We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel type of polarization rotator which is capable of rotating the polarization plane of a linearly polarized light at any desired angle in either broad or narrow spectral bandwidth. The rotator comprises an array of standard half-wave plates rotated at specific angles with respect to their fast-polarization axes. The performance of the rotator depends on the number of individual half-wave plates and in this paper we experimentally investigate the performance of two composite rotators comprising six and ten half-wave plates.
A simple scheme for a broadband polarization rotator with tunable rotation angle is proposed and verified experimentally. The rotator consists of only three wave-plates, one of which is a full-wave plate. The robust approach inspired by the composite pulses analogy allows to compensate the wave-plate dispersion in large extent.
A liquid crystal optical device made of an optically anisotropic heterostructure is considered. The device consists of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) layer sandwiched by two phase-shifting anisotropic layers of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC). In this structure each of the NLC layers is a quarterwave plate. The problem is solved both by Ambartsumian method of layer addition and Muller matrix method. The peculiarities of reflection spectra, eigen polarizations, rotation of polarization plane and polarization ellipticity are studied. It is shown that this device can work as a light modulator …
We theoretically suggest and experimentally demonstrate a broadband composite optical rotator that is capable of rotating the polarization plane of a linearly-polarized light at any chosen angle. The device is composed of an even number of half-wave plates rotated at specific angles with respect to their fast-polarization axes. The frequency bandwidth of the polarization rotator in principal increases with the number of half-wave plates. Here we experimentally examine the performance of rotators composed of two, four, six, eight and ten half-wave plates.
We report a nearly perfect bandwidth-unlimited, dispersion-free tunable optical delay system using a prism pair. The observed delay-bandwidth product using a 25-femtosecond light pulse is ~7x104, where the delay time is independent of the signal bandwidth. The present technique breaks from the conventional methods constrained by delay-bandwidth product, nontunability, and delay time dependent optical loss.
We experimentally demonstrate a broadband and an ultra-broadband spectral bandwidth polarization rotators. Both polarization rotators have modular design, that is, they are comprised of an array of half-wave plates rotated to a given angle. We show that the broadband and ultra-broadband performance of the polarization rotators is due to the adiabatic nature of the light polarization evolution. In this paper we experimentally investigate the performance of broadband and ultra-broadband polarization rotators comprising of ten multi-order half-wave plates or ten commercial achromatic half-wave pl…
We report on the spectral properties of a diode laser with a tunable external cavity in integrated optics. Even though the external cavity is short compared to other small-bandwidth external cavity lasers, the spectral bandwidth of this tunable laser is as small as 25 kHz (FWHM), at a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 50 dB. Our laser is also able to access preset wavelengths in as little as 200 us and able to tune over the full telecom C-band (1530 nm - 1565 nm).
We propose a monolithic optical bandpass filter with a transmission bandwidth tunable by the incident angle in a tri-mode high-contrast grating (HCG). We attribute this extraordinary phenomenon to the destructive interference between the TM$_{0}$ and TM$_{2}$ modes and the Fabry-Pérot resonance of the TM1 mode, which can only be excited at the oblique incidence. The transmission bandwidth can be tuned from zero at normal incidence and increases quadratically with incident angle, while the center wavelength reds shifts slightly. The corresponding Q factor can be continuously tuned from 10$^{6}$…
Integrated optical filter based on microring resonators plays a critical role in many applications, ranging from wavelength division multiplexing and switching to channel routing. Bandwidth tunable filters are capable of meeting the on-demand flexible operations in complex situations, due to their advantages of scalability, multi-function, and energy-saving. It has been investigated recently that parity-time (PT) symmetry coupled-resonant systems can be applied to the bandwidth-tunable filters. However, due to the trade-off between the bandwidth-tunable contrast ratio and insertion loss of sys…
We demonstrate an eight-channel reconfigurable optical filter on a silicon chip consisting of cascaded microring resonators and integrated compact heaters. With an embedded Mach-Zehnder (MZ) arm coupling to a microring resonator, the important parameters of a filter such as center frequency, extinction ratio and bandwidth can be controlled simultaneously for purposes of filtering, routing and spectral shaping, thus making our method potentially useful in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and radio frequency arbitrary waveform generation (RFAWG). Multichannel filter response was suc…
Ultra-broadband long-period fiber grating with 10-dB bandwidth of 155 nm and 3-dB bandwidth of 415 nm is demonstrated around 1060 nm, which has been combined with a tunable ytterbium-doped fiber laser to generate optical doughnut beams in the spectral range from 1030 nm to 1099 nm, and the vector nature of generated optical fields are observed. The long-period fiber grating has also been used to transform the amplified spontaneous emission of an ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier into a broadband optical doughnut beam.
