I construct lowest-energy representations of non-centrally extended algebras of Noether symmetries, including diffeomorphisms and reparametrizations of the observer's trajectory. This may be viewed as a new scheme for quantization. First classical physics is formulated as the cohomology of a certain Koszul-Tate (KT) complex, using not only fields and antifields but also their conjugate momenta. Then all fields are expanded in a Taylor series around the observer's present position, and terms of order higher than p are truncated. Finally, quantization is carried out by replacing Poisson brackets by commutators and imposing the KT cohomology in Fock space. This procedure is consistent for finite p, but the limit p\to\infty leads to difficulties.
In this paper we give a complete classification of spherically symmetric static space-times by their Noether symmetries. The determining equations for Noether symmetries are obtained by using the usual Lagrangian of a general spherically symmetric static spacetime which are integrated for each case. In particular we observe that spherically symmetric static spacetimes are categorized into six distinct classes corresponding to Noether algebra of dimensions 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17. Using Noether`s theorem we also write down the first integrals for each class of such spacetimes corresponding to the…
A detailed study of the modified gravity, f(R) models is performed, using that the Noether point symmetries of these models are geometric symmetries of the mini superspace of the theory. It is shown that the requirement that the field equations admit Noether point symmetries selects definite models in a self-consistent way. As an application in Cosmology we consider the Friedman -Robertson-Walker spacetime and show that the only cosmological model which is integrable via Noether point symmetries is the $(R^{b}-2Λ) ^{c}$ model, which generalizes the Lambda Cosmology. Furthermore using the corre…
We review the {\it Noether Symmetry Approach} as a geometric criterion to select theories of gravity. Specifically, we deal with Noether Symmetries to solve the field equations of given gravity theories. The method allows to find out exact solutions, but also to constrain arbitrary functions in the action. Specific cosmological models are taken into account.
We discuss the relationship between the Noether point symmetries of the geodesic Lagrangian, in a (pseudo)Riemannian manifold, with the elements of the Homothetic algebra of the space. We observe that the classification problem of the Noether symmetries for the geodesic Lagrangian is equivalent with the classification of the Homothetic algebra of the space, which in the case of a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker spacetime is a well-known result in the literature.
We consider a general theory of all possible quadratic, first-order derivative terms of the non-metricity tensor in the framework of Symmetric Teleparallel Geometry. We apply the Noether Symmetry Approach to classify those models that are invariant under point transformations in a cosmological background and we use the symmetries of these models to reduce the dynamics of the system in order to find analytical solutions.
We classify a class of Bianchi type II spacetimes according to their Noether symmetries. We briefly discuss the conservation laws admitted by these Noether symmetries and classify their possible algebras and determine their structures also.
We derive the Lie and the Noether conditions for the equations of motion of a dynamical system in a $n-$dimensional Riemannian space. We solve these conditions in the sense that we express the symmetry generating vectors in terms of the special projective and the homothetic vectors of the space. Therefore the Lie and the Noether symmetries for these equations are geometric symmetries or, equivalently, the geometry of the space is modulating the motion of dynamical systems in that space. We give two theorems which contain all the necessary conditions which allow one to determine the Lie and the…
We find the Noether point symmetries for non-relativistic two-dimensional charged particle motion. These symmetries are composed of a quasi-invariance transformation, a time-dependent rotation and a time-dependent spatial translation. The associated electromagnetic field satisfy a system of first-order linear partial differential equations. This system is solved exactly, yielding three classes of electromagnetic fields compatible with Noether point symmetries. The corresponding Noether invariants are derived and interpreted.
In the present paper geometric aspects of relationship between non-Noether symmetries and conservation laws in Hamiltonian systems is discussed. It is shown that integrals of motion associated with continuous non-Noether symmetry are in involution whenever generator of the symmetry satisfies certain Yang-Baxter equation.
