Consider a fiber bundle in which the total space, the base space and the fiber are all symplectic manifolds. We study the relations between the quantization of these spaces. In particular, we discuss the geometric quantization of a vector bundle, as oppose to a line bundle, over the base space that recovers the standard geometric quantization of the total space.
n-symplectic geometry, a generalization of symplectic geometry on the cotangent bundle of a manifold M, is formulated on the bundle of linear frames LM using the Rn-valued soldering 1-form as the generalized n-symplectic potential. In this paper we use n-symplectic geometry on LRn to formulate a quantization scheme for a single particle moving in Rn. By retaining the essence of the standard axioms for quantization on T*Rn, but adapting them to LR^n, we show it is possible to construct a full polynomial quantization that is consistent with the Schrödinger representation on a 2n-dimensional subb…
The ground energy level of an oscillator cannot be zero because of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. We use methods from symplectic topology (Gromov's non-squeezing theorem, and the existence of symplectic capacities) to analyze and extend this heuristic observation to Liouville-integrable systems, and to propose a topological quantization scheme for such systems, thus extending previous results of ours.
The algebraic method of singular reduction is applied for non regular group action on manifolds which provides singular symplectic spaces. The problem of deformation quantization of the singular surfaces is the focus. For some examples of singular Poisson spaces the deformation quantization is explicitly constructed. In is shown that for the flat phase space with the classical moment map and the orthogonal group action the deformation quantization converges for the entire arguments of exponential type.
The Fedosov deformation quantization on a cotangent bundle with a symplectic connection induced by some linear symmetric connection on the base space is considered. A global construction of the symplectic homogeneous connection on the cotangent bundle modelled on the linear symmetric connection from the base space is proposed. Examples of the induced symplectic connection are given. A detailed analysis of the Abelian connection and flat sections representing special types of functions for this kind of symplectic connection is presented. Some properties of the *-product determined by the induce…
We establish the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization on symplectic manifolds of bounded geometry. The quantum space of this quantization is the spectral subspace of the renormalized Bochner Laplacian associated with some interval near zero. We show that this quantization has the correct semiclassical limit.
Noncommutative quantum mechanics on the plane has been widely studied in the literature. Here, we consider the problem using Isham's canonical group quantization scheme for which the primary object is the symmetry group that underlies the phase space. The noncommutativity of the configuration space coordinates requires us to introduce the noncommutative term in the symplectic structure of the system. This modified symplectic structure will modify the group acting on the configuration space from abelian $\mathbb{R}^2$ to a nonabelian one. As a result, the canonical group obtained is a deformed …
Geometric quantization of a Poisson manifold need not imply quantization of its symplectic leaves. We provide the leafwise geometric quantization of a Poisson manifold, seen as a foliated one, whose quantum algebra restricted to each leaf is quantized.
We study a notion of pre-quantization for $b$-symplectic manifolds. We use it to construct a formal geometric quantization of $b$-symplectic manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian torus actions with nonzero modular weight. We show that these quantizations are finite dimensional $T$-modules.
In the first part of this article we provide a geometrically oriented approach to the theory of orbispaces which originally had been introduced by Chen. We explain the notion of a vector orbibundle and characterize the good sections of a reduced vector orbibundle as the smooth stratified sections. In the second part of the article we elaborate on the quantizability of a symplectic orbispace. By adapting Fedosov's method to the orbispace setting we show that every symplectic orbispace has a deformation quantization. As a byproduct we obtain that every symplectic orbifold possesses a star produc…
In this paper we quantize symplectic dynamical r-matrices over a possibly nonabelian base. The proof is based on the fact that the existence of a star-product with a nice property (called strong invariance) is sufficient for the existence of a quantization. We also classify such quantizations and prove a quantum analogue of the classical composition formula for coboundary dynamical r-matrices.
A (biased and incomplete) review of the status of the theory of symplectic connections on supermanifolds is presented. Also, some comments regarding Fedosov's technique of quantization are made.
