Light in a nonlinear cavity is expected to flow without friction -- like a superfluid -- under certain conditions. Until now, part-light part-matter (i.e., polariton) superfluids have been observed either at liquid helium temperatures in steady state, or at room temperature for sub-picosecond timescales. Here we report signatures of superfluid cavity photons (not polaritons) for the first time. When launching a photon fluid against a defect, we observe a suppression of backscattering above a critical intensity and below a critical velocity. Room-temperature and steady-state photon superfluidity emerges thanks to the strong thermo-optical nonlinearity of our oil-filled cavity. Numerical simulations qualitatively reproduce our experimental observations, and reveal how a viscous photon fluid reorganizes into a superfluid within the thermal relaxation time of the oil. Our results establish thermo-optical nonlinear cavities as platforms for probing photon superfluidity at room temperature, and offer perspectives for exploring superfluidity in arbitrary potential landscapes using structured mirrors.
Narrowband single photons that couple well to atomic ensembles could prove essential for future quantum networks, but the efficient generation of such photons remains an outstanding challenge. We realize a spatially-multiplexed heralded source of single photons that are inherently compatible with the commonly employed D2 line of rubidium. Our source is based on four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor, requiring no laser cooling or optical cavities, and generates single photons with high rate and low noise. We use Hong-Ou-Mandel interference to verify the indistinguishability of the photons gene…
The field of spinoptronics is underpinned by good control over photonic spin-orbit coupling in devices that possess strong optical nonlinearities. Such devices might hold the key to a new era of optoelectronics where momentum and polarization degrees-of-freedom of light are interwoven and interfaced with electronics. However, manipulating photons through electrical means is a daunting task given their charge neutrality and requires complex electro-optic modulation of their medium. In this work, we present electrically tunable microcavity exciton-polariton resonances in a Rashba-Dresselhaus spi…
Engineering non-linear hybrid light-matter states in tailored optical lattices is a central research strategy for the simulation of complex Hamiltonians. Excitons in atomically thin crystals are an ideal active medium for such purposes, since they couple strongly with light and bear the potential to harness giant non-linearities and interactions while presenting a simple sample-processing and room temperature operability. We demonstrate lattice polaritons, based on an open, high-quality optical cavity, with an imprinted photonic lattice strongly coupled to excitons in a WS$_{2}$ monolayer. We …
A system of N two-level atoms cooperatively interacting with a photonic field can be described as a single giant atom coupled to the field with interaction strength ~N^0.5. This enhancement, known as Dicke cooperativity in quantum optics, has recently become an indispensable element in quantum information technology based on strong light-matter coupling. Here, we extend the coupling beyond the standard light-matter interaction paradigm, emulating Dicke cooperativity in a terahertz metasurface with N meta-atoms. Cooperative enhancement manifested in the form of matter-matter coupling, through t…
Single photon sources (SPS), especially those based on solid state quantum emitters, are key elements in future quantum technologies. What is required is the development of broadband, high quantum efficiency, room temperature SPS which can also be tunably coupled to optical cavities which could lead to development of all-optical quantum communication platforms. In this regard deterministic coupling of SPS to plasmonic nanocavity arrays has great advantage due to long propagation length and delocalized nature of surface lattice resonances (SLRs). Guided by these considerations, we report experi…
Characterizing and manipulating the circular polarization of light is central to numerous emerging technologies, including spintronics and quantum computing. Separately, monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a versatile material that has demonstrated promise in a variety of applications, including single photon emitters and valleytronics. Here, we demonstrate a method to tune the photoluminescence (PL) intensity (factor of x161), peak position (38.4meV range), circular polarization (39.4% range), and valley polarization of a Bi2Se3-WS2 2D heterostructure using a low-power laser (0.762uW) in am…
Room-temperature polariton repulsion and ultra-strong coupling for a non-trivial topological one-dimensional tunable Fibonacci-conjugated porous-Silicon photonic quasi-crystal showing quasi bound-states-in-the-continuum