Teleparallel Horndeski theory offers an avenue through which to circumvent the speed constraint of gravitational waves in an efficient manner. However, this provides an even larger plethora of models due to the increase in action terms. In this work we explore these models in the context of cosmological systems. Using Noether point symmetries, we classify the dynamical systems that emerge from Teleparallel Horndeski cosmologies. This approach is very effective at selecting specific models in the general class of second-order Teleparallel scalar-tensor theories, as well as for deriving exact so…
Regular perturbative Lagrangians that admit approximate Noether symmetries and approximate conservation laws are studied. Specifically, we investigate the connection between approximate Noether symmetries and collineations of the underlying manifold. In particular we determine the generic Noether symmetry conditions for the approximate point symmetries and we find that for a class of perturbed Lagrangians, Noether symmetries are related to the elements of the Homothetic algebra of the metric which is defined by the unperturbed Lagrangian. Moreover, we discuss how exact symmetries become approx…
For a dynamical system defined by a singular Lagrangian, canonical Noether symmetries are characterized in terms of their commutation relations with the evolution operators of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. Separate characterizations are given in phase space, in velocity space, and through an evolution operator that links both spaces.
The Noether symmetry analysis is applied for the study of a multifield cosmological model in a spatially flat FLRW background geometry. The gravitational Action Integral consists of two scalar fields, the Brans-Dicke field and a second scalar field minimally coupled to gravity. However, the two scalar fields interact in the kinetic terms. This multifield has been found to describe the equivalent of hyperbolic inflation in the Jordan frame. The application of Noether's theorems constrain the free parameters of the model that conservation laws exist. We find that the field equations form an inte…
It is shown that the Clebsch parameterization, upon canonizing the Hamiltonian system of ideal fluid or plasma dynamics, converts the Casimir invariants (mass and helicities) in the original noncanonical formulation into the Noether charges pertinent to the gauge symmetries of the parameterization. The problem is addressed in the context of magnetohydrodynamics. The concrete forms of the gauge symmetries of Clebsch parameterization are worked out.
We develop the general theory of Noether symmetries for constrained systems. In our derivation, the Dirac bracket structure with respect to the primary constraints appears naturally and plays an important role in the characterization of the conserved quantities associated to these Noether symmetries. The issue of projectability of these symmetries from tangent space to phase space is fully analyzed, and we give a geometrical interpretation of the projectability conditions in terms of a relation between the Noether conserved quantity in tangent space and the presymplectic form defined on it. We…
We prove two theorems which relate the Lie point symmetries and the Noether symmetries of a dynamical system moving in a Riemannian space with the special projective group and the homothetic group of the space respectively. The theorems are applied to classify the two dimensional Newtonian dynamical systems, which admit a Lie point/Noether symmetry. Two cases are considered, the non-conservative and the conservative forces. The use of the results is demonstrated for the Kepler - Ermakov system, which in general is non-conservative and for potentials similar to the Hènon Heiles potential. Final…
The investigation of approximate symmetries of reparametrization invariant Lagrangians of n + 1 degrees of freedom and quadratic velocities is presented. We show that extra conditions emerge which give rise to approximate and conditional Noether symmetries of such constrained actions. The Noether symmetries are the simultaneous conformal Killing vectors of both the kinetic metric and the potential. In order to recover these conditional symmetry generators which would otherwise be lost in gauge fixing the lapse function entering the perturbative Lagrangian, one must consider the lapse among the…
We prove two general theorems which determine the Lie and the Noether point symmetries for the equations of motion of a dynamical system which moves in a general Riemannian space under the action of a time dependent potential $W(t,x)=ω(t)V(x)$. We apply the theorems to the case of a time dependent central potential and the harmonic oscillator and determine all Lie and Noether point symmetries. Finally we prove that these theorems also apply to the case of a dynamical system with linear dumping and study two examples.
This paper is devoted to studying symmetries of certain kinds of k-cosymplectic Hamiltonian systems in first-order classical field theories. Thus, we introduce a particular class of symmetries and study the problem of associating conservation laws to them by means of a suitable generalization of Noether's theorem.