The main aim of this article is to show some intimate relations among the following three notions: (1) the metaplectic representation of $Sp(2n,\mathbb{R})$ and its extension to some semigroups, called the Olshanski semigroup for $Sp(2n,\mathbb{R})$ or Howe's oscillator semigroup, (2) antinormally-ordered quantizations on the phase space $\mathbb{R}^{2m}\cong\mathbb{C}^{m}$, (3) path integral quantizations where the paths are on the phase space $\mathbb{R}^{2m}\cong\mathbb{C}^{m}$. In the Main Theorem, the metaplectic representation $ρ(e^{X})$ ($X\in\mathfrak{sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$) is expressed …
A long-standing problem in quantum gravity and cosmology is the quantization of systems in which time evolution is generated by a constraint that must vanish on solutions. Here, an algebraic formulation of this problem is presented, together with new structures and results, which show that specific conditions need to be satisfied in order for well-defined evolution to be possible.
We present explicit universal strict deformation quantization formulae for actions of Iwasawa subgroups AN of SU(1,n). This answers a question raised by Rieffel.
In this paper we study overcomplete systems of coherent states associated to compact integral symplectic manifolds by geometric quantization. Our main goals are to give a systematic treatment of the construction of such systems and to collect some recent results. We begin by recalling the basic constructions of geometric quantization in both the Kahler and non-Kahler cases. We then study the reproducing kernels associated to the quantum Hilbert spaces and use them to define symplectic coherent states. The rest of the paper is dedicated to the properties of symplectic coherent states and the co…
In these notes we construct a quantization functor, associating an Hilbert space H(V) to a finite dimensional symplectic vector space V over a finite field F_q. As a result, we obtain a canonical model for the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(V). The main technical result is a proof of a stronger form of the Stone-von Neumann theorem for the Heisenberg group over F_q. Our result answers, for the case of the Heisenberg group, a question of Kazhdan about the possible existence of a canonical Hilbert space attached to a coadjoint orbit of a general unipotent group over F_q.
We develop a mathematically well-defined path integral formalism for general symplectic manifolds. We argue that in order to make a path integral quantization covariant under general coordinate transformations on the phase space and involve a genuine functional measure that is both finite and countably additive, the phase space manifold should be equipped with a Riemannian structure (metric). A suitable method to calculate the metric is also proposed.
We introduce geometric quantization in the setting of shifted symplectic structures. We define Lagrangian fibrations and prequantizations of shifted symplectic stacks and their geometric quantization. In addition, we study many examples including symplectic groupoids, Hamiltonian spaces and moduli spaces of flat connections. In the case of Hamiltonian spaces we prove a derived analog of the "quantization commutes with reduction" principle.
A. Weinstein has conjectured a nice looking formula for a deformed product of functions on a hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type. We derive such a formula for symmetric symplectic spaces using ideas from geometric quantization and prequantization of symplectic groupoids. We compute the result explicitly for the natural 2-dimensional symplectic manifolds: the euclidean plane, the sphere and the hyperbolic plane. For the euclidean plane we obtain the well known Moyal-Weyl product. The other cases show that Weinstein's original idea should be interpreted with care. We conclude with comm…
The Feynman path integral is used to quantize the symplectic leaves of the Poisson-Lie group SU(2)*. In this way we obtain the unitary representations of U_q(su(2)). This is achieved by finding explicit Darboux coordinates and then using a phase space path integral. I discuss the *-structure of SU(2)* and give a detailed description of its leaves using various parametrizations and also compare the results with the path integral quantization of spin.
This paper contains three results about generating functions for Lie-theoretic integration of Poisson brackets and their relation to quantization. In the first, we show how to construct a generating function associated to the germ of any local symplectic groupoid and we provide an explicit (smooth, non-formal) universal formula $S_π$ for integrating any Poisson structure $π$ on a coordinate space. The second result involves the relation to semiclassical quantization. We show that the formal Taylor expansion of $S_{tπ}$ around $t=0$ yields an extract of Kontsevich's star product formula based o…
In the framework of a mesoscopical model for dielectric media we provide an analytical description for the electromagnetic field confined in a cylindrical cavity containing a finite dielectric sample. This system is apted to simulate the electromagnetic field in a optic fiber, in which two different regions, a vacuum region and a dielectric one, appear. A complete description for the scattering basis is introduced, together with field quantization and the two-point function. Furthermore, we also determine soliton-like solutions in the dielectric, propagating in the sample of nonlinear dielectr…
We give a new construction of strict deformation quantization of symplectic manifolds equipped with a proper Lagrangian fiber bundle structure, whose representation spaces are the quantum Hilbert spaces obtained by geometric quantization. The construction can be regarded as a "lattice approximation of the correspondence between differential operators and principal symbols". We analyze the corresponding formal deformation quantization. We also investigate into relations between our construction and Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization.
