The demonstration of an optical fiber based probe for efficiently exciting the waveguide modes of high-index contrast planar photonic crystal (PC) slabs is presented. Utilizing the dispersion of the PC, fiber taper waveguides formed from standard silica single-mode optical fibers are used to evanescently couple light into the guided modes of a patterned silicon membrane. A coupling efficiency of approximately 95% is obtained between the fiber taper and a PC waveguide mode suitably designed for integration with a previously studied ultra-small mode volume high-Q PC resonant cavity [1]. The micron-scale lateral extent and dispersion of the fiber taper is also used as a near-field spatial and spectral probe to study the profile and dispersion of PC waveguide modes. The mode selectivity of this wafer-scale probing technique, together with its high efficiency, suggests that it will be useful in future quantum and non-linear optics experiments employing planar PCs.
A technique based on using optical fiber taper waveguides for probing single emitters embedded in thin dielectric membranes is assessed through numerical simulations. For an appropriate membrane geometry, photoluminescence collection efficiencies in excess of 10 % are predicted, exceeding the efficiency of standard free-space collection by an order of magnitude. Our results indicate that these fiber taper waveguides offer excellent prospects for performing efficient spectroscopy of single emitters embedded in thin films, such as a single self-assembled quantum dot in a semiconductor membrane.
Fiber taper waveguides are used to improve the efficiency of room temperature photoluminescence measurements of AlGaAs microdisk resonant cavities with embedded self-assembled InAs quantum dots. As a near-field collection optic, the fiber taper improves the collection efficiency from microdisk lasers by a factor of ~ 15-100 times in comparison to conventional normal incidence free-space collection techniques. In addition, the fiber taper can serve as a efficient means for pumping these devices, and initial measurements employing fiber pumping and collection are presented. Implications of this …
We propose to use the integrated aluminum nitride waveguide with engineered width variation to achieve optical frequency conversion based on $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear effect on a photonic chip. We show that in an adiabatically tapered waveguide, the frequency conversion has a much broader bandwidth and the efficiency within the bandwidth is almost constant, which is favorable for short pulses. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically an "area law" for the frequency conversion, i.e. the product of bandwidth and efficiency is conserved as long as peak conversion efficiency does not saturate. T…
The vast development of integrated quantum photonic technology enables the implementation of compact and stable interferometric networks. In particular laser-written waveguide structures allow for complex 3D-circuits and polarization-encoded qubit manipulation. However, the main limitation for the scale-up of integrated quantum devices is the single-photon loss due to mode-profile mismatch when coupling to standard fibers or other optical platforms. Here we demonstrate tapered waveguide structures, realized by an adapted femtosecond laser writing technique. We show that coupling to standard si…
Many photonic quantum information processing applications would benefit from a high brightness, fiber-coupled source of triggered single photons. Here, we present a fiber-coupled photonic-crystal waveguide single-photon source relying on evanescent coupling of the light field from a tapered out-coupler to an optical fiber. A two-step approach is taken where the performance of the tapered out-coupler is recorded first on an independent device containing an on-chip reflector. Reflection measurements establish that the chip-to-fiber coupling efficiency exceeds 80 %. The detailed characterization …
We extend the Krylov-subspace based time-dependent numerical simulation technique for a qubit interacting with photons in a waveguide to the multiple qubit case. We analyze photon scattering from two qubits analytically and derive expressions for the bound states in the continuum (BIC). We show how the BIC can be excited. We use the BIC in a recent Pauli-Z gate proposal involving decoherence free subspaces and obtain the gate fidelity as a function of the gate parameters. The techniques presented in the paper are useful for investigating the time evolution of quantum gates and other many-body …
We report a numerical design procedure for pursuing a near-unity coupling efficiency in quantum dot-cavity ridge waveguide single-photon sources by performing simulations with the finite element method. Our optimum design which is based on a 1D nanobeam cavity, achieves a high source efficiency $ε_{xy}$ of 97.7$\%$ for an isotropic in-plane dipole, together with a remarkable Purcell factor of 38.6. Such a good performance is mainly attributed to the high index contrast of GaAs/SiO$_2$ and a careful cavity design achieving constructive interference and low scattering losses. Furthermore, we ana…
We dispersively interface an ensemble of one thousand atoms trapped in the evanescent field surrounding a tapered optical nanofiber. This method relies on the azimuthally-asymmetric coupling of the ensemble with the evanescent field of an off-resonant probe beam, transmitted through the nanofiber. The resulting birefringence and dispersion are significant; we observe a phase shift per atom of $\sim$\,1\,mrad at a detuning of six times the natural linewidth, corresponding to an effective resonant optical density per atom of 0.027. Moreover, we utilize this strong dispersion to non-destructively…

We present the design, fabrication and characterization of LNOI fiber-to-chip inverse tapers for efficient edge coupling. The etching characteristics of various LNOI crystal cuts are investigated for the realization of butt-coupling devices. We experimentally demonstrate that the crystal cut limits the performance of mode matching tapers. We report a butt-coupling loss of 2.5 dB/facet and 6 dB/facet by implementing 200 nm tip mode matching tapers in $+Z$-cut LNOI and $X$-cut MgO:LNOI waveguides with low propagation loss. We anticipate that these results will provide insight into the nanostruct…
We propose a nanowaveguide platform for collective atom-light interaction through evanescent field coupling. We have developed a 1cm-long silicon nitride nanowaveguide can use evanescent fields to trap and probe an ensemble of 87Rb atoms. The waveguide has a sub-micrometer square mode area and was designed with tapers for high fiber-to-waveguide coupling efficiencies at near-infrared wavelengths (750nm to 1100nm). Inverse tapers in the platform adiabatically transfer a weakly guided mode of fiber-coupled light into a strongly guided mode with an evanescent field to trap atoms and then back to …
Photonic quantum technologies have been extensively studied in quantum information science, owing to the high-speed transmission and outstanding low-noise properties of photons. However, applications based on photonic entanglement are restricted due to the diffraction limit. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the maintaining of quantum polarization entanglement in a nanoscale hybrid plasmonic waveguide composed of a fiber taper and a silver nanowire. The transmitted state throughout the waveguide has a fidelity of 0.932 with the maximally polarization entangled state Φ+. Furthermo…
Efficient coupling of single quantum emitters to guided optical modes of integrated optical devices is of high importance for applications in quantum information science as well as in the field of sensing. Here we present the design and fabrication of a platform for on-chip experiments based on dielectric optical single-mode waveguides(Ta2O5 on SiO2). The design of the waveguide is optimized for broadband (600-800 nm) evanescent coupling to a single quantum emitter (expected efficiency: up to 36%) and efficient off-chip coupling to single-mode optical fibers using inverted tapers. First test s…
We demonstrate monolithically defined grating couplers in $Z$-cut lithium niobate on insulator for efficient vertical coupling between an optical fiber and a single mode waveguide. The grating couplers exhibit $\sim 44.6\%$/coupler and $\sim 19.4\%$/coupler coupling efficiency for TE and TM polarized light respectively. Taperless grating couplers are investigated to realize a more compact design.
