An algorithm for studing the symmetrical properties of the partial differential equation of the type Lu=0 is proposed. By symmetry of this equation we mean the operators Q satisfying commutational relations of order p more than p=1 on the solutions u: [L...[L,Q]...]u=0. It is shown, that within the framework of the proposed method with p=2 the relativistic D'Alembert and Maxwell equations are the Galilei symmetrical ones. Analogously, with p=2 the Galilei symmetrical Schroedinger equation is the relativistic symmetrical one. In both cases the standard symmetries are realized with p=1.
A role of skew-symmetric differential forms in mathematical physics relates to the fact that they reflect the properties of conservation laws. The closed exterior forms correspond to the conservation laws for physical fields, whereas the evolutionary forms correspond to the conservation laws for material media. Skew-symmetric differential forms can describe a conjugacy of any objects (that correspond to the conservation laws). The closed exterior forms describe conjugated objects. And the evolutionary forms, whose basis are deforming manifolds, describe the process of conjugating objects and o…
The mathematical structure of the Born-Infeld field equations was analyzed from the point of view of the symmetries. To this end, the field equations were written in the most compact form by means of quaternionic operators constructed according to all the symmetries of the theory, including the extension to a non-commutative structure. The quaternionic structure of the phase space was explicitly derived and described from the Hamiltonian point of view, and the analogy between the BI theory and the Maxwell (linear) electrodynamics in curved space-time was explicitly shown. Our results agree wit…
It is known that many equations of interest in Mathematical Physics display solutions which are only asymptotically invariant under transformations (e.g. scaling and/or translations) which are not symmetries of the considered equation. In this note we extend the approach to asymptotic symmetries for the analysis of PDEs, to the case of difference equations.
This work represents a PhD thesis concerning three main topics. The first one deals with the study and applications of Lie systems with compatible geometric structures, e.g. symplectic, Poisson, Dirac, Jacobi, among others. Many new Lie systems admitting Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebras of Hamiltonian vector fields relative to the above mentioned geometric structures are analyzed and their importance is illustrated by their appearances in physical, biological and mathematical models. The second part details the study of Lie symmetries and reductions of relevant hierarchies of differential equati…
Essential properties of semiclassical approximation for quantum mechanics are viewed as axioms of an abstract semiclassical mechanics. Its symmetry properties are discussed. Semiclassical systems being invariant under Lie groups are considered. An infinitesimal analog of group relation is written. Sufficient conditions for reconstructing semiclassical group transformations (integrability of representation of Lie algebra) are discussed. The obtained results may be used for mathematical proof of Poincare invariance of semiclasical Hamiltonian field theory and for investigation of quantum anomali…
Selected applications of symmetry methods in the atmospheric sciences are reviewed briefly. In particular, focus is put on the utilisation of the classical Lie symmetry approach to derive classes of exact solutions from atmospheric models. This is illustrated with the barotropic vorticity equation. Moreover, the possibility for construction of partially-invariant solutions is discussed for this model. A further point is a discussion of using symmetries for relating different classes of differential equations. This is illustrated with the spherical and the potential vorticity equation. Finally,…
Two examples, not connected at present, from author's papers (Nuovo Cim., 1992, v.105A, p.77 [hep-th/0207210] and GRG, 1999, v.31, p.1431 [gr-qc/0207017]) are considered here in which a physical model has discrete symmetries and additional non-observable coordinates or parameters. Then it is possible to introduce some apparent continuous symmetries of the model for an observer which cannot know values of these additional quantities.
The dissertation presents possibilities of applying noncommutative spacetimes description, particularly kappa-deformed Minkowski spacetime and Drinfeld's deformation theory, as a mathematical formalism for Doubly Special Relativity theories (DSR), which are thought as phenomenological limit of quantum gravity theory. Deformed relativistic symmetries are described within Hopf algebra language. In the case of (quantum) kappa-Minkowski spacetime the symmetry group is described by the (quantum) kappa-Poincare Hopf algebra. Deformed relativistic symmetries were used to construct the DSR algebra, wh…
We develop a mathematical theory of symmetry protected trivial (SPT) orders and anomaly-free symmetry enriched topological (SET) orders in all dimensions via two different approaches with an emphasis on the second approach. The first approach is to gauge the symmetry in the same dimension by adding topological excitations as it was done in the 2d case, in which the gauging process is mathematically described by the minimal modular extensions of unitary braided fusion 1-categories. This 2d result immediately generalizes to all dimensions except in 1d, which is treated with special care. The sec…
Symmetries and adjoint-symmetries are two fundamental (coordinate-free) structures of PDE systems. Recent work has developed several new algebraic aspects of adjoint-symmetries: three fundamental actions of symmetries on adjoint-symmetries; a Lie bracket on the set of adjoint-symmetries given by the range of a symmetry action; a generalized Noether (pre-symplectic) operator constructed from any non-variational adjoint-symmetry. These results are illustrated here by considering five examples of physically interesting nonlinear PDE systems -- nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations, Navier-Stokes…
A geometrical formulation for adjoint-symmetries as 1-forms is studied for general partial differential equations (PDEs), which provides a dual counterpart of the geometrical meaning of symmetries as tangent vector fields on the solution space of a PDE. Two applications of this formulation are presented. Additionally, for systems of evolution equations, adjoint-symmetries are shown to have another geometrical formulation given by 1-forms that are invariant under the flow generated by the system on the solution space. This result is generalized to systems of evolution equations with spatial con…
We consider a system of partial differential equations, of interest to plasma physics, and provide all its Lie point symmetries, with their respective invariant solutions. We also discuss some of its conditional and partial symmetries. We finally show that, although the system can be cast in divergence form and admits conserved currents, it does not admit potential symmetries.
