Universal quantum computation using optical coherent states is studied. A teleportation scheme for a coherent-state qubit is developed and applied to gate operations. This scheme is shown to be robust to detection inefficiency.
We show that quantum computation circuits with coherent states as the logical qubits can be constructed using very simple linear networks, conditional measurements and coherent superposition resource states.
We show that quantum computation circuits using coherent states as the logical qubits can be constructed from simple linear networks, conditional photon measurements and "small" coherent superposition resource states.
We use the Gazeau-Klauder formalism to construct coherent states of non-Hermitian quantum systems. In particular we use this formalism to construct coherent state of a PT symmetric system. We also discuss construction of coherent states following Klauder's minimal prescription.
Scalable and efficient quantum computation with photonic qubits requires (i) deterministic sources of single-photons, (ii) giant nonlinearities capable of entangling pairs of photons, and (iii) reliable single-photon detectors. In addition, an optical quantum computer would need a robust reversible photon storage devise. Here we discuss several related techniques, based on the coherent manipulation of atomic ensembles in the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency, that are capable of implementing all of the above prerequisites for deterministic optical quantum computation with sing…
Coherent states, known as displaced vacuum states, play an important role in quantum information processing, quantum machine learning, and quantum optics. In this article, two ways to digitally prepare coherent states in quantum circuits are introduced. First, we construct the displacement operator by decomposing it into Pauli matrices via ladder operators, i.e., creation and annihilation operators. The high fidelity of the digitally generated coherent states is verified compared with the Poissonian distribution in Fock space. Secondly, by using Variational Quantum Algorithms, we choose differe…
We consider the problem of bi-directional controlled quantum teleportation of information encoded in phase opposite coherent state among two distant partners Alice and Bob, with the consent of controller, Charlie. We use five-mode cluster-type entangled coherent state as the quantum resource to achieve this task. The scheme uses linear optical devices such as beam splitter, phase shifters, and photon counters. We have shown that for moderately large coherent amplitude, near-perfect bi-directional controlled teleportation can be obtained in terms of the average fidelity of teleportation.
We explore the sensitivity of an interferometer based on a quantum circuit for coherent states. We show that its sensitivity is at the Heisenberg limit. Moreover we show that this arrangement can measure very small length intervals.
We propose a way to retrieve the secure key generated by the coherent one way protocol without reading the information transmitted on the quantum channel.
We propose to realize a passive optical quantum swapping device which allows for the exchange of the quantum fluctuations of two bright optical fields interacting with a coherent atomic medium in an optical cavity. The device is based on a quantum interference process between the fields within the cavity bandwidth arising from coherent population trapping in the atomic medium.
In this work, we propose a quantum bit string commitment protocol using polarization of mesoscopic coherent states. The protocol is described and its security against brute force and quantum cloning machine attack is analyzed.
We review Wehrl's definition of a semiclassical entropy in terms of coherent states and give an introductory overview of Lieb's conjecture, its proof (including earlier results), generalizations, and the role of covariant quantum channels in this context. These structures motivate an alternative definition of coherent states and have interesting physical applications and implications.
We propose a methodology to emulate quantum phenomena arising from any non-classical quantum state using only a finite set of mixtures of coherent states. This allows us to successfully reproduce well-known quantum effects using resources that can be much more feasibly generated in the laboratory. We present a simple procedure to experimentally carry out quantum-state emulation with coherent states, illustrate it emulating multi-photon NOON states with few phase-averaged coherent states, and demonstrate its capabilities in observing fundamental quantum-mechanical effects, such as the Hong-Ou-M…
Quantum dynamics of integrable systems is discussed. Localized wave packets generalizing the conventional coherent states of minimal uncertainty are constructed. The wave packet moves along a certain trajectory and does not change its shape for times of order $\frac{1}{\hbar}$.
