We presents the results of study of focusing and imaging properties of double-lens system for hard x-ray radiation consisting of two Fresnel zone plates (ZP) made from silicon. We demonstrate for the first time the phenomenon of focusing by two crystal ZP located at significant distance from each other. We investigate by both theoretically and experimentally the peculiarities of intensity distribution at the focal plane during a scan by second ZP normally to the optical axis of the system. We investigate as well the intensity distribution along the optical axis for our double-lens system from crystal ZP. We realize experimentally a registration of the focused image of the object by means of double-lens system based on ZP. Measurements are performed on the beam line BM-5 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) at the x-ray energy 9.4 keV. We elaborate a computer program for theoretical simulation of the optical properties of x-ray double-lens system based on ZPs. A calculation is made by convolution of transmission function and Kirchhoff propagator in paraxial approximation by means of Fast Fourier Transformation.
Three dimensional laser beam steering has been demonstrated using a single optical device -a DMD micro-mirror array. Laser beam focus position is controlled using dynamically adjustable zone plates. These zone plates take the form of elliptical Fresnel zone plates or other variations such as binary Gabor zone plates. Active beam control can be realised without the need for a pair of galvanometer mirrors and a focusing lens. Writing multiple zone plate patterns to the DMD enables multiple focussed spots to be generated and controlled independently
The new type of multilevel Fresnel zone plate, consisting of stacked layers with bi-level zone profile has been investigated. The conditions of layers acting as single multilevel Fresnel zone plate have been discussed by numerical simulation. The criteria for layers alignment have been presented. Considered approach of zone plate fabrication allows achieving high level focusing efficiency from one side and decreasing zone profile etching deep from the other.
Fresnel zone plates are diffractive elements that are essential to form images in many scientific and technological areas, especially where refractive optics is not available. One of the main shortcomings of Fresnel zone plates, which limit their utility with broadband sources, is their high chromatic aberration. Recently presented, Fractal Zone Plates (FZPs) are diffractive lenses characterized by an extended focal depth with a fractal structure. This behaviour predicts an improved performance of FZPs as image forming devices with an extended depth of field and a reduced chromatic aberration.…
The images of the silicon test object has been carried out. An image for in-line hard X-ray hologram is presented. The transmission of a hologram image for hard X-ray radiation using Fresnel phase zone plate has been investigated.
Strict requirements were imposed on the sizes of testing sample in the previously suggested scheme of hard X-ray Fourier-transform holography based on a two-block Fresnel zone plate interferometer with common optical axis. The failure of these requirements leads to appearance of noise in the reconstructed image. In this work, the mechanism of noise formation, as well as possibility of its suppression are considered.
The construction of fractal generalized zone plates (FraGZPs) from a set of periodic diffractive optical elements with circular symmetry is proposed. This allows us to increase the number of foci of a conventional fractal zone plate (FraZP), keeping the self-similarity property within the axial irradiance. The focusing properties of these fractal diffractive optical elements for points not only along but also in the close vicinity of the optical axis are investigated. In both cases analytical expressions for the irradiance are derived. Numerical simulations of the energetic efficiency of FraGZ…
Extraordinary optical transmission and good focusing properties of a two-dimensional scattering structure is presented. The structure is made of Fresnel zone plates periodically arranged along two orthogonal directions. Each plate consists of two ring-shaped waveguides supporting modes that match the symmetry of a circularly polarized incident plane wave. High field concentration at the focal plane is obtained with short transverse and long longitudinal foci diameters. Optical vortex excitation in a paraxial region of the transmitted field is also observed and analysed in terms of cross-polari…
Ultrathin optical limiters are needed to protect light sensitive components in miniaturized optical systems. However, it has proven challenging to achieve a sufficiently low optical limiting threshold. In this work, we theoretically show that an ultrathin optical limiter with low threshold intensity can be realized using a nonlinear zone plate. The zone plate is embedded with nonlinear saturable absorbing materials that allow the device to focus low intensity light, while high intensity light is transmitted as a plane wave without a focal spot. Based on this proposed mechanism, we use the fini…
We propose a family of zone plates which are produced by the generalized Fibonacci sequences and their axial focusing properties are analyzed in detail. Compared with traditional Fresnel zone plates, the generalized Fibonacci zone plates present two axial foci with equal intensity. Besides, we propose an approach to adjust the axial locations of the two foci by means of different optical path difference, and further give the deterministic ratio of the two focal distances which attributes to their own generalized Fibonacci sequences. The generalized Fibonacci zone plates may allow for new appli…
Fresnel lens has a long history in optics. This concept at non-optical wavelengths is also applicable. In this paper we report design and fabrication of a half and quarter wave dielectric Fresnel lens made of Plexiglas, and a Fresnel reflector at 11.1 GHz frequency. We made two lenses and one reflector at same frequency and compare their gain and radiation pattern to simulated results. Some methods for better focusing action will be introduced.
