sensitive than those involving only second-order moments, and are equivalent to well-known variance product tests in the case of Gaussian states. Furthermore, they involve only a pair of quadrature measurements, and will thus should prove extremely useful the experimental identification of entanglement.
We present a package of mathematical theorems, which allow to construct multipartite entanglement criteria. Importantly, establishing bounds for certain classes of entanglement does not take an optimization over continuous sets of states. These bonds are found from the properties of commutativity graphs of operators used in the criterion. We present two examples of criteria constructed according to our method. One of them detects genuine 5-qubit entanglement without ever referring to correlations between all five qubits.
Dicke states are a family of multi-qubit quantum states with interesting entanglement properties and have been observed in many experiments. We construct entanglement witnesses for detecting genuine multiparticle entanglement in the vicinity of these states. We use the approach of PPT mixtures to derive the conditions analytically. For nearly all cases, our criteria are stronger than all conditions previously known.
We provide a method to construct entanglement criteria for arbitrary multipartite systems of discrete or continuous variables and hybrid combinations of both. While any set of local operators generates a sufficient condition for entanglement of arbitrary quantum states, a suitable set leads to a necessary and sufficient criterion for pure states. The criteria are readily implementable with existing technology and reveal entanglement that remains undetected by the respective state-of-the-art methods for discrete and continuous variables.
We present a development of a geometric approach to entanglement indicators. The method is applied to detect genuine multiqubit entanglement. The criteria are given in form of non-linear conditions imposed on correlation tensors. Thus they involve directly observable quantities, and in some cases require only few specific measurements to find multiqubit entanglement. The non-linearity of each of the criteria allows detection of entanglement in wide classes of states. In contrast to entanglement witnesses, which in the space of Hermitian operators define a hyperplane, the new conditions define …
We derive entropic inseparability criteria for the phase space representation of quantum states. In contrast to criteria involving differential entropies of marginal phase space distributions, our criteria are based on a joint distribution known as the Husimi Q-distribution. This distribution is experimentally accessible in cold atoms, circuit QED architectures and photonic systems and bears practical advantages compared to the detection of marginals. We exemplify the strengths of our entropic approach by considering several classes of non-Gaussian states where second-order criteria fail. We s…
We derive a family of entanglement criteria for continuous variable systems based on the Rényi entropy of complementary distributions. We show that these entanglement witnesses can be more sensitive than those based on second-order moments, as well as previous tests involving the Shannon entropy [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103}, 160505 (2009)]. We extend our results to include the case of discrete sampling, and develop another set of entanglement tests using the discrete Tsallis entropy. We provide several numerical results which show that our criteria can be used to identify entanglement in a n…
With a two step optimization method of entanglement witness, we analytically propose a set of necessary and sufficient entanglement criteria for four qubit symmetric Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) diagonal states. The criterion set contains four criteria. Two of them are linear with density matrix elements. The other two criteria are nonlinear with density matrix elements. The criterion set has a nest structure. A proper subset of the criteria is necessary and sufficient for the entanglement of a proper subset of the states. We illustrate the nest structure of criterion set with the general…
In this paper, we show that an arbitrary separable state can be the output of a certain entanglement-breaking channel corresponding exactly to the input of a maximally entangled state. A necessary and sufficient separability criterion and some sufficient separability criteria from entanglement-breaking channels are given.
We present an intuitive geometrical entanglement criterion. It allows formulation of simple and experimentally friendly sufficient conditions for entanglement. The conditions are illustrated with several examples. Moreover, a generalization of our approach is a necessary and sufficient separability condition. It can be associated with a family of entanglement identifiers, which is strictly richer than the family of entanglement witnesses.
We construct a set of criteria detecting genuine multipartite entanglement in arbitrary dimensional multipartite systems. These criteria are optimally suited for detecting multipartite entanglement in n-qubit Dicke states with m-excitations. In a detailed analysis we show that the criteria are also more robust to noise than any other criterion known so far, especially with increasing system size. Furthermore it is shown that the number of required local observables scales only polynomially with size, thus making the criteria experimentally feasible.