Noether theorem establishes an interesting connection between symmetries of the action integral and conservation laws of a dynamical system. The aim of the present work is to classify the damped harmonic oscillator problem with respect to Noether symmetries and to construct corresponding conservation laws for all over-damped, under damped and critical damped cases. For each case we obtain maximum five linearly independent group generators which provide related five conserved quantities. Remarkably, after obtaining complete set of invariant quantities we obtain analytical solutions for each cas…
We give a version of Noether theorem adapted to the framework of mu-symmetries; this extends to such case recent work by Muriel, Romero and Olver in the framework of lambda-symmetries, and connects mu-symmetries of a Lagrangian to a suitably modified conservation law. In some cases this "mu-conservation law'' actually reduces to a standard one; we also note a relation between mu-symmetries and conditional invariants. We also consider the case where the variational principle is itself formulated as requiring vanishing variation under mu-prolonged variation fields, leading to modified Euler-Lagr…
We consider Noether symmetries within Hamiltonian setting as transformations that preserve Poincaré-Cartan form, i.e., as symmetries of characteristic line bundles of nondegenerate 1-forms. In the case when the Poincaré-Cartan form is contact, the explicit expression for the symmetries in the inverse Noether theorem is given. As examples, we consider natural mechanical systems, in particular the Kepler problem. Finally, we prove a variant of the theorem on complete (non-commutative) integrability in terms of Noether symmetries of time-dependent Hamiltonian systems.
The first part of this paper develops a geometric setting for differential-difference equations that resolves an open question about the extent to which continuous symmetries can depend on discrete independent variables. For general mappings, differentiation and differencing fail to commute. We prove that there is no such failure for structure-preserving mappings, and identify a class of equations that allow greater freedom than is typical. For variational symmetries, the above results lead to a simple proof of the differential-difference version of Noether's Theorem. We state and prove the di…
We show that all Lie point symmetries of various classes of nonlinear differential equations involving critical nonlinearities are variational/divergence symmetries.
We carried out the detailed group classification of the potential in Klein-Gordon equation in anisotropic Riemannian manifolds. Specifically, we consider the Klein-Gordon equations for the four-dimensional anisotropic and homogeneous spacetimes of Bianchi I, Bianchi\ III and Bianchi V. We derive all the closed-form expressions for the potential function where the equation admits Lie and Noether symmetries. We apply previous results which connect the Lie symmetries\ of the differential equation with the collineations of the Riemannian space which defines the Laplace operator, and we solve the c…
We determine the autonomous three dimensional Newtonian systems which admit Lie point symmetries and the three dimensional autonomous Newtonian Hamiltonian systems, which admit Noether point symmetries. We apply the results in order to determine the two dimensional Hamiltonian dynamical systems which move in a space of constant non-vanishing curvature and are integrable via Noether point symmetries. The derivation of the results is geometric and can be extended naturally to higher dimensions.
We study differential systems for which it is possible to establish a correspondence between symmetries and conservation laws based on Noether identity: quasi-Noether systems. We analyze Noether identity and show that it leads to the same conservation laws as Lagrange (Green-Lagrange) identity. We discuss quasi-Noether systems, and some of their properties, and generate classes of quasi-Noether differential equations of the second order. We next introduce a more general version of quasi-Lagrangians which allows us to extend Noether theorem. Here, variational symmetries are only sub-symmetries,…
The aim of this paper is to present a new approach to construct constants of motion associated with scaling symmetries of dynamical systems. Scaling maps could be symmetries of the equations of motion but not of its associated Lagrangian action. We have constructed a Noether inspired theorem in a vertical extended space that can be used to obtain constants of motion for these symmetries. Noether theorem can be obtained as a particular case of our construction. To illustrate how the procedure works, we present two interesting examples, a) the Schwarzian Mechanics based on Schwarzian derivative …
We show that generalized symmetries cannot be charged under a continuous global symmetry having a Noether current. Further, only non-compact generalized symmetries can be charged under a continuous global symmetry. These results follow from a finer classification of twist operators, which naturally extends to finite group global symmetries. They unravel topological obstructions to the strong version of Noether's theorem in QFT, even if under general conditions a global symmetry can be implemented locally by twist operators (weak version). We use these results to rederive Weinberg-Witten's theo…
A procedure which obviates the constraint imposed by the conflict between consistent quantization and the invariance of the Hamiltonian description under nonlinear canonical transformation is proposed. This new quantization scheme preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schrödinger's equation. As an example, the quantization of the `goldfish' many-body problem extensively studied by Calogero et al. is presented.
