We set up Wigner distributions for $N$ state quantum systems following a Dirac inspired approach. In contrast to much of the work on this case, requiring a $2N\times 2N$ phase space, particularly when $N$ is even, our approach is uniformly based on an $N\times N $ phase space grid and thereby avoids the necessity of having to invoke a `quadrupled' phase space and hence the attendant redundance. Both $N$ odd and even cases are analysed in detail and it is found that there are striking differences between the two. While the $N$ odd case permits full implementation of the marginals property, the even case does so only in a restricted sense. This has the consequence that in the even case one is led to several equally good definitions of the Wigner distributions as opposed to the odd case where the choice turns out to be unique.
We show how the entropy operators for two subsystems may be calculated. In the case of the atom-field interaction we obtain the associated Wigner function for the entropy operator for the quantized field.
Using a position operator obtained for spin 1 particles by the present author and Wigner, we obtain a quantum relativistic result for the hidden momentum force experienced by particles with structure. In particular, our result applies to the hidden magnetic forces manifest in some problems of electromagnetism. We also discuss spin and orbital angular momentum operators, as well as Wigner rotation.
We study a generalization of the Wigner function to arbitrary tuples of hermitian operators, which is a distribution uniquely characterized by the property that the marginals for all linear combinations of the given operators agree with the quantum mechanical distributions. Its role as a joint quasi-probability distribution is underlined by the property that its support always lies in the set of expectation value tuples of the operators. We characterize the set of singularities and positivity, and provide some basic examples.
As a natural extension of Fan's paper (arXiv: 0903.1769vl [quant-ph]) by employing the formula of operators' Weyl ordering expansion and the bipartite entangled state representation we find new two-fold complex integration transformation about the Wigner operator (in its entangled form) in phase space quantum mechanics and its inverse transformation. In this way, some operator ordering problems can be solved and the contents of phase space quantum mechanics can be enriched.
The probability distribution for finding a state of the radiation field in a particular phase is described by a multitude of theoretical formalisms; the phase-sensitivity of the Wigner quasi-probability distribution being one of them. We construct a hermitian phase operator for this Wigner phase. We show that this operator is complete and also elucidate a set of complete but non-orthogonal states that seems to be naturally associated with such an operator. Further we show that our operator satisfies a weak equivalence relation with the Pegg-Barnett operator, thus showing that the essential pha…
Based on the technique of integration within an ordered product (IWOP) of operators we introduce the Fresnel operator for converting Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian into time-independent harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. The Fresnel operator with the parameters A,B,C,D corresponds to classical optical Fresnel transformation, these parameters are the solution to a set of partial differential equations set up in the above mentioned converting process. In this way the exact wavefunction solution of the Schrödinger equation governed by the Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian is obtained, which represents a squ…
We show that for general deformations of SU(2) algebra, the dynamics in terms of ladder operators is preserved. This is done for a system of precessing magnetic dipole in magnetic field, using the unitary phase operator which arises in the polar decomposition of SU(2) operators. It is pointed out that there is a single phase operator dynamics underlying the dynamics of usual and deformed ladder operators.
For Dirac equation, operator-invariants containing explicit time-dependence in parallel to known time-dependent invariants of nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation are introduced and discussed. As an example, a free Dirac particle is considered and new invariants are constructed for it. The integral of motion, which is initial Newton-Wigner position operator, is obtained explicitly for a free Dirac particle. For such particle with kick modeled by delta-function of time, the time-depending integral, which has physical meaning of initial momentum, is found.
Drawing inspiration from Dirac's work on functions of non commuting observables, we develop a fresh approach to phase space descriptions of operators and the Wigner distribution in quantum mechanics. The construction presented here is marked by its economy, naturalness and more importantly, by its potential for extensions and generalisations to situations where the underlying configuration space is non Cartesian.
