We present the first demonstration of THz-driven bunch compression and timing stabilization of a few-fC relativistic electron beam with kinetic energy of 2.5 MeV using quasi-single-cycle strong field THz radiation in a shorted parallel-plate structure. Compression by nearly a factor of 3 produced a 39 fs rms bunch length and a reduction in timing jitter by more than a factor of 2, to 31 fs rms, offering a significant improvement to beam performance for applications like ultrafast electron diffraction. This THz-driven technique provides a critical step towards unprecedented timing resolution in ultrafast sciences and other accelerator applications using femtosecond-scale electron beams.
In this note an electron bunch compressor is proposed based on FEL type interaction of the electron bunch with far infrared (FIR) radiation. This mechanism maintains phase space density and thus requires a high quality electron beam to produce bunches of the length of a few ten micrometer.
Many front-end applications of electron linear accelerators rely on the production of temporally-compressed bunches. The shortening of electron bunches is often realized with magnetic bunch compressors located in high-energy sections of accelerators. Magnetic compression is subject to collective effects including space charge and self interaction via coherent synchrotron radiation. In this paper we explore the application of magnetic compression to low-energy ($\sim 40$ MeV), high-charge (nC) electron bunches with low normalized transverse emittances ($< 5$ $μ$m).
We report our comparison study on the first stage electron bunch compression schemes at 750 MeV using a conventional and a double C-chicane for the X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) under development for the Matter-Radiation Interactions in Extremes (MaRIE) project at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Compared to the performance of the conventional C-chicane bunch compressor, the double C-chicane scheme exhibits the capability of utilizing the transverse momentum shift induced by the coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the second C-chicane to compensate that generated in the first C-chicane, …
Electron bunch compressors formed of achromat arcs have a natural advantage over the more commonly used chicane compressors in that linearisation of the longitudinal phase space is of the correct sign to compensate for the curvature imprinted by rf acceleration. Here we extend the utility of arc compressors to enable variation of the longitudinal compaction within a fixed footprint. We also show that this variability can be achieved independently order-by-order in momentum deviation. The technique we employ consists of additional dipoles, leading to the advantageous property that variability c…
Pulse-to-pulse orbit jitter, if not controlled, can drastically degrade the luminosity in future linear colliders. The second goal of the ATF2 project at the KEK accelerator test facility is to stabilise the vertical beam position down to approximately 5% of the nominal rms vertical beam size at the virtual Interaction Point (IP). This will require control of the orbit to better than 1 micrometre at the entrance of the ATF2 final focus system. In this report simulation studies are presented for vertical jitter propagation through the ATF2 extraction line and final focus system, and the jitter …
A magnetic bunch compressor has been designed and is being commissioned for the APS linac to provide higher peak current for the LEUTL FEL. Of primary concern is control of emittance growth due to coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR). In addition, tolerances must be carefully evaluated in order to choose the most stable operating conditions and ensure that the system can meet operational goals. The computer code ELEGANT was used to design the bunch compressor, set tolerances, and simulate likely performance. This 6-D code includes a fast, simple simulation of CSR effects as well as longitudina…
The current article deals with analytical bunch compression studies for FLUTE whose results are compared to simulations. FLUTE is a linac-based electron accelerator with a design energy of approximately 40 MeV currently being constructed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. One of the goals of FLUTE is to generate electron bunches with their length lying in the femtosecond regime. In the first phase this will be accomplished using a magnetic bunch compressor. This compressor forms the subject of the studies presented. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part deals with pure g…
The LEUTL FEL at the APS has achieved gain at 530 nm with peak beam current \~100 A. In an effort to push to 120 nm and beyond, we have designed and are commissioning a bunch compressor to increase the peak current to 600 A or more. The bunch compressor uses a four-dipole chicane at an energy of 100 to 210 MeV. To provide options for control of emittance growth due to coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR), the chicane has variable R56. The central pair of dipoles is movable, accommodating variable R56 with less concern about emittance dilution from nonuniformity of the dipole field. The symmetr…
