Recently, a tunable bandwidth white light cavity (WLC) was demonstrated by using an anomalously dispersive intra-cavity medium to adjust a cavity linewidth without reducing the cavity buildup factor [G.S. Pati et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 133601 (2007)]. In this paper, we show theoretically how such a WLC can be used to realize a distortion-free delay system for a data pulse. The system consists of two WLCs placed in series. Once the pulse has passed through them, the fast-light media in both WLCs are deactivated, so that each of these now acts as a very high reflectivity mirror. The data pulse bounces around between these mirrors, undergoing negligible attenuation per pass. The trapped pulse can be released by activating the fast-light medium in either WLC. Numerical simulations show that such a system can far exceed the delay-bandwidth constraint encountered in a typical data buffer employing slow light. We also show that the pulse remains virtually undistorted during the process.
We have implemented highly stable and tunable frequency references using optical high finesse cavities which incorporate a piezo actuator. As piezo material we used ceramic PZT, crystalline quartz, or PZN-PT single crystals. Lasers locked to these cavities show a relative frequency stability better than 1 x 10^{-14}, which is most likely not limited by the piezo actuators. The piezo cavities can be electrically tuned over more than one free spectral range (> 1.5 GHz) with only a minor decrease in frequency stability. Furthermore, we present a novel cavity design, where the piezo actuator is pr…
Engineered core-shell cylinders are good candidates for applications in invisibility and cloaking. In particular, hyperbolic nanotubes demonstrate tunable ultra-low scattering cross section in the visible spectral range. In this work we investigate the limits of validity of the condition for invisibility, which was shown to rely on reaching an epsilon near zero in one of the components of the effective permittivity tensor of the anisotropic metamaterial cavity. For incident light polarized perpendicularly to the scatterer axis, critical deviations are found in low-birefringent arrangements and …
Previously, we proposed a data buffering system that makes use of a pair of white light cavities. For application to telecommunication systems, it would be convenient to realize such a device using fiber optic resonators. In this paper, we present the design of such a system, where the white light cavity effect is produced by using stimulated Brillouin scattering. The system consists of a pair of fiber optic white light cavities placed in series. As in the original proposal, the delay time can be controlled independently of the bandwidth of the data pulses. Furthermore, we show how the bandwid…
How to utilize topological microcavities to control quantum emission is one of the ongoing research topics in the optical community. In this work, we investigate the emission of quantum emitters in doubly-resonant topological Tamm microcavity, which can simultaneously achieve dual resonances at two arbitrary wavelengths according to the needs of practical application. To achieve the enhancement of quantum emission in such cavities, we have exploited the tunable doubly-resonant modes, in which one of resonant modes corresponds to the pump laser wavelength and the other one is located at the emi…
We have proposed optical tunable CNOT (XOR) and XNOR logic gates using two-dimensional photonic crystal (2DPhC) cavities. Where, air rods with square lattice array have been embedded in Ag-Polymer substrate with refractive index of 1.59. In this work, we have enhanced speed of logic gates by applying two input signals with a phase difference at the same wavelength for 2DPhC cavities. Where, we have adjusted the phases of input and control signals equal with π/3 and zero, respectively. The response time of the structure and quality factor of the cavities are in the range of femtosecond and 2000…
An invisible cavity is an open resonant device that confines a localized field without producing any scattering outside of the device volume. By exploiting the scatter-less property of such device, it is possible to nest two invisible cavities, as the outer cavity would simply not notice the presence of the inner one, regardless of their relative position. As a result, the position of the inner cavity becomes a means to easily control the field localized inside the cavity and its quality factor. In this paper, we discuss the properties of nested invisible cavities as a simple method to achieve…
We present three high finesse tunable monolithic fiber Fabry-Perot cavities (FFPCs) with high passive mechanical stability. The fiber mirrors are fixed inside slotted glass ferrules, which guarantee an inherent alignment of the resonators. An attached piezoelectric element enables fast tuning of the FFPC resonance frequency over the entire free-spectral range for two of the designs. Stable locking of the cavity resonance is achieved for feedback bandwidths as low as $20\,$mHz, demonstrating the high passive stability. At the other limit, locking bandwidths up to $27\,$kHz, close to the first m…
We develop a thermally tunable hybrid photonic platform comprising gallium arsenide (GaAs) photonic crystal cavities, silicon nitride (SiN$_x$) grating couplers and waveguides, and chromium (Cr) microheaters on an integrated photonic chip. The GaAs photonic crystal cavities are evanescently connected to a common bus waveguide, separating the computation and communication layers. The microheaters are designed to continuously and reversibly tune distant photonic crystal cavities to a common resonance. This architecture can be implemented in a coherent optical network for dedicated optical comput…
Tunable optical material properties enable novel applications in both versatile metamaterials and photonic components including optical sources and modulators. Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are able to highly tune their optical properties with applied bias via altering their free carrier concentration and hence plasma dispersion. The TCO material indium tin oxide (ITO) exhibits unity-strong index changes, and epsilon-near-zero behavior. However, with such tuning the corresponding high optical losses, originating from the fundamental Kramers-Kronig relations, result in low cavity finesse…
Thermal effects are already important in currently operating interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Planned upgrades of these detectors involve increasing optical power to combat quantum shot noise. We consider the ramifications of this increased power for one particular class of laser beams--wide, flat-topped, mesa beams. In particular we model a single mesa beam Fabry-Perot cavity having thermoelastically deformed mirrors. We calculate the intensity profile of the fundamental cavity eigenmode in the presence of thermal perturbations, and the associated changes in thermal noise. We als…
A tunable bottle microresonator can trap an optical pulse of the given spectral width, hold it as long as the material losses permit, and release without distortion.