Dynamic radiative cooling with variable emissive power is experimentally demonstrated in this study by a wavelength-selective tunable metafilm emitter, which consists of an opaque aluminum film, a sputtered silicon spacer, and a thermochromic vanadium dioxide (VO2) layer fabricated by a furnace oxidation method. The temperature-dependent spectral emittance, experimentally obtained from spectral reflectance measurements, clearly shows a pronounced emission peak around 10 um wavelength when the VO2 experiences an insulator-to-metal phase transition near 65C. The tunable metafilm emitter achieves…
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit strong optical transitions with significant potential for optoelectronic devices. In particular they are suited for cavity quantum electrodynamics in which strong coupling leads to polariton formation as a root to realisation of inversionless lasing, polariton condensationand superfluidity. Demonstrations of such strongly correlated phenomena to date have often relied on cryogenic temperatures, high excitation densities and were frequently impaired by strong material disorder. At room-temperature, experiments approaching the strong coupl…
A tunable nanoscale "zipper" laser cavity, formed from two doubly clamped photonic crystal nanobeams, is demonstrated. Pulsed, room temperature, optically pumped lasing action at a wavelength of 1.3 micron is observed for cavities formed in a thin membrane containing InAsP/GaInAsP quantum-wells. Metal electrodes are deposited on the ends of the nanobeams to allow for micro-electro-mechanical actuation. Electrostatic tuning and modulation of the laser wavelength is demonstrated at a rate of 0.25nm/V^2 and a frequency as high as 6.7MHz, respectively.
The 1-10 terahertz (THz) spectral window is emerging as a key region for plenty of applications, requiring not yet available continuous-wave room-temperature THz spectrometers with high spectral purity and ultra-broad tunability. In this regard, the spectral features of stabilized telecom sources can actually be transferred to the THz range by difference frequency generation, considering that the width of the accessible THz spectrum generally scales with the area involved in the nonlinear interaction. For this reason, in this paper we extensively discuss the role of Lithium Niobate (LN) channe…
A tunable high resolution frequency reference is constructed using the narrowed cavity-linewidth by the optical pumping-assisted V-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). At room temperature, the optical pumping effect will increase the transparency for the V-type EIT and therefore the cavity-linewidth can be narrowed apparently. For the seven EITs observed in our previous study, cavity-linewidth narrowing is observed in all of them. More importantly, we find that the cavity-linewidth can keep at 1.2MHz in a wide frequency range of 100MHz by utilizing the central EIT. This propert…
We integrate about 100 single Cadmium Selenide semiconductor nanowires in self-standing Silicon Nitride photonic crystal cavities in a single processing run. Room temperature measurements reveal a single narrow emission linewidth, corresponding to a Q-factor as large as 5000. By varying the structural parameters of the photonic crystal, the peak wavelength is tuned, thereby covering the entire emission spectral range of the active material. A very large spectral range could be covered by heterogeneous integration of different active materials.
Quantum fluids of light are the photonic counterpart of Bose gases. They currently attract increasing interest since they are versatile and highly tunable systems for probing many-body physics quantum phenomena, such as superfluidity. Superfluid flow of light has already been reported in microcavity exciton-polariton condensates but clear observation of this phenomenon in cavityless systems, that is, for propagating photon fluids, remains elusive. In this thesis, we study the hydrodynamical properties of light propagating close to resonance in hot rubidium vapors. Whereas photons in air are no…
We report the control of spontaneous emission from CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots coupled to novel open-access optical microcavities. The cavities are fabricated by focused ion beam milling, and provide mode volumes less than a cubic micrometre. The quantum dot emission spectrum, spatial modes, and lifetime are all modified substantially by the presence of the cavity, and can be tuned by actively varying the cavity length. An increase in emission rate of 75% is achieved at room temperature, attributed to the Purcell effect in the 'bad emitter' regime. We demonstrate a high degree of control …
Quantum photonics technologies like wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for high-rate quantum key distribution require narrowband, spectrally tunable single photon emitters. Physical methods that rely on the application of large mechanical strain to epitaxial quantum dots or electric and magnetic fields to color centers in 2D metal dichalcogenides provide limited spectral tunability. Here we adopt a chemical approach to synthesize a family of colloidal mixed-cation perovskite quantum dots ($\text{Cs}_{1-x}\text{FA}_{x}\text{PbBr}_3$) that show highly photo-stable, compositionally tunable si…
