The innermost part of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) experiment at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will be a pixel detector, which is presently under construction. Once installed into the experimental area, access will be extremely limited. To ensure that the integrated detector assembly operates as expected, a fraction of the detector which includes the power supplies and monitoring system, the optical readout, and the pixel modules themselves, has been assembled and operated in a laboratory setting for what we refer to as system tests. Results from these tests are presented.
After a ten years planning and construction phase, the ATLAS pixel detector is nearing its completion and is scheduled to be integrated into the ATLAS detector to take data with the first LHC collisions in 2007. An overview of the construction is presented with particular emphasis on some of the major and most recent problems encountered and solved.

The innermost part of the ATLAS experiment will be a pixel detector containing around 1750 individual detector modules. A detector control system (DCS) is required to handle thousands of I/O channels with varying characteristics. The main building blocks of the pixel DCS are the cooling system, the power supplies and the thermal interlock system, responsible for the ultimate safety of the pixel sensors. Standard as well as irradiated silicon pixel detectors developed for the ATLAS experiment were tested in a beam. Digital and analog resolutions were determined comparing the positions measured by a microstrip telescope and by the pixel detector. Digital resolutions of 10 um and analog resolutions of 6 um (before irradiation) and 10 um (after irradiation) are obtained without subtracting the error on the position determined by the telescope.
In view of the LHC upgrade phases towards HL-LHC the ATLAS experiment plans to upgrade the Inner Detector with an all silicon system. For the ATLAS Pixel Detector fast readout electronics has been successfully developed and tested. Main attention was given to the ability to detect small charges in the order of 5,000 electrons within 25 ns in the harsh radiation environment of LHC together with the challenge to cope with the huge amount of data generated by the 80 millions channels of the Pixel detector. For the integration of the 50 micron pitch hybrid pixel detector reliable bump bonding techniques using either lead-tin or indium bumps has been developed and has been successfully tested for large scale production.
The ATLAS Detector will be upgraded for higher intensity running of the LHC. A long shutdown is envisioned in 2016 prior to the so-called Phase I running. To extend the physics reach of the LHC, accelerator upgrades are planned which will increase the integrated luminosity to beyond 3000 fb^-1 and the pile-up per bunch-crossing by a factor 5 to 10. We present the results of the characterization of pixel modules composed of 75 um thick n-in-p sensors and ATLAS FE-I3 chips, interconnected with the SLID (Solid Liquid Inter-Diffusion) technology. This technique, developed at Fraunhofer-EMFT, is explored as an alternative to the bump-bonding process. We report on the development of n-on-p, 3D Double-Side Double Type Column (3D-DDTC) pixel detectors fabricated at FBK-irst (Trento, Italy) and oriented to the ATLAS upgrade. In view of the LHC upgrade for the High Luminosity Phase (HL-LHC), the ATLAS experiment is planning to replace the Inner Detector with an all-Silicon system. The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade requires the planned Inner Tracker (ITk) of the ATLAS detector to tolerate extremely high radiation doses. BDAQ53 is a readout system and verification framework for hybrid pixel detector readout chips of the RD53 family. The ATLAS experiment pixel detector upgrade plans are focused on development of new technology, including the FE-I4 readout integrated circuit. The first upgrade project to make use of this new technology is an "Insertable B-Layer" (IBL) pixel detector to be installed on a replacement beam pipe in 2013. The IBL will fit inside and not alter the existing ATLAS pixel detector. However, the possibility is being studied to replace the pixel whole detector in 2018 with a lower mass, higher performance instrument based on the FE-I4 chip and new mechanical structures.
The barrel part of the ATLAS pixel detector will consist of 112 carbon-carbon structures called "staves" with 13 hybrid detector modules being glued on each stave. The demands on the glue joints are high, both in terms of mechanical precision and thermal contact. The existing ATLAS Tracker will be at its functional limit for particle fluences of 10^15 neq/cm^2 (LHC). We report on a technique developed to diagnostic for non working readout channels of the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT), one of the three inner detectors of the ATLAS experiment. From a detailled study, we show that 99.6 % of the readout channels of the TRT endcap-detector are perfectly operational.

The ATLAS detector is currently being upgraded with a new layer of pixel based charged particle tracking and a new arrangement of the services for the pixel detector. These upgrades require the replacement of the opto-boards previously used by the pixel detector. In this report we give details on the design and production of the new opto-boards.

The ATLAS Forward Physics (AFP) project plans to install 3D silicon pixel detectors about 210 m away from the interaction point and very close to the beamline (2-3 mm). This implies the need of slim edges of about 100-200 $μ$m width for the sensor side facing the beam to minimise the dead area. The ATLAS Insertable B-Layer (IBL) detector was installed into the ATLAS experiment in 2014 and has been in operation since 2015. During the first year of IBL data taking an increase of the low voltage currents associated with the FE-I4 front-end chip was observed and this increase was traced back to the radiation damage in the chip. The dependence of the current on the total-ionising dose and temperature has been tested with X-ray and proton irradiations and will be presented in this paper together with the detector operation guidelines.

This work presents a depleted monolithic active pixel sensor (DMAPS) prototype manufactured in the LFoundry 150\,nm CMOS process. DMAPS exploit high voltage and/or high resistivity inclusion of modern CMOS technologies to achieve substantial depletion in the sensing volume. Pixel sensors based on commercial high-voltage CMOS processes are an exciting technology that is considered as an option for the outer layer of the ATLAS inner tracker upgrade at the High Luminosity LHC. Here, charged particles are detected using deep n-wells as sensor diodes with the depleted region extending into the silicon bulk. The upgrade of the ATLAS muon spectrometer for high-luminosity LHC requires new trigger and readout electronics for the various elements of the detector. We present the design of a time-to-digital converter (TDC) ASIC prototype for the ATLAS Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) detector. The chip was fabricated in a GlobalFoundries 130 nm CMOS technology. Studies indicate that its timing and power consumption characteristics meet the design specifications, with a timing bin variation of 40 ps for all 48 channels with a power consumption of about 6.5 mW per channel.
We present a gigabit transceiver prototype Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), GBCR, for the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) Pixel detector readout upgrade. GBCR is designed in a 65-nm CMOS technology and consists of four upstream receiver channels, a downstream transmitter channel, and an Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) slave.