The relativistic phase-space representation by means of the usual position and momentum operators for a class of observables with Weyl symbols independent of charge variable (i.e. with any combination of position and momentum) is proposed. The dynamical equation coincides with its analogue in the non-local theory (generalization of the Newton-Wigner position operator approach) under conditions when particles creation is impossible. Differences reveal themselves in specific constraints on possible initial conditions.
Using operators' Weyl ordering expansion formula (Hong-yi Fan,\emph{\}J. Phys. A 25 (1992) 3443) we find new two-fold integration transformation about the Wigner operator $Δ(q',p')$ ($q$-number transform) in phase space quantum mechanics, \[ \iint_{-\infty}^\infty dp' dq'/πΔ(q',p') e^{-2i(p-p') (q-q')} =δ(p-P) δ(q-Q), \] and its inverse \[\iint_{-\infty}^\infty dq dp δ(p-P) δ(q-Q) e^{2i(p-p') (q-q')}=Δ(q',p'), \] where $Q,$ $P$ are the coordinate and momentum operators, respectively. We apply it to studying mutual converting formulas among $Q-P$ ordering, $P-Q$ ordering and Weyl ordering of op…
We systematically derive a linear quantum collision operator for the spinorial Wigner transport equation from the dynamics of a composite quantum system. For suitable two particle interaction potentials, the particular matrix form of the collision operator describes spin decoherence or even spin depolarization as well as relaxation towards a certain momentum distribution in the long time limit. It is demonstrated that in the semiclassical limit the spinorial Wigner equation gives rise to several semiclassical spin-transport models. As an example, we derive the Bloch equations as well as the sp…
Phase space reflection operators lie at the core of the Wigner-Weyl representation of density operators and observables. The role of the corresponding classical reflections is known in the construction of semiclassical approximations to Wigner functions of pure eigenstates and their coarsegrained microcanonical superpositions, which are not restricted to classically integrable systems. In their active role as unitary operators, they generate transitions between pairs of eigenstates specified by transition Wigner functions (or cross-Wigner functions): The square modulus of the transition Wigner…
An integral of the Wigner function of a wavefunction |psi >, over some region S in classical phase space is identified as a (quasi) probability measure (QPM) of S, and it can be expressed by the |psi > average of an operator referred to as the region operator (RO). Transformation theory is developed which provides the RO for various phase space regions such as point, line, segment, disk and rectangle, and where all those ROs are shown to be interconnected by completely positive trace increasing maps. The latter are realized by means of unitary operators in Fock space extended by 2D vector spac…
A relativistic spin operator is to be the difference between the total and orbital angular momentum. As the unique position operator for a localized state, the remarkable Newton-Wigner position operator, which has all desirable commutation relations as a position operator, can give a proper spin operator. Historically important three spin operators respectively proposed by Bogolubov et al., Pryce, and Foldy-Woutheysen are investigated to manifest a corresponding spin operator to the Newton-Wigner position operator. We clarify a unique spin operator in relativistic quantum mechanics described b…
We introduce a new class of unitary transformations based on the su(1,1) Lie algebra that generalizes, for certain particular representations of its generators, well-known squeezing transformations in quantum optics. To illustrate our results, we focus on the two-mode bosonic representation and show how the parametric amplifier model can be modified in order to generate such a generalized squeezing operator. Furthermore, we obtain a general expression for the bipartite Wigner function which allows us to identify two distinct sources of entanglement, here labelled by dynamical and kinematical e…
We consider in what sense quantum tunnelling is associated with non-classical probabilistic behaviour. We use the Wigner function quasi-probability description of quantum states. We give a definition of tunnelling that allows us to say whether in a given scenario there is tunnelling or not. We prove that this can only happen if either the Wigner function is negative and/or a certain measurement operator which we call the tunnelling rate operator has a negative Wigner function.
