Incompressible 3D Euler equations develop high vorticity in very thin pancake-like regions from generic large-scale initial conditions. In this work we propose an exact solution of the Euler equations for the asymptotic pancake evolution. This solution combines a shear flow aligned with an asymmetric straining flow, and is characterized by a single asymmetry parameter and an arbitrary transversal vorticity profile. The analysis is based on detailed comparison with numerical simulations performed using a pseudo-spectral method in anisotropic grids of up to 972 x 2048 x 4096.
The incompressible three-dimensional ideal flows develop very thin pancake-like regions of increasing vorticity. These regions evolve with the scaling $ω_{\max}(t)\propto\ell(t)^{-2/3}$ between the vorticity maximum and pancake thickness, and provide the leading contribution to the energy spectrum, where the gradual formation of the Kolmogorov interval $E_{k}\propto k^{-5/3}$ is observed for some initial flows [Agafontsev et. al, Phys. Fluids 27, 085102 (2015)]. With the massive numerical simulations, in the present paper we study the influence of initial conditions on the processes of pancake…
The study solves the general solution to 2D steady Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible flow without vorticity diffusion, which is more general than Stokes flow. In order to obtain the general solution, two potential functions are introduced to express the velocity: a vector potential describing the rotational incompressible flow and a scalar potential describing the irrotational incompressible flow. The results show that the vorticity equation expressed with potential functions is a biharmonic function, which means that the potential functions describing the flow field are polynomials of…
We perform the systematic numerical study of high vorticity structures that develop in the 3D incompressible Euler equations from generic large-scale initial conditions. We observe that a multitude of high vorticity structures appear in the form of thin vorticity sheets (pancakes). Our analysis reveals the self-similarity of the pancakes evolution, which is governed by two different exponents $e^{-t/T_{\ell}}$ and $e^{t/T_ω}$ describing compression in the transverse direction and the vorticity growth respectively, with the universal ratio $T_{\ell}/T_ω \approx 2/3$. We relate development of th…
Predicting the long time or late time states of two-dimensional incompressible, high Reynolds number, slowly decaying turbulence has been one of the long-standing problems. Using ``point vortices'' as ``inviscid'' building blocks, which do not respect incompressibility, statistical mechanical models conserving only total energy and zero total circulation result in the well-known sinh-Poisson relation between vorticity and stream function. On the other hand, statistical mechanics of ``inviscid patch'' vortices, which respects incompressibility by conserving regions of zero and nonzero vorticity…
Very high-order accurate finite volume scheme for the streamfunction-vorticity formulation of incompressible fluid flows with polygonal meshes on arbitrary curved boundaries
In a recent work [1] the authors studied the dynamics of the interface separating a vacuum from an inviscid incompressible fluid, subject to the self-gravitational force and neglecting surface tension, in two space dimensions. The fluid is additionally assumed to be irrotational, and we proved that for data which are size $ε$ perturbations of an equilibrium state, the lifespan $T$ of solutions satisfies $T \gtrsim ε^{-2}$. The key to the proof is to find a nonlinear transformation of the unknown function and a coordinate change, such that the equation for the new unknown in the new coordinate …
The formalism of frozen-in vortex lines for two-dimensional (2D) flows in ideal incompressible electron magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD) is formulated. A localized approximation for nonlinear dynamics of two close sheets of the generalized vorticity is suggested and its integrability by the hodograph method is demonstrated.
We develop a novel multiscale model of interface motion for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) for two-dimensional, inviscid, compressible flows with vorticity, which yields a fast-running numerical algorithm that produces both qualitatively and quantitatively similar results to a resolved gas dynamics code, while running approximately two orders of magnitude (in time) faster. Our multiscale model is founded upon a new compressible-incompressible decomposition of the velocity field $u=v+w$. The incompressible component $w$ of the velocity is also irro…
Two dimensional flows on fixed smooth surfaces have been studied in the point of view of vorticity dynamics. Firstly, the related deformation theory including kinematics and kinetics is developed. Secondly, some primary relations in vorticity dynamics have been extended to two dimensional flows on fixed smooth surface through which a theoretical framework of vorticity dynamics have been set up, mainly including governing equation of vorticity, Lagrange theorem on vorticity, Caswell formula on strain tensor and stream function & vorticity algorithm with pressure Possion equation for incompressi…
A visualization of three-dimensional incompressible flows by divergence-free quasi-two-dimensional projections of velocity field on three coordinate planes is proposed. It is argued that such divergence-free projections satisfying all the velocity boundary conditions are unique for a given velocity field. It is shown that the projected fields and their vector potentials can be calculated using divergence-free Galerkin bases. Using natural convection flow in a laterally heated cube as an example, it is shown that the projection proposed allow for a better understanding of similarities and diffe…
