A comparison on some facts concerning the geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds is presented here. Criticism, facts and improvements on the sophisticated theory of geometric quantization are presented touching briefly, all the "salient points of the theory". The unfamiliar reader can consider this as a "soft" introduction to the topic.

We study the prequantization of quasi-presymplectic groupoids and their Hamiltonian spaces using $S^1$-gerbes. We give a geometric description of the integrality condition. As an application, we study the prequantization of the quasi-Hamiltonian $G$-spaces of Alekseev--Malkin--Meinrenken.
A geometric prequantization formula for the Poisson-Gerstenhaber bracket of forms found within the DeDonder-Weyl Hamiltonian formalism earlier is presented. The related aspects of covariant geometric quantization of field theories are sketched. In particular, the importance of the framework of Clifford and spinor bundles and superconnections in this context is underlined.
We review the definition of geometric quantization, which begins with defining a mathematical framework for the algebra of observables that holds equally well for classical and quantum mechanics. We then discuss prequantization, and go into details of the general method of quantization with respect to a polarization using densities and half-forms. This has applications to the theory of unitary group representations and coadjoint orbits.
We define prequantization for Dirac manifolds to generalize known procedures for Poisson and (pre) symplectic manifolds by using characteristic distributions obtained from 2-cocycles associated to Dirac structures. Given a Dirac manifold $(M,D)$, we construct Poisson structure on the space of admissible functions on $(M,D)$ and a representation of the Poisson algebra to establish the prequantization condition of $(M,D)$ in terms of a Lie algebroid cohomology. Additional to this, we introduce a polarization for a Dirac manifold $M$ and discuss procedures for quantization in two cases where $M$ …
We introduce geometric quantization in the setting of shifted symplectic structures. We define Lagrangian fibrations and prequantizations of shifted symplectic stacks and their geometric quantization. In addition, we study many examples including symplectic groupoids, Hamiltonian spaces and moduli spaces of flat connections. In the case of Hamiltonian spaces we prove a derived analog of the "quantization commutes with reduction" principle.
Classical mechanics has a natural mathematical setting in symplectic geometry and it may be asked if the same is true for quantum mechanics. More precisely, is it possible to capture certain quantum idiosyncrasies within the symplectic framework of classical mechanics? Beginning with Dirac, the idea of quantizing a classical system involved associating the phase space variables with Hermitian operators which act on some Hilbert space, as well as associating the Poisson bracket on the phase space with the commutator for the operators. Mathematically the phase space is associated with some sympl…
The prequantization map for a Poisson-Gerstenhaber algebra of dynamical variables represented by differential forms within the polysymplectic formulation of the De Donder--Weyl covariant Hamiltonian field theory is presented and the corresponding prequantum Schroedinger equation for a non-homogeneous form valued wave function is derived. This is the first step toward understanding the procedures of covariant precanonical field quantization from the point of view of geometric quantization.
A. Weinstein has conjectured a nice looking formula for a deformed product of functions on a hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type. We derive such a formula for symmetric symplectic spaces using ideas from geometric quantization and prequantization of symplectic groupoids. We compute the result explicitly for the natural 2-dimensional symplectic manifolds: the euclidean plane, the sphere and the hyperbolic plane. For the euclidean plane we obtain the well known Moyal-Weyl product. The other cases show that Weinstein's original idea should be interpreted with care. We conclude with comm…
We construct Hermitian representations of Lie algebroids and associated unitary representations of Lie groupoids by a geometric quantization procedure. For this purpose we introduce a new notion of Hamiltonian Lie algebroid actions. The first step of our procedure consists of the construction of a prequantization line bundle. Next, we discuss a version of Kähler quantization suitable for this setting. We proceed by defining a Marsden-Weinstein quotient for our setting and prove a ``quantization commutes with reduction'' theorem. We explain how our geometric quantization procedure relates to a …
In this note we point out the striking relation between the conditions arising within geometric quantization and the non-perturbative Poisson sigma model. Starting from the Poisson sigma model, we analyze necessary requirements on the path integral measure which imply a certain integrality condition for the Poisson cohomology class $[α]$. The same condition was considered before by Crainic and Zhu but in a different context. In the case when $[α]$ is in the image of the sharp map we reproduce the Vaisman's condition for prequantizable Poisson manifolds. For integrable Poisson manifolds we show…
In this paper we use techniques of geometric quantization to give a geometric interpretation of the Peter--Weyl theorem. We present a novel approach to half-form corrected geometric quantization in a specific type of non-Kähler polarizations and study one important class of examples, namely cotangent bundles of compact semi-simple groups $K$. Our main results state that this canonically defined polarization occurs in the geodesic boundary of the space of $K\times K$-invariant Kähler polarizations equipped with Mabuchi's metric, and that its half-form corrected quantization is isomorphic to the…
We study the dependence of geometric quantization of the standard symplectic torus on the choice of invariant polarization. Real and mixed polarizations are interpreted as degenerate complex structures. Using a weak version of the equations of covariant constancy, and the Weil-Brezin expansion to describe distributional sections, we give a unified analytical description of the quantization spaces for all nonnegative polarizations. The Blattner-Kostant-Sternberg (BKS) pairing maps between half-form corrected quantization spaces for different polarizations are shown to be transitive and related …
We introduce a pre-symplectic structure on the space of connections in a G-principal bundle over a four-manifold and a Hamiltonian action on it of the group of gauge transformations that are trivial on the boundary. The moment map is given by the square of curvature so that the 0-level set is the space of flat connections. Thus the moduli space of flat connections is endowed with a pre-symplectic structure. In case when the four-manifold is null-cobordant we shall construct, on the moduli space of connections, as well as on that of flat connections, a hermitian line bundle with connection whos…
