The benchmark test case for non-orthogonal grid mesh, the "driven skewed cavity flow", first introduced by Demirdzic et al. (1992, IJNMF, 15, 329) for skew angles of alpha=30 and alpha=45, is reintroduced with a more variety of skew angles. The benchmark problem has non-orthogonal, skewed grid mesh with skew angle (alpha). The governing 2-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates are solved for the solution of driven skewed cavity flow with non-orthogonal grid mesh using a numerical method which is efficient and stable even at extreme skew angles. Highly accurate numerical solutions of the driven skewed cavity flow, solved using a fine grid (512x512) mesh, are presented for Reynolds number of 100 and 1000 for skew angles ranging between 15<alpha<165.
We construct a maximal function associated with a family of skewed cylinders. These cylinders, which are defined as tubular neighborhoods of trajectories of a mollified flow, appear in the study of fluid equations such as the Navier-Stokes equations and the Euler equations. We define a maximal function subordinate to these cylinders, and show it is of weak type $(1, 1)$ and strong type $(p, p)$ by a covering lemma. As an application, we give an alternative proof for the higher derivatives estimate of smooth solutions to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations.

Standard fundamental methods: SIMPLE, SIMPLER (SIMPLE Revised) and Vorticity-Stream function approach are compared and results of them are analyzed for standard CFD test case - Drived Cavity flow. Different aspect ratios of cavity and different Reynolds numbers are studied.
Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of an incompressible open square cavity flow are conducted. Features of the permanent (non-linear) regime together with the linear stability analysis of a two-dimensional steady base flow are discussed. Spanwise boundary conditions are periodic and control parameters set such that the shear layer is stable against Kelvin-Helmholtz modes. Three branches of destabilising modes are found. The most destabilising branch is associated with steady modes, over a finite range of spanwise wavenumbers. The two other branches provide unsteady modes. Features …
Numerical solutions of 2-D steady incompressible flow inside a triangular cavity are presented. For the purpose of comparing our results with several different triangular cavity studies with different triangle geometries, a general triangle mapped onto a computational domain is considered. The Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates in streamfunction and vorticity formulation are numerically solved. Using a very fine grid mesh, the triangular cavity flow is solved for high Reynolds numbers. The results are compared with the numerical solutions found in the literature and als…
High resolution simulations of incompressible flows have become routine across a range of engineering applications. Despite their routine use, due to the high dimensional parameter space present for most practical applications, a comprehensive exploration of the available parameter space is often impractical. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of physics-constrained deep learning methods to provide an efficient means of exploring high-dimensional parameter spaces with minimal amounts of data from high resolution computational fluid dynamic simulations. As a specific application, we choos…
Algorithms for studying transitions and instabilities in incompressible flows typically require the solution of linear systems with the full Jacobian matrix. Other popular approaches, like gradient-based design optimization and fully implicit time integration, also require very robust solvers for this type of linear system. We present a parallel fully coupled multilevel incomplete factorization preconditioner for the 3D stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a structured grid. The algorithm and software are based on the robust two-level method developed by Wubs and Thies. In this…
A method for deriving provably stable low-dimensional Galerkin models of post-transient incompressible flows is introduced. The proposed approach involves an iterative procedure for expansion modes that satisfy Lyapunov stability in the neighborhood of a fixed point. The approach is demonstrated using two prototypical flow configurations: a two-dimensional mixing layer, and two-dimensional flow inside a lid-driven cavity. This new methodology can be a building block in an effort to develop more accurate and more robust low-dimensional models of incompressible flows.
