We study the electromagnetic force exerted on a pair of parallel slab waveguides by the light propagating through them. We have calculated the dependence of the force on the slab separation by means of the Maxwell--Stress tensor formalism and we have discussed its main features for the different propagation modes: spatially symmetric (antisymmetric) modes give rise to an attractive (repulsive) interaction. We have derived the asymptotic behaviors of the force at small and large separation and we have quantitatively estimated the mechanical deflection induced on a realistic air-bridge structure.
We analyze wave propagation in coupled planar waveguides, pointing specific attention to modal cross-talk and out-of-plane scattering in quasi-planar photonics. An algorithm capable of accurate numerical computation of wave coupling in arrays of planar structures is developed and illustrated on several examples of plasmonic and volumetric waveguides. An analytical approach to reduce or completely eliminate scattering and modal cross-talk in planar waveguides with anisotropic materials is also presented.
Planar dielectric subwavelength waveguides are proposed as waveguides for THz radiation. The waveguide porous design maximizes the fraction of power guided in the air to avoid the complexity that all the materials are highly absorbent in the THz region. Convenient access to the mode region makes them also useful for sensing of biological and chemical specimens in the THz region.
In this letter, the leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) is extended into characterization of planar waveguide modes (WMs) rather than surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) taking advantages of the coupling between WMs and fluorescence emission. Propagation constants of different WMs allowed in the same planar waveguide can be simultaneously and rapidly derived from the Fourier plane image of fluorescence based LRM. Numerical simulations are also carried out to calculate propagation constants of these modes, which are consistent with experimental results. Our experiments provide a simple but high ef…
Radiative emission from an open-ended unflanged planar dielectric waveguide is studied for the case of TM polarization on the basis of an iterative scheme. The first step of the scheme leads to approximate values for the reflection coefficients and electromagnetic fields inside and outside the waveguide. It is shown that for the related problems of reflection from a step potential in one-dimensional quantum mechanics and of Fresnel reflection of an electromagnetic plane wave from a half-space the iterative scheme is in accordance with the exact solution.
Utilizing the underlying physics of evanescent wave amplification by a negative-refractive-index slab, it is shown that evanescent waves with specific spatial frequencies can also be amplified without any reflection simply by two dielectric planar waveguides. The simple configuration allows one to take advantage of the high resolution limit of a high-refractive-index material without contact with the object.
We develop an analytical approach based on the Rytov-Leontovich boundary conditions to study light field modes in the nano planar waveguides. The analytical results thus obtained demonstrate new conditions for optical low loss surface plasmon-polariton modes in the planar waveguides with dielectric-metamaterial interfaces. The obtained results are confirmed with existing numerical calcultions. More general conditions for using the proposed analytical approach to study light field in the nano waveguides are also considered.
In this paper, we analyze spontaneous parametric down conversion in a 2D slant strip type periodically poled planar waveguide and show that such a configuration has efficiencies higher than in the case of bulk crystals with the possibility of ease of collection like in channel waveguides with the additional feature of wavelength tunability. The proposed design should find applications in quantum processing using integrated quantum optics.
Experimental evidence of mode-selective evanescent power coupling at telecommunication frequencies with efficiencies up to 75 % from a tapered optical fiber to a carefully designed metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide is presented. The waveguide consists of a two-dimensional square lattice of lithographically defined Au nanoparticles on an optically thin silicon membrane. The dispersion and attenuation properties of the waveguide are analyzed using the fiber taper. The high efficiency of power transfer into these waveguides solves the coupling problem between conventional optics and plasmonic …
Dye-doped hybrid silicate/titanium nanofilms on the glass substrate in the structure of asymmetrical waveguides were studied as the laser system. The spatial and spectral features of laser oscillation of genuine and hollow waveguides were determined. Their lasing thresholds of a two-order difference of pumping power were identified. The calculated cutoff thickness for waveguides of 100 nm did not exceed their actual thickness of 300nm. The overall pattern of stimulated emission included two concurrent processes: one-mode waveguide lasing and the lateral beam emission of small divergence emanat…
The evolution of the transverse momentum of monochromatic light entering a multimode planar waveguide at large angle is investigated. We report on oscillations of the momentum caused by the beatings between the adjacent populated modes of the waveguide and their periodic collapses and revivals. A new type of an interferometer based on this effect with fringe spacing as small as 1/9 of a light wavelength is demonstrated experimentally and periods as small as 1/1000 of a light wavelength seem to be feasible.