A tunable nanoscale "zipper" laser cavity, formed from two doubly clamped photonic crystal nanobeams, is demonstrated. Pulsed, room temperature, optically pumped lasing action at a wavelength of 1.3 micron is observed for cavities formed in a thin membrane containing InAsP/GaInAsP quantum-wells. Metal electrodes are deposited on the ends of the nanobeams to allow for micro-electro-mechanical actuation. Electrostatic tuning and modulation of the laser wavelength is demonstrated at a rate of 0.25nm/V^2 and a frequency as high as 6.7MHz, respectively.
Micron-scale optical cavities are produced using a combination of template sphere self-assembly and electrochemical growth. Transmission measurements of the tunable microcavities show sharp resonant modes with a Q-factor>300, and 25-fold local enhancement of light intensity. The presence of transverse optical modes confirms the lateral confinement of photons. Calculations show sub-micron mode volumes are feasible. The small mode volume of these microcavities promises to lead to a wide range of applications in microlasers, atom optics, quantum information, biophotonics and single molecule detec…
We study a re-configurable nonreciprocal fiber ring cavity setup to generate tunable optical frequency combs. Coherent combs can be obtained by finely exploiting bi-chromatic Brillouin lasing and cascaded four-wave mixing in the nonlinear fiber cavity. We introduce a numerical model of the cavity system, which is validated by comparisons with experiments. Our work shows the importance of the mode pulling effect, controlled by the pump laser detuning, in setting the dynamics of the comb. This effect along with the impact of multimode lasing had been overlooked in previous fiber experiments. We …
The concept of a digital cavity is presented. The functionality of a tunable radio-frequency/microwave cavity with unrestricted Q-factor is implemented. The theoretical aspects of the cavity and its potential applications in high resolution spectroscopy and synchronization of clocks together with examples in signal processing and data acquisition are discussed.
Designing and realizing switchable cavities at the infrared and THz frequencies is crucial for achieving novel integrated photonic circuits. Semiconductors like SiC support the propagation of surface phonon polaritons with the ability to tune carrier concentrations via doping. In this manuscript, we investigate the tunability of coupled surface-phonon-plasmon polariton waves inside an elliptical cavity build from a metal-semiconductor heterostructure. We theoretically study the impact of the extra n- and p-carrier doping on the resonant modes of the cavity and we show that for certain cavity m…
Over the past years, photonic metasurfaces have demonstrated their remarkable and diverse capabilities for achieving advanced control over light propagation by confining electromagnetic radiation within the deeply subwavelength thickness of these artificial films. Here, we demonstrate that metasurfaces also offer new unparalleled capabilities for decreasing the overall dimensions of integrated optical components and systems. We propose an original approach of embedding a metasurface inside one of the most fundamental optical elements -an optical cavity- to drastically scale-down the thickness …
We developed a predictive model describing harmonic generation and intermodulation distortions in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). This model takes into account the variations of the saturation parameters along the propagation axis inside the SOA, and uses a rigorous expression of the gain oscillations harmonics. We derived the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of a slow light delay line based on coherent population oscillation (CPO) effects, in a frequency range covering radar applications (from 40kHz up to 30GHz), and for a large range of injected currents. The influence of the high…
We demonstrate an all-optical delay line in hot cesium vapor that tunably delays 275 ps input pulses up to 6.8 ns and 740 input ps pulses up to 59 ns (group index of approximately 200) with little pulse distortion. The delay is made tunable with a fast reconfiguration time (hundreds of ns) by optically pumping out of the atomic ground states.