High brightness linear accelerators typically produce electron beams with peaks in the head and/or tail of the current profile. These current horns are formed after bunch compression due to non-linear correlations in the longitudinal phase space and the higher order optics of the compressor. It has been suggested that this higher order compression can be corrected by inserting an octupole magnet near the center of a bunch compressor. However, this scheme provides a correlated transverse kick leading to growth of the projected emittance. We present here a method whereby octupole magnets are ins…
The parameters for a 30 GeV test beam are outlined for use with an undulator in the FFTB tunnel where the LCLS will eventually be housed. It is proposed to use the SLAC linac and damping rings in their present mode of operation for PEP II injection, where 30 GeV beams are also delivered at 10 Hz to the FFTB. High peak currents are obtained with the addition of a second bunch compressor in the linac. In order to minimize the synchrotron radiation induced emittance growth in the bunch compressor it is necessary to locate the new bunch compressor at the low-energy end of the linac, just after the…
The temporal resolution of sub-relativistic ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) is generally limited by radio frequency (RF) phase and amplitude jitter of the RF lenses that are used to compress the electron pulses. We theoretically show how to circumvent this limitation by using a combination of several RF compression cavities. We show that if powered by the same RF source and with a proper choice of RF field strengths, RF phases and distances between the cavities, the combined arrival time jitter due to RF phase jitter of the cavities is cancelled at the compression point. We also show that…
At SwissFEL, a fully non-invasive characterization of the beam energy distribution can be performed by means of a Synchrotron-Radiation-Monitor (SRM) imaging in the visible the transverse profile of the electron beam in a magnetic chicane. Under conditions of off-crest acceleration in the SwissFEL injector, according to a first order Taylor series expansion, the distribution of the relative energy of the electron beam can be linearly expressed as a function of the distribution of the electron longitudinal coordinates via the coefficient of the rf induced beam energy chirp. It is hence possible…
RF pulse compressor is a device to convert a long RF pulse to a short one with much higher peak RF magnitude. SLED can be regarded as the earliest RF pulse compressor used in large scale linear accelerators. It is widely studied around the world and applied in the BEPC and BEPCII linac for many years. During the routine operation, the error and jitter effects will deteriorate the SLED performance either on the output electromagnetic wave amplitude or phase. The error effects mainly include the frequency drift induced by cooling water temperature variation and the frequency/Q0/β unbalances betw…
We present measurement and analyses of longitudinal timing jitter of Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII) linear accelerator electron gun. We simulated longitudinal jitter effect of the gun using PARMELA about beam performance including beam profile, average energy, energy spread, longitudinal phase of reference particle and XY emittance. The maximum percentage difference of the beam parameters are calculated to be; 100%, 13.27%, 42.24%, 7.79% and 65.01%, 86.81%, respectively due to which the bunching efficiency is reduced to 54%. The simulation results are in agreement with test and ar…
We propose and demonstrate a novel method to reduce the pulse width and timing jitter of a relativistic electron beam through THz-driven beam compression. In this method the longitudinal phase space of a relativistic electron beam is manipulated by a linearly polarized THz pulse in a dielectric tube such that the bunch tail has a higher velocity than the bunch head, which allows simultaneous reduction of both pulse width and timing jitter after passing through a drift. In this experiment, the beam is compressed by more than a factor of four from 130 fs to 28 fs with the arrival time jitter als…
We present an experimental evidence of a bunch compression scheme that uses a traveling wave accelerating structure as a compressor. The bunch length issued from a laser-driven radio-frequency electron source was compressed by a factor >3 using an S-band traveling wave structure located immediately downstream from the electron source. Experimental data are found to be in good agreement with particle tracking simulations.
