Generation of Wigner functions of Landau levels and determination of their symmetries and generic properties are achieved in the autonomous framework of deformation quantization. Transformation properties of diagonal Wigner functions under space inversion, time reversal and parity transformations are specified and their invariance under a four-parameter subgroup of symplectic transformations are established. A generating function for all Wigner functions is developed and this has been identified as the phase-space coherent state for Landau levels. Integrated forms of generating function are used in generating explicit expressions of marginal probability densities on all possible two dimensional phase-space planes. Phase-space realization of unitary similarity and gauge transformations as well as some general implications for the Wigner function theory are presented.
We discuss the problem of finding "marginal" distributions within different tomographic approaches to quantum state measurement, and we establish analytical connections among them.
In order to determine the Wigner function uniquely, we introduce a new condition which ensures that the Wigner function has correct marginal distributions along tilted lines. For a system in $N$ dimensional Hilbert space, whose "phase space" is a lattice with $N^2$ sites, we get different results depending on whether $N$ is odd or even. Under the new condition, the Wigner function is determined if $N$ is an odd number, but it does not exist if $N$ is even.
Following an approach based on generating function method phase space characteristics of Landau system are studied in the autonomous framework of deformation quantization. Coherent state property of generating functions is established and marginal probability densities along canonical coordinate lines are derived. Well defined analogs of inner product, Cauchy-Bunyakowsy-Schwarz inequality and state functional have been defined in phase space and they have been used in analyzing the uncertainty structures. The general form of the uncertainty relation for two real-valued functions is derived and…
In every state of a quantum particle, Wigner's quasidistribution is the unique quasidistribution on the phase space with the correct marginal distributions for position, momentum, and all their linear combinations.
Dirac fermions in graphene may experiment dispersive pseudo-Landau levels due to a homogeneous pseudomagnetic field and a position-dependent Fermi velocity induced by strain. In this paper, we study the (semi-classical) dynamics of these particles under such a physical context from an approach of coherent states. For this purpose we use a Landau-like gauge to built Perelomov coherent states by the action of a non-unitary displacement operator $D(α)$ on the fundamental state of the system. We analyze the time evolution of the probability density and the generalized uncertainty principle as well…
One of the most prominent quasiprobability functions in quantum mechanics is the Wigner function that gives the right marginal probability functions if integrated over position or momentum. Here we depart from the definition of the position-momentum Wigner function to, in analogy, construct a number-phase Wigner function that, if summed over photon numbers gives the correct phase distribution and integrated over phase gives the right photon distribution.
Wigner's marginal probability theory is revisited, and systematically applied to n-particle correlation measurements. A set of Bell inequalities whose corollaries are Hardy contradiction and its generalisation are derived with intuitive graphical analysis.
We construct the quasi probability distribution $W(p,q)$ on even dimensional vector space with marginality and invariance under the transformation induced by projective representation of the group ${\rm Sp}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ whose elements correspond to linear canonical transformation. On even dimensional vector space, non-existence of such a quasi probability distribution whose arguments take physical values was shown in our previous paper(Phys.Rev.A{\bf 65} 032105(2002)). For this reason we study a quasi probability distribution $W(p,q)$ whose arguments $q$ and $p$ take not only $N$ physical va…
We study a generalization of the Wigner function to arbitrary tuples of hermitian operators, which is a distribution uniquely characterized by the property that the marginals for all linear combinations of the given operators agree with the quantum mechanical distributions. Its role as a joint quasi-probability distribution is underlined by the property that its support always lies in the set of expectation value tuples of the operators. We characterize the set of singularities and positivity, and provide some basic examples.
A statistical multistream description of quantum plasmas is formulated, using the Wigner-Poisson system as dynamical equations. A linear stability analysis of this system is carried out, and it is shown that a Landau-like damping of plane wave perturbations occurs due to the broadening of the background Wigner function that arises as a consequence of statistical variations of the wave function phase. The Landau-like damping is shown to suppress instabilities of the one- and two-stream type.
The Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism for quantum particle with discrete internal degrees of freedom is developed. A one to one correspondence between operators in the Hilbert space $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{3})\otimes{\mathcal{H}}^{(s+1)}$ and functions on the phase space $\mathbb{R}^{3}\times\mathbb{R}^{3}\times \{0,...,s\} \times\{0,...,s\}$ is found. The expressions for the Stratonovich-Weyl quantizer, star product and Wigner functions of such systems for arbitrary values of spin are obtained in detail. As examples the Landau levels and the corresponding Wigner functions for a spin $\frac{1}{2}$ nonrel…
By means of a well-grounded mapping scheme linking Schwinger unitary operators and generators of the special unitary group $\mathrm{SU(N)}$, it is possible to establish a self-consistent theoretical framework for finite-dimensional discrete phase spaces which has the discrete $\mathrm{SU(N)}$ Wigner function as a legitimate by-product. In this paper, we apply these results with the aim of putting forth a detailed study on the discrete $\mathrm{SU(2)} \otimes \mathrm{SU(2)}$ and $\mathrm{SU(4)}$ Wigner functions, in straight connection with experiments involving, among other things, the tomogra…
The problem of constructing physically and mathematically well-defined Wigner functions for the canonical pair angle and angular momentum is solved. While a key element for the construction of Wigner functions for the planar phase space (q,p) in R^2 is the Heisenberg-Weyl group, the corresponding group for the cylindrical phase space (theta,p) in S^1 x R is the Euclidean group E(2) of the plane and its unitary representations. Here the angle theta is replaced by the pair (cos theta, sin theta) which corresponds uniquely to the points on the unit circle. The main structural properties of the Wi…
In contrast to classical physics, the language of quantum mechanics involves operators and wave functions (or, more generally, density operators). However, in 1932, Wigner formulated quantum mechanics in terms of a distribution function $W(q,p)$, the marginals of which yield the correct quantum probabilities for $q$ and $p$ separately \cite{wigner}. Its usefulness stems from the fact that it provides a re-expression of quantum mechanics in terms of classical concepts so that quantum mechanical expectation values are now expressed as averages over phase-space distribution functions. In other wo…
We consider the problem of setting up the Wigner distribution for states of a quantum system whose configuration space is a Lie group. The basic properties of Wigner distributions in the familiar Cartesian case are systematically generalised to accommodate new features which arise when the configuration space changes from $n$-dimensional Euclidean space ${\cal R}^n$ to a Lie group $G$. The notion of canonical momentum is carefully analysed, and the meanings of marginal probability distributions and their recovery from the Wigner distribution are clarified. For the case of compact $G$ an explic…
Recent experimental advances in the reconstruction of the Wigner function (WF) for electronic systems have led us to consider the possibility of employing this theoretical tool in the analysis of electron dynamics of uniaxially strained graphene. In this paper, we study the effect of strain on the WF of electrons in graphene under the interaction of a uniform magnetic field. This mechanical deformation modifies drastically the shape of the Wigner function of Landau and coherent states. The WF has a different behavior straining the material along the zigzag direction in comparison with the armc…
We study a generalization of the Wigner function to arbitrary tuples of hermitian operators. We show that for any collection of hermitian operators A1...An , and any quantum state there is a unique joint distribution on R^n, with the property that the marginals of all linear combinations of the operators coincide with their quantum counterpart. In other words, we consider the inverse Radon transform of the exact quantum probability distributions of all linear combinations. We call it the Wigner distribution, because for position and momentum this property defines the standard Wigner function. …
This article was written for the Logic in Computer Science column in the February 2015 issue of the Bulletin of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science. The intended audience is general computer science audience. The uncertainty principle asserts a limit to the precision with which position x and momentum p of a particle can be known simultaneously. You may know the probability distributions of x and p individually but the joint distribution makes no physical sense. Yet Wigner exhibited such a joint distribution f(x,p). There was, however, a little trouble with it: some of it…
We demonstrate the reconstruction of the Wigner function from marginal distributions of the motion of a single trapped particle using homodyne detection. We show that it is possible to generate quantum states of levitated optomechanical systems even under the effect of continuous measurement by the trapping laser light. We describe the opto-mechanical coupling for the case of the particle trapped by a free-space focused laser beam, explicitly for the case without an optical cavity. We use the scheme to reconstruct the Wigner function of experimental data in perfect agreement with the expected …
We propose a Wigner quasiprobability distribution function for Hamiltonian systems in spaces of constant curvature --in this paper on hyperboloids--, which returns the correct marginals and has the covariance of the Shapiro functions under SO(D,1) transformations. To the free systems obeying the Laplace-Beltrami equation on the hyperboloid, we add a conic-oscillator potential in the hyperbolic coordinate. As an example, we analyze the 1-dimensional case on a hyperbola branch, where this conic-oscillator is the Poschl-Teller potential. We present the analytical solutions and plot the computed r…