A novel reduced order model (ROM) for incompressible flows is developed by performing a Galerkin projection based on a fully (space and time) discrete full order model (FOM) formulation. This 'discretize-then-project' approach requires no pressure stabilization technique (even though the pressure term is present in the ROM) nor a boundary control technique (to impose the boundary conditions at the ROM level). These are two main advantages compared to existing approaches. The fully discrete FOM is obtained by a finite volume discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a coll…
In this study, the hyperbolic method is adopted to explore the flow field states of incompressible flow in a four-sided lid-driven square cavity. In particular, we focus on the flow bifurcation obtained at the critical Reynolds number $R_e \simeq 130$. In the hyperbolic method, the diffusive term is transformed into an hyperbolic one by introducing a diffusion flux term, which is the solution of an additional equation. A classical Riemann-like solver with a finite-volume discretization is thus employed for the full flux (splitted into advective and diffusive parts), in order to solve the stead…
Meshless solution to differential equations using radial basis functions (RBF) is an alternative to grid based methods commonly used. Since the meshless method does not need an underlying connectivity in the form of control volumes or elements, issues such as grid skewness that adversely impact accuracy are eliminated. Gaussian, Multiquadrics and inverse Multiquadrics are some of the most popular RBFs used for the solutions of fluid flow and heat transfer problems. But they have additional shape parameters that have to be fine tuned for accuracy and stability. Moreover, they also face stagnati…
We present a multiscale approach to simulate the impact of a solid object on a liquid surface: upon impact a thin liquid sheet is thrown upwards all around the rim of the impactor while in its wake a large surface cavity forms. Under the influence of hydrostatic pressure the cavity immediately starts to collapse and eventually closes in a single point from which a thin, needle-like jet is ejected. Existing numerical treatments of liquid impact either consider the surrounding air as an incompressible fluid or neglect air effects altogether. In contrast, our approach couples a boundary-integral …
We present a strong form, meshless point collocation explicit solver for the numerical solution of the transient, incompressible, viscous Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations in two dimensions. We numerically solve the governing flow equations in their stream function-vorticity formulation. We use a uniform Cartesian embedded grid to represent the flow domain. We compute the spatial derivatives using the Meshless Point Collocation (MPC) method. We verify the accuracy of the numerical scheme for commonly-used benchmark problems including lid-driven cavity flow, flow over a backward-facing step and vor…
We experimentally study the airflow in a collapsing cavity created by the impact of a circular disk on a water surface. We measure the air velocity in the collapsing neck in two ways: Directly, by means of employing particle image velocimetry of smoke injected into the cavity and indirectly, by determining the time rate of change of the volume of the cavity at pinch-off and deducing the air flow in the neck under the assumption that the air is incompressible. We compare our experiments to boundary integral simulations and show that close to the moment of pinch-off, compressibility of the air s…
In this paper, 14-velocity and 18-velocity multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) models are proposed for three-dimensional incompressible flows. These two models are constructed based on the incompressible LBGK model proposed by He et al. (Chin. Phys., 2004, 13: 40-46) and the MRT LB model proposed by d'Humières et al. (Philos. Trans. R. Soc., A, 2002, 360: 437-451), which have advantages in the computational efficiency and stability, respectively. Through the Chapman-Enskog analysis, the models can recover to three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the low …
New corrections to the equation of motion and total collapsing time of an empty spherical cavity immersed in an infinite incompressible medium are proposed on the assumption of a non-uniform density. The dimensionless number quantifying the corrections with respect to the standard Rayleigh results (coined the $Δ$-factor) is fully independent of other possible contributions like surface tension and viscous terms. The $Δ$-factor effect advocated here can be seen as a direct consequence of a mass-shell non-trivial solution to the continuity equation. The consistency of the corrections with respec…
In this paper, we developed a mathematical model for the sedimentation process of small particles in a lid-driven cavity flow with an obstacle to model the transport of microplastic particles in rivers. A stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes simulation at moderate Reynolds-numbers provides the background flow field. Spherical particles are injected into this flow field and their equation of motion is solved to determine the number of particles that sediment on the surface of the obstacle. To capture the effect of typical biological organisms and biofilms on the bottom surface of river beds,…
In this work, numerical solutions of the two dimensional time dependent incompressible flow, in a driven cavity at high Reynolds number Re, are presented. At high Re, there is a controversy. Some studies predicted that the flow is steady, others found time dependent non-steady flow, either periodic or aperiodic. In this study, the driven lid cavity is successfully solved using a very fine grid mesh, for Re up to $30 000$. We discretize the Vorticity-Stream formulation of the Navier-Stokes equation with the SSPRK(5,4) scheme in a $1024\times1024$ grid. Using this very fine grid, the results obt…
In this article, three dimensional (3D) lid-driven cubic cavity flows have been studied numerically for various values of Reynolds number ($Re$). The numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations modeling incompressible viscous fluid flow in a cubic cavity is obtained via a methodology combining a first order accurate operator-splitting, $L^2$-projection Stokes solver, a wave-like equation treatment of the advection and finite element methods. The numerical results obtained for Re$=$400, 1000, and 3200 show a good agreement with available numerical and experimental results in literature. S…
Many unsteady flows exhibiting complex dynamics are nevertheless characterized by emergent large-scale coherence in space and time. Reduced-order models based on Galerkin projection of the governing equations onto an orthogonal modal basis approximate the flow as a low-dimensional dynamical system with linear and quadratic terms. However, these Galerkin models often fail to reproduce the true dynamics, in part because they ignore important nonlinear interactions with unresolved flow scales. Here, we use a separation of time scales between the resolved and subscale variables to derive a reduced…
This article represents a set of results numerically studied in the framework of laminar double diffusive natural convection. We have investigated the thermophysical comportment of Water-based incompressible nanofluids circulating, due to buoyancy forces, inside a two-dimensional enclosed rectangular cavity for two comparable cases of considering or not a centered isothermal block. Results of this investigation are mainly built on parametric study of the most analytical variables that govern the flow. The buoyancy ratio ranged from -5 to 100, while Rayleigh number ranged from 103 to 106, and L…
In this study the numerical performances of wide and compact fourth order formulation of the steady 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations will be investigated and compared with each other. The benchmark driven cavity flow problem will be solved using both wide and compact fourth order formulations and the numerical performances of both formulations will be presented and also the advantages and disadvantages of both formulations will be discussed.
