The paper considers the process of Thomson scattering of coherent diffraction radiation (CDR) produced by the preceding bunch of the accelerator on one of the following bunches. It is shown that the yield of scattered hard photons is proportional to N$_e^3$, where N$_e$ is the number of electrons per bunch. A geometry is chosen for the CDR generation and an expression is obtained for the scattered photon spectrum with regard to the geometry used, that depends in an explicit form on the bunch size. A technique is proposed for measuring the bunch length using scattered radiation characteristics.
We present the design of a high repetition rate MeV energy ultrafast electron diffraction instrument based on a DC photoelectron gun and an SRF linac with multiple independently controlled accelerating and bunching cavities. The design is based on the existing Cornell photoinjector, which can readily be applied to the presented findings. Using particle tracking simulations in conjunction with multiobjective genetic algorithm optimization, we explore the smallest bunch lengths, emittance, and probe spot sizes achievable. We present results for both stroboscopic conditions (with single electrons…
Improving temporal resolution of ultrafast electron diffraction by eliminating arrival time jitter induced by radiofrequency bunch compression cavities
An elegant and convenient rigorous approach for solving circular open-ended dielectric-loaded waveguide diffraction problems is presented. It uses the solution of corresponding Wiener-Hopf-Fock equation and leads to an infinite linear system for reflection coefficients (S-parameters) of the waveguide, the latter can be efficiently solved numerically using the reducing technique. As a specific example directly applicable to beam-driven radiation sources based on dielectric-lined capillaries, diffraction of a slow TM symmetrical mode at the open end of a circular waveguide with uniform dielectri…
A rigorous approach for solving canonical circular open-ended dielectric-lined waveguide diffraction problems is presented. This is continuation of our recent paper [1] where a simpler case of uniform dielectric filling has been considered. Here we deal with the case of an open-ended circular waveguide with layered dielectric filling which is closer to potential applications. The presented method uses the solution of corresponding Wiener-Hopf-Fock equation and leads to an infinite linear system for reflection coefficients (S-parameters) of the waveguide, the latter can be efficiently solved nu…
Numerical calculations of a high brilliance synchrotron source and on issues with characterizing strong radiation damping effects in non-linear Thomson/Compton backscattering experiments
In this paper, we use an envelope equation-based approach to obtain analytical scaling laws for the shortest pulse length achievable using radiofrequency (RF) based bunch compression. The derived formulas elucidate the dependencies on the electron beam energy and beam charge and reveal how to obtain bunches containing 1 million electrons with single-digit fs pulse lengths; relativistic energies are strongly desirable. The effect of the non-linearities associated with the RF curvature and the beam propagation in a drift is shown to strongly limit the attainability of extreme compression ratios.…
For usual radiation the integral of the electric field strength over the time is zero. First time the possibility of unipolar radiation generation has been considered theoretically in the paper [EG.Bessonov. Preprint No 76 of the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Academy of Science of the USSR, Moscow, 1990]. According to this work the unipolar radiation is radiation for which the integral of the electric field strength over the time differs significantly from zero. Futher a number of theoretical articles have been devoted to this problem mainly in respect to a synchrotron radiation. However u…
Longitudinal charge profile measurements or bunch shape measurements is a challenge for temporally short non-relativistic bunches. The field profile has a larger longitudinal extent compared to the charge profile for such beams. This affects the ability of field sensing devices such as phase pick-ups or wall current monitors to measure charge distribution. Here we evaluate the feasibility for usage of coherent transition and diffraction radiation from non-relativistic beams for bunch shape measurements.
Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) is a technique in which short-pulse electron beams can probe the femtosecond-scale evolution of atomic structure in matter driven far from equilibrium. As an accelerator physics challenge, UED imposes stringent constraints on the brightness of the probe electron beam. The low normalized emittance employed in UED, often at the 10 nm scale and below, is particularly sensitive to both applied field aberrations and space charge effects. The role of aberrations is increasingly important in small probe systems that often feature multiple orders of magnitude varia…
We compute a spectrum of parametric X-ray radiation (PXR) inside a crystal from a bunch of electrons, which is periodically modulated in density. We consider that the bunch of electrons is exiting from a XFEL channel. We demonstrate that in the case of a resonance between the frequency of parametric X-ray radiation and a frequency of modulation of an electron bunch the sequence of strong quasi-monochromatic X-ray pulses is formed -- superradiant parametric X-ray emission (SPXE) with frequencies multiples of the modulation frequency. The number of photons in the impulse of SPXE in the case of a…
We propose a physical design of a compact all optical terahertz (THz)-driven electron source. The 300 mm accelerator beamline, powered by Joule level laser system, is easily to be integrated to tabletop scale. A dual-feed THz-driven electron gun with an exponential impedance, a tapered dielectric loaded cylindrical waveguide, THz-driven bunch compressors and permanent magnet solenoids (PMS) have been designed and optimized. Dynamics simulations show that the electron source can deliver a 19 fC, 3 MeV electron beams with a normalized transverse emittance of 0.079 π.mm.mrad. A minimum relative e…
