In this work, numerical solutions of the two dimensional time dependent incompressible flow, in a driven cavity at high Reynolds number Re, are presented. At high Re, there is a controversy. Some studies predicted that the flow is steady, others found time dependent non-steady flow, either periodic or aperiodic. In this study, the driven lid cavity is successfully solved using a very fine grid mesh, for Re up to $30 000$. We discretize the Vorticity-Stream formulation of the Navier-Stokes equation with the SSPRK(5,4) scheme in a $1024\times1024$ grid. Using this very fine grid, the results obtained converge to a stationary solution. Detailed results for Re between $5 000$ and $30 000$ are presented. The driven lid cavity problem is solved with a NVIDIA GPU using the CUDA programming environment with double precision.
Regular perturbation solutions are obtained for the Stokes flow field, the first order effects of inertia on the flow field, and the primary and secondary pressure fields in the circular lid driven cavity. The physical mechanism that causes vortex breakdown exists at small Reynolds number; it is a stagnation of the secondary flow by an adverse pressure gradient. The discontinuity between the rotating lid and the stationary sidewall has negligible influence on the flow field provided that the inertial forcing of the secondary flow is not localized near the boundary discontinuity, and the Reynol…
A transition to unsteadiness of a flow inside a cubic diagonally lid-driven cavity with no-slip boundaries is numerically investigated by a series of direct numerical simulations (DNS) performed on 100^3 and 200^3 stretched grids. It is found that the observed oscillatory instability is setting in via a subcritical symmetry-breaking Hopf bifurcation. The instability evolves on two vortices in a coupled manner. Critical values of Reynolds number Recr=2320 and non-dimensional angular oscillating frequency omegacr=0.249 for transition from steady to oscillatory flow are accurately estimated. Char…
In the present paper, we examine the viscous flow evolution in a square cavity. Coupled with the stream function, the initial-boundary value problem of the vorticity is numerically solved by a method of iteration. The only boundary condition is the wall velocity which in turn defines the Dirichlet value for the stream function. We assert that the corner singularity in the cavity flow is in fact a theoretical artefact. By adopting suitably regulated lid velocity, excellent comparison with experiments is found because of the converged palinstrophy field. Our calculations demonstrate that asymmet…
Primary instability of the lid-driven flow in a cube is studied by a comprehensive linear stability approach. Two cases, in which the lid moves parallel to the cube sidewall or parallel to the diagonal plane, are considered. The SIMPLE procedure is applied for evaluation of the Krylov vectors needed for application of the Newton and Arnoldi iteration methods. The finite volume grid is gradually refined from 1003 to 2563 nodes. The computations result in the grid convergent values of the critical Reynolds number and oscillation frequency. Patterns of the most unstable perturbation are reported.…
In this article, three dimensional (3D) lid-driven cubic cavity flows have been studied numerically for various values of Reynolds number ($Re$). The numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations modeling incompressible viscous fluid flow in a cubic cavity is obtained via a methodology combining a first order accurate operator-splitting, $L^2$-projection Stokes solver, a wave-like equation treatment of the advection and finite element methods. The numerical results obtained for Re$=$400, 1000, and 3200 show a good agreement with available numerical and experimental results in literature. S…
Transition from steady state to intermittent chaos in the cubical lid-driven flow is investigated numerically. Fully three-dimensional stability analyses have revealed that the flow experiences an Andronov-Poincaré-Hopf bifurcation at a critical Reynolds number $Re_c$ = 1914. As for the 2D-periodic lid-driven cavity flows, the unstable mode originates from a centrifugal instability of the primary vortex core. A Reynolds-Orr analysis reveals that the unstable perturbation relies on a combination of the lift-up and anti lift-up mechanisms to extract its energy from the base flow. Once linearly u…
In this paper, we developed a mathematical model for the sedimentation process of small particles in a lid-driven cavity flow with an obstacle to model the transport of microplastic particles in rivers. A stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes simulation at moderate Reynolds-numbers provides the background flow field. Spherical particles are injected into this flow field and their equation of motion is solved to determine the number of particles that sediment on the surface of the obstacle. To capture the effect of typical biological organisms and biofilms on the bottom surface of river beds,…
The vortex dynamics of laminar flow past a rectangular cavity is investigated using simulations and experiments. The flow is three-dimensional and characterized by a large, dominant vortex structure that fills most of the cavity at moderate Reynolds numbers with a weak, yet significant flow in the axial direction along the vortex core. Classical bubble-type vortex breakdown is observed within the cavity above a certain critical Reynolds number, which is a function of the channel width. The critical Reynolds number for the onset of breakdown is determined as a function of channel width, and the…
Direct Numerical Simulation have been carried out for a two dimensional flow in a Lid driven cavity at Reynolds number 5000 and Prandtl number 7 with water as the working fluid. Both the side walls of the enclosure are insulated(i.e. adiabatic boundary condition), while the bottom plate is at higher temperature and the top wall is at colder temperature. Effects of heating of the bottom wall and movement of the top lid have been investigated by conducting numerical simulations at different Richardson numbers by varying from low and moderate magnitudes within the limits of Boussinesq-approximati…
This paper presents the large-eddy simulation of the lid-driven cubic cavity flow by the spectral element method (SEM) using the dynamic model. Two spectral filtering techniques suitable for these simulations have been implemented. Numerical results for Reynolds number $\text{Re}=12'000$ are showing very good agreement with other experimental and DNS results found in the literature.
