We introduce geometric quantization in the setting of shifted symplectic structures. We define Lagrangian fibrations and prequantizations of shifted symplectic stacks and their geometric quantization. In addition, we study many examples including symplectic groupoids, Hamiltonian spaces and moduli spaces of flat connections. In the case of Hamiltonian spaces we prove a derived analog of the "quantization commutes with reduction" principle.
In this paper, we investigate the structure of the convergent quantization of the 1-shifted cotangent bundle $S$ of a smooth scheme $X$ over a perfect field of positive characteristic. The quantization is an $E_2$-algebra over the Frobenius twist $S'$ of the 1-shifted cotangent bundle which restricted to the zero section $X'\rightarrow S'$ is weakly $E_2$-Morita equivalent to the structure sheaf $\mathscr O_{X'}$ of the Frobenius twist $X'$ of $X$. Explicitly, we show that the $(\infty,2)$-category of coherent (left-)modules over $\mathscr O_{X'}$ is equivalent to the full subcategory of the $…
We extend results about $n$-shifted coisotropic structures from part I of this work to the setting of derived Artin stacks. We show that an intersection of coisotropic morphisms carries a Poisson structure of shift one less. We also compare non-degenerate shifted coisotropic structures and shifted Lagrangian structures and show that there is a natural equivalence between the two spaces in agreement with the classical result. Finally, we define quantizations of $n$-shifted coisotropic structures and show that they exist for $n>1$.
A comparison on some facts concerning the geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds is presented here. Criticism, facts and improvements on the sophisticated theory of geometric quantization are presented touching briefly, all the "salient points of the theory". The unfamiliar reader can consider this as a "soft" introduction to the topic.
We review the definition of geometric quantization, which begins with defining a mathematical framework for the algebra of observables that holds equally well for classical and quantum mechanics. We then discuss prequantization, and go into details of the general method of quantization with respect to a polarization using densities and half-forms. This has applications to the theory of unitary group representations and coadjoint orbits.
Using the classification of formal deformation quantizations, and the formal, algebraic index theorem, I give a simple proof as to which formal deformation quantization (modulo isomorphism) is derived from a given geometric quantization.
We construct the geometric quantization of a compact surface using a singular real polarization coming from an integrable system. Such a polarization always has singularities, which we assume to be of nondegenerate type. In particular, we compute the effect of hyperbolic singularities, which make an infinite-dimensional contribution to the quantization, thus showing that this quantization depends strongly on polarization.
We study a notion of pre-quantization for $b$-symplectic manifolds. We use it to construct a formal geometric quantization of $b$-symplectic manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian torus actions with nonzero modular weight. We show that these quantizations are finite dimensional $T$-modules.
A. Weinstein has conjectured a nice looking formula for a deformed product of functions on a hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type. We derive such a formula for symmetric symplectic spaces using ideas from geometric quantization and prequantization of symplectic groupoids. We compute the result explicitly for the natural 2-dimensional symplectic manifolds: the euclidean plane, the sphere and the hyperbolic plane. For the euclidean plane we obtain the well known Moyal-Weyl product. The other cases show that Weinstein's original idea should be interpreted with care. We conclude with comm…
In this paper, we study quantization on a compact integral symplectic manifold $X$ with transversal real polarizations. In the case of complex polarizations, namely $X$ is Kähler equipped with transversal complex polarizations $T^{1, 0}X, T^{0, 1}X$, geometric quantization gives $H^0(X, L^{\otimes k})$'s. They are acted upon by $\mathcal{C}^\infty(X, \mathbb{C})$ via Toeplitz operators as $\hbar = \tfrac{1}{k} \to 0^+$, determining a deformation quantization $(\mathcal{C}^\infty(X, \mathbb{C})[[\hbar]], \star)$ of $X$.\par We investigate the real analogue to these, comparing deformation quanti…
Kostant gave a model for the real geometric quantization associated to polarizations via the cohomology associated to the sheaf of flat sections of a pre-quantum line bundle. This model is well-adapted for real polarizations given by integrable systems and toric manifolds. In the latter case, the cohomology can be computed counting integral points inside the associated Delzant polytope. In this article we extend Kostant's geometric quantization to semitoric integrable systems and almost toric manifolds. In these cases the dimension of the acting torus is smaller than half of the dimension of t…
In this paper we use techniques of geometric quantization to give a geometric interpretation of the Peter--Weyl theorem. We present a novel approach to half-form corrected geometric quantization in a specific type of non-Kähler polarizations and study one important class of examples, namely cotangent bundles of compact semi-simple groups $K$. Our main results state that this canonically defined polarization occurs in the geodesic boundary of the space of $K\times K$-invariant Kähler polarizations equipped with Mabuchi's metric, and that its half-form corrected quantization is isomorphic to the…
These notes give an introduction to the quantization procedure called geometric quantization. It gives a definition of the mathematical background for its understanding and introductions to classical and quantum mechanics, to differentiable manifolds, symplectic manifolds and the geometry of line bundles and connections. Moreover, these notes are endowed with several exercises and examples.