An entangled two-mode coherent state is studied within the framework of $2\times 2$ dimensional Hilbert space. An entanglement concentration scheme based on joint Bell-state measurements is worked out. When the entangled coherent state is embedded in vacuum environment, its entanglement is degraded but not totally lost. It is found that the larger the initial coherent amplitude, the faster entanglement decreases. We investigate a scheme to teleport a coherent superposition state while considering a mixed quantum channel. We find that the decohered entangled coherent state may be useless for qu…
A setup for discriminating between arbitrary two coherent states of a single light mode with the highest success rate allowed by quantum mechanics is presented. Its application to time-multiplexed quantum key distribution is discussed.
We present a scheme for implementing homomorphic encryption on coherent states encoded using phase-shift keys. The encryption operations require only rotations in phase space, which commute with computations in the codespace performed via passive linear optics, and with generalized non-linear phase operations that are polynomials of the photon-number operator in the codespace. This encoding scheme can thus be applied to any computation with coherent state inputs, and the computation proceeds via a combination of passive linear optics and generalized non-linear phase operations. An example of s…
Quantum versions of control problems are often more difficult than their classical counterparts because of the additional constraints imposed by quantum dynamics. For example, the quantum LQG and quantum H infinity optimal control problems remain open. To make further progress, new, systematic and tractable methods need to be developed. This paper gives three algorithms for designing coherent observers, i.e., quantum systems that are connected to a quantum plant and their outputs provide information about the internal state of the plant. Importantly, coherent observers avoid measurements of th…
The coherent bit (cobit) channel is a resource intermediate between classical and quantum communication. It produces coherent versions of teleportation and superdense coding. We extend the cobit channel to continuous variables by providing a definition of the coherent nat (conat) channel. We construct several coherent protocols that use both a position-quadrature and a momentum-quadrature conat channel with finite squeezing. Finally, we show that the quality of squeezing diminishes through successive compositions of coherent teleportation and superdense coding.
We give the explicit expressions of the pairwise quantum correlations present in superpositions of multipartite coherent states. A special attention is devoted to the evaluation of the geometric quantum discord. The dynamics of quantum correlations under a dephasing channel is analyzed. A comparison of geometric measure of quantum discord with that of concurrence shows that quantum discord in multipartite coherent states is more resilient to dissipative environments than is quantum entanglement. To illustrate our results, we consider some special superpositions of Weyl-Heisenberg, SU(2) and SU…
Quantum nonlocality is tested for an entangled coherent state, interacting with a dissipative environment. A pure entangled coherent state violates Bell's inequality regardless of its coherent amplitude. The higher the initial nonlocality, the more rapidly quantum nonlocality is lost. The entangled coherent state can also be investigated in the framework of $2\times2$ Hilbert space. The quantum nonlocality persists longer in $2\times2$ Hilbert space. When it decoheres it is found that the entangled coherent state fails the nonlocality test, which contrasts with the fact that the decohered enta…
Interaction with a thermal environment decoheres the quantum state of a mechanical oscillator. When the interaction is sufficiently strong, such that more than one thermal phonon is introduced within a period of oscillation, quantum coherent oscillations are prevented. This is generally thought to preclude a wide range of quantum protocols. Here, we introduce a pulsed optomechanical protocol that allows ground state cooling, general linear quantum non-demolition measurements, optomechanical state swaps, and quantum state preparation and tomography without requiring quantum coherent oscillation…
We use the probability of error as a measure of distinguishability between two pure and two mixed symmetric coherent states in the context of continuous variable quantum cryptography. We show that the two mixed symmetric coherent states (in which the various components have the same real part) never give an eavesdropper more information than two pure coherent states.
We investigate the influence of photon excitations on quantum correlations in tripartite Glauber coherent states of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger type. The pairwise correlations are measured by means of the entropy-based quantum discord. We also analyze the monogamy property of quantum discord in this class of tripartite states in terms of the strength of Glauber coherent states and the photon excitation order.