High resolution simulations of incompressible flows have become routine across a range of engineering applications. Despite their routine use, due to the high dimensional parameter space present for most practical applications, a comprehensive exploration of the available parameter space is often impractical. In this work, we demonstrate the ability of physics-constrained deep learning methods to provide an efficient means of exploring high-dimensional parameter spaces with minimal amounts of data from high resolution computational fluid dynamic simulations. As a specific application, we choos…
We investigate the influence of unsteady partial cavitation on the fluid-structure interaction of a freely vibrating hydrofoil section at high Reynolds numbers. We consider an elastically-mounted NACA66 hydrofoil section that is free to vibrate in the transverse flow direction. Cavitating flow dynamics coupled with the transverse vibration are studied at low angles of attack. For the numerical study, we employ a recently developed unified variational fluid-structure interaction framework based on homogeneous mixture-based cavitation with hybrid URANS-LES turbulence modeling. We first validate …
Particle image velocimetry is applied to the lid-driven flow in a cube to validate the numerical prediction of steady - oscillatory transition at lower than ever observed Reynolds number. Experimental results agree with the numerical simulation demonstrating large amplitude oscillatory motion overlaying the base quasi-two-dimensional flow in the mid-plane. A good agreement in the values of critical Reynolds number and frequency of the appearing oscillations, as well as similar spatial distributions of the oscillations amplitude are obtained.
The lid-driven cavity flow is a well-known benchmark problem for the validation of new numerical methods and techniques. In experimental and numerical studies with viscoelastic fluids in such lid-driven flows, purely-elastic instabilities have been shown to appear even at very low Reynolds numbers. A finite-volume viscoelastic code, using the log-conformation formulation, is used in this work to probe the effect of viscoelasticity on the appearance of such instabilities in two-dimensional lid-driven cavities for a wide range of aspect ratios (0.125 < height/length < 4.0), at different Deborah …
In this paper we investigate a subgrid model based on an anisotropic version of the NS-$α$ model using a lid-driven cavity flow at a Reynolds number of 10,000. Previously the NS-$α$ model has only been used numerically in the isotropic form. The subgrid model is developed from the Eulerian-averaged anisotropic equations [Holm, \textit{Physica D}, v.133, pp 215-269, 1999]. It was found that when $α^{2}$ was based on the mesh numerical oscillations developed which manifested themselves in the appearance of streamwise vortices and a `mixing out' of the velocity profile. This is analogous to the C…
In that report solution to incompressible Navier - Stokes equations in non - dimensional form will be presented. Standard fundamental methods: SIMPLE, SIMPLER (SIMPLE Revised) and Vorticity-Stream function approach are compared and results of them are analyzed for standard CFD test case - Drived Cavity flow. Different aspect ratios of cavity and different Reynolds numbers are studied.