In this paper we study overcomplete systems of coherent states associated to compact integral symplectic manifolds by geometric quantization. Our main goals are to give a systematic treatment of the construction of such systems and to collect some recent results. We begin by recalling the basic constructions of geometric quantization in both the Kahler and non-Kahler cases. We then study the reproducing kernels associated to the quantum Hilbert spaces and use them to define symplectic coherent states. The rest of the paper is dedicated to the properties of symplectic coherent states and the co…
Using geometric quantization, we represent curve operators in the TQFT of Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev with jauge group SU_2 as Toeplitz operators with symbols corresponding to trace functions. As an application, we show that eigenvectors of these operators are concentrated near the level sets of these trace functions, and obtain asymptotic estimates of pairings of such eigenvectors. This yields an asymptotic for some matrix coefficients of the image of mapping classes by quantum representations.
In this article we give a universal model for geometric quantization associated to a real polarization given by an integrable system with non-degenerate singularities. This universal model goes one step further than the previous cotangent models by both considering singular orbits and adding to the cotangent models a model for the prequantum line bundle. These singularities are generic in the sense that are given by Morse-type functions and include elliptic, hyperbolic and focus-focus singularities. Examples of systems admitting such singularities are toric, semitoric and almost toric manifold…
The prequantization map for a Poisson-Gerstenhaber algebra of dynamical variables represented by differential forms within the polysymplectic formulation of the De Donder--Weyl covariant Hamiltonian field theory is presented and the corresponding prequantum Schroedinger equation for a non-homogeneous form valued wave function is derived. This is the first step toward understanding the procedures of covariant precanonical field quantization from the point of view of geometric quantization.
In this article we develop tools to compute the Geometric Quantization of a symplectic manifold with respect to a regular Lagrangian foliation via sheaf cohomology and obtain important new applications in the case of real polarizations. The starting point is the definition of representation spaces due to Kostant. Besides the classical examples of Gelfand-Cetlin systems due to Guillemin and Sternberg very few examples of explicit computations of real polarizations are known. The computation of Geometric Quantization for Gelfand-Cetlin systems is based on a theorem due to Śniatycki for fibration…
We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin-Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.
This paper is a short version of the author habilitation thesis. The main results have been already published but here a lot of details are clarified. As well we add some new results: we discuss some quasi classical limit of ALG(a) - quantization, mention some topological properties of the moduli space of Bohr - Sommerfeld Lagrangian cycles of fixed type and investigate some properties of the Kaehler structure on it.
In this paper we pursue the study of formal geometric quantization of non-compact Hamiltonian manifolds. Our main result is the proof that two quantization process coincide. This fact was obtained by Ma and Zhang in the preprint arXiv:0812.3989 by completely different means.
In a series of papers on Bohr-Sommerfeld-Heisenberg quantization of completely integrable systems we interpreted shifting operators as quantization of functions ${\mathrm{e}}^{ \pm iθ_j}$ , where $(I_j , θ_j )$ are action angle coordinates. The aim of this paper is to show how these operators occur in geometric quantization.
We use the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz operators of Ma and Marinescu to study the quantum Hamiltonian dynamics associated with classical Hamiltonian flows over closed prequantized symplectic manifolds in the context of geometric quantization of Kostant and Souriau. We express the associated evolution operators via parallel transport in the quantum spaces over the induced path of almost complex structures, and we establish various semi-classical estimates. In particular, we establish a Gutzwiller trace formula for the Kostant-Souriau operator and compute explicitly the leading term. We then desc…
The paper presents an extension of the geometric quantization procedure to integrable, big-isotropic structures. We obtain a generalization of the cohomology integrality condition, we discuss geometric structures on the total space of the corresponding principal circle bundle and we extend the notion of a polarization.
Adler had shown in 1979 that the Toda system can be given a coad- joint orbit description. We quantize the Toda system by viewing it as a single orbit of a multiplicative group of lower triangular matrices of determinant one with pos- itive diagonal entries. We get a unitary representation of the group with square integrable polarized sections of the quantization as the module . We find the Rawnsley coherent states after a completion of the above space of sections. We also find non-unitary finite dimensional quantum Hilbert spaces for the system.