Entanglement witnesses based on first and second moments exist in the form of spin-squeezing criteria for the detection of particle entanglement from collective measurements, and in form of modified uncertainty relations for the detection of mode entanglement or steering. By revealing a correspondence between them, we show that metrologically useful spin squeezing reveals multimode entanglement in symmetric spin states that are distributed into addressable modes. We further derive tight state-independent multipartite entanglement bounds on the spin-squeezing coefficient and point out their con…
Quantitative characterization of different entanglement detection criteria for bipartite systems is presented. We review the implication sequence of these criteria and then numerically estimate volume ratios between criteria non-violating quantum states and all quantum states. The numerical approach is based on the hit-and-run algorithm, which is applied to the convex set of all quantum states embedded into a Euclidean vector space of the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product. We demonstrate that reduction, majorization, and the Rényi-entropy-based criteria are very ineffective compared to the positiv…
We present a formalism to derive entanglement criteria beyond the Gaussian regime that can be readily tested by only homodyne detection. The measured observable is the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation. Its arbitrary functional form enables us to detect non-Gaussian entanglement even when an entanglement test based on second-order moments fails. We illustrate the power of our experimentally friendly criteria for a broad class of non-Gaussian states under realistic conditions. We also show rigorously that quantum teleportation for continuous variables employs a specific functional form …
It is known that the partial entanglement/separability violates distributive rules with respect to the operations of taking convex hull and intersection. In this note, we give criteria for three qubit partially entangled states arising from distributive rules, together with the corresponding witnesses. The criteria will be given in terms of diagonal and anti-diagonal entries. They actually characterize those partial entanglement completely when all the entries are zero except for diagonal and anti-diagonal entries. Important states like Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger diagonal states fall down in …
Following previous work, we distinguish between genuine $N$-partite entanglement and full $N$-partite inseparability. Accordingly, we derive criteria to detect genuine multipartite entanglement using continuous variable (position and momentum) measurements. Our criteria are similar but different to those based on the van Loock-Furusawa inequalities, which detect full $N$-partite inseparability. We explain how the criteria can be used to detect the genuine $N$-partite entanglement of continuous variable states generated from squeezed and vacuum state inputs, including the continuous variable Gr…
A general procedure to construct criteria for identifying genuine multipartite continuous variable entanglement is presented. It relies on the proper definition of adequate global operators describing the multipartite system, the positive partial transpose criterion of separability, and quantum mechanical uncertainty relations. As a consequence, each criterion encountered consists of a single inequality that is nicely computable and experimentally feasible, and that when violated is sufficient condition for genuine multipartite entanglement. Additionally we show that the previous work of van L…
We study the separability of symmetric bipartite quantum states and show that a single correlation measurement is sufficient to detect the entanglement of any bipartite symmetric state with a non-positive partial transpose. We also discuss entanglement conditions and entanglement witnesses for states with a positive partial transpose.
We introduce a class of inequalities based on low order correlations of operators to detect entanglement in bipartite systems. The operators may either be Hermitian or non-Hermitian and are applicable to any physical system or class of states. Testing the criteria on example systems reveals that they outperform other common correlation based criteria, such as those by Duan-Giedke-Cirac-Zoller and Hillery-Zubairy. One unusual feature of the criteria is that it includes a term involving the average of the density matrix squared, related to the purity of the system. We discuss how such a term cou…
Entanglement, one of the most intriguing aspects of quantum mechanics, marks itself into different features of quantum states. For this reason different criteria can be used for verifying entanglement. In this paper we review some of the entanglement criteria casted for continuous variable states and link them to peculiar aspects of the original debate on the famous EPR paradox. Moreover, we give a handy expression for valuating Bell-type non-locality on Gaussian states. We also present the experimental measurement of a particular realization of the Bell operator over continuous variable entan…
We revisit the genuine multipartite entanglement by a simplified method, which only involves the Schmidt decomposition and local unitary transformation. We construct a local unitary equivalent class of the tri-qubit quantum state, then use the trace norm of the whole correlation tensor as a measurement to detect genuine multipartite entanglement. By detailed examples, we show our result can detect more genuinely entangled states. Furthermore, we generalize the genuine multipartite entanglement criterion to tripartite higher-dimensional systems.
We discuss conditional Renyi and Tsallis entropies for bipartite quantum systems of finite dimension. We investigate the relation between the positivity of conditional entropies and entanglement properties. It is in particular shown that any state having a negative conditional entropy with respect to any value of the entropic parameter is distillable since it violates the reduction criterion. Moreover we show that the entanglement of Werner states in odd dimensions can neither be detected by entropic criteria nor by any other spectral criterion.
We propose entanglement criteria for multipartite systems via symmetric informationally complete (SIC) measurement and general symmetric informationally complete (GSIC) measurement. We apply these criteria to detect entanglement of multipartite states, such as the convex of Bell states, entangled states mixed with white noise. It is shown that these criteria are stronger than some existing ones.