In this paper, we perform a careful numerical study of nearly singular solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations with smooth initial data. We consider the interaction of two perturbed antiparallel vortex tubes which was previously investigated by Kerr in \cite{Kerr93,Kerr05}. In our numerical study, we use both the pseudo-spectral method with the 2/3 dealiasing rule and the pseudo-spectral method with a high order Fourier smoothing. Moreover, we perform a careful resolution study with grid points as large as $1536\times1024\times 3072$ to demonstrate the convergence of both numerical …
The present paper is devoted to implementation of the immersed boundary technique into the Fourier pseudo-spectral solution of the vorticity-velocity formulation of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. The immersed boundary conditions are implemented via direct modification of the convection and diffusion terms, and therefore, in contrast to many other similar methods, there is not an explicit external forcing function in the present formulation. The desired immersed boundary conditions are approximated on some regular grid points, using different orders (up to second-o…
This work revisits the production of vorticity at an interface separating two immiscible incompressible fluids. A new decomposition of the vorticity flux is proposed in a two-dimensional context which allows to compute explicitly such a quantity in terms of surface tension $σ$, viscosity $μ$ and gravity $g$. This approach is then applied in the context of gravito-capillary waves. It leads to analytical results already known but from a new perspective, provides some quantitative predictions at short time that can be a good test for numerical codes. Finally it is a mean to obtain a qualitative u…
It is shown how the variable density model (VDM) that governs the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) for the miscible mixing of two incompressible fluids can be transformed into a diffusive version of the inhomogeneous, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by gradients of the composition density $ρ$ of the mixing layer. This demonstrates how buoyancy-driven flows drive and enhance Navier-Stokes turbulence. The role of the potential vorticity $q = ω\cdot\nablaρ$ is also discussed.
It is shown: 1) that in two-dimensional, incompressible, viscous flows the vorticity-area distribution evolves according to an advection-diffusion equation with a negative, time dependent diffusion coefficient and 2) how to use the vorticity-streamfunction relations, i.e., the so-called scatter-plots, of the quasi-stationary coherent structures in order to quantify the experimentally observed changes of the vorticity distribution moments leading to the formation of these structures.
In this paper we consider a conservative discretization of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. We propose an extension of Arakawa's classical finite difference scheme for fluid flow in the vorticity-stream function formulation to a high order discontinuous Galerkin approximation. In addition, we show numerical simulations that demonstrate the accuracy of the scheme and verify the conservation properties, which are essential for long time integration. Furthermore, we discuss the massively parallel implementation on graphic processing units.
A method for deriving provably stable low-dimensional Galerkin models of post-transient incompressible flows is introduced. The proposed approach involves an iterative procedure for expansion modes that satisfy Lyapunov stability in the neighborhood of a fixed point. The approach is demonstrated using two prototypical flow configurations: a two-dimensional mixing layer, and two-dimensional flow inside a lid-driven cavity. This new methodology can be a building block in an effort to develop more accurate and more robust low-dimensional models of incompressible flows.
Based on the mechanics of the Euler equation at short time, we show that a Recent Fluid Deformation (RFD) closure for the vorticity field, neglecting the early stage of advection of fluid particles, allows to build a 3D incompressible velocity field that shares many properties with empirical turbulence, such as the teardrop shape of the R-Q plane. Unfortunately, non gaussianity is weak (i.e. no intermittency) and vorticity gets preferentially aligned with the wrong eigenvector of the deformation. We then show that slightly modifying the former vectorial field in order to impose the long range …
In this study, the hyperbolic method is adopted to explore the flow field states of incompressible flow in a four-sided lid-driven square cavity. In particular, we focus on the flow bifurcation obtained at the critical Reynolds number $R_e \simeq 130$. In the hyperbolic method, the diffusive term is transformed into an hyperbolic one by introducing a diffusion flux term, which is the solution of an additional equation. A classical Riemann-like solver with a finite-volume discretization is thus employed for the full flux (splitted into advective and diffusive parts), in order to solve the stead…
We present a coarse-grid projection (CGP) method for accelerating incompressible flow computations, which is applicable to methods involving Poisson equations as incompressibility constraints. The CGP methodology is a modular approach that facilitates data transfer with simple interpolations and uses black-box solvers for the Poisson and advection-diffusion equations in the flow solver. After solving the Poisson equation on a coarsened grid, an interpolation scheme is used to obtain the fine data for subsequent time stepping on the full grid. A particular version of the method is applied here …
We study the regularity criteria for weak solutions to the $3D$ incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in terms of the geometry of vortex structures, taking into account the boundary effects. A boundary regularity theorem is proved on regular domains with a class of oblique derivative boundary conditions, providing that the vorticity of the fluid is coherently aligned. In particular, we establish the boundary regularity on round balls, half-spaces and right circular cylindrical ducts, subject to the classical Navier and kinematic boundary conditions.