The resonant state expansion, a recently developed method in electrodynamics, is generalized here to planar open optical systems with non-normal incidence of light. The method is illustrated and verified on exactly solvable examples, such as a dielectric slab and a Bragg reflector microcavity, for which explicit analytic formulas are developed. This comparison demonstrates the accuracy and convergence of the method. Interestingly, the spectral analysis of a dielectric slab in terms of resonant states reveals an influence of waveguide modes in the transmission. These modes, which on resonance d…
The forces acting on and the energies of solitons governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in finite, planar waveguides with periodic and with homogeneous Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions are determined by means of a quantum analogy. It is shown that these densities have S-shape profiles and increase as the hardness of the boundary conditions is increased.
Motivated by the recent progress in analog computing [Science 343, 160 (2014)], a new approach to perform spatial integration is presented using a dielectric slab waveguide. Our approach is indeed based on the fact that the transmission coefficient of a simple dielectric slab waveguide at its mode excitation angle matches the Green's function of first order integration. Inspired by the mentioned dielectric-based integrator, we further demonstrate its graphene-based counterpart. The latter is not only reconfigurable but also highly miniaturized in contrast to the previously reported designs [Op…
Conservation equations for the mass, linear momentum and energy densities of solitons propagating in finite, infinite and periodic, nonlinear, planar waveguides and governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are derived. These conservation equations are used to determine classical force densities which are compared with those derived by drawing a quantum mechanics analogy between the propagation of solitons and the motion of a quantum particle in a nonlinear potential well.
The paper considers the dynamics of nonlinear surface plasmon polariton waves in a planar plasmon waveguide, which is a heterostructure of non-magnetic metallic and dielectric layers. The obtained in the work nonlinear equations and their analytical solutions describe the vector cnoidal and solitary plasmon polariton waves excited by single electromagnetic pulse at the waveguide. Nonlinear plasmon polariton waves arise under the influence of the Kerr nonlinearity of metal and the saturation of nonlinearity at the heterostructure. The period and profile of envelope of the excited nonlinear surf…
The numerical complex coupled-mode method used in a metal thin-film optic element is applied to a planar multilayer optical waveguide. All modes are required to satisfy Helmholtz Vectorial equation in an optical waveguide including bound and leaky modes at forward and backward propagation directions. First-order perturbation theory is developed and applied by means of lossy materials including metal thin-film and perfectly matched layers at the boundaries. our suggested structure discontinues in one direction and gives rise to an asymmetric metal thin-film at the core for investigating the tra…
We present a one-port sensor based on a single diffraction grating delineated over a planar optical waveguide. Distinctly to previously reported devices, the grating here is used not only as I/O coupler, but also provides a built-in reference beam which is basically unaffected by the sensing process as manifested in changes of the effective refractive index of the waveguide. The sensing process causes two effects simultaneously: a change in the angle of the out-coupled beam and a change in the phase accumulated by that beam. Both changes can be determined by their conjunction with the referenc…
In recent years, extraordinary spin angular momenta have been investigated in a variety of structured electromagnetic waves, being of especial interest in sub-wavelength evanescent fields. Here we demonstrate analytically that, in planar and cylindrical waveguides supporting transverse electric/magnetic modes, transverse spin density arises inside the waveguide (different from the spin induced in the evanescent region outside the waveguide), carrying indeed longitudinal extraordinary (so-called) Belinfante's spin momentum. Such contribution depends linearly on the mode transverse wave vector, …
A metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide for electromagnetic energy transport utilizing dispersion engineering to dramatically increase lateral energy confinement via a two-dimensional pattern of Au dots on an optically thin Si membrane is described. Using finite-difference time-domain simulations and coupled-mode theory, we show that phase-matched evanescent excitation from conventional fiber tapers is possible with efficiencies > 90 % for realistic geometries. Energy loss in this waveguide is mainly due to material absorption, allowing for 1/e energy decay distances of about 2 mm for excitatio…
We stabilized the frequency of a compact planar-waveguide external cavity laser (ECL) on a Fabry-Pérot cavity (FPC) through a Pound-Drever-Hall scheme. The residual frequency stability of the ECL is 1E-14, comparable to the stability achievable with a fiber laser (FL) locked to a FPC through the same scheme. We set up an optical link of 100 km, based on fiber spools, that reaches 1E-19 relative stability, and we show that its performances using the ECL or FL are comparable. Thus ECLs could serve as an excellent replacement for FLs in optical links where cost-effectiveness and robustness are im…