We investigate the generation of multipartite entangled SU(k+1) coherent states using a quantum network involving a sequence of k beam splitters. We particularly investigate the entanglement in multipartite SU(2) coherent states (k = 1). We employ the concurrence as measure of the degree of bipartite entanglement.
The introduction of phase coherence in the detection of quantum noise of light yields a pure quantum measurement of spectral modes. We theoretically show that such coherent quantum measurement performed with the technique of resonator detection (RD) is able to access any direction in the two-mode phase space of spectral sidebands under appropriate conditions, thus furnishing a complete measurement of the four-dimensional Wigner function. We obtain a realistic measurement operator for coherent RD by including the effects of imperfect resonator mode matching in our analysis. Moreover, we experim…
We propose a simple scheme for the quantum teleportation of both bipartite and multipartite entangled coherent states with the successful probability 1/2. The scheme is based on only linear optical devices such as beam splitters and phase shifters, and two-mode photon number measurements. The quantum channels described by multipartite maximally entangled coherent states are readily made by the beam splitters and phase shifters.
This work discuss the entanglement and quantum polarization of superpositions of two-mode coherent states. We use the concurrence to measure their entanglements and the quantum Stokes parameters and the Q function in order to analyze their polarization and degree of polarization.
We give an explicit construction for a quantum observer coherently mimicking the dynamics of a cavity mode system and without any disturbance of the system's dynamics. This gives the exact analogue of the Luenberger observer used in controller design in engineering
Developments in the foundations of quantum mechanics have identified several attributes and tests associated with the "quantumness" of systems, including entanglement, nonlocality, quantum erasure, Bell test, etc. Here we introduce and utilize these tools to examine the role of quantum coherence and nonclassical effects in 1 vs. N photon coherent phase control, a paradigm for an all-optical method for manipulating molecular dynamics. In addition, truly quantum control scenarios are introduced and examined. The approach adopted here serves as a template for studies of the role of quantum mechan…
A new family of 2-component vector-valued coherent states for the quantum particle motion in an infinite square well potential is presented. They allow a consistent quantization of the classical phase space and observables for a particle in this potential. We then study the resulting position and (well-defined) momentum operators. We also consider their mean values in coherent states and their quantum dispersions.
It is well known that the maximal success probability of the binary quantum communication can be improved by using a sub-Poissonian non-standard coherent state as an information carrier. In the present article, we consider the quantum communication with $N$-ary phase shift keying ($N$-PSK) signal for an arbitrary positive integer $N>1$. By using non-standard coherent state, we analytically provide the maximal success probability of the quantum communication with $N$-PSK. Unlike the binary case, we show that even super-Poissonianity of non-standard coherent state can improve the maximal success…
The quantum Rabi oscillations in a coherently driven quantum dot embedded in a high-Q doubly resonant semiconductor micro-cavity in the presence of a strong second-order nonlinear medium is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the second order nonlinearity effect the Rabi oscillations in a significant manner.
Quantum entanglement generation is generally known to be impossible by any classical means. According to Poisson statistics, coherent photons are not considered quantum particles due to the bunching phenomenon. Recently, a coherence approach has been applied to interpret quantum features such as the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, Franson-type nonlocal correlation, and delayed-choice quantum eraser, where the quantum feature is due to basis-product superposition at the cost of 50 % photon loss. For this, it has been understood that a fixed sum-phase relation between paired photons is the bedrock …
We propose a new theory on a relation between diffusive and coherent nature in one dimensional wave mechanics based on a quantum walk. It is known that the quantum walk in homogeneous matrices provides the coherent property of wave mechanics. Using the recent result of a localization phenomenon in a one-dimensional quantum walk (Konno, Quantum Inf. Proc. (2010) 9, 405-418), we numerically show that the randomized localized matrices suppress the coherence and give diffusive nature.