We study a range of radio-frequency ion trap geometries and investigate the effect of integrating dielectric cavity mirrors on their trapping potential. We aim to identify ion trap and cavity configurations that are best suited for achieving small cavity volumes and thus large ion-photon coupling as required for scalable quantum information networks. In particular, we investigate the trapping potential distortions caused by the dielectric material of the cavity mirrors for different mirror orientations with respect to the trapping electrodes, as well as for mirror misalignment. We also analyze…
Within a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO), the inherent synchronism between the pump and the resonating signal is the magic to partly transfer the coherence property of the pump to the signal. In our demonstration, Vernier effect is observed within a femtosecond SPOPO by simply detuning the FSR of the cavity, generating signal pulses at tunable repetition rate from several GHz to 1 THz with a maximum 22.58 nm full width half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth supporting 160 fs pulses covering the C- and L-bands of the telecom wavelength region. This technique offers a simple me…

Optical cavities containing a negative dispersion medium have been proposed as a means of improving the sensitivity of laser interferometric gravitational wave (GW) detectors through the creation of white light signal recycling cavities. Here we classically demonstrate that negative dispersion can be realized using an optomechanical cavity pumped by a blue detuned doublet. We used an 85mm cavity with an intra-cavity silicon nitride membrane. Tunable negative dispersion is demonstrated, with a phase derivative $dφ/df$ from $-0.14$ Deg$\cdot$Hz$^{-1}$ to $-4.2\times10^{-3}$ Deg$\cdot$Hz$^{-1}$.
We theoretically investigate coupling interaction between molecule excitons and whispering gallery modes (WGMs) that approaches the limit of single exciton strong coupling in hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) cavity, composed of a dielectric core wrapped by several stacks of alternative layers of metal and dielectric. We demonstrate that associated with the excitation of the whispering gallery mode, the electric fields with resonance wavelengths that are much larger than the cavity size can be highly localized within a dielectric layer, leading to extremely small mode volumes. By using temporal co…
We integrate about 100 single Cadmium Selenide semiconductor nanowires in self-standing Silicon Nitride photonic crystal cavities in a single processing run. Room temperature measurements reveal a single narrow emission linewidth, corresponding to a Q-factor as large as 5000. By varying the structural parameters of the photonic crystal, the peak wavelength is tuned, thereby covering the entire emission spectral range of the active material. A very large spectral range could be covered by heterogeneous integration of different active materials.
A solid state emitter coupled to a photonic crystal cavity exhibits increased photon emission into a single frequency mode. However, current designs for photonic crystal cavities coupled to quantum emitters have three main problems: emitters are placed near surfaces that can degrade their optical properties, the cavity fluorescence cannot be collected into a single useful mode for further routing, and post-fabrication tuning is not currently possible in a stable and reversible manner for each node individually. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid cavity design with minimal fabrication of the …
We study the resonant transmission of light in a coupled-resonator optical waveguide interacting with two nearly identical side cavities. We reveal and describe a novel effect of the coupled-resonator-induced reflection (CRIR) characterized by a very high and easily tunable quality factor of the reflection line, for the case of the inter-site coupling between the cavities and the waveguide. This effect differs sharply from the coupled-resonator-induced transparency (CRIT) -- an all-optical analogue of the electromagnetically-induced transparency -- which has recently been studied theoretically…
Open-access microcavities are a powerful tool to enhance light-matter interactions for solid-state quantum and nano systems and are key to advance applications in quantum technologies. For this purpose, the cavities should simultaneously meet two conflicting requirements - full tunability to cope with spatial and spectral inhomogeneities of a material, and highest stability under operation in a cryogenic environment to maintain resonance conditions. To tackle this challenge, we have developed a fully-tunable, open-access, fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavity platform which can be operated also …
A phase modulated RF current source is applied to an injection locked diode laser operating at $780\unit{nm}$. This produces tunable phase modulated sidebands of the laser suitable for stabilizing the length of an optical transfer cavity using the Pound-Drever-Hall technique. The Pound-Drever-Hall signal is anti-symmetric about the lock point, despite the presence of significant diode laser amplitude modulation. The stabilized optical transfer cavity is used to frequency stabilize a 776 nm external cavity diode laser. The stability and tunability of this transfer cavity locked laser is establi…
Graphene is an ideal material for integrated nonlinear optics thanks to its strong light-matter interaction and large nonlinear optical susceptibility. Graphene has been used in optical modulators, saturable absorbers, nonlinear frequency converters, and broadband light emitters. For the latter application, a key requirement is the ability to control and engineer the emission wavelength and bandwidth, as well as the electronic temperature of graphene. Here, we demonstrate that the emission wavelength of graphene$'$ s broadband hot carrier photoluminescence can be tuned by integration on photon…
Narrowband single photons that couple well to atomic ensembles could prove essential for future quantum networks, but the efficient generation of such photons remains an outstanding challenge. We realize a spatially-multiplexed heralded source of single photons that are inherently compatible with the commonly employed D2 line of rubidium. Our source is based on four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor, requiring no laser cooling or optical cavities, and generates single photons with high rate and low noise. We use Hong-Ou-Mandel interference to verify the indistinguishability of the photons gene…