The Wigner Phase Operator (WPO) is identified as an operator valued measure (OVM) and its eigen states are obtained. An operator satisfying the canonical commutation relation with the Wigner phase operator is also constructed and this establishes a Wigner distribution based operator formalism for the Wigner Phase Distribution. The operator satisfying the canonical commutation relation with the Wigner Phase Operator valued measure (WP-OVM) is found to be not the usual number operator. We show a way to overcome the non-positivity problem of the WP-OVM by defining a positive OVM by means of a pro…
A finite Hilbert space can be associated to a periodic phase space, that is, a torus. A finite subgroup of operators corresponding to reflections and translations on the torus form respectively the basis for the discrete Weyl representation, including the Wigner function, and for its Fourier conjugate, the chord representation. They are invariant under Clifford transformations and obey analogous product rules to the continuous representations, so allowing for the calculation of expectations and correlations for observables. We here import new identities from the continuum for products of pure …
In contrast to classical physics, the language of quantum mechanics involves operators and wave functions (or, more generally, density operators). However, in 1932, Wigner formulated quantum mechanics in terms of a distribution function $W(q,p)$, the marginals of which yield the correct quantum probabilities for $q$ and $p$ separately \cite{wigner}. Its usefulness stems from the fact that it provides a re-expression of quantum mechanics in terms of classical concepts so that quantum mechanical expectation values are now expressed as averages over phase-space distribution functions. In other wo…
We study a generalization of the Wigner function to arbitrary tuples of hermitian operators. We show that for any collection of hermitian operators A1...An , and any quantum state there is a unique joint distribution on R^n, with the property that the marginals of all linear combinations of the operators coincide with their quantum counterpart. In other words, we consider the inverse Radon transform of the exact quantum probability distributions of all linear combinations. We call it the Wigner distribution, because for position and momentum this property defines the standard Wigner function. …
The Weyl-Wigner map yields the entire structure of Moyal quantum mechanics directly from the standard operator formulation. The covariant generalization of Moyal theory, also known as Vey quantum mechanics, was presented in the literature many years ago. However, a derivation of the formalism directly from standard operator quantum mechanics, clarifying the relation between the two formulations is still missing. In this paper we present a covariant generalization of the Weyl order prescription and of the Weyl-Wigner map and use them to derive Vey quantum mechanics directly from the standard op…
We show that the Truncated Wigner Approximation developed in the flat phase-space is mapped into a Lindblad-type evolution with an indefinite metric in the space of linear operators. As a result, the classically evolved Wigner function corresponds to a non-positive operator $\hat{R}(t)$, which does not describe a physical state. The rate of appearance of negative eigenvalues of $\hat{R}(t)$ can be efficiently estimated. The short-time dynamics of the Kerr and second harmonic generation Hamiltonains are discussed.
We propose the Wigner separability entropy as a measure of complexity of a quantum state. This quantity measures the number of terms that effectively contribute to the Schmidt decomposition of the Wigner function with respect to a chosen phase space decomposition. We prove that the Wigner separability entropy is equal to the operator space entanglement entropy, measuring entanglement in the space of operators, and, for pure states, to twice the entropy of entanglement. The quantum to classical correspondence between the Wigner separability entropy and the separability entropy of the classical …
A complete solution to the problem of setting up Wigner distribution for N-level quantum systems is presented. The scheme makes use of some of the ideas introduced by Dirac in the course of defining functions of noncommuting observables and works uniformly for all N. Further, the construction developed here has the virtue of being essentially input-free in that it merely requires finding a square root of a certain N^2 x N^2 complex symmetric matrix, a task which, as is shown, can always be accomplished analytically. As an illustration, the case of a single qubit is considered in some detail an…
We study the tomography of propagators for spin systems in the context of finite-dimensional Wigner representations, which completely characterize and visualize operators using shapes assembled from linear combinations of spherical harmonics. The Wigner representation of a propagator can be experimentally recovered by measuring expectation values of rotated axial spherical tensor operators in an augmented system with an additional ancilla qubit. The methodology is experimentally demonstrated for standard one-qubit quantum gates using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In particular, this…
Using linear invariant operators in a constructive way we find the most general thermal density operator and Wigner function for time-dependent generalized oscillators. The general Wigner function has five free parameters and describes the thermal Wigner function about a classical trajectory in phase space. The contour of the Wigner function depicts an elliptical orbit with a constant area moving about the classical trajectory, whose eccentricity determines the squeezing of the initial vacuum.
