The principle of operation, design, registration system and main characteristics of a fast neutrons spectrometer are described. The spectrometer is intended for direct measurements of ultra low fluxes of fast neutrons. It is sensitive to neutron fluxes of 10^-7 neutrons/(cm^2 s^1) and lower with the neutron energy above 700 keV. The detection efficiency of fast neutrons with simultaneous energy measurement is within 0.02-0.06. The neutron spectrometer was designed taking into account requirements for minimizing the gamma-ray background. It is a calorimeter based on a pure liquid organic scintillator-thermalizer with helium proportional counters as capturers of thermalized neutrons distributed uniformly over the volume. Low-level signal electronics for the spectrometer were designed with signal-to-noise ratio optimization and full pulse shape analysis required for efficient rejection of background events. A data acquisition and processing system is based on fast (100 MHz) two-channel PC/AT interfaced digital oscilloscope. The acquisition software was written in the C programming language.
There is a proposal to search for a sterile neutrino in a few keV mass range by the "Troitsk nu-mass" facility. In order to estimate sterile neutrino mixing one needs to make precision spectrum measurements well below the endpoint using the existing electrostatic spectrometer with a magnetic adiabatic collimation, or MAC-E filter. The expected signature will be a kink in the electron energy spectrum in tritium beta-decay. In this article we consider the systematic effect of electron backscattering on the detector used in the spectrometer. For this purpose we provide a set of Monte-Carlo simula…
MIDAS is a miniature detector developed with purpose to assess the radiation field parameters near to an astronaut. Part of the device is a spectrometer for fast neutrons. In missions outside the geomagnetic field, fast neutrons are secondary products of the interaction of Galactic Cosmic Ray heavy ions with the materials in the spaceship or even the astronaut body. The Relative Biological Effectiveness of fast neutrons is high. The neutron spectrometer first prototype has been developed, calibrated and used for measuring 252Cf spectra.
A Neutron Time-Of-Flight (NTOF) spectrometer based on Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) is developed for studies of neutron production of proton induced spallation reactions related to the ADS project. After the presentation of comparisons between calculated spallation neutron production double-differential cross sections and the available experimental one, a detailed description of NTOF spectrometer is given. Test beam results show that the spectrometer works well and data analysis procedures are established. The comparisons of the test beam neutron spectra with those of GEANT4 s…
In this paper we describe the development and first tests of a neutron spectrometer designed for high flux environments, such as the ones found in fast nuclear reactors. The spectrometer is based on the conversion of neutrons impinging on $^6$Li into $α$ and $t$ whose total energy comprises the initial neutron energy and the reaction $Q$-value. The $^6$LiF layer is sandwiched between two CVD diamond detectors, which measure the two reaction products in coincidence. The spectrometer was calibrated at two neutron energies in well known thermal and 3 MeV neutron fluxes. The measured neutron detec…
A fast neutron spectrometer consisting of segmented plastic scintillator and He-3 proportional counters was constructed for the measurement of neutrons in the energy range 1 MeV to 200 MeV. We discuss its design, principles of operation, and the method of analysis. The detector is capable of observing very low neutron fluxes in the presence of ambient gamma background and does not require scintillator pulseshape discrimination. The spectrometer was characterized for its energy response in fast neutron fields of 2.5 MeV and 14 MeV, and the results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations. Meas…
In the frame of direct dark matter search, the fast neutrons producing elastic collisions are the ultimate background. The MIMAC (MIcro-tpc MAtrix Chambers) project has developed a directional detector providing the directional signature to discriminate them based on 3D nuclear tracks reconstruction. The MIMAC team of the LPSC has adapted one MIMAC chamber as a portable fast neutron spectrometer, the Mimac-FastN detector, having a very large neutron energy range (10 keV - 600 MeV) with different gas mixtures and pressures. The present paper shows its main features and functionality and demonst…
The thermal neutrons were registered using a two-detector module based on two planar Si detectors: with a neutron converter from natural metallic Gd and without a converter. To obtain thermal neutrons we used a 239Pu-Be(α,n) fast neutron source with a paraffin moderator. The measurements were carried out simultaneously by two detectors by processing two channels of registration with a special computer program. In experiments gamma radiation was not suppressed. The conversion electrons of the nuclear reaction Gd(n,γe)Gd were registered. We performed the registration of thermal neutrons with the…
The article presents results on neutron electric dipole moment measurements (EDM), made by ILL reactor using PNPI experimental installation. Double chamber magnetic resonance spectrometer with prolonged holding of ultra cold neutrons has been employed. The obtained results at 90% confidence level determine the upper limit for EDM neutron quantity equal to $|d_n| < 5.5 \cdot 10^{-26}$ e$ \cdot$cm.