We present Noether's second theorem for graded Lagrangian systems of even and odd variables on an arbitrary body manifold X in a general case of BRST symmetries depending on derivatives of dynamic variables and ghosts of any finite order. As a preliminary step, Noether's second theorem for Lagrangian systems on fiber bundles over X possessing gauge symmetries depending on derivatives of dynamic variables and parameters of arbitrary order is proved.
We show that Belinfante construction of an improved energy-momentum tensor can be carried over to curved backgrounds, in analogy to the case of flat spacetime. The results hold irrespective of the background being dynamical or a fixed, non-backreacting one. It turns out that the analogous would-be canonical energy-momentum tensor is not covariantly conserved in general, but its Belinfante "improvement" is. We relate this last tensor with the Hilbert tensor obtained by functionally derivating the Lagrangian with respect to the metric. When the background in non-dynamical, we discuss some issues…
We prove a theorem concerning the Noether symmetries for the area minimizing Lagrangian under the constraint of a constant volume in an n-dimensional Riemannian space. We illustrate the application of the theorem by a number of examples.
It's well known that Noether symmetries lead to the conservation laws. Conserved quantities are constructed out of generator of the symmetry - invariant Hamiltonian vector field. Considering more general class of vector fields - non-Hamiltonian ones leads to the notion of non-Noether symmetry and conservation laws (Lutzky's integrals of motion) with interesting properties. In the present paper correspondence between non-Noether symmetries and conserved quantities in different types of dynamical systems (DS on symplectic, presymplectic and Poisson manifolds) is considered.
In the present paper the non-Noether symmetries of the Toda model, nonlinear Schodinger equation and Korteweg-de Vries equations (KdV and mKdV) are discussed. It appears that these symmetries yield the complete sets of conservation laws in involution and lead to the bi-Hamiltonian realizations of the above mentioned models.
We discuss the relation between Noether (point) symmetries and discrete symmetries for a class of minisuperspace cosmological models. We show that when a Noether symmetry exists for the gravitational Lagrangian then there exists a coordinate system in which a reversal symmetry exists. Moreover as far as concerns the scale-factor duality symmetry of the dilaton field, we show that it is related to the existence of a Noether symmetry for the field equations, and the reversal symmetry in the normal coordinates of the symmetry vector becomes scale-factor duality symmetry in the original coordinate…
In the past few years both non-Noether symmetries and bidifferential calculi has been successfully used in generating conservation laws and both lead to the similar families of conserved quantities. Here relationship between Lutzky's integrals of motion [3-4] and bidifferential calculi is briefly disscussed.