Wall-driven flow in square cavity has been studied extensively, yet it is more frequently for the rectangular cavity flow occurring in practical problems, and some flow characteristics about rectangular cavity have not been fully investigated. As a promising numerical simulation tool, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is employed to simulate the lid-driven flow in a two-dimensional rectangular cavity in this paper. First, the code is validated for the standard square cavity, the velocity profiles, stream function values and center positions of the primary and second vortexes at different Re a…
Large-eddy simulations of the turbulent flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity have been carried out at a Reynolds number of 12000 using spectral element methods. Two distinct subgrid-scales models, namely a dynamic Smagorinsky model and a dynamic mixed model, have been both implemented and used to perform long-lasting simulations required by the relevant time scales of the flow. All filtering levels make use of explicit filters applied in the physical space (on an element-by-element approach) and spectral (modal) spaces. The two subgrid-scales models are validated and compared to available exper…
A new approach to model order reduction of the Navier-Stokes equations at high Reynolds number is proposed. Unlike traditional approaches, this method does not rely on empirical turbulence modeling or modification of the Navier-Stokes equations. It provides spatial basis functions different from the usual proper orthogonal decomposition basis function in that, in addition to optimally representing the training data set, the new basis functions also provide stable and accurate reduced-order models. The proposed approach is illustrated with two test cases: two-dimensional flow inside a square li…
We investigated experimentally stably stratified turbulent flows in a lid driven cavity with a non-zero vertical mean temperature gradient in order to identify the parameters governing the mean and turbulent flows and to understand their effects on the momentum and heat transfer. We found that the mean velocity patterns (e.g., the form and the sizes of the large-scale circulations) depend strongly on the degree of the temperature stratification. In the case of strong stable stratification, the strong turbulence region is located in the vicinity of the main large-scale circulation. We detected …
We propose a Finite Volume Method for the simulation of elastoviscoplastic flows, modelled after the extension to the Herschel-Bulkley model by Saramito [J. Non-Newton. Fluid Mech. 158 (2009) 154-161]. The method is akin to methods for viscoelastic flows. It is applicable to cell-centred grids, both structured and unstructured, and includes a novel pressure stabilisation technique of the "momentum interpolation" type. Stabilisation of the velocity and stresses is achieved through a "both sides diffusion" technique and the CUBISTA convection scheme, respectively. A second-order accurate tempora…
We investigate the performance of the finite volume method in solving viscoplastic flows. The creeping square lid-driven cavity flow of a Bingham plastic is chosen as the test case and the constitutive equation is regularised as proposed by Papanastasiou [J. Rheol. 31 (1987) 385-404]. It is shown that the convergence rate of the standard SIMPLE pressure-correction algorithm, which is used to solve the algebraic equation system that is produced by the finite volume discretisation, severely deteriorates as the Bingham number increases, with a corresponding increase in the non-linearity of the eq…
Numerical simulations for 2-D unsteady, incompressible flow with heat transfer in a four-sided lid-driven rectangular domain are reported in the present study. For the four-sided lid-driven rectangular domain, the lower wall is moved to the left, the upper wall is moved to the right, while the right wall is moved upwards and the left wall is moved downwards. All four walls move with equal speed. Different constant temperatures are applied to the left and right moving walls, and thermal insulation is applied to the upper and bottom moving walls. The governing equations are discretized using the…
Turbulent mixing layers over cavities can couple with acoustic waves and lead to undesired oscillations. To understand the nonlinear aspects of this phenomenon, a turbulent mixing layer over a deep cavity at Reynolds number 150 000 is considered and its response to harmonic forcing is analysed with large-eddy simulations (LES) and linearised Navier-Stokes equations (LNSE). As a model of incoming acoustic perturbations, spatially uniform time-harmonic forcing is applied at the cavity end, with amplitudes in the wide range 0.045-8.9% of the bulk velocity. Compressible LES provide reference nonli…
In this study, the hyperbolic method is adopted to explore the flow field states of incompressible flow in a four-sided lid-driven square cavity. In particular, we focus on the flow bifurcation obtained at the critical Reynolds number $R_e \simeq 130$. In the hyperbolic method, the diffusive term is transformed into an hyperbolic one by introducing a diffusion flux term, which is the solution of an additional equation. A classical Riemann-like solver with a finite-volume discretization is thus employed for the full flux (splitted into advective and diffusive parts), in order to solve the stead…
The intention of the ''von Karman sodium'' (VKS) experiment is to study the hydromagnetic dynamo effect in a highly turbulent and unconstrained flow. Much effort has been devoted to the optimization of the mean flow and the lateral boundary conditions in order to minimize the critical magnetic Reynolds number and hence the necessary motor power. The main focus of this paper lies on the role of ''lid layers'', i.e. layers of liquid sodium between the impellers and the end walls of the cylinder. First, we study an analytical test flow to show that lid layers can have an ambivalent effect on the …
We extend our recent work on the creeping flow of a Bingham fluid in a lid-driven cavity, to the study of inertial effects, using a finite volume method and the Papanastasiou regularisation of the Bingham constitutive model [J. Rheology 31 (1987) 385-404]. The finite volume method used belongs to a very popular class of methods for solving Newtonian flow problems, which use the SIMPLE algorithm to solve the discretised set of equations, and have matured over the years. By regularising the Bingham constitutive equation it is easy to extend such a solver to Bingham flows since all that this requ…
We use spectral analysis of Eulerian and Lagrangian dynamics to study the advective mixing in an incompressible 2D bounded cavity flow. A significant property of such a rotational flow at high Reynolds numbers is that mixing in its core is slower than wall-adjacent areas and corner eddies. We explain this property by considering the resonance between frequencies of unsteady motion -- captured by the Koopman spectral analysis of the velocity field -- and the circulation frequency of Lagrangian tracers in the mean flow. In high-Reynolds rotational 2D flows, the vorticity in the rotational core i…
A novel reduced-order model for nonlinear flows is presented. The model arises from a resolvent decomposition in which the nonlinear advection terms of the Navier-Stokes equation are considered as the input to a linear system in Fourier space. Results show that Taylor-Görtler-like vortices can be represented from a low-order resolvent decomposition of a nonlinear lid-driven cavity flow. The present approach provides an approximation of the fluctuating velocity given the time-mean and the time history of a single velocity probe.