In the present article we describe the calibration measurements of the compact neutron spectrometer at certified PTB neutron source. The spectrometer is based on two diamond detectors enclosing the Li-6 neutron converter. The incident neutron energy is measured through the sum of energies of the two conversion reaction products: t and alpha. The prototype used in this work was based on two 4x4 mm2, 100 um thick single crystal CVD commercial diamond plates. The measurements were performed in the fission spectrum domain at five different neutron energies varying from 0.3 up to 2 MeV. The obtaine…

In this paper a new version of Li6-based neutron spectrometer for high flux environments is described. The new spectrometer was built with commercial single crystal Chemical Vapour Deposition diamonds of electronic grade. These crystals feature better charge collection as well as higher radiation hardness. Ohmic metal contacts were deposited on the diamonds suppressing build-up of space charge observed in the previous prototypes. New passive preamplification of signal at detector side was implemented to improve the resolution. This preamplification is based on RF transformer not sensitive to h…
The neutron background spectrum from thermal neutron to 20 MeV fast neutron was measured at the first experimental hall of China Jinping underground laboratory with a Bonner multi-sphere spectrometer. The measurement system was validated by a Cf252 source and inconformity was corrected. Due to micro charge discharge, the dataset was screened and background from the steel of the detectors was estimated by MC simulation. Based on genetic algorithm we obtained the energy distribution of the neutron and the total flux of neutron was (2.69 +/-1.02) *10^-5 cm^-2s^-1
Neutron reflectometry is a method for measuring the spatial profile of the neutron interaction potential with the medium. The interaction potential is the sum of neutron interaction potentials with separate isotopes of the medium. To determine the neutron interaction potential with the structure units, secondary radiation is simultaneously registered with neutrons. Channels for registering secondary radiation of charged particles, gamma rays and neutrons, having experienced spin flip, have been developed on the REMUR spectrometer of the IBR-2 reactor in Dubna (Russia). The necessity of registe…
A self-adaptive differential evolution neutron spectrum unfolding algorithm (SDENUA) was established in this paper to unfold the neutron spectra obtained from a Water-pumping-injection Multi-layered concentric sphere Neutron Spectrometer (WMNS). Specifically, the neutron fluence bounds were estimated to accelerate the algorithm convergence, the minimum error between the optimal solution and the input neutron counts with relative uncertainties was limited to 10-6 to avoid useless calculation. Furthermore, the crossover probability and scaling factor were controlled self-adaptively. FLUKA Monte …
In this paper, the distribution of radiation field in the CSNS spectrometer hall was simulated by FLUKA program. The results showed that the radiation field of high energy proton accelerator is dominated by neutron radiation, and the range of neutron energy is quite widely, including about eleven orders of magnitude. Nextly, work of simulation and calculation of the response functions of four Bonner spheres with simplified model is done by FLUKA and MCNP codes respectively, and the acceptable difference proved the feasibility of FLUKA program in this application and the correctness of the rele…
Neutron and gamma-ray spectroscopy (NGRS) is a well established technique for studying the geochemical composition and volatile abundance relevant to planetary structure and evolution of planetary bodies. Previous NGRS instruments have used separate gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers. The Elpasolite Planetary Ice and Composition Spectrometer (EPICS) instrument is an innovative and fully integrated NGRS with low resource requirements. EPICS utilizes elpasolite scintillator read out by silicon photomultipliers to combine the gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer into a single instrument, leading t…

We present the development of a segmented fast neutron spectrometer (FaNS-2) based upon plastic scintillator and $^3$He proportional counters. It was designed to measure both the flux and spectrum of fast neutrons in the energy range of few MeV to 1 GeV. FaNS-2 utilizes capture-gated spectroscopy to identify neutron events and reject backgrounds. Neutrons deposit energy in the plastic scintillator before capturing on a $^3$He nucleus in the proportional counters. Segmentation improves neutron energy reconstruction while the large volume of scintillator increases sensitivity to low neutron flux…