Contemporary presentation of the version 1 demonstrates briefly the development of our investigations and our future goals. The improved free of difficulties in interpretation and printing errors version is presented. The 256-dimensional gamma matrix representations of the Clifford algebra and corresponding representations of SO(10) and SO(1,9) algebras over the field of real numbers are introduced. This turned out to be possible in the space of eight-component spinors, and not for the ordinary four-component Dirac spinors. The proposed mathematical objects allow the generalization of our resu…
Using the theory of $1+1$ hyperbolic systems we put in perspective the mathematical and geometrical structure of the celebrated circularly polarized waves solutions for isotropic hyperelastic materials determined by Carroll in Acta Mechanica 3 (1967) 167--181. We show that a natural generalization of this class of solutions yields an infinite family of \emph{linear} solutions for the equations of isotropic elastodynamics. Moreover, we determine a huge class of hyperbolic partial differential equations having the same property of the shear wave system. Restricting the attention to the usual fir…
We focus on symmetries related to matrices and vectors appearing in the simulation of quantum many-body systems. Spin Hamiltonians have special matrix-symmetry properties such as persymmetry. Furthermore, the systems may exhibit physical symmetries translating into symmetry properties of the eigenvectors of interest. Both types of symmetry can be exploited in sparse representation formats such as Matrix Product States (MPS) for the desired eigenvectors. This paper summarizes symmetries of Hamiltonians for typical physical systems such as the Ising model and lists resulting properties of the re…
This paper presents recent work on connections between symmetries and conservation laws. After reviewing Noether's theorem and its limitations, we present the Direct Construction Method to show how to find directly the conservation laws for any given system of differential equations. This method yields the multipliers for conservation laws as well as an integral formula for corresponding conserved densities. The action of a symmetry (discrete or continuous) on a conservation law yields conservation laws. Conservation laws yield non-locally related systems that, in turn, can yield nonlocal symm…
We review the major mathematical concepts involved in the dimensional reduction of D=11 N=1 supergravity theory over a Calabi-Yau manifold with non-trivial complex structure moduli resulting in ungauged D=5 N=2 supergravity theory with hypermultiplets. This last has a particularly rich structure with many underlying geometries. We reproduce the entire calculation and particularly emphasize its symplectic symmetry and how that arises from the topology of the underlying subspace. The review is intended to fill in a specific gap in the literature with the hope that it would be useful to both the …
One considers a special class of PDEs systems and one determines the associated symmetry group. Particulary, for the Blair system, one finds the symmetry group. A solutions of the Blair system gives a conformally flat contact metric structure and also it defines a "force-free" model of solar physics. By using the symmetry groups theory, one shows that the known solutions are group-invariant solutions and one gives new solutions.
The result from developing and applying the notions of functional self-similarity and the Bogoliubov renormalization group to boundary-value problems in mathematical physics during the last decade are reviewed. The main achievement is the regular algorithm for finding renormalization group-type symmetries using the contemporary theory of Lie groups of transformations.
A procedure for obtaining a "minimal" discretization of a partial differential equation, preserving all of its Lie point symmetries is presented. "Minimal" in this case means that the differential equation is replaced by a partial difference scheme involving N difference equations, where N is the number of independent and dependent variable. We restrict to one scalar function of two independent variables. As examples, invariant discretizations of the heat, Burgers and Korteweg-de Vries equations are presented. Some exact solutions of the discrete schemes are obtained.