We introduce geometric quantization for constant rank presymplectic structures with Riemannian null foliation and compact leaf closure space. We prove a quantization-commutes-with-reduction theorem in this context. Examples related to symplectic toric quasi-folds, suspensions of isometric actions of discrete groups, and K-contact manifolds are discussed.
In this paper, Hamiltonian monodromy is studied from the point of view of geometric quantization abd theta functions, and various differential geometric aspects thereof are dealt with, all related to holonomies of suitable flat connections.
We establish a geometric quantization formula for a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group acting on a noncompact symplectic manifold with proper moment map.
The aim of this article is to study the functorial properties of the ``formal geometric quantization'' procedure which is defined for non-compact Hamiltonian manifolds (when the moment map is proper). For this purpose, we introduce a technique of symplectic cutting that uses the wonderfull compactification of Concini-Procesi.
We construct Hermitian representations of Lie algebroids and associated unitary representations of Lie groupoids by a geometric quantization procedure. For this purpose we introduce a new notion of Hamiltonian Lie algebroid actions. The first step of our procedure consists of the construction of a prequantization line bundle. Next, we discuss a version of Kähler quantization suitable for this setting. We proceed by defining a Marsden-Weinstein quotient for our setting and prove a ``quantization commutes with reduction'' theorem. We explain how our geometric quantization procedure relates to a …
We use the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz operators of Ma and Marinescu to study the spaces of holomorphic sections of a prequantizing line bundle over compact Kähler manifolds under deformations of the complex structure. We show that the parallel transport in the induced vector bundle over the deformation space behaves like a Toeplitz operator, and compute its first coefficient. We then use this result to establish a semi-classical trace formula for the induced quantization of symplectic maps, and give an application to Witten's asymptotic expansion conjecture for the quantum representations of t…
The so-called quantization problem in geometric quantization is asking whether the space of wave functions is independent of the choice of polarization. In this paper, we apply SYZ transforms to solve the quantization problem in two cases: (1) semi-flat Lagrangian torus fibrations over complete compact integral affine manifolds, and (2) projective toric manifolds. More precisely, we prove that the space of wave functions associated to the real polarization is canonically isomorphic to that associated to a complex polarization via SYZ transforms in both cases.
Early in 2011 Sam Evens acting on behalf of the organizers of the summer school on quantization at Notre Dame asked me to give a short series of lectures on geometric quantization. These lectures were meant to prepare a group of graduate mathematics students for talks at the conference on quantization which were to follow the summer school. The notes that follow resulted from this request. They are a mostly faithful record of four one-hour lectures (except lecture 4) plus two appendices: the first one recalls bits and pieces of category theory; the second discusses densities.
In the framework of geometric quantization we extend the Bohr-Sommerfeld rules to a full quantization theory which resembles Heisenberg's matrix theory. This extension is possible because Bohr-Sommerfeld rules not only provide an orthogonal basis in the space of quantum states, but also give a lattice structure to this basis. This permits the definition of appropriate shifting operators. As examples, we discuss the 1-dimensional harmonic oscillator and the coadjoint orbits of the rotation group.
I repeat my definition for quantization of a vector bundle. For the case of Toeplitz and geometric quantization of a compact Kaehler Manifold, I give a construction for quantizing any smooth vector bundle which depends functorially on a choice of connection on the bundle.
We study the formal geometric quantization of $b^m$-symplectic manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian actions of a torus $T$ with nonzero leading modular weight. The resulting virtual $T$-modules are finite dimensional when $m$ is odd, as in [GMW2]; when $m$ is even, these virtual modules are not finite dimensional, and we compute the asymptotics of the representations for large weight.
We introduce a method of geometric quantization for compact $b$-symplectic manifolds in terms of the index of an Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) boundary value problem. We show further that b-symplectic manifolds have canonical Spin-c structures in the usual sense, and that the APS index above coincides with the index of the Spin-c Dirac operator. We show that if the manifold is endowed with a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group with non-zero modular weights, then this method satisfies the Guillemin-Sternberg ``quantization commutes with reduction'' property. In particular our quant…
We formulate a quantization commutes with reduction principle in the setting where the Lie group $G$, the symplectic manifold it acts on, and the orbit space of the action may all be noncompact. It is assumed that the action is proper, and the zero set of a deformation vector field, associated to the momentum map and an equivariant family of inner products on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of $G$, is $G$-cocompact. The central result establishes an asymptotic version of this quantization commutes with reduction principle. Using an equivariant family of inner products on $\mathfrak{g}$ instead …
We show that the results of the paper Symplectic Reduction and Riemann-Roch for Circle Actions of Duistermaat, Guillemin, Meinrenken and Wu can be expressed entirely in K-theory. We show that their quantization is simply a pushforward in K-theory, and use Lerman's symplectic cutting and the localization theorem in equivariant K-theory to prove that quantization commutes with reduction. Only the case where the action is free on the zero level set of the moment map is addressed.