We describe an experimental installation for a new test of the weak equivalence principle for neutron. The device is a sensitive gravitational spectrometer for ultra-cold neutrons allowing to precisely compare the gain in kinetic energy of free falling neutrons to quanta of energy ${\hbar}Ω$ transferred to the neutron via a non stationary device, i.e. a quantum modulator. The results of first test experiments indicate a collection rate allowing measurements of the factor of equivalence $ { γ}$ with a statistical uncertainty in the order of $5{\times}10^{-3}$ per day. A number of systematic eff…
A prototype of neutron spectrometer based on diamond detectors has been developed. This prototype consists of a $^6$Li neutron converter sandwiched between two CVD diamond crystals. The radiation hardness of the diamond crystals makes it suitable for applications in low power research reactors, while a low sensitivity to gamma rays and low leakage current of the detector permit to reach good energy resolution. A fast coincidence between two crystals is used to reject background. The detector was read out using two different electronic chains connected to it by a few meters of cable. The first …
The first eight years of operation of the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge is being reviewed. The instrument has been part of the facility user program since 2009, and more than 250 individual user experiments have been performed to date. CNCS is an extremely powerful and versatile instrument and offers leading edge performance in terms of beam intensity, energy resolution, and flexibility to trade one for another. Experiments are being routinely performed with the sample at extreme conditions: T~0.05K, p>=2GPa and B=8T can be achieved indi…
Many types of neutron spectrometer use a conventional primary spectrometer consisting of some collimator, a crystal monochromator and a second collimator. Conventional resolution descriptions use instrument parameter values to deduce the beam character and thence the instrument transmission and resolution. This article solves the inverse problem of choosing beam elements to deliver some desired beam character and shows that there are many possible choices of elements to deliver any given beam character. Dealing with this multiplicity seems to be a central issue in the search for optimal instru…
Large acceptance spectrometers at in-flight RI separators have played significant roles in investigating the structure of exotic nuclei. Such spectrometers are in particular useful for probing unbound states of exotic nuclei, using invariant mass spectroscopy with reactions at intermediate and high energies. We discuss here the key characteristic features of such spectrometers, by introducing the recently commissioned SAMURAI facility at the RIBF, RIKEN. We also explore the issue of cross talk in the detection of multiple neutrons, which has become crucial for exploring further unbound states …
Bonner Spheres have been used widely for the measurement of neutron spectra with neutron energies ranged from thermal up to at least 20 MeV. A Bonner Sphere neutron spectrometer (BSS) was developed by extending a Berthold LB 6411 neutron-dose-rate meter. The BSS consists of a $^{3}$He thermal-neutron detector with integrated electronics, a set of eight polyethylene spherical shells and two optional lead shells of various sizes. The response matrix of the BSS was calculated with GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation. The BSS had a calibration uncertainty of $\pm 8.6\%$ and a detector background rate of…
The exact resolution function in transfer vector for the reflectometer HERMÈS at Laboratoire Léon Brillouin is calculated as an example of neutron time-of-fligh spectrometer with double-disk chopper. Calculation accounts for wavelength distribution of the incident beam, tilt of the chopper axis, collimation and gravity, without approximation of gaussian distributions or independence of these different contributions. Numerical implementation is provided that matches the sections of the paper. We show that data fitting using this exact resolution function allows us to reach much better results t…
This paper described a measurement of accelerator neutron radiation field at a transport beam line of Beijing-TBF. The experiment place was be selected around a Faraday Cup with a graphite target impacted by electron beam at 2.5GeV. First of all, we simulated the neutron radiation experiment by FLUKA. Secondly, we chose six appropriate ERNMS according to their neutron fluence response function to measure the neutron count rate. Then the U_M_G package program was be utilized to unfolding experiment data. Finally, we drew a comparison between the unfolding with the simulation spectrum and made a…
The elastic energy resolution, integrated intensity, and peak intensity of the direct-geometry neutron chopper spectrometer 4SEASONS at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) were re-investigated. This was done with respect to the incident energy and the rotation speed of the Fermi chopper using incoherent scattering of vanadium and simple analytical formulas. The model calculations reproduced the observed values satisfactorily. The present work should be useful for estimating in instrument performance in experiments.