Optical non-linearities at the single photon level are key features to build efficient photon-photon gates and to implement quantum networks. Such optical non-linearities can be obtained using an ideal two-level system such as a single atom coupled to an optical cavity. While efficient, such atom-photon interface however presents a fixed bandwidth, determined by the spontaneous emission time and thus the spectral width of the cavity-enhanced two-level transition, preventing an efficient transmission to bandwidth-mismatched atomic systems in a single quantum network. In the present work, we pro…
We study the mechanical stability of a tunable high-finesse microcavity under ambient conditions and investigate light-induced effects that can both suppress and excite mechanical fluctuations. As an enabling step, we demonstrate the ultra-precise electronic stabilization of a microcavity. We then show that photothermal mirror expansion can provide high-bandwidth feedback and improve cavity stability by almost two orders of magnitude. At high intracavity power, we observe self-oscillations of mechanical resonances of the cavity. We explain the observations by a dynamic photothermal instability…
An optical resonator is often called fully tunable if its tunable range exceeds the spectral interval that contains the resonances at all the characteristic modes of this resonator. For the high Q-factor spheroidal and toroidal microresonators, this interval coincides with the azimuthal free spectral range. In this Letter, we demonstrate the first mechanically fully tunable spheroidal microresonator created of a silica microbubble having a 100 micron order radius and a micron order wall thickness. The tunable bandwidth of this resonator is more than two times greater than its azimuthal free sp…

Narrowband single photons that couple well to atomic ensembles could prove essential for future quantum networks, but the efficient generation of such photons remains an outstanding challenge. We realize a spatially-multiplexed heralded source of single photons that are inherently compatible with the commonly employed D2 line of rubidium. Our source is based on four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor, requiring no laser cooling or optical cavities, and generates single photons with high rate and low noise. We use Hong-Ou-Mandel interference to verify the indistinguishability of the photons gene…
Recently, a tunable bandwidth white light cavity (WLC) was demonstrated by using an anomalously dispersive intra-cavity medium to adjust a cavity linewidth without reducing the cavity buildup factor [G.S. Pati et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 133601 (2007)]. In this paper, we show theoretically how such a WLC can be used to realize a distortion-free delay system for a data pulse. The system consists of two WLCs placed in series. Once the pulse has passed through them, the fast-light media in both WLCs are deactivated, so that each of these now acts as a very high reflectivity mirror. The data puls…
We demonstrate a polarization rotator integrated at the output of a GaAs waveguide producing type I second harmonic generation (SHG). Form-birefringent phase matching between the pump fundamental transverse electric (TE) mode near 2.0 $μ$m wavelength and the signal fundamental transverse magnetic (TM) mode efficiently generates light at 1.0 $μ$m wavelength. A SiN waveguide layer is integrated with the SHG device to form a multi-functional photonic integrated circuit. The polarization rotator couples light between the two layers and rotates the polarization from TM to TE or from TE to TM. With …
The modern information networks are built on hybrid systems working at disparate optical wavelengths. Coherent interconnects for converting photons between different wavelengths are highly desired. Although coherent interconnects have conventionally been realized with nonlinear optical effects, those systems require demanding experimental conditions such as phase matching and/or cavity enhancement, which not only bring difficulties in experimental implementation but also set a narrow operating bandwidth (typically in MHz to GHz range as determined by the cavity linewidth). Here, we propose and…
Light polarization rotators and non-reciprocal optical isolators are essential building blocks in photonics technology. These macroscopic passive devices are commonly based on magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr polarization rotation. Magnetoplasmonics - the combination of magnetism and plasmonics - is a promising route to bring these devices to the nanoscale. We introduce design rules for highly tunable active magnetoplasmonic elements in which we can tailor the amplitude and sign of the Kerr response over a broad spectral range.