The Lindblad equation governs general markovian evolution of the density operator in an open quantum system. An expression for the rate of change of the Wigner function as a sum of integrals is one of the forms of the Weyl representation for this equation. The semiclassical description of the Wigner function in terms of chords, each with its classically defined amplitude and phase, is thus inserted in the integrals, which leads to an explicit differential equation for the Wigner function. All the Lindblad operators are assumed to be represented by smooth phase space functions corresponding to …
The integral of the Wigner function of a quantum mechanical system over a region or its boundary in the classical phase plane, is called a quasiprobability integral. Unlike a true probability integral, its value may lie outside the interval [0,1]. It is characterized by a corresponding selfadjoint operator, to be called a region or contour operator as appropriate, which is determined by the characteristic function of that region or contour. The spectral problem is studied for commuting families of region and contour operators associated with concentric disks and circles of given radius a. Thei…
By introducing the thermo entangled state representation, we convert the calculation of Wigner function (WF) of density operator to an overlap between "two pure" states in a two-mode enlarged Fock space. Furthermore, we derive a new WF evolution formula of any initial state in self-Kerr Medium with photon loss and find that the photon number distribution for any initial state is independent of the coupling factor with Kerr Medium, where the number state is not affected by the Kerr nonlinearity and evolves into a density operator of binomial distribution.
We study the tomography of multispin quantum states in the context of finite-dimensional Wigner representations. An arbitrary operator can be completely characterized and visualized using multiple shapes assembled from linear combinations of spherical harmonics [A. Garon, R. Zeier, and S. J. Glaser, Phys. Rev. A 91, 042122 (2015)]. We develop a general methodology to experimentally recover these shapes by measuring expectation values of rotated axial spherical tensor operators and provide an interpretation in terms of fictitious multipole potentials. Our approach is experimentally demonstrated…

Quantum mechanics of photon is investigated. The Białynicki -- Birula scalar product $\langle {\bf Ψ}_{1}|{\bf Ψ}_{2}\rangle_{BB}$ and the generalized Hermitian conjugation $\widehatγ^{+\hspace{-0.45em}+}$ of linear operator $\widehatγ$ are discussed. Quantum description of light on a phase space is developed. A photon Wigner function is built.

The general Weyl -- Wigner formalism in finite dimensional phase spaces is investigated. Then this formalism is specified to the case of symmetric ordering of operators in an odd -- dimensional Hilbert space. A respective Wigner function on the discrete phase space is found and the limit, when the dimension of Hilbert space tends to infinity, is considered. It is shown that this limit gives the number -- phase Wigner function in quantum optics. Analogous results for the `almost' symmetric ordering in an even -- dimensional Hilbert space are obtained. Relations between the discrete Wigner funct…
We report a direct measurement of the Wigner function characterizing the quantum state of a light mode. The experimental scheme is based on the representation of the Wigner function as an expectation value of a displaced photon number parity operator. This allowed us to scan the phase space point-by-point, and obtain the complete Wigner function without using any numerical reconstruction algorithms.
An accurate description of 2-D quantum transport in a double-gate metal oxide semiconductor filed effect transistor (dgMOSFET) requires a high-resolution solver to a coupled system of the 4-D Wigner equation and 2-D Poisson equation. In this paper, we propose an operator splitting spectral method to evolve such Wigner-Poisson system in 4-D phase space with high accuracy. After an operator splitting of the Wigner equation, the resulting two sub-equations can be solved analytically with spectral approximation in phase space. Meanwhile, we adopt a Chebyshev spectral method to solve the Poisson eq…
We study numerically the coordinate wave functions and the Wigner functions of the coherent phase states (CPS), paying the main attention to their differences from the standard (Klauder--Glauber--Sudarshan) coherent states, especially in the case of high mean values of the number operator. In this case, the CPS can possess a strong coordinate (or momentum) squeezing, which is, roughly, twice weaker than for the vacuum squeezed states. The Robertson--Schrödinger invariant uncertainty product in the CPS logarithmically increases with the mean value of the number operator (whereas it is constant …
Based on Takahashi-Umezawa thermo field dynamics and the order-invariance of Weyl ordered operators under similar transformations, we present a new approach to deriving the exact Wigner functions of thermo number state, photon subtracted and added thermo vacuum state. We find that these Wigner functions are related to the Gaussian-Laguerre type functions of temperature, whose statistical properties are then analysed.