Entanglement detection criteria are developed within the framework of the majorization formulation of uncertainty. The primary results are two theorems asserting linear and nonlinear separability criteria based on majorization relations, the violation of which would imply entanglement. Corollaries to these theorems yield infinite sets of scalar entanglement detection criteria based on quasi-entropic measures of disorder. Examples are analyzed to probe the efficacy of the derived criteria in detecting the entanglement of bipartite Werner states. Characteristics of the majorization relation as a…
We introduce an entanglement criterion to exclude full separability of quantum states. We present numerical evidence that the criterion is necessary and sufficient for the class of GHZ diagonal three-qubit states and estimate the volume of bound entangled states within this class. Finally, we extend our approach to bound entangled states which are not GHZ diagonal.
We present a general strategy to derive entanglement criteria which consists in performing a mapping from qudits to qubits that preserves the separability of the parties and SU(2) rotational invariance. Consequently, it is possible to apply the well known positive partial transpose criterion to reveal the existence of quantum correlations between qudits. We discuss some examples of entangled states that are detected using the proposed strategy. Finally, we demonstrate, using our scheme, how some variance-based entanglement witnesses can be generalized from qubits to higher dimensional spin sys…
Entanglement, quantum steering and nonlocality are distinct quantum correlations which are the resources behind various of quantum information and quantum computation applications. However, a central question of determining the precise quantitative relation among them is still unresolved. Here, we present a mapping criterion between Bell nonlocality and quantum steering in bipartite qudit-qubit system, as well as a mapping criterion between quantum steering and quantum entanglement in bipartite qubit-qudit system, starting from the fundamental concepts of quantum correlations. Precise quantita…
In this Letter, we show that the fulfillment of uncertainty relations is a sufficient criterion for a quantum-mechanically permissible state. We specifically construct two pseudo-spin observables for an arbitrary non-positive Hermitian matrix whose uncertainty relation is violated. This method enables us to systematically derive separability conditions for all negative partial-transpose states in experimentally accessible forms. In particular, generalized entanglement criteria are derived from the Schrodinger-Robertson inequalities for bipartite continuous-variable states.
We consider two classes of non-Gaussian entangled states generated from the product of number states with the action of the beamsplitter or the two-mode squeezer. It is shown that, for many of these states, the covariance matrix is compatible with the covariance matrix of separable Gaussian states and their separability cannot be verified by the measurements of the first and second moments of canonical variables. We identify a couple of continuous-variable entanglement criteria with higher order moments to verify these non-Gaussian entanglement.
We show that any state which violates the computable cross norm (or realignment) criterion for separability also violates the separability criterion of the local uncertainty relations. The converse is not true. The local uncertainty relations provide a straightforward construction of nonlinear entanglement witnesses for the cross norm criterion.
We identify a general criterion for detecting entanglement of pure bipartite quantum states describing a system of two identical particles. Such a criterion is based both on the consideration of the Slater-Schmidt number of the fermionic and bosonic analog of the Schmidt decomposition and on the evaluation of the von Neumann entropy of the one-particle reduced statistical operators.
The problem of detecting non-classical correlations of states of many qudits is incomparably more involved than in a case of qubits. The reason is that for qubits we have a convenient description of the system by the means of the well-studied correlation tensor. Simply, the complete information about the state can be encoded in mean values of dichotomic measurements. WE demonstrate that for three-dimensional quantum subsystems we are able to formulate nonlinear entanglement criteria of the state with existing formalisms. We also point out where the idea for constructing these criteria fails fo…
Employing a recently proposed separability criterion we develop analytical lower bounds for the concurrence and for the entanglement of formation of bipartite quantum systems. The separability criterion is based on a nondecomposable positive map which operates on state spaces with even dimension N >= 4, and leads to a class of nondecomposable optimal entanglement witnesses. It is shown that the bounds derived here complement and improve the existing bounds obtained from the criterion of positive partial transposition and from the realignment criterion.
We present a general framework that reveals substructures of genuine multipartite entanglement. Via simple inequalities it is possible to discriminate different sets of multipartite qubit states. These inequalities are beneficial regarding experimental examinations as only local measurements are required. Furthermore, the number of observables scales favorably with system size. In exemplary cases we demonstrate the noise resistance and discuss implementations.