We discuss geometric properties of non-Noether symmetries and their possible applications in integrable Hamiltonian systems. Correspondence between non-Noether symmetries and conservation laws is revisited. It is shown that in regular Hamiltonian systems such a symmetries canonically lead to a Lax pairs on the algebra of linear operators on cotangent bundle over the phase space. Relationship between the non-Noether symmetries and other wide spread geometric methods of generating conservation laws such as bi-Hamiltonian formalism, bidifferential calculi and Frolicher-Nijenhuis geometry is consi…
We study the Lie and Noether point symmetries of a class of systems of second-order differential equations with $n$ independent and $m$ dependent variables ($n\times m$ systems). We solve the symmetry conditions in a geometric way and determine the general form of the symmetry vector and of the Noetherian conservation laws. We prove that the point symmetries are generated by the collineations of two (pseudo)metrics, which are defined in the spaces of independent and dependent variables. We demonstrate the general results in two special cases (a) a system of $m$ coupled Laplace equations and (b…
A general approach is presented for quantizing a metric nonlinear system on a manifold of constant curvature. It makes use of a curvature dependent procedure which relies on determining Noether symmetries from the metric. The curvature of the space functions as a constant parameter. For a specific metric which defines the manifold, Lie differentiation of the metric gives these symmetries. A metric is used such that the resulting Schrodinger equation can be solved in terms of hypergeometric functions. This permits the investigation of both the energy spectrum and wave functions exactly for this…
In the framework of classical field theory, we first review the Noether theory of symmetries, with simple rederivations of its essential results, with special emphasis given to the Noether identities for gauge theories. Will this baggage on board, we next discuss in detail, for Poincaré invariant theories in flat spacetime, the differences between the Belinfante energy-momentum tensor and a family of Hilbert energy-momentum tensors. All these tensors coincide on shell but they split their duties in the following sense: Belinfante's tensor is the one to use in order to obtain the generators of …
We perform a classification of the Lie and Noether point symmetries for the Klein-Gordon and for the wave equation in pp-wave spacetimes. To perform this analysis we reduce the problem of the determination of the point symmetries to the problem of existence of conformal killing vectors on the pp-wave spacetimes. We use the existing results of the literature for the isometry classes of the pp-wave spacetimes and we determine in each class the functional form of the potential in which the Klein-Gordon equation admits point symmetries and Noetherian conservation law. Finally we derive the point s…
We consider Noether symmetries of the equations defined by the sections of characteristic line bundles of nondegenerate 1-forms and of the associated perturbed systems. It appears that this framework can be used for time-dependent systems with constraints and nonconservative forces, allowing a quite simple and transparent formulation of the momentum equation and the Noether theorem in their general forms.
We disscuss some geometric aspects of the concept of non-Noether symmetry. It is shown that in regular Hamiltonian systems such a symmetry canonically leads to a Lax pair on the algebra of linear operators on cotangent bundle over the phase space. Correspondence between the non-Noether symmetries and other wide spread geometric methods of generating conservation laws such as bi-Hamiltonian formalism, bidifferential calculi and Frolicher-Nijenhuis geometry is considered. It is proved that the integrals of motion associated with the continuous non-Noether symmetry are in involution whenever the …
We prove that, given a time-independent Lagrangian defined in the first tangent bundle of configuration space, every infinitesimal Noether symmetry that is defined in the $n$-tangent bundle and is not vanishing on-shell, can be written as a canonical symmetry in an enlarged phase space, up to constraints that vanish on-shell. The proof is performed by the implementation of a change of variables from the the $n$-tangent bundle of the Lagrangian theory to an extension of the Hamiltonian formalism which is particularly suited for the case when the Lagrangian is singular. This result proves the as…
The classical quantization of a Lienard-type nonlinear oscillator is achieved by a quantization scheme (M.C. Nucci. Theor. Math. Phys., 168:997--1004, 2011) that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schrödinger equation. This method straightforwardly yields the correct Schrödinger equation in the momentum space (V. Chithiika Ruby, M. Senthilvelan, and M. Lakshmanan. J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 45:382002, 2012), and sheds light into the apparently remarkable connection with the linear harmonic oscillator.