The lack of coherent room-temperature sources in the whole terahertz spectral window (0.3-10 THz) has significantly hampered the growth of scientific and technological applications in this range. Among them, high-precision frequency measurements of molecular transitions play a central role but remain an open challenge. Here, room-temperature generation and detection of continuous-wave, broadly tunable, narrow-linewidth THz radiation are presented, and their application to high-resolution spectroscopy in the broad 1-7.5 THz spectral range is demonstrated. This result has been achieved by implem…
The ability of phase-change materials to reversibly and rapidly switch between two stable phases has driven their use in a number of applications such as data storage and optical modulators. Incorporating such materials into metasurfaces enables new approaches to the control of optical fields. In this article we present the design of novel switchable metasurfaces that enable the control of the nonclassical two-photon quantum interference. These structures require no static power consumption, operate at room temperature, and have high switching speed. For the first adaptive metasurface presente…
Valley degree of freedom in the 2D semiconductor is a promising platform for the next generation optoelectronics. Electrons in different valleys can have opposite Berry curvature, leading to the valley Hall effect (VHE). However, VHE without the plasmonic structure's assistance has only been reported in cryogenic temperature, limiting its practical application. Here, we report the observation of VHE at room temperature in the MoS2/WSe2 heterostructures. We also uncover that both the magnitude and the polarity of the VHE in the 2D heterostructure is gate tunable. We attribute this to the opposi…
Metastable wurtzite crystal phases of semiconductors comprise enormous potential for high-performance electro-optical devices, owed to their extended tunable direct band gap range. However, synthesizing these materials in good quality and beyond nanowire size constraints has remained elusive. In this work, the epitaxy of wurtzite InP microdisks and related geometries on insulator for optical applications is explored. This is achieved by an elaborate combination of selective area growth of fins and a zipper-induced epitaxial lateral overgrowth, which enables co-integration of diversely shaped c…
Cholesteric liquid crystals with helicoidal molecular architecture are known for their ability to selectively reflect light with the wavelength that is determined by the periodicity of molecular orientations. Here we demonstrate that by using a cholesteric with oblique helicoidal(heliconical) structure, as opposed to the classic right-angle helicoid, one can vary the wavelength of selectively reflected light in a broad spectral range, from ultraviolet to visible and infrared (360-1520 nm for the same chemical composition) by simply adjusting the electric field applied parallel to the helicoida…
We describe an apparatus for the implementation of hybrid optomechanical systems at 4 K. The platform is based on a high-finesse, micrometer-scale fiber Fabry-Perot cavity, which can be widely tuned using piezoelectric positioners. A mechanical resonator can be positioned within the cavity in the object-in-the-middle configuration by a second set of positioners. A high level of stability is achieved without sacrificing either performance or tunability, through the combination of a stiff mechanical design, passive vibration isolation, and an active Pound-Drever-Hall feedback lock incorporating …
Solution-processed organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have recently emerged as promising gain media for tunable semiconductor lasers, and have come to rival inorganic III-V group semiconductors as the material candidate for chip-scale lasers. Although electrically pumped lasing at room temperature is the ultimate goal, optically pumped continuous-wave lasing at room temperature,a prerequisite for a laser diode, has not been achieved so far. Here, we report lasing action in a surface emitting distributed feedback methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite laser on silicon substrate, a…
Recently, metalenses which consist of metasurface arrays, have attracted attention due to their more condensed size in comparison with conventional lenses. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable coding metasurface hybridized with vanadium dioxide (VO2) for wavefront manipulation at terahertz (THz) frequencies. At room temperature, the unit-cell can reflect as a "1" bit under linearly y polarized illuminated waves. Besides, when the temperature is increased, VO2 would be in a fully metallic state; therefore, unit-cell can act as a "0" reflection phase. Furthermore, by changing the unit-cell…