In Free Electron Lasers (FEL), a transverse centroid misalignment of longitudinal slices in an electron bunch reduces the effective overlap between radiation field and electron bunch and therefore the FEL performance. The dominant sources of slice misalignments for FELs are the incoherent and coherent synchrotron radiation within bunch compressors as well as transverse wake fields in the accelerating cavities. This is of particular importance for over-compression which is required for one of the key operation modes for the SwissFEL planned at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The centroid shift is …
FAST is a facility at Fermilab that consists of a photoinjector, two superconducting capture cavities, one superconducting ILC-style cryomodule, and a small ring for studying non-linear, integrable beam optics called IOTA. This paper discusses the layout for the optical transport system that provides optical radiation to an externally located streak camera for bunch length measurements, and THz radiation to a Martin-Puplett interferometer, also for bunch length measurements. It accepts radiation from two synchrotron radiation ports in a chicane bunch compressor and a diffraction/transition rad…
We propose an alternative scheme for a tunable THz radiation source generated by relativistic electron bunches. This technique relies on the combination of dispersive selection and flat electron bunch. The dispersive selection uses a slit mask inside a bunch compressor to transform the energy-chirped electron beam into a bunch train. The flat beam transformation boosts the frequency range of the THz source by reducing the beam emittance in one plane. This technique generates narrow-band THz radiation with a tuning range between 0.2 - 4 THz. Single frequency THz spectrum can also be generated b…
A double kicker system which extracts the ultra-low emittance multi-bunch beam stably from ATF damping ring was developed. The performance of the system was studied comparing an orbit jitter with single kicker extraction in single bunch mode. The position jitter reduction was estimated from the analysis of the extraction orbits. The reduction was confirmed for the double kicker system within a resolution of BPMs. More precise tuning of the system with a wire scanner has been tried by changing a beta function at the second kicker to get more reduction of kick angle jitter. The results of these …
We present the analytical and simulated results concerning the influences of the acceleration gradient in the velocity bunching process, which is a bunch compression scheme that uses a traveling wave accelerating structure as a compressor. Our study shows that the bunch compression application with low acceleration gradient is more tolerant to phase jitter and more successful to obtain compressed electron beam with symmetrical longitudinal distribution and low energy spread. We also present a transverse emittance compensation scheme to compensate the emittance growth caused by the increasing o…
A high-precision intra-bunch-train beam orbit feedback correction system has been developed and tested in the ATF2 beamline of the Accelerator Test Facility at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Japan. The system uses the vertical position of the bunch measured at two beam position monitors (BPMs) to calculate a pair of kicks which are applied to the next bunch using two upstream kickers, thereby correcting both the vertical position and trajectory angle. Using trains of two electron bunches separated in time by 187.6~ns, the system was optimised so as to stabilize the beam o…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to generate tunable multi-color attosecond coherent X-ray radiation for future light source applications. This scheme uses an energy chirped electron beam, a laser modulators, a laser chirper and two bunch compressors to generate a multi-spike prebunched kilo-Ampere current electron beam from a few tens Ampere electron beam out of a linac. Such an electron beam transports through a series of undulator radiators and bunch compressors to generate multi-color coherent X-ray radiation. As an illustration, we present an example to generate two attosecond pulses wi…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to generate tunable coherent X-ray radiation for future light source applications. This scheme uses an energy chirped electron beam, a laser modulator, a laser chirper and two bunch compressors to generate a prebunched kilo-Ampere current electron beam from a few tens Ampere electron beam out of a linac. The initial modulation energy wavelength can be compressed by a factor of $1+h_b R_{56}^a$ in phase space, where $h_b$ is the energy bunch length chirp introduced by the laser chirper, $R_{56}^a$ is the momentum compaction factor of the first bunch compressor…
We demonstrate compression of 95 keV, space-charge-dominated electron bunches to sub-100 fs durations. These bunches have sufficient charge (200 fC) and are of sufficient quality to capture a diffraction pattern with a single shot, which we demonstrate by a diffraction experiment on a polycrystalline gold foil. Compression is realized by means of velocity bunching as a result of a velocity chirp, induced by the oscillatory longitudinal electric field of a 3 GHz radio-frequency cavity. The arrival time jitter is measured to be 80 fs.
The A0 Photoinjector at Fermilab can produce high charge (10-14 nC) electron bunches of low emittance (20 pi mm-mrad for 12 nC). We have undertaken a study of the optimal compression conditions. Off-crest acceleration in the 9-cell capture cavity induces an energy-time correlation, which is rotated by the compressor chicane (4 dipoles). The bunch length is measured using streak camera images of optical transition radiation. We present measurements under various conditions, including the effect of the laser pulse length (2 ps sigma Gaussian vs. 10 ps FWHM flat top). The best compression to date…

We propose and demonstrate a novel method to produce few-femtosecond electron beam with relatively low timing jitter. In this method a relativistic electron beam is compressed from about 150 fs (rms) to about 7 fs (rms, upper limit) with the wakefield at THz frequency produced by a leading drive beam in a dielectric tube. By imprinting the energy chirp in a passive way, we demonstrate through laser-driven THz streaking technique that no additional timing jitter with respect to an external laser is introduced in this bunch compression process, a prominent advantage over the conventional method …
We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme to produce ultrashort and ultrastable MeV electron beam. In this scheme, the electron beam produced in a photocathode radio-frequency (rf) gun first expands under its own Coulomb force with which a positive energy chirp is imprinted in the beam longitudinal phase space. The beam is then sent through a double bend achromat with positive longitudinal dispersion where electrons at the bunch tail with lower energies follow shorter paths and thus catch up with the bunch head, leading to longitudinal bunch compression. We show that with optimized parameter s…