The standard zone plate assumes that the shortest ray connecting a radiation source and a detection point has a phase of 0 deg thereby defining a reference phase. Here we examine the experimental consequences of varying this reference phase from 0 deg to 360 deg. It is concluded that reference phase is an intrinsic and useful property of zone plates.
Fresnel Zone Plates (FZP) are to date very successful focusing optics for X-rays. Established methods of fabrication are rather complex and based on electron beam lithography (EBL). Here, we show that ion beam lithography (IBL) may advantageously simplify their preparation. A FZP operable from the extreme UV to the limit of the hard X-ray was prepared and tested from 450 eV to 1500 eV. The trapezoidal profile of the FZP favorably activates its 2nd order focus. The FZP with an outermost zone width of 100 nm allows the visualization of features down to 61, 31 and 21 nm in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd or…
To generate hollow chain-like beams the diffraction of the first order Bessel beam by zone plate with two odd open Fresnel zone has been investigated. It has been shown that the capsules size is influenced by the number of the second odd open Fresnel zone and by the zone plate focal length. A hollow chain-like beam has been experimentally generated as a result of the first order Bessel beam diffraction by zone plate with the first and the ninth open Fresnel zones. The orbital angular momentum presence has been proved experimentally. The main features of the beam have been investigated. Suffici…
We present a new family of diffractive lenses whose structure is based on the combination of two concepts: photon sieve and fractal zone plates with variable lacunarity. The focusing properties of different members of this family are examined. It is shown that the sieves provide a smoothing effect on the higher order foci of a conventional lacunar fractal zone plate. However, the characteristic self-similar axial response of the fractal zone plates is always preserved.
Diffractive zone plate optics uses a thin micro-structure pattern to alter the propagation direction of the incoming light wave. It has found important applications in extreme-wavelength imaging where conventional refractive lenses do not exist. The resolution limit of zone plate optics is determined by the smallest width of the outermost zone. In order to improve the achievable resolution, significant efforts have been devoted to the fabrication of very small zone width with ultrahigh placement accuracy. Here, we report the use of a diffractometer setup for bypassing the resolution limit of z…
We optically assess Fresnel zone plates (FZPs) that are designed to guide cold atoms. Imaging of various ring patterns produced by the FZPs gives an average RMS error in the brightest part of the ring of 3% with respect to trap depth. This residue will be due to the imaging system, incident beam shape and FZP manufacturing tolerances. Axial propagation of the potentials is presented experimentally and through numerical simulations, illustrating prospects for atom guiding without requiring light sheets.
A brief, tutorial account is given of the differences between the near and far regions of the elec-tromagnetic field emphasizing the source-dependent behavior of the former and the universal properties of the latter. Field patterns of near-field plates, that is, metasurfaces used for sub-wavelength applications, are discussed in some detail. Examples are given of fields that decay away from the plates in an exponential manner, a ubiquitous feature of many interface problems, and metasurfaces for which the decay is not exponential, but algebraic. It is also shown that a properly designed system…
We study the optical properties of metamaterials made from cut-wire pairs or plate pairs. We obtain a more pronounced optical response for arrays of plate pairs -- a geometry which also eliminates the undesired polarization anisotropy of the cut-wire pairs. The measured optical spectra agree with simulations, revealing negative magnetic permeability in the range of telecommunications wavelengths. Thus, nanoscopic plate pairs might serve as an alternative to the established split-ring resonator design.
Using the Jones matrix formalism, crystal optical properties of inhomogeneous material consisting of a pile of weakly birefringent plates are analysed in relation to the cell model adopted in polarization tomography of 3D dielectric tensor field in photoelastic media. It is shown that the material manifests in general an "apparent" optical gyration caused by different orientations of the plates. Relations between the polarimetric parameters and the dielectric tensor components are ascertained for the case of weak optical anisotropy.