The simulation of natural convection problem based on the Galerkin finite-element method, with the penalty finite-element formulation of the momentum balance equation, is exploited for accurate solutions of equations describing the problem of H-Form cavity differentially heated side walls. The cavity is occupied by the air whose Prandtl number is Pr=0.71, the fluid is assumed to be steady, viscous and incompressible within thermal convection. A numerical investigation has been made for Rayleigh numbers ranging from 10 to 10^6 for three cases of total internal height aspects of H-Form cavity: 0…
In this paper, we have proposed a modified Marker-And-Cell (MAC) method to investigate the problem of an unsteady 2-D incompressible flow with heat and mass transfer at low, moderate, and high Reynolds numbers with no-slip and slip boundary conditions. We have used this method to solve the governing equations along with the boundary conditions and thereby to compute the flow variables, viz. $u$-velocity, $v$-velocity, $P$, $T$, and $C$. We have used the staggered grid approach of this method to discretize the governing equations of the problem. A modified MAC algorithm was proposed and used to…
A family of compressible exact periodic solutions is reported for the first time in an open cavity flow setup. These are found using a novel framework which permits the computation of such solutions in an arbitrary complex geometry. The periodic orbits arise from a synchronised concatenation of convective and acoustic events which strongly depend on the Mach number. This flow-acoustic interaction furnishes the periodic solutions with a remarkable stability and it is found to completely dominate the system's dynamics and the sound directivity. The periodic orbits, which could be called `exact R…
The structural bifurcation of a 2D divergence free vector field $\mathbf{u}(\cdot, t)$ when $\mathbf{u}(\cdot, t_0)$ has an interior isolated singular point $\mathbf{x}_0$ of zero index has been studied by Ma and Wang. Although in the class of divergence free fields which undergo a local bifurcation around a singular point, the ones with index zero singular points are generic, this class excludes some important families of symmetric flows. In particular, when $\mathbf{u}(\cdot, t_0)$ is anti-symmetric with respect to $\mathbf{x}_0$, or symmetric with respect to the axis located on $\mathbf{x}_…
Turbulent mixing layers over cavities can couple with acoustic waves and lead to undesired oscillations. To understand the nonlinear aspects of this phenomenon, a turbulent mixing layer over a deep cavity at Reynolds number 150 000 is considered and its response to harmonic forcing is analysed with large-eddy simulations (LES) and linearised Navier-Stokes equations (LNSE). As a model of incoming acoustic perturbations, spatially uniform time-harmonic forcing is applied at the cavity end, with amplitudes in the wide range 0.045-8.9% of the bulk velocity. Compressible LES provide reference nonli…
The two-dimensional flow of viscous incompressible liquid in a square cavity with a free boundary and differentially heated vertical sides is considered in the present work. The influence of gravitational and thermocapillary convection on temperature and velocity fields is studied in large range of dimensionless parameters and similarity criteria using equations in a Boussinesq approximation. Limiting cases of dimensionless parameters are analyzed numerically.
We present the extension of an efficient and highly parallelisable framework for incompressible fluid flow simulations to viscoplastic fluids. The system is governed by incompressible conservation of mass, the Cauchy momentum equation and a generalised Newtonian constitutive law. In order to simulate a wide range of viscoplastic fluids, we employ the Herschel-Bulkley model for yield-stress fluids with nonlinear stress-strain dependency above the yield limit. We utilise Papanastasiou regularisation in our algorithm to deal with the singularity in apparent viscosity. The resulting system of part…
Inspired by the recent realization of a 2D chiral fluid as an active monolayer droplet moving atop a 3D Stokesian fluid, we formulate mathematically its free-boundary dynamics. The surface droplet is described as a general 2D linear, incompressible, and isotropic fluid, having a viscous shear stress, an active chiral driving stress, and a Hall stress allowed by the lack of time-reversal symmetry. The droplet interacts with itself through its driven internal mechanics and by driving flows in the underlying 3D Stokes phase. We pose the dynamics as the solution to a singular integral-differential…
Large-eddy simulations of incompressible Newtonian fluid flows with approximate deconvolution models based on the van Cittert method are reported. The Legendre spectral element method is used for the spatial discretization to solve the filtered Navier--Stokes equations. A novel variant of approximate deconvolution models blended with a mixed scale model using a dynamic evaluation of the subgrid-viscosity constant is proposed. This model is validated by comparing the large-eddy simulation with the direct numerical simulation of the flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity, performed at a Reynolds nu…
The off-lattice Boltzmann (OLB) method consists of numerical schemes which are used to solve the discrete Boltzmann equation. Unlike the commonly used lattice Boltzmann method, the spatial and time steps are uncoupled in the OLB method. In the currently proposed schemes, which can be broadly classified into Runge-Kutta-based and characteristics-based, the size of the time-step is limited due to numerical stability constraints. In this work, we systematically compare the numerical stability of the proposed schemes in terms of the maximum stable time-step. In line with the overall LB method, we …