Inspired from Lie symmetry classification, we establish a correspondence between rank two Lie symmetries and 2D material physics. The material unit cell is accordingly interpreted as the geometry of a root system. The hexagonal cells, appearing in graphene like models, are analyzed in some details and are found to be associated with A_2 and G_2 Lie symmetries. This approach can be applied to Lie supersymmetries associated with fermionic degrees of freedom. It has been suggested that these extended symmetries can offer a new way to deal with doping material geometries. Motivated by Lie symmetry…
I construct lowest-energy representations of non-centrally extended algebras of Noether symmetries, including diffeomorphisms and reparametrizations of the observer's trajectory. This may be viewed as a new scheme for quantization. First classical physics is formulated as the cohomology of a certain Koszul-Tate (KT) complex, using not only fields and antifields but also their conjugate momenta. Then all fields are expanded in a Taylor series around the observer's present position, and terms of order higher than p are truncated. Finally, quantization is carried out by replacing Poisson brackets…
This article reviews the role of hidden symmetries of dynamics in the study of physical systems, from the basic concepts of symmetries in phase space to the forefront of current research. Such symmetries emerge naturally in the description of physical systems as varied as non-relativistic, relativistic, with or without gravity, classical or quantum, and are related to the existence of conserved quantities of the dynamics and integrability. In recent years their study has grown intensively, due to the discovery of non-trivial examples that apply to different types of theories and different numb…
These are introductory notes on symmetries in quantum field theory and how they apply to particle physics. The notes cover the fundamentals of group theory, their representations, Lie groups, and Lie algebras, along with an elaborate discussion of the representations of SU(N), Lorentz, and Poincare groups and their respective algebras. We spend a lot of time on the realisation of these symmetry groups in quantum field theory, as both global and gauge symmetries, as well as their spontaneous breaking and the Higgs mechanism. In the end, we culminate all the lessons from the course to enumerate …
Recently there has been considerable interest in the properties of carbon nanotori. Such nanotori can be parametrized according to their radii, their chiralities, and the twists that occur upon joining opposite ends of the nanotubes from which they are derived. In this paper, however, we demonstrate that many physically distinct nanotori with wildly different parameters nevertheless share identical band structures, energy spectra, and electrical conductivities. This occurs as a result of certain geometric symmetries known as modular symmetries which are direct consequences of the properties of…
Van Holten's covariant algorithm for deriving conserved quantities is presented, with particular attention paid to Runge-Lenz-type vectors. The classical dynamics of isospin-carrying particles is reviewed. Physical applications including non-Abelian monopole-type systems in diatoms, introduced by Moody, Shapere and Wilczek, are considered. Applied to curved space, the formalism of van Holten allows us to describe the dynamical symmetries of generalized Kaluza-Klein monopoles. The framework is extended to supersymmetry and applied to the SUSY of the monopoles. Yet another application concerns t…
This introductory survey deals with mathematical and physical properties of discrete structures such as point sets and tilings. The emphasis is on proper generalizations of concepts and ideas from classical crystallography. In particular, we focus on their interplay with various physically motivated equivalence concepts such as local indistinguishability and local equivalence. Various discrete patterns with non-crystallographic symmetries are described in detail, and some of their magic properties are introduced. This perfectly ordered world is augmented by a brief introduction to the stochast…
The goal of this introduction to symmetries is to present some general ideas, to outline the fundamental concepts and results of the subject and to situate a bit the following lectures of this school. [These notes represent the write-up of a lecture presented at the fifth ``Seminaire Rhodanien de Physique: Sur les Symetries en Physique" held at Dolomieu (France), 17-21 March 1997. Up to the appendix and the graphics, it is to be published in "Symmetries in Physics", F.Gieres, M.Kibler,C.Lucchesi and O.Piguet, eds. (Editions Frontieres, 1998).]
In this paper we describe how to implement symmetries on a canonical noncommutative spacetime. We focus on noncommutative Lorentz transformations. We then discuss the structure of the light cone on a canonical noncommutative spacetime and show that field theories formulated on these spaces do not violate mircocausality.
In this thesis, we study the one parameter point transformations which leave invariant the differential equations. In particular we study the Lie and the Noether point symmetries of second order differential equations. We establish a new geometric method which relates the point symmetries of the differential equations with the collineations of the underlying manifold where the motion occurs. This geometric method is applied in order the two and three dimensional Newtonian dynamical systems to be classified in relation to the point symmetries; to generalize the Newtonian Kepler-Ermakov system i…

Quantum algebras (also called quantum groups) are deformed versions of the usual Lie algebras, to which they reduce when the deformation parameter q is set equal to unity. From the mathematical point of view they are Hopf algebras. Their use in physics became popular with the introduction of the q-deformed harmonic oscillator as a tool for providing a boson realization of the quantum algebra SUq(2), although similar mathematical structures had already been known. Initially used for solving the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, quantum algebras have subsequently found applications in several branch…
Topological phases are enriched in non-equilibrium open systems effectively described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. While several properties unique to non-Hermitian topological systems were uncovered, the fundamental role of symmetry in non-Hermitian physics has yet to be fully understood, and it has remained unclear how symmetry protects non-Hermitian topological phases. Here we show that two fundamental anti-unitary symmetries, time-reversal and particle-hole symmetries, are topologically equivalent in the complex energy plane and hence unified in non-Hermitian physics. A striking consequen…