The demonstration of an optical fiber based probe for efficiently exciting the waveguide modes of high-index contrast planar photonic crystal (PC) slabs is presented. Utilizing the dispersion of the PC, fiber taper waveguides formed from standard silica single-mode optical fibers are used to evanescently couple light into the guided modes of a patterned silicon membrane. A coupling efficiency of approximately 95% is obtained between the fiber taper and a PC waveguide mode suitably designed for integration with a previously studied ultra-small mode volume high-Q PC resonant cavity [1]. The micr…
We study the generation of biphoton modally entangled states in such waveguide structures that lead to spectrum broadening. The process of spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) has been considered for the biphoton generation. The main subject of our study is the dependence of the biphoton spectra on the structure spatial characteristics. The representation of the core structures as definite assembles of nonlinear layers allows us to find analytical description for biphoton spectrum. We show that chirped biphotons with discrete as well as continuous spectra can be generated depending on…
It is shown that optomechanical forces can cause nonlinear self-channelling of light in a planar dual-slab waveguide. A system of two parallel silica nanowebs, spaced ~100 nm and supported inside a fibre capillary, is studied theoretically and an iterative scheme developed to analyse its nonlinear optomechanical properties. Steady-state field distributions and mechanical deformation profiles are obtained, demonstrating that self-channelling is possible in realistic structures at launched powers as low as a few mW. The differential optical nonlinearity of the self-channelled mode can be as much…
We investigate optical (transverse gradient) forces between two high-index dielectric planar waveguides immersed in low-index dielectric fluid media. Complimentary to previous studies, we extend optical forces calculations, in order to take into account a non-vacuum (and non-air) background medium, by using the Minkowski stress tensor formulation; we derived a very simple set of equations in terms of the effective refractive indexes of the waveguide eigenmodes. We also used a normalized version of the dispersion relation method to calculate the optical forces, in order to validate our results …
Coupling of light into a thin layer of high refractive index material by plasmonic nanoparticles has been widely studied for application in photovoltaic devices, such as thin-film solar cells. In numerous studies this coupling has been investigated through measurement of e.g. quantum efficiency or photocurrent enhancement. Here we present a direct optical measurement of light coupling into a waveguide by plasmonic nanoparticles. We investigate the coupling efficiency into the guided modes within the waveguide by illuminating the surface of a sample, consisting of a glass slide coated with a hi…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber spectrum analyzer based on a planar waveguide chip butt-coupled with an input fiber and aligned to a standard camera without any free-space optical elements. The chip consists of a single-mode waveguide to connect with the fiber, a beam broadening area, and a waveguide array in which the lengths of the waveguides are designed for both wavelength separation and beam focusing. The facet of the chip is diced open so that the outputs of the array form a near-field emitter. The far field are calculated by the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral…
Radiative emission from a semi-infinite unflanged circular cylindrical dielectric waveguide or optical fiber is studied for the case of axisymmetric modes of TM polarization on the basis of an iterative scheme. The first step of the scheme leads to approximate values for the reflection coefficients and the electromagnetic fields inside and outside the waveguide. In a numerical example the reflection back into the waveguide is appreciable. Correspondingly the radiation pattern of the outgoing radiation differs appreciably from the lowest order approximation in which reflection is neglected.
Sheets of slab waveguides with sharp corners are investigated. By means of rigorous numerical experiments, we look at oblique incidence of semi-guided plane waves. Radiation losses vanish beyond a certain critical angle of incidence. One can thus realize lossless propagation through 90-degree corner configurations, where the remaining guided waves are still subject to pronounced reflection and polarization conversion. A system of two corners can be viewed as a structure akin to a Fabry-Perot-interferometer. By adjusting the distance between the two partial reflectors, here the 90-degree corner…
Dynamical parametric encirclement around an Exceptional Point (EP) and corresponding asymmetric state transfer phenomenon have attracted considerable attention recently. In this context, beyond the reported time-asymmetric state dynamics around a second-order EP (EP2) in a two-level system, the investigation of similar state dynamics around a third-order EP (EP3) in a multi-state system, having comparably complex topology with rich physics, is lacking. Here, we report a fabrication-feasible few-mode planar optical waveguide with a customized gain-loss profile and investigate the effect of dyna…
Recently it was suggested that Hawking radiation may be observed in a nonlinear electromagnetic waveguide upon propagation of an optical pulse. We show that the spectral characteristics of the Hawking effect in such a waveguide are indistinguishable from the well-known effect of frequency broadening of an optical pulse due to self-phase modulation. Furthermore, we derive an estimate on the critical optical power at which Hawking effect is dominated by the self-phase modulation. It appears that optical experiments reported so far are clearly dominated by self-phase modulation.