Using coherent states in optical quantum process tomography is a practically-relevant approach. Here, we develop a framework for complete characterization of quantum-optical processes in terms of normally-ordered moments by using coherent states as probes. We derive the associated superoperator tensors for several optical processes. We also show that our technique can be used to determine nonclassicality features of quantum-optical states and processes. Furthermore, we investigate identification of multi-mode Gaussian processes and show that the number of necessary probe coherent states scales…
Polarization coherent states (PCS) are considered as generalized coherent states of $SU(2)_p$ group of the polarization invariance of the light fields. The geometric phases of PCS are introduced in a way, analogous to that used in the classical polarization optics.
Quantum coherence represented by a superposition of energy eigenstates is, together with energy, an important resource for quantum technology and thermodynamics. Energy and quantum coherence however, can be complementary. The increase of energy can reduce quantum coherence and vice versa. Recently, it was realized that steady-state quantum coherence could be autonomously harnessed from a cold environment. We propose a conditional synthesis of $N$ independent two-level systems (TLS) with partial quantum coherence obtained from an environment to one coherent system using a measurement able to in…
In this paper, the generalized coherent state for quantum systems with degenerate spectra is introduced. Then, the nonclassicality features and number-phase entropic uncertainty relation of two particular degenerate quantum systems are studied. Finally, using the Gazeau-Klauder coherent states approach, time evolution of some of the nonclassical properties of the coherent states corresponding to the considered physical systems are discussed.
In this paper, we show that correlated coherent states (CCSs) are the most adequate candidates for the role of quantum analogues of the thermal states. The main result of our study reduces to the fact that quantum thermal effects under conditions of the equilibrium of an object with the stochastic environment at any temperatures can be explained consistently only on the basis of the set of CCSs.
We present a general unified approach for finding the coherent states of polynomially deformed algebras such as the quadratic and Higgs algebras, which are relevant for various multiphoton processes in quantum optics. We give a general procedure to map these deformed algebras to appropriate Lie algebras. This is used, for the non compact cases, to obtain the annihilation operator coherent states, by finding the canonical conjugates of these operators. Generalized coherent states, in the Perelomov sense also follow from this construction. This allows us to explicitly construct coherent states a…
We consider the role of quantum mechanics in a specific coherent control scenario, designing a "coherent control interferometer" as the essential tool that links coherent control to quantum fundamentals. Building upon this allows us to rigorously display the genuinely quantum nature of a generalized weak-field coherent control scenario (utilizing 1 vs. 2 photon excitation) via a Bell-CHSH test. Specifically, we propose an implementation of "quantum delayed-choice" in a bichromatic alkali atom photoionization experiment. The experimenter can choose between two complementary situations, which ar…
p-Mechanics is a consistent physical theory which describes both quantum and classical mechanics simultaneously. We continue the development of p-mechanics by introducing the concept of states. The set of coherent states we introduce allow us to evaluate classical observables at any point of phase space simultaneously to evaluating quantum probability amplitudes. The example of the forced harmonic oscilator is used to demonstrate these concepts.
Coherent feedback control of quantum systems has demonstrable advantages over measurement-based control, but so far there has been little work done on coherent estimators and more specifically coherent observers. Coherent observers are input the coherent output of a specified quantum plant, and are designed such that some subset of the observer and plant's expectation values converge in the asymptotic limit. We previously developed a class of mean tracking (MT) observers for open harmonic oscillators that only converged in mean position and momentum; Here we develop a class of covariance matri…
In this letter we propose a scheme to build up high coherent solid-state quantum bit (qubit) from two coupled quantum dots. Quantum information is stored in electron-hole pair state with the electron and hole locating in different dots, and universal quantum gates involving any pair of qubits are realized by effective coupling interaction via virtually exchanging cavity photons.
In this paper, we investigate the long-standing gap of quantum key rate between the Weak Coherent Pulse (WCP) and Heralded Single Photon Sources(HSPS) implementation of quantum cryptographical protocol. We prove that, by utilizing the Heralded Pair Coherent State (HPCS) photon sources, such a gap can be actually filled in both BB84 and SARG quantum key distribution. Thus, a universal photon source which achieves the up-to-date optimal key rate for each transmission distance is obtained.