We analyze the Wigner function constructed on the basis of the discrete rotation and displacement operators labeled with elements of the underlying finite field. We separately discuss the case of odd and even characteristics and analyze the algebraic origin of the non uniqueness of the representation of the Wigner function. Explicit expressions for the Wigner kernel are given in both cases.
Corresponding to optical Fresnel transformation characteristic of ray transfer matrix elements (A;B;C;D); AD-BC = 1, there exists Fresnel operator F(A;B;C;D) in quantum optics, we show that under the Fresnel transformation the pure position density |x><x| becomes the tomographic density |x>_rs,rs_<x|, which is just the Radon transform of the Wigner operator, i.e., F|x><x|F^(+) = |x>_rs,rs_<x|= \int dx'dp'delta[x-(Dx'-Bp')]*Wigner operator where s, r are the complex-value expression of (A;B;C;D). So the probability distribution for the Fresnel quadrature phase is the tomography (Radon transform…
Given a real-valued phase-space function, it is a nontrivial task to determine whether it corresponds to a Wigner distribution for a physically acceptable quantum state. This topic has been of fundamental interest for long, and in a modern application, it can be related to the problem of entanglement detection for multi-mode cases. In this paper, we present a hierarchy of complete conditions for a physically realizable Wigner distribution. Our derivation is based on the normally-ordered expansion, in terms of annihilation andcreation operators, of the quasi-density operator corresponding to th…
Notwithstanding radical conceptual differences between classical and quantum mechanics, it is usually assumed that physical measurements concern observables common to both theories . Not so with the eigenvalues ($\pm 1$) of the parity operator. The effect of such a measurement on a mixture of even and odd states of the harmonic oscillator is akin to separating at a single stroke a pair of shuffled card decks: the result is a set of definite parity, though otherwise mixed. The Wigner function should be a sensitive probe for this phenomenon, for it can be interpreted as the expectation value of …
The Heisenberg evolution of a given unitary operator corresponds classically to a fixed canonical transformation that is viewed through a moving coordinate system. The operators that form the bases of the Weyl representation and its Fourier transform, the chord representation, are, respectively, unitary reflection and translation operators. Thus, the general semiclassical study of unitary operators allows us to propagate arbitrary operators, including density operators, i.e. the Wigner function. The various propagation kernels are different representations of the superoperators which act on th…
The nonnegativity of the density operator of a state is faithfully coded in its Wigner distribution, and this places constraints on the moments of the Wigner distribution. These constraints are presented in a canonically invariant form which is both concise and explicit. Since the conventional uncertainty principle is such a constraint on the first and second moments, our result constitutes a generalization of the same to all orders. Possible application in quantum state reconstruction using optical homodyne tomography is noted.
The Wigner function shares several properties with classical distribution functions on phase space, but is not positive-definite. The integral of the Wigner function over a given region of phase space can therefore lie outside the interval [0,1]. The problem of finding best-possible upper and lower bounds for a given region is the problem of finding the greatest and least eigenvalues of an associated Hermitian operator. Exactly solvable examples are described, and possible extensions are indicated.
We show that the Fano operator for one dimensional quantum system is uniquely determined by assuming the reasonable behavior under translation and parity transformation on phase space. Contrarily, for the system with lattice phase space the same procedure does not work.