In the visible spectrum vortex beams have found various applications, ranging from optical tweezers to super-resolution imaging. Recently, these beams have been demonstrated using X-rays and electron beams. However, so far, no in-depth discussion has been carried out on the vortex quality, which could become essential for a variety of vortex applications. Here, we investigate the mode conversion efficiency (MCE), vortex structure and stability (in terms of vortex splitting) of the vortex fields generated by spiral zone plates (SZP). We have designed and fabricated SZPs with varying topological…
We propose and demonstrate a single channel interferometer that can be used to study how vortex beams propagate. The interferometer consists of a multifunctional diffractive optical element (MDOE) synthesized by the spatial random multiplexing of a Fresnel zone plate and a spiral Fresnel zone plate with different focal lengths. The MDOE generates two co-propagating beams, such that only the beam carrying orbital angular momentum is modulated by an annular stack of thin scatterers located at the focal plane of the Fresnel zone plate, while the other beam passes through the centre of the annulus…
With the increasing demand for potential applications in almost all fields in modern optics, the generation of vortex beams has attracted significant interest. Based on a flat plate made of electro-optical crystals, we propose an electrically controlling method to generate vortex beams assisted by the Pockels effect. Compared with traditional methods, our method allows flexibly tuning the wavelength and topological charge of the generated optical vortex beams. We simulate the propagation of optical beams transmitted from the flat plate and investigate the orbital-angular-momentum(OAM)-mode spe…
We have studied the optical oscillation and tunneling of light waves in optical waveguide ladders formed by two coupled planar optical waveguide arrays. For the band structure, a mid-zone gap is formed due to band hybridization and its wavenumber position can be tuned throughout the whole Brillouin zone, which is different from the Bragg gap. By imposing a gradient in the propagation constant in each array, Bloch-Zener oscillation (BZO) is realized with Zener tunneling between the bands occurring at mid zone, which is contrary to the common BZO with tunneling at the center or edge of the Brill…
Fibonacci or bifocal terahertz (THz) imaging is demonstrated experimentally employing silicon diffractive zone plate (SDZP) in a continuous wave mode. Images simultaneously recorded in two different planes are exhibited at 0.6 THz frequency with the spatial resolution of wavelength. Multi-focus imaging operation of the Fibonacci lens is compared with a performance of the conventional silicon phase zone plate. Spatial profiles and focal depth features are discussed varying the frequency from 0.3 THz to 0.6 THz. Good agreement between experimental results and simulation data is revealed.
We propose to generate optical vortices using a degenerate optical resonator with an intra-cavity spiral phase plate (SPP). The rays retracing skewed V-shaped paths in the resonator are phase-locked to form vortex laser with wavefront dislocation mirroring the topological charge of the SPP. Experimental demonstrations on diode-pumped solid state system using Nd:YAG crystal emitted randomly polarized optical vortices at a wavelength of 1064nm when the pump power went above 1.52W and the slope efficiency was 0.19. For long-term operations a power fluctuation of 2.2\% and pointing stability of 2.…
We present a ray transfer matrix for a spiral phase plate. Using this matrix, we determine the stability of an optical resonator made of two spiral phase plates, and trace stable ray orbits in the resonator. Our results should be relevant to laser physics, optical micromanipulation, quantum information and optomechanics.
An all-dielectric Huygens metasurface supporting electric and magnetic resonances is a promising platform for a variety of optical applications that require a combination of extremely high transmission and broad-range control of the phase of the transmitted light. A highly efficient wave plate is one example of such an application. In combination with high spectral selectivity and strong optical energy concentration, such phase plates are desirable for precision sensing and high efficiency nonlinear optics. We propose a novel approach to realizing such ultra-thin optical plates: an anisotropic…
We propose a broadband optical diode, which is composed of one achromatic reciprocal quarter-wave plate and one non-reciprocal quarter-wave plate, both placed between two crossed polarizers. The presented design of achromatic wave plates relies on an adiabatic evolution of the Stokes vector, thus, the scheme is robust and efficient. The possible simple implementation using fiber optics is suggested.
Conventional light focusing, i. e. concentration of an extended optical field within a small area around a point, is a frequently used process in Optics. An important extension to conventional focusing is the generation of the annular focal field of an optical beam. We discuss a simple optical setup that achieves this kind of focusing employing a phase plate as unique optical component. We first establish the class of beams that being transmitted through the phase plate can be focused into an annular field with topological charge of arbitrary integer order q. Then, for each beam in this class …
The use of phase plates in the back focal plane of a microscope is a well established technique in optical microscopy to increase the contrast of weakly interacting samples and is gaining interest in electron microscopy as well. In this paper we study the spiral phase plate (SPP), also called helical, vortex, or two-dimensional Hilbert phase plate, that adds an angularly dependent phase of the form $e^{i\ellϕ}$ to the exit wave in Fourier space. In the limit of large collection angles, we analytically calculate that the average of a pair of $\ell=\pm1$ SPP images is directly proportional to th…
On applying a theorem previously derived by Wolf and Collett, we demonstrate that partially coherent Gaussian Schell model uctuating sources (GSMS) produce exactly the same optical forces as a fully coherent laser beam. We also show that this kind of sources helps to control the light-matter interaction in biological samples which are very sensitive to thermal heating induced by higher power intensities; and hence the invasiveness of the manipulation. This is a consequence of the fact that the same photonic force can be obtained with a low intensity GSMS as with a high intensity laser beam.