We use the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz operators of Ma and Marinescu to study the spaces of holomorphic sections of a prequantizing line bundle over compact Kähler manifolds under deformations of the complex structure. We show that the parallel transport in the induced vector bundle over the deformation space behaves like a Toeplitz operator, and compute its first coefficient. We then use this result to establish a semi-classical trace formula for the induced quantization of symplectic maps, and give an application to Witten's asymptotic expansion conjecture for the quantum representations of t…
Symplectic topology has become a thriving area of research in mathematics and physics since Gromov's discovery in 1985 of a surprising property of canonical transformations (and hence of hamiltonian flows),"the principle of the symplectic camel". We exploit this property to show that the usually EBK quantization is equivalent to the physical assumption that the only allowewed semiclassical states are those with symplectic area nh+h/2. We introduce the terminology "quantum blobs" for these states. Quantum blobs are more general and powerful tools than the usual phase space cells of quantum stat…
We give an explicit form of the symplectic groupoid that integrates the semiclassical standard Podles sphere. We show that Sheu's groupoid, whose convolution C*-algebra quantizes the sphere, appears as the groupoid of the Bohr-Sommerfeld leaves of a (singular) real polarization of the symplectic groupoid. By using a complex polarization we recover the convolution algebra on the space of polarized sections. We stress the role of the modular class in the definition of the scalar product in order to get the correct quantum space.
These are lecture notes for the course "Poisson geometry and deformation quantization" given by the author during the fall semester 2020 at the University of Zurich. The first chapter is an introduction to differential geometry, where we cover manifolds, tensor fields, integration on manifolds, Stokes' theorem, de Rham's theorem and Frobenius' theorem. The second chapter covers the most important notions of symplectic geometry such as Lagrangian submanifolds, Weinstein's tubular neighborhood theorem, Hamiltonian mechanics, moment maps and symplectic reduction. The third chapter gives an introd…
As a detailed application of the BV-BFV formalism for the quantization of field theories on manifolds with boundary, this note describes a quantization of the relational symplectic groupoid for a constant Poisson structure. The presence of mixed boundary conditions and the globalization of results is also addressed. In particular, the paper includes an extension to space-times with boundary of some formal geometry considerations in the BV-BFV formalism, and specifically introduces into the BV-BFV framework a "differential" version of the classical and quantum master equations. The quantization…
We propose that geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds is the arrow part of a functor, whose object part is deformation quantization of Poisson manifolds. The `quantization commutes with reduction' conjecture of Guillemin and Sternberg then becomes a special case of the functoriality of quantization. In fact, our formulation yields almost unlimited generalizations of the Guillemin--Sternberg conjecture, extending it, for example, to arbitrary Lie groups or even Lie groupoids. Technically, this involves symplectic reduction and Weinstein's dual pairs on the classical side, and Kasparov'…
We study the relation between a given set of equations of motion in configuration space and a Poisson bracket. A Poisson structure is consistent with the equations of motion if the symplectic form satisfy some consistency conditions. When the symplectic structure is commutative these conditions are the Helmholtz integrability equations for the nonrestricted inverse problem of the calculus of variations. We have found the corresponding consistency conditions for the symplectic noncommutative case.