We explicitly establish a unitary correspondence between spherical irreducible tensor operators and cartesian tensor operators of any rank. That unitary relation is implemented by means of a basis of integer-spin wave functions that constitute simultaneously a basis of the spaces of cartesian and spherical irreducible tensors. As a consequence, we extend the Wigner--Eckart theorem to cartesian irreducible tensor operators of any rank, and to totally symmetric reducible ones. We also discuss the tensorial structure of several standard spherical irreducible tensors such as ordinary, bipolar and …
Operators in quantum mechanics - either observables, density or evolution operators, unitary or not - can be represented by c-numbers in operator bases. The position and momentum bases are in one to one correspondence with lagrangian planes in double phase space, but this is also true for the well known Wigner-Weyl correspondence based on translation and reflection operators. These phase space methods are here extended to the representation of superoperators. We show that the Choi-Jamiolkowsky isomorphism between the dynamical matrix and the linear action of the superoperator constitutes a "do…
Using the Wigner distribution function, we analyze the behavior on phase space of generalized coherent states associated with the Morse potential (Morse-like coherent states). Within the f-deformed oscillator formalism, such states are constructed by means of the two following definitions: {\it i)} as deformed displacement operator coherent states (DOCSs) and {\it ii)} as deformed photon-added coherent states (DPACSs).
The Wigner function of a dynamical infinite dimensional lattice is studied. A closed differential equation without diffusion terms for this function is obtained and solved. We map atom-photon interaction systems, such as the Jaynes-Cummings model, into this lattice model, where each dressed or polariton state corresponds to a point in the lattice and the conjugate momenta are described by the eigenvalues of the phase operator. The corresponding Wigner function is defined by these two conjugate variables in what we name the polariton phase space. We derive a general propagator of the Wigner fun…
The Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism for quantum particle with discrete internal degrees of freedom is developed. A one to one correspondence between operators in the Hilbert space $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{3})\otimes{\mathcal{H}}^{(s+1)}$ and functions on the phase space $\mathbb{R}^{3}\times\mathbb{R}^{3}\times \{0,...,s\} \times\{0,...,s\}$ is found. The expressions for the Stratonovich-Weyl quantizer, star product and Wigner functions of such systems for arbitrary values of spin are obtained in detail. As examples the Landau levels and the corresponding Wigner functions for a spin $\frac{1}{2}$ nonrel…
We derive the steady state solution of the Fokker-Planck equation that describes the dynamics of the nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator in the truncated Wigner representation of the density operator. The adiabatic limit of strong pump damping is assumed. This phase space image provides a clear view of the intracavity two-mode entangled state valid in all operating regimes of the OPO. A nongaussian distribution is obtained for the above threshold solution.
Classical surfaces in phase space correspond to quantum states in Hilbert space. Subsystems specify factor spaces of the Hilbert space. An entangled state corresponds semiclassically to a surface that cannot be decomposed into a product of lower dimensional surfaces. Such a classical factorization never exists for ergodic eigenstates of a chaotic Hamiltonian. The space of quantum operators corresponds to a double phase space. The various representations of the density operator then result from alternative choices of allowed coordinate planes. In the case of the Wigner function and its Fourier …
We show that the linear symplectic and anti-symplectic transformations form the maximal covariance group for both the Wigner transform and Weyl operators. The proof is based on a new result from symplectic geometry which characterizes symplectic and anti-symplectic matrices, and which allows us, in addition, to refine a classical result on the preservation of symplectic capacities of ellipsoids.
Recently a paper on the construction of consistent Wigner functions for cylindrical phase spaces S^1 x R, i.e. for the canonical pair angle and angular momentum, was presented (arXiv:1601.02520), main properties of those functions derived, discussed and their usefulness illustrated by examples. The present paper is a continuation which compares properties of the new Wigner functions for cylindrical phase spaces with those of the well-known Wigner functions on planar ones in more detail. Furthermore, the mutual (Weyl) correspondence between Hilbert space operators and their phase space function…