Chipscale microresonators with integrated planar optical waveguides are useful building blocks for linear, nonlinear and quantum optical devices. Loss reduction through improving fabrication processes has resulted in several integrated micro resonator platforms attaining quality (Q) factors of several millions. However only few studies have investigated design-dependent losses, especially with regard to the resonator coupling section. Here we investigate design-dependent parasitic losses, described by the coupling ideality, of the commonly employed microresonator design consisting of a microri…
We propose a scheme for the coupler-free excitation of surface polaritonic solitons and breathers in a planar plasmonic waveguide structure comprising of a transparent layer, a metal layer and a layer of three-level lambda-type atomic medium. In the proposed system, an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity is achieved via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the bottom atomic medium, which can be controlled through proper modulation of the frequency detunings and Rabi frequencies of the driving laser fields. This nonlinearity balances the dispersion in the system, thus providing the necessar…
A numerical study of the radiation in coupled bent waveguides is presented. Such arrangements of curved waveguides in reduced radiation-loss configurations can be used to enhance the quality factor of integrated micro-resonators. 3D full vector computations of the complex modal fields (and propagation constants) and the transient propagation effects have been performed. The results obtained agree qualitatively with former 2D FDTD analyses. At the same time, the calculations presented meet the accuracy requirements for the design of practical implementations that are unattainable with 2D approa…
Planar waveguides can limit the transmission of electromagnetic waves in a specific direction and have a wide range of applications in filters, sensors, and energy-transfer devices. However, given the increasing demand for planar integrated photonics, new waveguides are required with excellent characteristics such as more functionality, greater efficiency, and smaller size. In this work, we report the experimental results for a subwavelength planar microwave-regime waveguide fabricated from circuit-based magnetic hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) and develop the associated theory. HMM is a special…
We present two complementary models to study stationary nonlinear solutions in one-dimensional plasmonic slot waveguides made of a finite-thickness nonlinear dielectric core surrounded by metal regions. The considered nonlinearity is of focusing Kerr type. In the first model, it is assumed that the nonlinear term depends only on the transverse component of the electric field and that the nonlinear refractive index change is small compared to the linear part of the refractive index. This first model allows us to describe analytically the field profiles in the whole waveguide using Jacobi ellipt…
Following various works on second harmonic process using periodically poled Lithium Niobate crystals (PPLN), we report on the performances comparison between commercial bulk and waveguide crystals at 1029 nm. We use a continuous wave (CW) amplified Yb doped single fibre laser delivering up to 500mW in single mode regime. In case of bulk crystal we generate 4 mW using 400 mW IR power. The use of waveguide crystal leads to an increase of the harmonic power up to 33mW with input IR power limited to 200mW. Nevertheless, this impressive efficiency was affected by the long term degradation of the no…
We report a planar 1D photonic bandgap waveguide exhibiting four second-order exceptional points (EP2s). The interactions between the selective pairs of supported quasi-guided TE modes are modulated by spatial distribution of transverse in-homogeneous gain-loss profile.
We show that anisotropic planar anti-guiding waveguide structures with two radiation channels towards the surrounding cladding materials can support unidirectional guided resonances (UGRs), where radiation is cancelled in one of the radiation channels and redirected into the other. Their formation is subtle as it requires breaking the so-called polar anisotropy-symmetry of the structures. Then, UGRs appear at specific wavelengths and light propagation directions, are robust, and are characterised by phase singularities in the channel in which radiation is cancelled. The mechanism we describe a…
We explore exceptional points (EP) in a dual-mode symmetric planar optical waveguide with transverse variation of inhomogeneous loss profile; where modal evolution alongside an EP is reported in the context of selective optical mode conversion.