Coherent beam combining refers to the process of generating a bright output beam by merging independent input beams with locked relative phases. We report the first quantum mechanical noise limit calculations for coherent beam combining and compare our results to quantum-limited amplification. Our coherent beam combining scheme is based on an optical Fourier transformation which renders the scheme compatible with integrated optics. The scheme can be layed out for an arbitrary number of input beams and approaches the shot noise limit for a large number of inputs.
We demonstrate a device that allows for the coherent analysis of a pair of optical frequency sidebands in an arbitrary basis. We show that our device is quantum noise limited and hence applications for this scheme may be found in discrete and continuous variable optical quantum information experiments.
Non-equilibrium photon correlations of coherently excited single quantum systems can reveal their internal quantum dynamics and provide spectroscopic access. Here we propose and discuss the fundamentals of a coherent photon coincidence spectroscopy based on the application of laser pulses with variable delay and the detection of an time-averaged two-photon coincidence rate. For demonstration, two simple but important cases, i.e., an exciton - biexciton in a quantum dot and two coupled quantum emitters, are investigated based on quantum dynamics simulations demonstrating that this nonlinear spe…
The quantum discord is used as measure of quantum correlations for two families of multipartite coherent states. The first family interpolates between generalized GHZ states and generalized Werner states. The second one is an interpolation between generalized GHZ and the ground state of the multipartite quantum system. Two inequivalent ways to split the system in a pair of qubits are introduced. The explicit expressions of quantum quantum discord in multipartite coherent states are derived. Its evaluation uses the Koashi-Winter relation in optimizing the conditional entropy. The temporal evolu…
We find that a bipartite quantum state is entangled if and only if it is quantum coherent with respect to complete bases of states in the corresponding system that are distinguishable under local quantum operations and classical communication. The corresponding minimal quantum coherence is the entanglement of formation. Connections to the relative entropy of entanglement and quantum coherence, and generalizations to the multiparty case are also considered.
The most efficient modern optical communication is known as coherent communication and its standard quantum limit (SQL) is almost reachable with current technology. Though it has been predicted for a long time that this SQL could be overcome via quantum mechanically optimized receivers, such a performance has not been experimentally realized so far. Here we demonstrate the first unconditional evidence surpassing the SQL of coherent optical communication. We implement a quantum receiver with a simple linear optics configuration and achieve more than 90% of the total detection efficiency of the …
We propose novel coherent-state phase concentration by probabilistic measurement-induced ampli- fication. The amplification scheme uses novel architecture, thermal noise addition (instead of single photon addition) followed by feasible multiple photon subtraction using realistic photon-number resolving detector. It allows to substantially amplify weak coherent states and simultaneously reduce their phase uncertainty, contrary to the deterministic amplifier.
This Letter verifies the potential of several classes of entangled coherent state in well known quantum metrology which includes detection of classical external force, and shows that there is a class of entangled coherent state for the external force detection system without the quantum limit in the detection of the light. In the case of the precision measurement of continuos parameter like phase measurement, the entangled coherent state with perfect entanglement does not provide remarkable benefit, but we provide a concrete example that certain class of entangled coherent state gives a remark…
Weak coherent states as a photon source for quantum cryptography have limit in secure data rate and transmission distance because of the presence of multi-photon events and loss in transmission line. Two-photon events in a coherent state can be taken out by a two-photon interference scheme. We investigate the security issue of utilizing this modified coherent state in quantum cryptography. A 4 dB improvement in secure data rate or a nearly two-fold increase in transmission distance over the coherent state are found. With a recently proposed and improved encoding strategy, further improvement i…
We propose a quantum state transfer from an atomic qubit to a cat-like qubit by means of one degenerate Raman interaction and one Hadamard gate operation for coherent states. We show that the coefficients of the atomic qubit can be mapped onto coherent state qubit, with an effective qubit state transfer.