Commissioning at the SCRF accelerator at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) Facility has included the implementation of a versatile bunch-length monitor located after the 4-dipole chicane bunch compressor for electron beam energies of 20-50 MeV and integrated charges in excess of 10 nC. The team has initially used a Hamamatsu C5680 synchroscan streak camera to assess the effects of space charge on the electron beam bunch lengths. An Al-coated Si screen was used to generate optical transition radiation (OTR) resulting from the beam's interaction with the screen. The chicane …
Through an interaction of theory and optimization-guided design, we have developed a novel bunch compression scheme based on an asymmetric double emittance exchange (DEEX) with greatly reduced coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effects. First, we discuss the benefits of the phase space exchange-based bunch compressor (BC) in comparison to the chicane-based counterpart in the approximation of linear single particle dynamics and with respect to microbunching instabilities driven by longitudinal space charge forces. We present simulation results for nonlinear dynamics in a symmetric DEEX BC whi…
Interaction between the bunches in the NLC main linac via long range wakefields can cause a beam breakup instability. Although the magnitude of the long range wakefields for an ideal NLC structure is below the instability threshold, the wake increases when structure manufacturing errors are taken into account. In case of large errors, the developing instability can result in the projected emittance dilution of the bunch train. To suppress the instability, we propose to introduce an energy spread between the bunches, similar to the BNS energy spread for damping of the beam breakup within a sing…
In this paper we propose a new method for measurements of the longitudinal profile of 100 femtosecond electron bunches for X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). The method is simply the combination of two well-known techniques, which where not previously combined to our knowledge. We use seed 10-ps 1047 nm quantum laser to produce exact optical replica of ultrafast electron bunches. The replica is generated in apparatus which consists of an input undulator (energy modulator), and the short output undulator (radiator) separated by a dispersion section. The radiation in the output undulator is exc…
Collimator wakefields in the Beam Delivery System (BDS) of future linear colliders, such as the International Linear Collider (ILC) and the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), can be an important source of emittance growth and beam jitter amplification, consequently degrading the luminosity. Therefore, a better understanding of collimator wakefield effects is essential to optimise the collimation systems of future linear colliders in order to minimise wakefield effects. In the past, measurements of single-bunch collimator wakefields have been carried out at SLAC with the aim of benchmarking theory…

We demonstrate the electromagnetic performance of waveguides for femtosecond electron beam bunch manipulation and compression with strong-field terahertz (THz) pulses. The compressor structure is a dispersion-free exponentially-tapered parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) that can focus single-cycle THz pulses along one dimension. We show test results of the tapered PPWG structure using electro-optic sampling (EOS) at the interaction region with peak fields of at least 300 kV/cm given 0.9 uJ of incoming THz energy. We also present a modified shorted design of the tapered PPWG for better beam manipu…
Coulomb interaction between charged particles is a well-known phenomenon in many areas of researches. In general the Coulomb repulsion force broadens the pulse width of an electron bunch and limits the temporal resolution of many scientific facilities such as ultrafast electron diffraction and x-ray free-electron lasers. Here we demonstrate a scheme that actually makes use of Coulomb force to compress a relativistic electron beam. Furthermore, we show that the Coulomb-driven bunch compression process does not introduce additional timing jitter, which is in sharp contrast to the conventional ra…
We describe an IFEL interaction driven by a guided broadband THz source to compress a relativistic electron bunch and synchronize it with an external laser pulse. A high field near single-cycle THz pulse, generated via optical rectification from the external laser source, is group velocity-matched to the electron bunch inside a waveguide, allowing for a sustained interaction in a magnetic undulator. We present measurements of the THz waveform before and after a curved parallel plate waveguide with varying aperture size and estimate the reduced group velocity. For a proof-of-concept experiment …
This paper describes a scheme for pump-probe experiments that can be performed at LCLS and at the European XFEL and determines what additional hardware development will be required to bring these experiments to fruition. It is proposed to derive both pump and probe pulses from the same electron bunch, but from different parts of the tunable-gap baseline undulator. This eliminates the need for synchronization and cancels jitter problems. The method has the further advantage to make a wide frequency range accessible at high peak-power and high repetition-rate. An important feature of the propose…
For a planar FEL configuration we study stimulated coherent spontaneous emission driven by a gradient of the bunch current in the presence of different levels of noise in bunches. To perform a vast amount of simulations required for obtaining statistically valid results, we developed a memory and time efficient one-dimensional simulation code based on the integral solution to a Klein-Gordon equation describing the field evolution. The longitudinal granularity of the electron bunch density originating from shot noise is maintained throughout the analysis. Three-dimensional effects like transver…

X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) is expected to be a cutting edge tool for fully coherent X-ray laser generation, and undulator taper technique is well-known for considerably increasing the efficiency of free-electron lasers (FELs). In order to combine the advantages of these two schemes, FEL amplifier seeded by XFELO is proposed by simply using a chirped electron beam. With the right choice of the beam parameters, the bunch tail is within the gain bandwidth of XFELO, and lase to saturation, which will be served as a seeding for further amplification. Meanwhile, the bunch head whic…
A new CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) at CERN will serve to study the drive beam generation for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). CTF3 has to accelerate a 3.5 A electron beam in almost fully-loaded structures. The pulse contains more than 2000 bunches, one in every second RF bucket, and has a length of more than one microsecond. Different options for the lattice of the drive-beam accelerator are presented, based on FODO-cells and triplets as well as solenoids. The transverse stability is simulated, including the effects of beam jitter, alignment and beam-based correction.