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group acting on a stable complex manifold $M$ with equivariant vector bundle $E$. Besides, suppose $ϕ$ is an equivariant map from $M$ to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We can define some equivalence relation on the triples $(M, E, ϕ)$ such that the set of equivalence classes form an abelian group. In this paper, we will show that this group is isomorphic to a completion of character ring $R(G)$. In this framework, we provide a geometric proof to the "Quantization Commutes with Reduction" conjecture in the non-compact setting.
In this paper, we begin a quantization program for nilpotent orbits of a real semisimple Lie group. These orbits and their covers generalize the symplectic vector space. A complex structure polarizing the orbit and invariant under a maximal compact subgroup is provided by the Kronheimer-Vergne Kaehler structure. We outline a geometric program for quantizing the orbit with respect to this polarization. We work out this program in detail for minimal nilpotent orbits in the non-Hermitian case. The Hilbert space of quantization consists of holomorphic half-forms on the orbit. We construct the repr…
We define prequantization for Dirac manifolds to generalize known procedures for Poisson and (pre) symplectic manifolds by using characteristic distributions obtained from 2-cocycles associated to Dirac structures. Given a Dirac manifold $(M,D)$, we construct Poisson structure on the space of admissible functions on $(M,D)$ and a representation of the Poisson algebra to establish the prequantization condition of $(M,D)$ in terms of a Lie algebroid cohomology. Additional to this, we introduce a polarization for a Dirac manifold $M$ and discuss procedures for quantization in two cases where $M$ …
The geometric quantization of a symplectic manifold endowed with a prequantum bundle and a metaplectic structure is defined by means of an integrable complex structure. We prove that its semi-classical limit does not depend on the choice of the complex structure. We show this in two ways. First, by introducing unitary identifications between the quantum spaces associated to the various complex polarizations and second, by defining an asymptotically flat connection in the bundle of quantum spaces over the space of complex structures. Furthermore Berezin-Toeplitz operators are intertwined by the…
In this paper, we show the spectral convergence result of $\overline{\partial}$-Laplacians when $(X,ω)$ is a compact toric symplectic manifold equipped with the natural prequantum line bundle $L$. We consider a family $\{ J_s\}_s$ of $ω$-compatible complex structures tending to the large complex structure limit, and obtain the spectral convergence of $\overline{\partial}$-Laplacians acting on $L^k$.
Based on work done by Bonechi, Cattaneo, Felder and Zabzine on Poisson sigma models, we formally show that Kontsevich's star product can be obtained from the twisted convolution algebra of the geometric quantization of a Lie 2-groupoid, one which integrates the Poisson structure. We show that there is an analogue of the Poisson sigma model which is valued in Lie 1-groupoids and which can often be defined non-perturbatively; it can be obtained by symplectic reduction using the quantization of the Lie 2-groupoid. We call these groupoid-valued sigma models and we argue that, when they exist, they…
In quantum mechanics, the momentum space and position space wave functions are related by the Fourier transform. We investigate how the Fourier transform arises in the context of geometric quantization. We consider a Hilbert space bundle H over the space J of compatible complex structures on a symplectic vector space. This bundle is equipped with a projectively flat connection. We show that parallel transport along a geodesic in the bundle H -> J is a rescaled orthogonal projection or Bogoliubov transformation. We then construct the kernel for the integral parallel transport operator. Finally,…
Motivated by applications to multiplicity formulas in index theory, we study a family of distributions $Θ(m;k)$ associated to a piecewise quasi-polynomial function $m$. The family is indexed by an integer $k \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, and admits an asymptotic expansion as $k \rightarrow \infty$, which generalizes the expansion obtained in the Euler-Maclaurin formula. When $m$ is the multiplicity function arising from the quantization of a symplectic manifold, the leading term of the asymptotic expansion is the Duistermaat-Heckman measure. Our main result is that $m$ is uniquely determined by a coll…