SIKA, a high-flux cold-neutron triple-axis spectrometer at the OPAL reactor at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization, is equipped with a 13-blade analyser and position-sensitive detector. This multiplexing design endows SIKA high flexibility to run in both traditional triple-axis and multiplexing analyser modes. In this study, two different multiplexing modes on SIKA are simulated using Monte-Carlo ray-tracing methods. The simulation results demonstrate SIKA capabilities to work in these operational modes, especially, the multi-Q const-Ef mode. This capability was demonstr…
The Multi-Grid detector technology has evolved from the proof-of-principle and characterisation stages. Here we report on the performance of the Multi-Grid detector, the MG.CNCS prototype, which has been installed and tested at the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer, CNCS at SNS. This has allowed a side-by-side comparison to the performance of $^3$He detectors on an operational instrument. The demonstrator has an active area of 0.2 m$^2$. It is specifically tailored to the specifications of CNCS. The detector was installed in June 2016 and has operated since then, collecting neutron scattering …
We present the outlines of a new microcontroller based data acquisition system which is aimed for reliable operation in a typical cosmic ray particle registration experiment. The system supports connection of up to 16 input signals and ensures the following operation functionality: (1)stable monitoring of the intensity of a digital pulse signal, or digitization of a continuous potential level with a low time resolution (typically, in the limits of 1-100s); (2)registration of a continuous high-resolution (up to 5-10us) time series of the intensity of input signal; (3)synchronization of register…
The use of Thin-foil proton recoil (TPR) spectrometers to measure neutrons from Deuterium-Tritium (DT) fusion plasma has been studied previously and is a well established technique for neutron spectrometry. The study presented here focuses on the optimisation of the TPR spectrometer configurations consisting of dE and E silicon detectors. In addition an investigation of the spectrometer's ability to determine fuel ion temperature and fuel ion density ratio in ITER like DT plasmas has been performed. A Python code was developed for the purpose of calculating detection efficiency and energy reso…
The instrumental layout and technical realisation of the neutron resonant spin echo (NRSE) spectrometer RESEDA at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany, is presented. RESEDA is based on a longitudinal field configuration, boosting both dynamic range and maximum resolution of the spectrometer compared to the conventional transverse layout. The resonant neutron spin echo technique enables the realisation of two complementary implementations: A longitudinal NRSE (LNRSE) option comparable to the classical neutron spin echo (NSE) method for highest energy resolution and large …
The RESEDA (Resonant Spin-Echo for Diverse Applications) instrument has been optimized for neutron scattering measurements of quasi-elastic and inelastic processes over a wide parameter range. One spectrometer arm of RESEDA is configured for the MIEZE (Modulation of Intensity with Zero Effort) technique, where the measured signal is an oscillation in neutron intensity over time prepared by two precisely tuned radio-frequency (RF) flippers. With MIEZE, all spin-manipulations are performed before the beam reaches the sample, and thus the signal from sample scattering is not disrupted by any depo…
A development in modern neutron spectroscopy is to avoid the need of large samples. We demonstrate how small samples together with the right choice of analyser and detector components makes distance collimation an important concept in crystal analyser spectrometers. We further show that this opens new possibilities where neutrons with different energies are reflected by the same analyser but counted in different detectors, thus improving both energy resolution and total count rate compared to conventional spectrometers. The technique can be combined with advanced focusing geometries and with m…

The upgrade enables one to perform light-pump muon-probe experiments under a high magnetic field, which opens new applications of muon spin spectroscopy. In this report we give an overview of the principle of the HiFi Laser system, and describe the newly developed techniques and devices that enable precisely controlled photoexcitation of samples in the muon instrument. A demonstration e…
General Fusion is building the Fusion Demonstration Plant to demonstrate a magnetized target fusion scheme in which a deuterium plasma is heated from 200 eV to 10 keV by piston-driven compression of a liquid-lithium liner. The multilayer coaxial time-of-flight (MCTOF) neutron emission spectrometer is designed to measure the ion temperature near peak compression at which time the neutron yield will approach $10^{18}$ neutrons/s. The neutron energy distribution is expected to be Gaussian since the machine uses no neutral beam or radiofrequency heating. In this case, analysis shows that as few as…