Axion-like particles are a broad class of dark matter candidates which are expected to behave as a coherent, classical field with a weak coupling to photons. Research into the detectability of these particles with laser interferometers has recently revealed a number of promising experimental designs. Inspired by these ideas, we propose the Axion Detection with Birefringent Cavities (ADBC) experiment, a new axion interferometry concept using a cavity that exhibits birefringence between its two, linearly polarized laser eigenmodes. This experimental concept overcomes several limitations of the d…
The spontaneous emission of atoms can be controlled by placing them between two mirrors that form an optical cavity. Rapid advances in material processing techniques in the last 10 years have made it possible to fabricate microscopic optical cavities that can be finely tuned into resonance with the emitter. This has enabled progress in single-photon sources, nano-lasers and spectroscopy of new nano-emitters such as semiconductor quantum dots and Nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond. Here we introduce a step-by-step method for computing the Purcell factor of the latest generation of open tunable…
This work presents numerical and experimental results of plasmonic Metal-Insulator optical nano-cavities. The systems are composed of Silver as metal, polyvinylpyrrolidone or indium tin oxide or zinc oxide as insulator. The proposed nano-cavities exhibit extraordinary effects as colors changing in function of the incident/view angles, enhancement of the experimental real and imaginary parts of the pseudo dielectric constant, an extraordinary transmission of 50$\%$ and zero reflection for both polarizations at the resonant wavelengths. These results lead to the formation and propagation of surf…
We report the control of spontaneous emission from CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots coupled to novel open-access optical microcavities. The cavities are fabricated by focused ion beam milling, and provide mode volumes less than a cubic micrometre. The quantum dot emission spectrum, spatial modes, and lifetime are all modified substantially by the presence of the cavity, and can be tuned by actively varying the cavity length. An increase in emission rate of 75% is achieved at room temperature, attributed to the Purcell effect in the 'bad emitter' regime. We demonstrate a high degree of control …
Efficient coupling between on-chip sources and cavities plays a key role in silicon photonics. However, despite the importance of this basic functionality, there are few systematic design tools to simultaneously control coupling between multiple modes in a compact resonator and a single waveguide. Here, we propose a large-scale adjoint optimization approach to produce wavelength-scale waveguide--cavity couplers operating over tunable and broad frequency bands. We numerically demonstrate couplers discovered by this method that can achieve critical, or nearly critical, coupling between multi-rin…

A theoretical variation between the two distinct light-matter coupling regimes, namely weak and strong coupling, becomes uniquely feasible in open optical Fabry-Pérot microcavities with low mode volume, as discussed here. In combination with monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as WS2, which exhibits a large exciton oscillator strength and binding energy, the room-temperature observation of hybrid bosonic quasiparticles, referred to as exciton-polaritons and characterized by a Rabi splitting, comes into reach. In this context, our simulations using the transfer-matrix me…
We report on the development of on-chip microcavities and show their potential as a platform for cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. Microcavity arrays were formed by the controlled buckling of SiO2/Ta2O5 Bragg mirrors, and exhibit a reflectance-limited finesse of 3500 and mode volumes as small as 35lambda^3. We show that the cavity resonance can be thermally tuned into alignment with the D2 transition of 87Rb, and outline two methods for providing atom access to the cavity. Owing to their small mode volume and high finesse, these cavities exhibit single-atom cooperativities as high as…
Microcavities have long been recognized as indispensable elements in quantum photonic research due to their usefulness for enhanced light extraction and light-matter interaction. A conventional high-Q cavity structure typically allows only a single optical transition to be tuned into resonance with a specific mode. The transition to a more advanced double-cavity structure, however, introduces new and interesting possibilities such as enhancing two spectrally close optical transitions at the same time with two distinct cavity modes. Here, we investigate a cavity structure composed of a monolith…
Light in a nonlinear cavity is expected to flow without friction -- like a superfluid -- under certain conditions. Until now, part-light part-matter (i.e., polariton) superfluids have been observed either at liquid helium temperatures in steady state, or at room temperature for sub-picosecond timescales. Here we report signatures of superfluid cavity photons (not polaritons) for the first time. When launching a photon fluid against a defect, we observe a suppression of backscattering above a critical intensity and below a critical velocity. Room-temperature and steady-state photon superfluidit…
Precise manipulation of light-matter interaction has enabled a wide variety of approaches to create bright and vivid structural colours. Techniques utilizing photonic crystals, Fabry-Pérot cavities, plasmonics, or high-refractive index dielectric metasurfaces have been studied for applications ranging from optical coatings to reflective displays. However, complicated fabrication procedures for sub-wavelength nanostructures, limited active areas, and inherent absence of tunability with these approaches significantly impede their further developments towards flexible, large-scale, and switchable…
