Sub-picosecond compression by velocity bunching in a photo-injector

We present an experimental evidence of a bunch compression scheme that uses a traveling wave accelerating structure as a compressor. The bunch length issued from a laser-driven radio-frequency electron source was compressed by a factor >3 using an S-band traveling wave structure located immediately downstream from the electron source. Experimental data are found to be in good agreement with particle tracking simulations.

Simulation study of a photo-injector for brightness improvement in Thomson scattering x-ray source via ballistic bunching

Increasing peak brightness is beneficial to various applications of Thomson scattering x-ray source. Ballistic Bunching of Photo-Injected Electron Bunches with Dielectric-Lined Waveguide

We describe a simple technique to passively bunch non-ultrarelativistics ($\lesssim 10$~MeV) electron bunches produced in conventional photoinjectors. The scheme employs a dielectric-lined waveguide located downstream of the electron source to impress an energy modulation on a picosecond bunch. The energy modulation is then converted into a density modulation via ballistic bunching. The method is shown to support the generation of sub-picosecond bunch train with multi-kA peak currents. Micro-bunching for generating tunable narrow-band THz radiation at the FAST photoinjector

This paper presents expected THz radiation spectra emitted by micro-bunched electron beams produced using a slit-mask placed within a magnetic chicane in the FAST (Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology) electron injector at Fermilab. Systematic Studies of the Micro-Bunching Instability at Very Low Bunch Charges

At KARA, the KArlsruhe Research Accelerator of the KIT synchrotron, the so called short bunch operation mode allows the reduction of the bunch length down to a few picoseconds. The micro- bunching instability resulting from the high degree of longitudinal compression leads to fluctuations in the emitted THz radiation, referred to as bursting. Continuous bunch-by-bunch spectroscopic investigation of the micro-bunching instability

Electron accelerators and synchrotrons can be operated to provide short emission pulses due to longitudinally compressed or sub-structured electron bunches. Above a threshold current, the high charge density leads to the micro-bunching instability and the formation of sub-structures on the bunch shape. These time-varying sub-structures on bunches of picoseconds-long duration lead to bursts of coherent synchrotron radiation in the terahertz frequency range. Low Energy Spread Attosecond Bunching and Coherent Electron Acceleration in Dielectric Nanostructures

We demonstrate a compact technique to compress electron pulses to attosecond length, while keeping the energy spread reasonably small. The technique is based on Dielectric Laser Acceleration (DLA) in nanophotonic silicon structures. Unlike previous ballistic optical microbunching demonstrations, we use a modulator-demodulator scheme to compress phase space in the time and energy coordinates. Energy losses and efficiency of laser - electron X-ray generator for medical applications

A source of medical x-rays based on a 50 Mev storage ring and a quasi-continues picosecond laser is considered. It is shown that such generator produces useful X-ray flux with higher average power and higher efficiency than that of conventional X-ray tubes. The main energy losses are related to coherent synchrotron radiation. Taking this into account the required parameters of the storage ring and injector are determined.

Multi-bunch generation by thermionic gun

KEK-ATF is studying the low-emittance multi-bunch electron beam for the future linear collider. In ATF, thermionic gun is used to generate 20 bunches electron beam with the bunch spacing of 2.8 ns.