In any polarimetric measurement technique, enhancing the laser polarization change of a laser beam before it reaches the analyzer can help in improving the sensitivity. This can be performed using an optical component having a large linear dichroism, the enhancement factor being equal to the square root of the ratio of the two transmission factors. A pile of parallel plates at Brewster incidence looks appropriate for realizing such a polarization magnifier. In this paper, we address the problem raised by the interference in the plates and between the plates, which affects the measurement by gi…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel type of polarization rotator which is capable of rotating the polarization plane of a linearly polarized light at any desired angle in either broad or narrow spectral bandwidth. The rotator comprises an array of standard half-wave plates rotated at specific angles with respect to their fast-polarization axes. The performance of the rotator depends on the number of individual half-wave plates and in this paper we experimentally investigate the performance of two composite rotators comprising six and ten half-wave plates.
We report on the experimental realization of flat mirrors enabling the broadband generation of optical vortices upon reflection. The effect is based on the geometric Berry phase associated with the circular Bragg reflection phenomenon from chiral uniaxial media. We show the reflective optical vortex generation from both diffractive and nondiffractive paraxial light beams using spatially patterned chiral liquid crystal films. The intrinsic spectrally broadband character of spin-orbit generation of optical phase singularities is demonstrated over the full visible domain. Our results do not rely …
Linear birefringence, as implemented in wave plates, is a natural way to control the state of polarization of light. We report on a general method for designing miniature planar wave plates using surface plasmons. The resonant optical device considered here is a single circular aperture surrounded by an elliptical antenna grating. The difference in short and long axis of each ellipses introduces a phase shift on the surface plasmons which enables the realization of a quarter wave plate. Furthermore, the experimental results and the theoretical analysis show that the general procedure used does…
A novel focusing structure with fractal properties is presented. It is a photon sieve in which the pinholes are appropriately distributed over the zones of a fractal zone plate. The focusing properties of the fractal photon sieve are analyzed. The good performance of our proposal is demonstrated experimentally with a series of images obtained under white light illumination. It is shown that compared with a conventional photon sieve, the fractal photon sieve exhibits an extended depth of field and a reduced chromatic aberration.
Fast fabrication of micro-optical elements for generation of optical vortex beams based on the q-plate design is demonstrated by femtosecond (fs) laser ablation of gold film on glass. Q-plates with diameter of ~0.5 mm were made in ~1 min using galvanometric scanners with writing speed of 5 mm/s. Period of gratings of 0.8 micrometers and groove width of 250 nm were achieved using fs-laser ablation at 343 nm wavelength. Phase and intensity analysis of optical vortex generators was carried out at 633 nm wavelength and confirmed the designed performance. Efficiency of spin-orbital conversion of th…

We introduce a novel phase-only diffractive optical element called chiral binary square axicon (CBSA). The CBSA is designed by linearly rotating the square half-period zones of the binary square axicon with respect to one another. A quadratic phase mask (QPM) is combined with the CBSA using modulo-2π phase addition technique to bring the far-field intensity pattern of CBSA at the focal plane of the QPM and to introduce quasi-achromatic effects. The periodically rotated zones of CBSA produces a whirlpool phase profile and twisted intensity patterns at the focal plane of QPM. The degree of twist…
The analytical solution for the propagation of the laser beam with optical vortex through the system of lenses is presented. The optical vortex is introduced into the laser beam (described as Gaussian beam) by spiral phase plate. The solution is general as it holds for the optical vortex of any integer topological charge, the off-axis position of the spiral phase plate and any number of lenses. Some intriguing conclusions are discussed. The higher order vortices are unstable and split under small phase or amplitude disturbance. Nevertheless, we have shown that off-axis higher order vortices ar…
Optical properties of a metasurface which can be considered a monolayer of two classical uniaxial metamaterials, parallel-plate and nanorod arrays, are investigated. It is shown that such metasurface acts as an ultimately thin sub-50 nm wave plate. This is achieved via an interplay of epsilon-near-zero and epsilon-near-pole behavior along different axes in the plane of the metasurface allowing for extremely rapid phase difference accumulation in very thin metasurface layers. These effects are shown to not be disrupted by non-locality and can be applied to the design of ultrathin wave plates, P…