An analytical solution for the flow field of a shear flow over a rectangular cavity containing a second immiscible fluid is derived. While flow of a single-phase fluid over a cavity is a standard case investigated in fluid dynamics, flow over a cavity which is filled with a second immiscible fluid, has received little attention. The flow filed inside the cavity is considered to define a boundary condition for the outer flow which takes the form of a Navier slip condition with locally varying slip length. The slip-length function is determined from the related problem of lid-driven cavity flow.…
The present study numerically explores the mixed convection phenomena in a differentially heated ventilated square cavity with active flow modulation via a rotating plate. Forced convection flow in the cavity is attained by maintaining an external fluid flow through an opening at the bottom of the left cavity wall while leaving it through another opening at the right cavity wall. A counter-clockwise rotating plate at the center of the cavity acts as active flow modulator. Moving mesh approach is used for the rotation of the plate and the numerical solution is achieved using Arbitrary Lagrangia…
The mixing in three-dimensional enclosures is investigated numerically using flow in cubical cavity as a geometrically simple model of various natural and engineering flows. The mixing rate is evaluated for up to the value of Reynolds number Re=2000 for several representative scenarios of moving cavity walls: perpendicular motion of the parallel cavity walls (Case A), motion of a wall in its plane along its diagonal (Case B1), motion of two perpendicular walls outward the common edge (Case B2), and the parallel cavity walls in motion either in parallel directions (Case B3) or in opposite direc…
The proposed flow in a 3-D cubic cavity is driven by its parallel walls moving in perpendicular directions to create a genuinely three-dimensional highly separated vortical flow yet having simple single-block cubical geometry of computational domain. The elevated level of helicity is caused by motion of a wall in the direction of axis of primary vortex created by a parallel wall. The velocity vector field is obtained numerically by using second-order upwind scheme and 200^3 grid. Helicity, magnitude of normalized helicity and kinematic vorticity number are evaluated for Reynolds numbers rangin…
[Abridged]We present high-resolution three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of breaking waves solving the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations. We investigate the role of the Reynolds and Bond numbers on the energy, bubble and droplet statistics of strong plunging breakers, and explore the asymptotic regimes at high Reynolds and Bond numbers to be compared with laboratory breaking waves. Energetically, the breaking wave transitions from laminar to three-dimensional turbulent flow on a timescale that depends on the turbulent Reynolds number up to a limiting value of $Re_λ\sim 100$, consist…
We use resolvent analysis to determine an unsteady active control setup to attenuate pressure fluctuations in turbulent supersonic flow over a rectangular cavity with a length-to-depth ratio of 6 at a Mach number of 1.4 and a Reynolds number based on cavity depth of 10,000. Large-eddy simulations (LES) and dynamic modal decomposition (DMD) of the supersonic cavity flow reveal the dominance of two-dimensional Rossiter modes II and IV. These predominantly two-dimensional vortical structures generate high-amplitude unsteadiness over the cavity through trailing-edge impingement and create oblique …
Numerical solutions of 2-D steady incompressible flow inside a triangular cavity are presented. For the purpose of comparing our results with several different triangular cavity studies with different triangle geometries, a general triangle mapped onto a computational domain is considered. The Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates in streamfunction and vorticity formulation are numerically solved. Using a very fine grid mesh, the triangular cavity flow is solved for high Reynolds numbers. The results are compared with the numerical solutions found in the literature and als…
The present work demonstrates the use of resolvent analysis to obtain physical insights for open-cavity flows. Resolvent analysis identifies the flow response to harmonic forcing, given a steady base state, in terms of the response and forcing modes and the amplification gain. The response and forcing modes reveal the spatial structures associated with this amplification process. In this study, we perform resolvent analysis on both laminar and turbulent flows over a rectangular cavity with length-to-depth ratio of $L/D=6$ at a free stream Mach number of $M_\infty=0.6$ in a spanwise periodic se…
The stability properties of two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) compressible flows over a rectangular cavity with length-to-depth ratio of $L/D=6$ is analyzed at a free stream Mach number of $M_\infty=0.6$ and depth-based Reynolds number of $Re_D=502$. In this study, we closely examine the influence of three-dimensionality on the wake-mode that has been reported to exhibit high-amplitude fluctuations from the formation and ejection of large-scale spanwise vortices. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) and bi-global stability analysis are utilized to study the instability characteristics of the w…