We propose a physical design of a compact all optical terahertz (THz)-driven electron source. The 300 mm accelerator beamline, powered by Joule level laser system, is easily to be integrated to tabletop scale. A dual-feed THz-driven electron gun with an exponential impedance, a tapered dielectric loaded cylindrical waveguide, THz-driven bunch compressors and permanent magnet solenoids (PMS) have been designed and optimized. Dynamics simulations show that the electron source can deliver a 19 fC, 3 MeV electron beams with a normalized transverse emittance of 0.079 π.mm.mrad. A minimum relative e…
We developed an exact analytical treatment for space-charge waves within a relativistic electron beam in terms of (self-reproducing) propagating eigenmodes. This result is of obvious theoretical relevance as it constitutes one of the few exact solution for the evolution of charged particles under the action of self-interactions. It also has clear numerical applications in particle accelerator physics where it can be used as the first self-consistent benchmark for space-charge simulation programs. Today our work is of practical relevance in FEL technology in relation with all those schemes wher…
In this article, a feasible switchyard design is proposed for the Shanghai soft x-ray free electron laser facility. In the proposed scheme, a switchyard is used to transport the electron beam to different undulator lines. Three-dimensional start-to-end simulations have been carried out to research the beam dynamic during transportation. The results show that the emittance of the electron beam increases less than 10%, at meanwhile, the peak current, the energy spread and the bunch length are not spoiled as the beam passes through the switchyard. The microbunching instability of the beam and the…
Laser-plasma acceleration (LPA) is a compact technique to accelerate electron bunches to highly relativistic energies, making it a promising candidate to power radiation sources for industrial or medical applications. We report on the generation of electron beams from an 80 MeV-level LPA setup based on ionisation injection (II) over a duration of 8 hours at a repetition rate of 2.5 Hz, resulting in 72,000 consecutive shots with charge injection and acceleration. Over the full operation time the moving averages of the total beam charge of 14.5 pC and the charge between 70-80 MeV did not drift o…
There are implementations and proposals for using microwave or optical radiation for electron acceleration, undulation, deflection, and spatial as well as temporal focusing. Using terahertz (THz) radiation in such applications can be superior to microwave or optical radiation since THz pulses can be generated with significantly smaller temporal jitter to the electron bunch to be manipulated as compared to microwave pulses, and contrary to the optical pulses, the much larger wavelength of THz pulses compares well with typical sizes of electron bunches. Recently generation of ultrashort THz puls…
Nonlinear dynamics can impact the performance of a particle accelerator in a number of different ways, depending on the type of the accelerator and the parameter regime in which it operates. Effects can range from minor changes in beam properties or behaviour, to serious limitations on beam stability and machine performance. In these notes, we provide a brief introduction to nonlinear dynamics in accelerators. After a review of some relevant results from linear dynamics, we outline some of the main ideas of nonlinear dynamics, framing the discussion in the context of two examples of different …
Electro-optical detection has proven to be a valuable technique to study temporal profiles of THz pulses with pulse durations down to femtoseconds. As the Coulomb field around a relativistic electron bunch resembles the current profile, electro-optical detection can be exploited for non-invasive bunch length measurements at accelerators. We have developed a very compact and robust electro-optical detection system based on spectral decoding for bunch length monitoring at the European XFEL with single-shot resolution better than 200~fs. Apart from the GaP crystal and the corresponding laser opti…