In this paper we use techniques of geometric quantization to give a geometric interpretation of the Peter--Weyl theorem. We present a novel approach to half-form corrected geometric quantization in a specific type of non-Kähler polarizations and study one important class of examples, namely cotangent bundles of compact semi-simple groups $K$. Our main results state that this canonically defined polarization occurs in the geodesic boundary of the space of $K\times K$-invariant Kähler polarizations equipped with Mabuchi's metric, and that its half-form corrected quantization is isomorphic to the…
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$, and let $D \subset X$ be a fixed finite subset. Let $\mathcal{M}(r,d,α)$ denote the moduli space of stable parabolic $G$-bundles (where $G$ is a complex orthogonal or symplectic group) of rank $r$, degree $d$ and weight type $α$ over $X$. Hitchin discovered that the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of stable bundles on an algebraic curve is an algebraically completely integrable system fibered, over a space of invariant polynomials, either by a Jacobian or a Prym variety of spectral curves. In this paper we study the Hitchin fibers …
In this paper, we construct a quantization functor, associating a complex vector space H(V) to a finite dimensional symplectic vector space V over a finite field of odd characteristic. As a result, we obtain a canonical model for the Weil representation of the symplectic group Sp(V). The main new technical result is a proof of a stronger form of the Stone-von Neumann property for the Heisenberg group. Our result answers, for the case of the Heisenberg group, a question of Kazhdan about the possible existence of a canonical vector space attached to a coadjoint orbit of a general unipotent group…
We define and study the notion of quantum polarity, which is a kind of geometric Fourier transform between sets of positions and sets of momenta. Extending previous work of ours, we show that the orthogonal projections of the covariance ellipsoid of a quantum state on the configuration and momentum spaces form what we call a dual quantum pair. We thereafter show that quantum polarity allows solving the Pauli reconstruction problem for Gaussian wavefunctions. The notion of quantum polarity exhibits a strong interplay between the uncertainty principle and symplectic and convex geometry and our a…
This paper is about the role of Planck's constant, $\hbar$, in the geometric quantization of Poisson manifolds using symplectic groupoids. In order to construct a strict deformation quantization of a given Poisson manifold, one can use all possible rescalings of the Poisson structure, which can be combined into a single "Heisenberg-Poisson" manifold. The new coordinate on this manifold is identified with $\hbar$. I present an explicit construction for a symplectic groupoid integrating a Heisenberg-Poisson manifold and discuss its geometric quantization. I show that in cases where $\hbar$ canno…
We study the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization on symplectic manifolds making use of the full off-diagonal asymptotic expansion of the Bergman kernel. We give also a characterization of Toeplitz operators in terms of their asymptotic expansion. The semi-classical limit properties of the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization for non-compact manifolds and orbifolds are also established.
Consider a group $Γ$ acting on a formal (Fedosov) deformation quantization $\mathbb{A}_\hbar(M)$ of a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$. This canonically induces an action of $Γ$ by symplectomorphisms on $M$. We examine the reverse problem of extending group actions by symplectomorphisms to the deformation quantization. To do this we first define a notion of extension that does not impose restrictions on the Fedosov connection realizing $\mathbb{A}_\hbar(M)$ in its gauge equivalence class by considering composition of pull-back with certain inner automorphisms of sections of the Weyl bundle. We refo…
Many interesting C*-algebras can be viewed as quantizations of Poisson manifolds. I propose that a Poisson manifold may be quantized by a twisted polarized convolution C*-algebra of a symplectic groupoid. Toward this end, I define polarizations for Lie groupoids and sketch the construction of this algebra. A large number of examples show that this idea unifies previous geometric constructions, including geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds and the C*-algebra of a Lie groupoid.
For a compact Lie group $G$ we consider a lattice gauge model given by the $G$-Hamiltonian system which consists of the cotangent bundle of a power of $G$ with its canonical symplectic structure and standard moment map. We explicitly construct a Fedosov quantization of the underlying symplectic manifold using the Levi-Civita connection of the Killing metric on $G$. We then explain and refine quantized homological reduction for the construction of a star product on the symplectically reduced space in the singular case. Afterwards we show that for $G = \operatorname{SU} (2)$ the main hypotheses …
We describe three perspectives on higher quantization, using the example of magnetic Poisson structures which embody recent discussions of nonassociativity in quantum mechanics with magnetic monopoles and string theory with non-geometric fluxes. We survey approaches based on deformation quantization of twisted Poisson structures, symplectic realization of almost symplectic structures, and geometric quantization using 2-Hilbert spaces of sections of suitable bundle gerbes. We compare and contrast these perspectives, describing their advantages and shortcomings in each case, and mention many ope…