In this paper we establish a mathematical framework which may be used to design Monte-Carlo simulations for a class of time irreversible dynamic systems, such as incompressible fluid flows, including turbulent flows in wall-bounded regions, and some other (non-linear) dynamic systems. Path integral representations for solutions of forward parabolic equations are obtained, and, in combining with the vorticity transport equations, probabilistic formulations for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are therefore derived in terms of (forward) McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations (SD…
A variational principle is derived for two-dimensional incompressible rotational fluid flow with a free surface in a moving vessel when both the vessel and fluid motion are to be determined. The fluid is represented by a stream function and the vessel motion is represented by a path in the planar Euclidean group. Novelties in the formulation include how the pressure boundary condition is treated, the introduction of a stream function into the Euler-Poincaré variations, the derivation of free surface variations, and how the equations for the vessel path in the Euclidean group, coupled to the fl…
We investigate the spatio-temporal structure of the most likely configurations realising extremely high vorticity or strain in the stochastically forced 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Most likely configurations are computed by numerically finding the highest probability velocity field realising an extreme constraint as solution of a large optimisation problem. High-vorticity configurations are identified as pinched vortex filaments with swirl, while high-strain configurations correspond to counter-rotating vortex rings. We additionally observe that the most likely configurations fo…
This study provides sufficient conditions for the temporal monotonic decay of enstrophy for two-dimensional perturbations traveling in the incompressible, viscous, plane Poiseuille and Couette flows. Extension of J. L. Synge's procedure (1938) to the initial-value problem allowed us to find the region of the wavenumber-Reynolds number map where the enstrophy of any initial disturbance cannot grow. This region is wider than the kinetic energy's one. We also show that the parameters space is split in two regions with clearly distinct propagation and dispersion properties.
The incompressible three-dimensional Euler equations develop very thin pancake-like regions of increasing vorticity. These regions evolve with the scaling $ω_{max}\sim\ell^{-2/3}$ between the vorticity maximum and the pancake thickness, as was observed in the recent numerical experiments [D.S. Agafontsev et al, Phys. Fluids 27, 085102 (2015)]. We study the process of pancakes' development in terms of the vortex line representation (VLR), which represents a partial integration of the Euler equations with respect to conservation of the Cauchy invariants and describes compressible dynamics of con…
We explain why the theory of Escauriaza, Seregin, and Sverak (Russian Math. Surveys, 2003) on potential finite time singularity in Navier-Stokes solutions must be largely misapprehended. It is found that the proofs of the backward uniqueness theorem for parabolic equations contain technical errors. The stated validity of a theorem for vorticity is established on ill-informed analyses as the solenoidal constraint is not taken into account. There are many cases where parabolic scalings are erroneously applied. We briefly discuss a number of related issues.
The Hermite pseudospectral method is applied to solve the Navier-Stokes equations on a two-dimensional infinite domain. The feature of Hermite function allows us to adopt larger time steps than other spectral methods, but also leads to some extra computation when the stream-function is calculated from the vorticity field. The scaling factor is employed to increase the resolution within the region of our main interest, and the aliasing error is fully removed by the 2/3-$rule$. Several traditional numerical experiments are performed with high accuracy, and some related future work on physical ap…
At present in the fluid mechanics, mostly one like to use the vortex as a basic physical quantity, such that some exact solutions is based on the vorticity evolution equation. For the vortex flow problem with axisymmetry, it is well known that there exists in the circulation as a mechanical system of basic physical quantities. In this paper, from the basic dynamic equation of the mechanical system, the self-similar solution, eigenvalue system into a self- consistent, new exact solutions of the two-dimensional circular symmetric vortex flow are obtained, and some further comparison are made wit…
In the present paper, we examine the viscous flow evolution in a square cavity. Coupled with the stream function, the initial-boundary value problem of the vorticity is numerically solved by a method of iteration. The only boundary condition is the wall velocity which in turn defines the Dirichlet value for the stream function. We assert that the corner singularity in the cavity flow is in fact a theoretical artefact. By adopting suitably regulated lid velocity, excellent comparison with experiments is found because of the converged palinstrophy field. Our calculations demonstrate that asymmet…
We consider the 3D incompressible Euler equations in vorticity form in the following fundamental domain for the octahedral symmetry group: $\{ (x_1,x_2,x_3): 0<x_3<x_2<x_1 \}.$ In this domain, we prove local well-posedness for $C^α$ vorticities not necessarily vanishing on the boundary with any $0<α<1$, and establish finite-time singularity formation within the same class for smooth and compactly supported initial data. The solutions can be extended to all of $\mathbb{R}^3$ via a sequence of reflections, and therefore we obtain finite-time singularity formation for the 3D Euler equations in $\…
Coherent vortices are often observed to persist for long times in turbulent 2D flows even at very high Reynolds numbers and are observed in experiments and computer simulations to potentially be asymptotically stable in a weak sense for the 2D Euler equations. We consider the incompressible 2D Euler equations linearized around a radially symmetric, strictly monotone decreasing vorticity distribution. For sufficiently regular data, we prove the inviscid damping of the $θ$-dependent radial and angular velocity fields with the optimal rates $\|u^r(t)\| \lesssim \langle t \rangle^{-1}$ and $\|u^θ(…