The purpose of the current article is to present a brief albeit accurate presentation of the main tools used in the study of symmetries of Lagrange equations for holonomic systems and subsequently to show how these tools are applied in the major models of modern cosmology in order to derive exact solutions and deal with the problem of dark matter/energy. The key role in this approach are the first integrals of the field equations. We start with the Lie point symmetries and the first integrals defined by them, that is the Hojman integrals. Subsequently we discuss the Noether point symmetries an…
A theorem is proved which determines the first integrals of the form $I=K_{ab}(t,q)\dot{q}^{a}\dot{q}^{b}+K_{a}(t,q)\dot{q}^{a}+K(t,q)$ of autonomous holonomic systems using only the collineations of the kinetic metric which is defined by the kinetic energy or the Lagrangian of the system. It is shown how these first integrals can be associated via the inverse Noether theorem to a gauged weak Noether symmetry which admits the given first integral as a Noether integral. It is shown also that the associated Noether symmetry is possible to satisfy the conditions for a Hojman or a form-invariance …
The connection between symmetries and conservation laws as made by Noether's theorem is extended to the context of causal variational principles and causal fermion systems. Different notions of continuous symmetries are introduced. It is proven that these symmetries give rise to corresponding conserved quantities, expressed in terms of so-called surface layer integrals. In a suitable limiting case, the Noether-like theorems for causal fermion systems reproduce charge conservation and the conservation of energy and momentum in Minkowski space. Thus the conservation of charge and energy-momentum…
The paper is devoted to hyperbolic (generally speaking, non-Lagrangian and nonlinear) partial differential systems possessing a full set of differential operators that map any function of one independent variable into a symmetry of the corresponding system. We demonstrate that a system has the above property if and only if this system admits a full set of formal integrals (i.e., differential operators which map symmetries into integrals of the system). As a consequence, such systems possess both direct and inverse Noether operators (in the terminology of a work by B. Fuchssteiner and A.S. Foka…
We review the geometric formulation of the second Noether's theorem in time-dependent mechanics. The commutation relations between the dynamics on the final constraint manifold and the infinitesimal generator of a symmetry are studied. We show an algorithm for determining a gauge symmetry which is closely related to the process of stabilization of constraints, both in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. The connections between both formalisms are established by means of the time-evolution operator.
We show that a Minkowski phase space endowed with a bracket relatively to a conformable differential realizes a Poisson algebra, confering a bi-Hamiltonian structure to the resulting manifold. We infer that the related Hamiltonian vector field is an infinitesimal Noether symmetry, and compute the corresponding deformed recursion operator. Besides, using the Hamiltonian-Jacobi separability, we construct recursion operators for Hamiltonian vector fields in conformable Poisson-Schwarzschild and Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) manifolds, and derive related constants of motion, Christoff…
The classical quantization of a family of a quadratic Liénard-type equation (Liénard II equation) is achieved by a quantization scheme (M.~C. Nucci. {\em Theor. Math. Phys.}, 168:994--1001, 2011) that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schrödinger equation. This method straightforwardly yields the Schrödinger equation as given in (A.~Ghose~Choudhury and Partha Guha. {\em J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.}, 46:165202, 2013).
This paper provides a modern presentation of Noether's theory in the realm of classical dynamics, with application to the problem of a particle submitted to both a potential and a linear dissipation. After a review of the close relationships between Noether symmetries and first integrals, we investigate the variational point symmetries of the Lagrangian introduced by Bateman, Caldirola and Kanai. This analysis leads to the determination of all the time-independent potentials allowing such symmetries, in the one-dimensional and the radial cases. Then we develop a symmetry-based transformation o…
A class of generalized Galileon cosmological models, which can be described by a point-like Lagrangian, is considered in order to utilize Noether's Theorem to determine conservation laws for the field equations. In the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe, the existence of a nontrivial conservation law indicates the integrability of the field equations. Due to the complexity of the latter, we apply the differential invariants approach in order to construct special power-law solutions and study their stability.
The classical quantization of the motion of a free particle and that of an harmonic oscillator on a double cone are achieved by a quantization scheme [M.C. Nucci, Theor. Math. Phys. 168 (2011) 994], that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schroedinger equation. The result is different from that given in [K. Kowalski, J.Rembielnski, Ann. Phys. 329 (2013) 146]. A comparison of the different outcomes is provided.