We explore the subtle relationships between partial separability and entanglement of subsystems in multiqubit quantum states and give experimentally accessible conditions that distinguish between various classes and levels of partial separability in a hierarchical order. These conditions take the form of bounds on the correlations of locally orthogonal observables. Violations of such inequalities give strong sufficient criteria for various forms of partial inseparability and multiqubit entanglement. The strength of these criteria is illustrated by showing that they are stronger than several ot…
Entanglement criteria for an $n$-partite quantum system with continuous variables are formulated in terms of Rényi entropies. Rényi entropies are widely used as a good information measure due to many nice properties. Derived entanglement criteria are based on several mathematical results such as the Hausdorff-Young inequality, Young's inequality for convolution and its converse. From the historical viewpoint, the formulations of these results with sharp constants were obtained comparatively recently. Using the position and momentum observables of subsystems, one can build two total-system meas…
We introduce the concept of entanglement width as measure of the spatial distribution of entanglement in multiparticle systems. We develop criteria to detect the width of entanglement using global observables such as energy and magnetic susceptibility. Therefore, the introduced entanglement criteria can be applied to systems where addressing of single particles is not possible. We apply the criteria to different examples such as the J1-J2- Heisenberg model and point out the difference between entanglement depth and entanglement width.
We use quantum entanglement witnesses derived from Gaussian operators to study the separable criteria of continuous variable states. We transform the validity of a Gaussian witness to a Bosonic Gaussian channel problem. It follows that the maximal means of two-mode and some four-mode Gaussian operators over product pure states are achieved by vacuum (or coherent states and squeezed states) according to the properties of Bosonic Gaussian channels. Then we have necessary and sufficient criteria of separability not only for Gaussian quantum states, but also for non-Gaussian states prepared by pho…
We develop criteria to detect three classes of nonlocality that have been shown by Wiseman et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 140402 (2007)] to be nonequivalent: entanglement, EPR steering, and the failure of local hidden-variable theories. We use the approach of Cavalcanti et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 210405 (2007)] for continuous variables to develop the nonlocality criteria for arbitrary spin observables defined on a discrete Hilbert space. The criteria thus apply to multisite qudits, i.e., systems of fixed dimension d, and take the form of inequalities. We find that the spin moment inequalities …
Physical transformations are described by linear maps that are completely positive and trace preserving (CPTP). However, maps that are positive (P) but not completely positive (CP) are instrumental to derive separability/entanglement criteria. Moreover, the properties of such maps can be linked to entanglement properties of the states they detect. Here, we extend the results presented in [Phys. Rev A 93, 042335 (2016)], where sufficient separability criteria for bipartite systems were derived. In particular, we analyze the entanglement depth of an $N$-qubit system by proposing linear maps that…
We provide a novel criterion for identifying quantum correlation, which allows us to find connections between Bell type inequalities, entanglement detection, and correlation. We utilize the criterion to construct witness operators that can detect genuine multi-qubit entanglement with fewer local measurements. The connection between identifications of quantum correlation and Mermin's inequality is discussed. Detection of genuine four-level tripartite entanglement with two local measurement settings is shown in the same manner. Further, through the criterion of quantum correlation, we derive a n…
Entanglement detection is essential in quantum information science and quantum many-body physics. It has been proved that entanglement exists almost surely for a random quantum state, while the realizations of effective entanglement criteria usually consume exponential resources, and efficient criteria often perform poorly without prior knowledge. This fact implies a fundamental limitation might exist in the detectability of entanglement. In this work, we formalize this limitation as a fundamental trade-off between the efficiency and effectiveness of entanglement criteria via a systematic meth…
We propose an entanglement criterion, specially designed for mixed states, based on uncertainty relation and the Wigner-Yanase skew information. The variances in this uncertainty relation does not involve any classical mixing uncertainty, and thus turns out to be purely of quantum mechanical nature. We show that any mixed entangled state can be characterized by our criterion. We demonstrate its utility for several generalized mixed entangled state including Werner states and it turns out to be stronger than any other known criterion in identifying the correct domain of relevant parameters for …
The study of the entanglement properties of systems of N fermions has attracted considerable interest during the last few years. Various separability criteria for pure states of N identical fermions have been recently discussed but, excepting the case of two-fermions systems, these criteria are difficult to implement and of limited value from the practical point of view. Here we advance simple necessary and sufficient separability criteria for pure states of N identical fermions. We found that to be identified as separable a state has to comply with one single identity involving either the pur…
