The Navier-Stokes equations describing laminar flow of an incompressible fluid will be solved. Different group of general solutions for Navier stokes equations governing Laminar incompressible fluids will be derived.
The study solves the general solution to 2D steady Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible flow without vorticity diffusion, which is more general than Stokes flow. In order to obtain the general solution, two potential functions are introduced to express the velocity: a vector potential describing the rotational incompressible flow and a scalar potential describing the irrotational incompressible flow. The results show that the vorticity equation expressed with potential functions is a biharmonic function, which means that the potential functions describing the flow field are polynomials of…
We have confirmed numerically that a subcritical laminar-turbulence transition that belongs to directed percolation (DP) universality class occurs in a purely two-dimensional (2D) simple Navier-Stokes (NS) flow without any walls. The flow is called (extended) Kolmogorov flow which is governed by 2D NS equation in a doubly periodic box with a linear drag and a finite flow rate in the direction in which Galilean invariance is broken. We examine the mechanism of DP class transition focusing on the role of the additional control parameters: the drag coefficient and the flow rate. The drag kills co…
Over the past few years, deep learning methods have proved to be of great interest for the computational fluid dynamics community, especially when used as surrogate models, either for flow reconstruction, turbulence modeling, or for the prediction of aerodynamic coefficients. Overall, exceptional levels of accuracy have been obtained, but the robustness and reliability of the proposed approaches remain to be explored, particularly outside of the confidence region defined by the training dataset. In this contribution, we present a twin auto-encoder network for incompressible laminar flow recons…
Stabilised mixed velocity-pressure formulations are one of the widely-used finite element schemes for computing the numerical solutions of laminar incompressible Navier-Stokes. In these formulations, the Newton-Raphson scheme is employed to solve the nonlinearity in the convection term. One fundamental issue with this approach is the computational cost incurred in the Newton-Raphson iterations at every load/time step. In this paper, we present an iteration-free mixed finite element formulation for incompressible Navier-Stokes that preserves second-order temporal accuracy of the generalised-alp…
Unsteady laminar vortex shedding over a circular cylinder is predicted using a deep learning technique, a generative adversarial network (GAN), with a particular emphasis on elucidating the potential of learning the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Numerical simulations at two different Reynolds numbers with different time-step sizes are conducted to produce training datasets of flow field variables. Unsteady flow fields in the future at a Reynolds number which is not in the training datasets are predicted using a GAN. Predicted flow fields are found to qualitatively and quantitatively…
Physics-informed deep learning has drawn tremendous interest in recent years to solve computational physics problems, whose basic concept is to embed physical laws to constrain/inform neural networks, with the need of less data for training a reliable model. This can be achieved by incorporating the residual of physics equations into the loss function. Through minimizing the loss function, the network could approximate the solution. In this paper, we propose a mixed-variable scheme of physics-informed neural network (PINN) for fluid dynamics and apply it to simulate steady and transient lamina…
It is shown how the variable density model (VDM) that governs the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) for the miscible mixing of two incompressible fluids can be transformed into a diffusive version of the inhomogeneous, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by gradients of the composition density $ρ$ of the mixing layer. This demonstrates how buoyancy-driven flows drive and enhance Navier-Stokes turbulence. The role of the potential vorticity $q = ω\cdot\nablaρ$ is also discussed.
We study the regularity criteria for weak solutions to the $3D$ incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in terms of the geometry of vortex structures, taking into account the boundary effects. A boundary regularity theorem is proved on regular domains with a class of oblique derivative boundary conditions, providing that the vorticity of the fluid is coherently aligned. In particular, we establish the boundary regularity on round balls, half-spaces and right circular cylindrical ducts, subject to the classical Navier and kinematic boundary conditions.
Permeability estimation of porous media from direct solving Navier--Stokes equation has a wide spectrum of applications in petroleum industry. In this paper, we utilize a pressure-correction projection algorithm in conjunction with the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme for space discretization to build an incompressible Navier--Stokes simulator and to use this simulator to calculate permeability of real rock sample. The proposed method is accurate, numerically robust, and exhibits the potential for tackling realistic problems.
Both compressible and incompressible Navier-Stokes solvers can be used and are used to solve incompressible turbulent flow problems. In the compressible case, the Mach number is then considered as a solver parameter that is set to a small value, $\mathrm{M}\approx 0.1$, in order to mimic incompressible flows. This strategy is widely used for high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The present work raises the question regarding the computational efficiency of compressible DG solvers as compared to a genuinely incompressible formulation. Our…
Solution to two-dimensional Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations with SIMPLE, SIMPLER and Vorticity-Stream Function Approaches. Driven-Lid Cavity Problem: Solution and Visualization
Unstable periodic orbits are believed to underpin the dynamics of turbulence, but by their nature are hard to find computationally. We present a family of methods to converge such unstable periodic orbits for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, based on variations of an integral objective functional, and using traditional gradient-based optimisation strategies. Different approaches for handling the incompressibility condition are considered. The variational methods are applied to the specific case of periodic, two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow and compared against existing Newton iterati…
This paper focuses on the so-called Weighted Inertia-Dissipation-Energy (WIDE) variational approach for the approximation of unsteady Leray-Hopf solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes system. Initiated in [56], this variational method is here extended to the case of non-Newtonian fluids with power-law index $r\geq11/5$ in three space dimensions and large nonhomogeneous data. Moreover, boundary conditions are not imposed on some parts of boundaries, representing, e.g., outflows. Correspondingly, natural boundary conditions arise from the minimization. In particular, at walls we recover b…
Statistical solutions, which are time-parameterized probability measures on spaces of square-integrable functions, have been established as a suitable framework for global solutions of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSE). We compute numerical approximations of statistical solutions of NSE on two-dimensional domains with non-periodic boundary conditions and empirically investigate the convergence of these approximations and their observables. For the numerical solver, we use Monte Carlo sampling with an H(div)-FEM based deterministic solver. Our numerical experiments for high Reynolds …