We report on the realization and optical characterization of a CMOS-compatible silicon-based microresonator/waveguide coupled system, fully integrated on a silicon chip. The device uses a vertical coupling scheme between the resonator and a buried strip waveguide. We demonstrate that its high optical quality follows from the accurate planarization of the waveguide topography. More importantly, we demonstrate a wafer-scale mass fabrication of freestanding planar resonators suspended in air and coupled to the integrated bus waveguides. A nanometer control of the coupling distances allows for a p…
We theoretically and numerically investigate the evolution of discrete soliton in a 1D linearly chirped nonlinear waveguide array (WA). The discrete soliton is self-accelerated inside the transversely chirped WA and emits a \textit{dynamic diffractive resonant radiation} (DifRR). The radiation appears when soliton wave-number matched with linear radiation wave. Unlike uniform WA, the DifRR can be excited even for zero wave-number of input soliton when the waveguide channels are chirped. The transverse modulation due to chirp conceptually imposes a linear potential which acts as a perturbation …
The Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation is in general not integrable by the inverse scattering method and support solitary-wave solution, called dissipative soliton (DS). We numerically demonstrate that, a DS can radiate dispersive waves (DWs) in presence of third-order dispersion (TOD). We propose a silicon-based active waveguide that excites stable DSs. Energy can be transferred from these stable DS to linear DWs when a resonance condition is achieved. The dynamics of the DS is governed by the complex GL equation which we solve numerically for different operational parameters. Numerical solution o…
Chaotic whispering-gallery modes have significance both for optical applications and for our understanding of the interplay between wave phenomena and the classical ray limit in the presence of chaotic dynamics and openness. In strongly non-convex geometries, a theorem by Mather rules out the existence of invariant curves in phase space corresponding to rays circulating in whispering-gallery patterns, so that no corresponding modes of this type are expected. Here we discuss numerical computations of the electromagnetic fields in planar dielectric cavities that are strongly non-convex becauseth…
We describe the results of the two methods we developed to calculate the stationary nonlinear solutions in one-dimensional plasmonic slot waveguides made of a finite-thickness nonlinear dielectric core surrounded by metal regions. These two methods are described in detail in the preceding article [Walasik et al., submitted]. For symmetric waveguides, we provide the nonlinear dispersion curves obtained using the two methods and compare them. We describe the well known low-order modes and the higher-modes that were not described before. All the modes are classified into two families: modes with …
The generation of THz radiation from ionizing two-color femtosecond pulses propagating in metallic hollow waveguides filled with Ar is numerically studied. We observe a strong reshaping of the low-frequency part of the spectrum. Namely, after several millimeters of propagation the spectrum is extended from hundreds of GHz up to ~150 THz. For longer propagation distances, nearly single-cycle near-infrared pulses with wavelengths around 4.5 um are obtained by appropriate spectral filtering, with an efficiency of up to 0.25%.
We analyse theoretically for the first time to our knowledge the perfect phase matching of guided TE and TM modes with a multilayer waveguide composed of linear isotropic dielectric materials. Alongside strict investigation into dispersion relations for multilayer systems, we give an explicit qualitative explanation for the phenomenon of mode matching on the basis of the standard one-dimensional homogenization technique, and discuss the minimum number of layers and the refractive index profile for the proposed device scheme. Direct applications of the scheme include polarization-insensitive, i…

We report a novel approach for on-chip electrical detection of the radiation guided by dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPW) and DLSPPW-based components. The detection is realized by fabricating DLSPPW components on the surface of a gold (Au) pad supported by a silicon (Si) substrate supplied with aluminum pads facilitating electrical connections, with the gold pad being perforated in a specific locations below the DLSPPWs in order to allow a portion of the DLSPPW-guided radiation to leak into the Si-substrate, where it is absorbed and electrically detected. We presen…
This article proposes a novel analytical model for the anisotropic multi-layer structures containing magnetically biased graphene sheets. The multi-layer structure is composed of various magnetic materials. An external magnetic field is applied, normal to the structure surface. Each graphene sheet, with an anisotropic conductivity tensor, has been sandwiched between two adjacent magnetic materials. Our model is used to find the dispersion relation of the structure. Now, obtaining plasmonic features of the structure, such as the effective index and propagation loss is straightforward. Four exem…
We propose an analytical approach to characterize undulator radiation near resonance, when the presence of the vacuum-pipe considerably affects radiation properties. This is the case of the far-infrared undulator beamline at the Free-electron LASer (FEL) in Hamburg (FLASH), that will be capable of delivering pulses in the TeraHertz (THz) range. This undulator will allow pump-probe experiments where THz pulses are naturally synchronized to the VUV pulse from the FEL, as well as the development of novel electron-beam diagnostics techniques. Since the THz radiation diffraction-size exceeds the va…
Classical Planck's theory of thermal radiation predicts an upper limit of the heat transfer between two bodies separated by a distance longer than the dominant radiation wavelength (far-field regime). This limit can be overcome when the dimensions of the absorbent bodies are smaller than the dominant wavelength due to hybrid electromagnetic waves, known as surface phonon-polaritons (SPhPs). Here, we experimentally demonstrate that the far-field radiative heat transfer between two non-absorbent bodies can also overcome Planck's limit, by coating them with an absorbent material to form a polarit…