We report a novel approach to the design and implementation of a tunable cavity on an optical nanofiber (ONF). The key point is to create a composite photonic crystal cavity (CPCC), by combining an ONF and a chirped period defect mode grating. Using numerical simulations we design the CPCC with low scattering loss while tuning the cavity resonance wavelength of \pm10 nm around the designed wavelength. We experimentally demonstrate the tunability of the CPCC, showing good agreement with the simulation results. Our results lay the foundation for a versatile platform for ONF cavity-quantum-electr…
A tunable and switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a new type tunable comb filter is proposed and demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controllers, dual-function operation of the channel spacing tunability and the wavelength switching (interleaving) can be readily achieved. Up to 29 stable lasing lines with 0.4 nm spacing and 14 lasing wavelengths with 0.8 nm spacing in 3 dB bandwidth were obtained at room temperature. In addition, the lasing output, including the number of the lasing lines, the lasing evenness and the lasing locations, can also be flexibly…
We experimentally demonstrate tunable, highly-stable frequency combs with high repetition-rates using a single, charge injection based silicon PN modulator. In this work, we demonstrate combs in the C-band with over 8 lines in a 20-dB bandwidth. We demonstrate continuous tuning of the center frequency in the C-band and tuning of the repetition-rate from 7.5GHz to 12.5GHz. We also demonstrate through simulations the potential for bandwidth scaling using an optimized silicon PIN modulator. We find that, the time varying free carrier absorption due to carrier injection, an undesirable effect in d…
Graphene, a unique two-dimensional material of carbon in a honeycomb lattice, has brought remarkable breakthroughs across the domains of electronics, mechanics, and thermal transport, driven by the quasiparticle Dirac fermions obeying a linear dispersion. Here we demonstrate a counter-pumped all-optical difference frequency process to coherently generate and control THz plasmons in atomic layer graphene with an octave tunability and high efficiency. We leverage the inherent surface asymmetry of graphene for a strong second-order nonlinear polarizability chi(2), which together with tight plasmo…
We show that a temporal soliton can induce resonant radiation by three-wave mixing nonlinearities. This constitutes a new class of resonant radiation whose spectral positions are parametrically tunable. The experimental verification is done in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal, where a femtosecond near-IR soliton is excited and resonant radiation waves are observed exactly at the calculated soliton phase-matching wavelengths via the sum- and difference-frequency generation nonlinearities. This extends the supercontinuum bandwidth well into the mid-IR to span 550-5000 nm and the mid-…
An optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier fully based on Yb lasers at 500 kHz is described. Passive optical-synchronization is achieved between a fiber laser-pumped white-light and a 515 nm pump produced with a 200 W picosecond Yb:YAG InnoSlab amplifier. An output power up to 19.7 W with long-term stability of 0.3% is demonstrated for wavelength tunable pulses between 680 nm and 900 nm and spectral stability of 0.2%; 16.5 W can be achieved with a bandwidth supporting 5.4 fs pulses. We demonstrate compression of 30 microjoule pulses to sub-20 fs duration with a prism compressor, suitable fo…
We demonstrate an RF photonic fractional Hilbert transformer based on an integrated Kerr micro-comb source featuring a record low free spectral range of 48.9 GHz, yielding 75 microcomb lines across the C-band. By programming and shaping the comb lines according to calculated tap weights, we demonstrate that the Hilbert transformer can achieve tunable bandwidths ranging from 1.2 to 15.3 GHz, switchable centre frequencies from baseband to 9.5 GHz, and arbitrary fractional orders. We experimentally characterize the RF amplitude and phase response of the tunable bandpass and lowpass Hilbert transf…
Within a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO), the inherent synchronism between the pump and the resonating signal is the magic to partly transfer the coherence property of the pump to the signal. In our demonstration, Vernier effect is observed within a femtosecond SPOPO by simply detuning the FSR of the cavity, generating signal pulses at tunable repetition rate from several GHz to 1 THz with a maximum 22.58 nm full width half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth supporting 160 fs pulses covering the C- and L-bands of the telecom wavelength region. This technique offers a simple me…
The spatial modes of light have grasped great research interests because of its great potentials in optical communications, optical manipulation and trapping, optical metrology and quantum information processing. Here we report on generating of photon pairs in Hermite-Gaussian (HG) mode in a type-I optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operated far below threshold. The bandwidths of the photon pairs are 11.4 MHz and 20.8MHz for two different HG modes respectively, which is capable to be stored in cold Rubidium atomic ensembles. From correlation measurements, non-classical properties of HG modes …
Several applications in modern photonics require compact on-chip optical filters with a tailored spectral response. However, achieving sub-nanometric bandwidths and high extinction ratios is particularly challenging, especially in low-footprint device formats. Phase shifted Bragg gratings implemented by sidewall modulation of photonic nanowire waveguides are a good solution for on-chip narrowband operation with reasonable requirements in fabrication and scalability. In this work we report on their implementation and optimization in thin film lithium niobate, a photonic platform that affords re…