We analyze two two-mode continuous variable separable states with the same marginal states. We adopt the definition of classicality in the form of well-defined positive Wigner function describing the state and find that although the states possess positive local Wigner functions, they exhibit negative Wigner functions for the global states. Using the negativity of Wigner function as an indicator of nonclassicality, we show that despite these states possess different negativities of the Wigner function, they do not reveal this difference as phase space nonclassicalities such as negativity of th…
We set up Wigner distributions for $N$ state quantum systems following a Dirac inspired approach. In contrast to much of the work on this case, requiring a $2N\times 2N$ phase space, particularly when $N$ is even, our approach is uniformly based on an $N\times N $ phase space grid and thereby avoids the necessity of having to invoke a `quadrupled' phase space and hence the attendant redundance. Both $N$ odd and even cases are analysed in detail and it is found that there are striking differences between the two. While the $N$ odd case permits full implementation of the marginals property, the …
One of the lowest-order corrections to Gaussian quantum mechanics in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces are Airy functions: a uniformization of the stationary phase method applied in the path integral perspective. We introduce a "periodized stationary phase method" to discrete Wigner functions of systems with odd prime dimension and show that the $\fracπ{8}$ gate is the discrete analog of the Airy function. We then establish a relationship between the stabilizer rank of states and the number of quadratic Gauss sums necessary in the periodized stationary phase method. This allows us to develop…
We compute Wigner functions for the harmonic oscillator including corrections from generalized uncertainty principles (GUPs), and study the corresponding marginal probability densities and other properties. We show that the GUP corrections to the Wigner functions can be significant, and comment on their potential measurability in the laboratory.
We prove a theorem, using the density functional approach and relying on a classical result by Lieb and Simon on Thomas-Fermi model, showing that in the thermodynamic limit bulk matter is at most semiclassical and coherence preserving. The connection between quantum fluid dynamics and density functional theory in the formulation due to Kohn and Sham play a significant role leading to a Vlasov-Poisson system of equations for the Wigner function. Coherence stability is achieved by noting that small oscillations in bulk matter are damped by Landau damping. In some conditions the initial Wigner fu…
Asymptotic time evolution of a wave packet describing a non-relativistic particle incident on a potential barrier is considered, using the Wigner phase-space distribution. The distortion of the trasmitted wave packet is determined by two time-like parameters, given by the energy derivative of the complex transmission amplitude. The result is consistent with various definitions of the tunneling time (e.g. the Büttiker-Landauer time, the complex time and Wigner's phase time). The speed-up effect and the negative dispersion are discussed, and new experimental implications are considered.
The Wigner function for one and two-mode quantum systems is explicitely expressed in terms of the marginal distribution for the generic linearly transformed quadratures. Then, also the density operator of those systems is written in terms of the marginal distribution of these quadratures. Some examples to apply this formalism, and a reduction to the usual optical homodyne tomography are considered.
We analyze the Stern-Gerlach experiment in phase space with the help of the matrix Wigner function, which includes the spin degree of freedom. Such analysis allows for an intuitive visualization of the quantum dynamics of the apparatus. We include the interaction with the environment, as described by the Caldeira-Leggett model. The diagonal terms of the matrix provide us with information about the two components of the state, that arise from interaction with the magnetic field gradient. In particular, from the marginals of these components, we obtain an analytical formula for the position and …
Highly tunable platforms for realizing topological phases of matter are emerging from atomic and photonic systems, and offer the prospect of designing interactions between particles. The shape of the potential, besides playing an important role in the competition between different fractional quantum Hall phases, can also trigger the transition to symmetry-broken phases, or even to phases where topological and symmetry-breaking order coexist. Here, we explore the phase diagram of an interacting bosonic model in the lowest Landau level at half-filling as two-body interactions are tuned. Apart fr…
We present and demonstrate a method for optical homodyne tomography based on the inverse Radon transform. Different from the usual filtered back-projection algorithm, this method uses an appropriate polynomial series to expand the Wigner function and the marginal distribution and discretize Fourier space. We show that this technique solves most technical difficulties encountered with kernel deconvolution based methods and reconstructs overall better and smoother Wigner functions. We also give estimators of the reconstruction errors for both methods and show improvement in noise handling proper…