We present an electrically switchable graphene terahertz (THz) modulator with a tunable-by-design optical bandwidth and we exploit it to compensate the cavity dispersion of a quantum cascade laser (QCL). Electrostatic gating is achieved by a metal-grating used as a gate electrode, with an HfO2/AlOx gate dielectric on top. This is patterned on a polyimide layer, which acts as a quarter wave resonance cavity, coupled with an Au reflector underneath. We get 90% modulation depth of the intensity, combined with a 20 kHz electrical bandwidth in the 1.9 _ 2.7 THz range. We then integrate our modulato…
In this paper, we propose a low-noise, bandwidth tunable microwave photonics filter (MPF) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) losses. By suppressing the out-of-band signal with two broadened symmetric SBS losses, pass bandwidth can be tuned from 500 MHz to 10 GHz. Considering the limited interaction in the center frequency range, a flat-top response with 0.3 dB ripple is easily achieved. Unlike a SBS gain based filter, due to the transparency of the pass band in our proposed filter, hardly no noise is detected in a noise measurement against an obvious maximum 5 dB noise pedestal for…
We present a 100 MHz repetition rate Yb-fiber-laser-pumped synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) delivering tunable frequency combs covering almost the entire visible spectral range. By intracavity doubling both the signal and idler combs and using collinear residual pump light, nearly continuous tuning over the range of 420-700 nm is achieved with only small gaps near the OPO degeneracy condition. Output powers range from 10 mW to 200 mW, depending on wavelength, with pulse durations below 150 fs without external compression. Frequency locking of all three collinearly out…
Coupling mechanical degrees of freedom with plasmonic resonances has potential applications in optomechanics, sensing, and active plasmonics. Here we demonstrate a suspended two-wire plasmonic nano-antenna acting like a nano-electrometer. The antenna wires are supported and electrically connected via thin leads without disturbing the antenna resonance. As a voltage is applied, equal charges are induced on both antenna wires. The resulting equilibrium between the repulsive Coulomb force and the restoring elastic bending force enables us to precisely control the gap size. As a result the resonan…
Graphene is an ideal material for integrated nonlinear optics thanks to its strong light-matter interaction and large nonlinear optical susceptibility. Graphene has been used in optical modulators, saturable absorbers, nonlinear frequency converters, and broadband light emitters. For the latter application, a key requirement is the ability to control and engineer the emission wavelength and bandwidth, as well as the electronic temperature of graphene. Here, we demonstrate that the emission wavelength of graphene$'$ s broadband hot carrier photoluminescence can be tuned by integration on photon…
We have demonstrated a frequency-stabilized tunable 318.6 nm ultraviolet (UV) laser system for the single-photon 6S1/2 - nP (n = 70 ~ 100) Rydberg excitation of cesium atoms. The 637.2 nm laser produced by single-pass sum frequency generation from two infrared fiber lasers is offset locked to a high-finesse ultra-low expansion (ULE) optical cavity placed in ultra-high vacuum using the electronic sideband locking technique. The generated 318.6 nm UV laser via cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation can be continuously tuned over 4 GHz by indirectly changing modulation frequency on the electr…
An optical buffer having a large delay-bandwidth-product -- a critical component for future all-optical communications networks -- remains elusive. Central to its realization is a controllable inline optical delay line, previously accomplished via engineered dispersion in optical materials or photonic structures constrained by a low delay-bandwidth product. Here we show that space-time wave packets whose group velocity in free space is continuously tunable provide a versatile platform for constructing inline optical delay lines. By spatio-temporal spectral-phase-modulation, wave packets in the…
Here we present a high repetition rate, narrow band-width, extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon source for time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES). The narrow band width pulses $ΔE=9, 14, 18$ meV for photon energies $hν=10.8, 18.1, 25.3$ eV are generated through High Harmonic Generation (HHG) using ultra-violet (UV) drive pulses with relatively long pulse lengths (461 fs). The HHG setup employs an annuluar drive beam in a tight focusing geometry at a repetition rate of 250 kHz. Photon energy selection is provided by a series of selectable multilayer bandpass mirrors and thin…
We investigate the effect of ellipticity ratio of the polarized radiation field on optoelectronic properties of a two-dimensional (2D) semi-Dirac (SD) system. The optical conductivity is calculated within the energy balance equation approach derived from the semiclassical Boltzmann equation. We find that there exists the anisotropic optical absorption induced via both the intra- and interband electronic transition channels in the perpendicular $xx$ and $yy$ directions. Furthermore, we examine the effects of the ellipticity ratio, the temperature, the carrier density, and the band-gap parameter…
An electro-absorption optical modulator concept based upon a dual-graphene layer is presented. The device consists of a silicon-on-insulator waveguide upon which two graphene layers reside, separated by a thin insulating region. The lower graphene acts as a tunable absorber, while the upper layer functions as a transparent gate electrode. Calculations based upon realistic graphene material properties show that 3-dB bandwidths over 100 GHz (30 GHz) are possible at near- (λ=1.55 μm) and mid- (λ=3.5μm) infrared bands. The effect of background doping and potential fluctuations on the bandwidth, mo…
